Export your cards from the app that currently holds them, keep an untouched backup in a separate location, and inspect the files before importing anything. Export formats preserve different things: card text may transfer while images, audio, formatting, or review scheduling do not. Check what the source can export and what the destination can import before deleting, replacing, or overwriting a collection.
What to check before you export
First identify which account owns each deck and whether you created it yourself. Export eligibility can depend on the app, the set’s creator, and your account plan. Then decide what you need to preserve: card text, formatting, media, and review or scheduling data are distinct, and one export file may not contain them all.
- Text and formatting: Check whether fields, line breaks, and other formatting survive in the chosen format.
- Images and audio: Confirm that media is included in the export, not merely displayed in the app.
- Review data: Check whether the export contains scheduling or review history. Do not assume another app can read it.
- Import behavior: Find out whether the destination merges, duplicates, or replaces existing cards.
There is no universal flashcard format established by these app-specific instructions that preserves everything across platforms. A successful text import is not proof that media or review data transferred.

Anki: choose a format for the data you need
Anki’s export documentation distinguishes plain-text notes from packaged exports. A package can contain cards, notes, note types, and bundled sounds or images. For a full collection backup, select the options to include scheduling information and media if you need them. A text file can help move card content, but it is not equivalent to a complete collection backup.

Quizlet: export only eligible sets from the website
- Open a set you created on the Quizlet website.
- Select Export.
- Choose how terms and definitions should be arranged.
- Copy the resulting text and save it as your backup.
Quizlet’s export instructions say that sets copied from another user cannot be exported through this method and images are not available in the export. The text should not be treated as a full media archive.
Brainscape: export and expect possible conversion
Brainscape says Pro users can export a deck to files that can be opened in Excel and may be re-uploaded to Brainscape or another flashcard platform. Its backup guidance and migration guidance describe CSV or text workflows, which can involve manual conversion. Check current account eligibility and import options in your account. Follow the service’s terms and respect copyright when handling material from another study community.

Back up safely before switching
- Identify the source of every deck. Note which account contains it, who created it, and whether it is a copy of someone else’s set.
- Export using the most complete available format. If using Anki, deliberately enable media and scheduling when those matter to you.
- Back up every version before resolving conflicts. If devices or profiles have different changes, preserve each one before choosing a sync or overwrite option.
- Keep the original export untouched. Make a second copy in a separate storage location. A USB flash drive is one optional offline location, not a requirement.
- Inspect the exported files. Check that expected cards and fields are present, and open media files or sample cards to verify images and audio. Look for formatting and scheduling data if the format is supposed to include them.
- Check the destination and test a small copy if practical. Confirm accepted formats and whether import merges, duplicates, or replaces content before importing the full export.
- Keep the source account and backup for now. Remove or overwrite nothing until you have checked the imported collection in the destination.
Prevent accidental replacement in Anki
Anki’s manual warns that importing a full collection package replaces the current collection’s cards with those in the package. Treat this as replacement, not a merge: keep a backup of the destination collection and of any other device or profile with separate changes before importing or resolving a sync conflict. Anki’s sync guidance advises backing up each device or profile first when dealing with conflicts.
The same caution applies to AnkiMobile collection transfer. Its transfer instructions use a collection.colpkg file; importing it replaces the collection already on the device and does not merge separate changes made in two locations. Bring recent changes together before transfer, and retain a backup of the existing collection.

Verify the import before retiring the old app
After importing, compare representative cards with the source: include cards with long text, unusual formatting, images, and audio if your deck uses them. Check review or scheduling data separately; successful card-content import does not establish that study history transferred. If something is missing, preserve the source and original export, then check the destination’s import options before trying again.
