|---|---|
| A copy of an invoice for something you bought | Request the invoice from the supplier or merchant that issued it. The official material cited here does not establish a universal buyer-facing GST Portal flow for downloading any supplier’s individual PDF. |
| To check an e-invoice you received | Verify its signed JSON file or signed QR-code string through the e-invoice system’s “Verify Signed Invoice” function, or use the official QR verification tool described by GSTN. Compare the returned details with your invoice. GSTN e-invoicing FAQ |

How to check the details on an invoice
CBIC’s invoice rules specify particulars to look for, including the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive invoice serial number unique for the financial year; the issue date; recipient details; and details of the goods or services. Check these against the transaction and the supplier information. CBIC, Central Goods and Services Tax Rules

This is a completeness check, not proof that an invoice is genuine. Matching fields do not replace checking signed e-invoice data when the document is an e-invoice.
How to verify an e-invoice’s signed data or QR code
- Obtain the signed JSON file or the signed QR-code string associated with the e-invoice. A QR image on its own may not be enough if the verification route requires the signed data or string.
- Open GSTN’s e-invoice system and choose “Verify Signed Invoice,” or use the official QR verification app or tool described by GSTN. GSTN e-invoicing FAQ
- Upload the signed JSON file or submit the signed QR-code string as requested by the verification tool.
- Compare the information returned with the invoice you received, including the supplier, recipient, invoice number, date and supply details. Investigate any mismatch with the supplier before relying on the document.
How a business downloads e-invoice details for GSTR-1
The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 guide documents an Excel download of details auto-populated from e-invoices, as well as an “E-invoice Download History” area for downloads that are still being generated. This route is for a taxpayer’s return data; it should not be confused with getting a buyer’s copy of an individual supplier invoice. Portal labels and workflows can change, so follow the current GSTR-1 guide and the labels shown in your account. GST Portal GSTR-1 user guide

What e-invoicing means—and what it does not
For applicable businesses, e-invoicing involves reporting specified GST documents to an Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) to obtain an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and signed data, including a QR code. The business prepares the invoice in its own accounting, billing or ERP system and reports its details to the IRP. As GSTN explains, “It doesn’t mean generation of invoice by a Government portal.” GSTN e-invoicing overview GSTN e-invoicing FAQ
Not every GST invoice is an e-invoice. Whether e-invoicing applies to a business depends on current notifications, so do not assume that an invoice without e-invoice data is invalid solely for that reason.
