For many normal and casual registered taxpayers, the workflow includes GSTR-1 for outward supplies and GSTR-3B for the summary return and payment. Your taxpayer category determines which forms you must file, so check the portal for the selected period rather than assuming both apply.
Which GST return do you need to file?
GSTR-1 reports outward supplies. GSTR-3B is the summary return and payment workflow. The GST Portal lists exceptions to the ordinary GSTR-1 obligation, including composition taxpayers and input service distributors (ISDs). Confirm your form obligations and filing frequency on the portal for your taxpayer type and period. GST Portal: Returns

For GSTR-1, the portal’s general due-date framework is the 11th of the following month for monthly filers, or the 13th of the month after the quarter for quarterly filers. Government notifications can extend dates, so the due date shown for the selected period and any current notification take precedence over the general framework. GST Portal: Returns
Filing order matters: the portal requires the preceding GSTR-1 to be filed before a later GSTR-1, and the period’s GSTR-1 before its GSTR-3B. Prior GSTR-3B filing restrictions may also prevent proceeding with GSTR-1. If a period’s tile is blocked, check the outstanding return sequence and period before trying again. GST Portal: Returns

How to file GSTR-1
You can prepare a return by entering information online, using the GST Portal’s Returns Offline Tool and uploading its JSON, or using a third-party application service provider (ASP) through a GST Suvidha Provider (GSP). These are preparation routes, not rankings; choose one that fits your records, transaction volume, and internal review process. GST Portal: Returns
- Open the return period. Sign in to the GST Portal and go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard. Select the financial year and month or quarter, then open the GSTR-1 tile.
- Enter or upload applicable outward-supply details. Depending on your transactions, relevant tables may cover B2B invoices, eligible B2C reporting, credit and debit notes, exports, advances, amendments, exempt, nil-rated or non-GST supplies, and HSN/SAC summaries. Complete only the tables applicable to your transactions and taxpayer category.
- Check entries against your records. Verify GSTIN, invoice number and date, place of supply, tax treatment, taxable value, tax amounts, and required HSN details. The portal validates HSN fields, warns about certain mismatches between Table 12 totals and related supply tables, and rejects duplicate supply invoices. GST Portal: Returns Offline Tool user guide
- Generate the summary and clear errors. After online entry or upload, generate the GSTR-1 summary. The tile’s invoice count may not update until the summary is refreshed. If an upload produces an error file, download it, correct the source records in the offline tool, regenerate the JSON, and upload again. GST Portal: Returns
- Review and file. Inspect the consolidated summary before filing. Submit using the authorized signatory’s Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Electronic Verification Code (EVC). Retain the Application Reference Number (ARN) and view or download the filed return. GST Portal: Returns Offline Tool user guide
How to file GSTR-3B
From the Returns Dashboard, open the relevant GSTR-3B tile, prepare the return, and review the draft liability and payment details before filing. Complete payment or offset as applicable, then file with DSC or EVC. The portal’s nil-return guide documents the preview, filing, and download stages as part of this workflow. GST Portal: GSTR-3B FAQs
Do not treat a blank sales section as enough to qualify for a nil GSTR-3B. The portal’s conditions include no applicable auto-populated data from GSTR-1/IFF or GSTR-2B, no manual entries, and no outstanding interest or late fee. Check the live return and preview before selecting a nil filing route. GST Portal: GSTR-3B FAQs
Fix common GST return filing errors
Read the exact portal message and match it to the affected return or record. The remedies below reflect the portal guidance; a similar-looking error can have a different cause, so follow the live message and current instructions.

| Error or symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| Invoices or counts do not appear in the GSTR-1 tile | Generate or refresh the GSTR-1 summary, then check for pending or errored records before entering invoices again. The tile count may update only after summary generation. GST Portal: Returns |
| HSN code is rejected or details are incomplete | Use the portal’s HSN description and code lookup, and check which HSN requirements apply to your turnover and current rules. Do not guess a code. GST Portal: Returns Offline Tool user guide |
| Table 12 totals do not match related tables | Reconcile taxable values and tax amounts in the summary against invoice-level entries and the related supply tables. GST Portal: Returns Offline Tool user guide |
| Duplicate invoice validation | Check whether the document was already entered online, included in another upload batch, or reported in another period. The portal does not accept duplicate supply invoices. GST Portal: Returns Offline Tool user guide |
| “File could not be uploaded” or JSON structure validation failure | Use the latest offline tool, download the error report, correct the source data, regenerate the JSON, and retry. One documented example is a missing required unit-of-measure field in HSN details. Avoid editing generated JSON blindly. GST Portal: Downloads and news |
| Amendment or credit/debit note cannot find its original invoice | Confirm that the referenced invoice is in return history and identified correctly. If it is genuinely missing, upload the original before proceeding. GST Portal: Downloads and news |
| GSTR-3B says earlier information was not saved properly | Return to the tiles, open each relevant section, verify the data, and save it again. Proceed to payment or offset and filing only after the portal confirms the return is saved. GST Portal: Downloads and news |
| A later period cannot be filed | Check whether a required earlier GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B is outstanding, then file periods in the required order. GST Portal: Returns |
Correct a mistake in GSTR-1
Before filing
Uploaded invoice details remain in draft until the statement is filed. At that stage, you can edit or delete the records and correct them before submission. GST Portal: Returns
After GSTR-1 is filed, before that period’s GSTR-3B
The portal provides optional GSTR-1A to add omitted records or amend records for the same period. It becomes available after GSTR-1 is filed or after its due date, whichever is later; it is available once for that period and must be filed before that period’s GSTR-3B. Changes flow into the filer’s GSTR-3B. GST Portal: Returns
Supplies added or amended through GSTR-1A appear in the recipient’s GSTR-2B for the next tax period, not necessarily the same period’s statement. GST Portal: Returns
After GSTR-3B is filed
The portal guidance cited here does not establish a general option to edit or reopen a filed GSTR-3B. For a correction involving tax liability or input tax credit (ITC), check current GST law and official instructions or consult a qualified GST practitioner rather than assuming the return can simply be revised.
Reconcile GSTR-2B before claiming ITC
GSTR-2B is a read-only, static ITC statement: recipients cannot add or change supplier documents in it. Reconcile it against your books and supplier documents; contact the supplier about missing source documents. Avoid claiming the same credit twice, make reversals when required, and pay reverse-charge tax as applicable. GST Portal: GSTR-2B FAQs
This guide describes the ordinary GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B portal workflow, not every taxpayer category or exceptional filing case. Due dates, validations, JSON schemas, and portal functions can change; check the live GST Portal and applicable government notifications for the period you are filing.
