First establish what price is being forecast and when; then inspect the assumptions, compare forecasts on equivalent terms, and check the forecaster’s dated record against actual outcomes. A range or probability forecast is useful only if its uncertainty is well calibrated and its width is informative.
Start by defining what the prediction actually claims
“Ethereum price” usually means the market price of ether (ETH), Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency; Ethereum is the network. ETH pays transaction fees and is required for validating and proposing mainnet blocks. It is also used as collateral in decentralized-finance lending and as a unit of account in NFT marketplaces. These roles can inform a forecast’s demand assumptions, but they do not mechanically determine ETH’s price. Before considering whether a target sounds plausible, record the details that make it testable:
- Issuer and publication date: Who made the forecast, and what information could they have known then?
- Asset and currency: Is it ETH, and is the target in US dollars or another currency?
- Horizon and target date: Is the forecast for a particular date, a period average, or a general time window?
- Forecast form: Is it a point estimate, a range, or a probability distribution?
- Price reference: Which market, index, or other reference will determine the realized value?
A target without a horizon or a clear definition of the outcome cannot be scored fairly. Preserve the forecast as originally published; a revised target is a new forecast, not evidence that the original one was right.

Inspect the assumptions behind the number
Read the explanation before judging the target. A useful forecast identifies the conditions that would make its outcome more or less likely, and distinguishes measured inputs from judgments and scenario choices. For ETH, relevant assumptions can include:
- Use and demand: Network activity, transaction fees, adoption, and Ethereum’s market share. Activity data alone does not produce a price target; the forecast must explain how it connects activity to demand for ETH.
- Issuance and fee burning: Validator rewards create ETH, while Ethereum burns base fees. The amount burned varies with network demand, and issuance depends in part on the amount staked. A forecast should say how it models all three rather than treating “deflationary” or “scarce” as a complete explanation.
- Competition and execution: Upgrades, competing assets, and the reliability of trading infrastructure may affect assumptions or outcomes. These are scenario risks, not certain catalysts.
- Regulation and market access: Rules and the availability of trading venues can affect market conditions. The SEC’s March 17, 2026 release describes a joint SEC-CFTC interpretation concerning how federal securities laws apply to categories of crypto assets and transactions, including protocol staking. It is a US federal interpretation, not a global rule.
- Broader market conditions: Risk appetite, expectations, and supply and demand can matter alongside Ethereum-specific developments. An SEC-filed 2024 Form 10-K disclosure identifies these and other risks, including network operations, trading platforms, and regulation; its historical volatility information is not a forecast of future volatility.
Ask which assumption has the greatest influence on the result, what could invalidate it, and how the downside case differs from the central case. Precise arithmetic does not mean the future is known precisely.

Compare forecasts only on equivalent terms
Two predictions are comparable only when they address substantially the same question. Align their information dates, quote currencies, horizon, and target definitions. A 12-month point estimate is not a direct alternative to a 2030 scenario, and a forecast issued after a major market event should not be compared as if it had the same information set as one issued earlier.

When a forecaster provides base, upside, and downside cases, compare those cases with other forecasts that offer similar scenarios. Note whether each case is conditional on particular assumptions. Do not select only the most dramatic number from a forecast and treat it as the forecaster’s expected outcome.

Check the record against outcomes
Forecast accuracy is a question of repeat performance, not whether one memorable call eventually came true. Look for an archived record with publication timestamps, defined horizons, and enough detail to match each prediction to a realized value. Score the original forecast at its stated horizon, and compare performance with a simple, relevant baseline. Do not count retrospective explanations or revised targets as original predictions.
The comparison method should be chosen before looking at results. For point targets, select a point-error measure in advance and assess many forecasts across the relevant dates and horizons; a single successful prediction is weak evidence of skill. For probabilistic forecasts and ranges, evaluate both calibration and sharpness: a broad interval may cover the outcome often but say little that is useful. Gneiting and colleagues’ work on strictly proper scoring rules describes methods for assessing probabilistic forecasts; interval scores can account for both interval width and misses.

Use scenario papers as examples of assumptions, not proof
A concrete illustration is VanEck Research’s paper dated April 30, 2023. It presented a 2030 ETH scenario with a stated $11,849 target and valuation inputs that included transaction fees, MEV, “Security as a Service,” market capture, and staking assumptions. VanEck described its scenarios as simulations for illustrative purposes, not financial advice, a buy/sell recommendation, or a projection of future performance.

To judge accuracy, a reader would need a defined outcome date and a method for scoring the forecast against what happened.

Separate an ETH forecast from an investment product’s return
A forecast for ETH does not automatically forecast the return from an exchange-traded product (ETP) that holds or tracks ether. An ETP may have sponsor fees and can diverge from ETH’s price. SEC staff’s September 9, 2024 investor bulletin also notes that spot bitcoin and ether ETPs are not registered as investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Evaluate the ETH scenario separately from the wrapper’s tracking and costs.
The SEC’s investor materials address different scopes: its 2024 bulletin discusses risks relevant to spot ETP investors, including volatility, tracking differences, market risks, and sponsor fees; its March 23, 2023 alert warns that investments in crypto asset securities can be exceptionally volatile and speculative, with risks including illiquidity, platform failure, opaque ownership or control, and regulatory restrictions. Neither publication predicts ETH’s price direction.

- Write down the claim as published: issuer, date, asset, currency, horizon, outcome definition, and whether it is a point, range, or probability.
- Identify its drivers: separate observed inputs from assumptions about use, supply, staking, competition, regulation, and market conditions.
- Find comparable forecasts: align dates and terms before comparing targets or scenarios.
- Look for a dated track record: match original forecasts to outcomes at the promised horizon and compare them with a relevant baseline.
- Choose appropriate scoring: use a preselected point-error measure for point forecasts; assess calibration and sharpness for ranges or probabilities.
- Stress-test the explanation: identify the pivotal assumption and the conditions that would break the forecast.
- Check the object of the claim: distinguish ETH’s market price from the return of an ETP or another investment wrapper.
