Align’s aligner growth is outpacing its scanner business, but pricing, margins, risks and forecast earnings all shape the ALGN investment case.

Align Technology’s latest results show two different businesses moving in opposite directions: in Q2 2026, Invisalign-led Clear Aligner revenue grew 8.2% year over year, while Imaging Systems and CAD/CAM Services revenue fell 10.8%. That split, together with pressure on revenue per case and unusual items affecting reported margins, matters more than any single growth rate or P/E ratio. Evaluating ALGN means testing whether case growth can translate into durable revenue, profit and cash flow—and whether the share price already assumes that recovery.

What does Align Technology sell, and where does its revenue come from?

Align Technology designs, manufactures and markets Invisalign clear aligners, Vivera retainers, iTero intraoral scanners and related services, and exocad CAD/CAM software. The company reports two segments: Clear Aligner and Systems and Services. Align says Invisalign remains its majority revenue stream.

  • Clear Aligner: comprehensive and non-comprehensive treatment packages, plus non-case revenue such as retainers, training, professional adjustment tools and selected accessories.
  • Systems and Services: scanner systems and upgrades, lease and pre-owned scanner revenue, subscriptions, disposables, pay-per-scan services and exocad software.

That mix matters because scanner sales and aligner treatment packages can have different growth and pricing patterns. Total company revenue can conceal a strong result in one segment and a weak one in the other.

Is Align’s revenue growth accelerating?

The latest reported quarter is stronger than the full-year 2025 growth rate, but growth is uneven by segment. The figures below are company-reported; fiscal 2025 is the year ended in 2025, and Q2 2026 is the quarter reported in Align’s July 29, 2026 earnings release.

Period and measure Revenue Year-over-year change Related volume signal
Fiscal 2025, total $4,035.0 million +0.9% Clear Aligner cases +4.7%; teen and growing-patient volume +7.8%
Fiscal 2025, Clear Aligner $3,245.4 million +0.5% Revenue per case shipment fell 3.9%, from $1,295 in 2024 to $1,245 in 2025
Fiscal 2025, Systems and Services $789.6 million +2.7% Segment-specific volume comparison not stated in the 2025 figures summarized here
Q2 2026, total $1,056.2 million +4.3% —
Q2 2026, Clear Aligner $870.9 million +8.2% 691.8 thousand cases, +7.4%
Q2 2026, Imaging Systems and CAD/CAM Services $185.3 million −10.8% —

The 2025 comparison shows why case growth is not enough on its own: more cases accompanied lower revenue per case shipment. In Q2 2026, aligner revenue growth was mainly driven by higher volume. For the six months, Align said volume and favorable foreign exchange helped, while discounting and a mix shift toward lower-priced countries and products partly offset growth. Revenue per case is therefore a useful companion to case volume, not a substitute for it.

The Q2 adoption measures add operating context but do not independently establish future demand. Align reported roughly 23 million people treated with Invisalign worldwide as of June 30, 2026, 89.2 thousand doctor submitters in Q2 2026, and utilization of 7.8 cases per doctor.

How much of Align’s reported profit is a reliable trend?

Reported margins need context. Fiscal 2025 operating income was $545.8 million, a 13.5% operating margin; net income was $410.4 million and diluted EPS was $5.65. Align’s 2025 Form 10-K attributed gross-margin pressure to restructuring charges, impairments, depreciation on disposed assets and lower average selling prices, partly offset by operating efficiencies. Within Clear Aligner, the company cited $77 million of accelerated depreciation on assets disposed of other than by sale and lower ASPs; Systems and Services also faced lower ASPs and a $15 million inventory impairment.

Q2 2026’s GAAP and non-GAAP results tell different stories. Align’s July 29 release reported a $37.5 million estimated UK VAT liability inclusive of interest, and said foreign exchange reduced year-over-year operating margin by about 1.4 percentage points. Non-GAAP figures exclude certain items under the company’s reconciliation; they are not interchangeable with GAAP results.

Q2 2026 measure Company-reported result How to read it
Gross margin, GAAP 71.7% Quarterly reported margin; affected by the period’s costs and mix
Operating margin, GAAP 14.6% Includes reported items such as the estimated VAT liability
Operating margin, non-GAAP 22.9% Adjusted measure; review Align’s reconciliation to see exclusions
Net income, GAAP $108.3 million Quarterly result
Diluted EPS, GAAP $1.51 Quarterly result
Diluted EPS, non-GAAP $2.64 Adjusted measure, not the same earnings basis as GAAP EPS

Management also expected additional restructuring and accelerated depreciation in Q3 2026. A single quarter’s margin—especially a quarter with specified unusual items—is not a sound basis for annualizing earnings. Compare the GAAP trend, the reconciliation of adjusted figures, and cash generation across periods.

What does management expect for 2026?

These are forecasts from Align’s July 29, 2026 release, not reported results. They provide a testable baseline for assessing whether the current operating trajectory is improving.

Outlook item Management’s July 2026 expectation
Fiscal 2026 total revenue Growth of 3%–4%
Fiscal 2026 Clear Aligner volume Growth of about 6%; ASP flat to slightly down
Fiscal 2026 Systems and Services revenue Decline of 6%–8%
Fiscal 2026 GAAP gross margin 70.2%–70.5%
Fiscal 2026 GAAP operating margin 15.1%–15.6%
Fiscal 2026 non-GAAP operating margin About 23.7%
Q3 2026 worldwide revenue $1.000–$1.020 billion
Q3 2026 Clear Aligner volume Mid-single-digit year-over-year growth
Q3 2026 pricing and Systems and Services Sequentially lower Clear Aligner ASP from geographic mix and FX; Systems and Services revenue expected to decline sequentially and year over year

The scanner outlook illustrates why units and revenue can diverge. Management expected double-digit scanner shipment growth, while also forecasting a Systems and Services revenue decline as customers shifted toward lower-priced scanners and lease, rental or certified pre-owned models. Shipment growth alone does not establish revenue or profit growth when the sales model and average selling price are changing.

What risks could weaken the investment case?

  • Pricing, volume and mix: Align’s filings identify lower volume or ASP as risks to revenue, gross profit, operating profit and net income. Discounts, geography, channel and product mix can dilute revenue per case even when case counts rise.
  • Competition and substitution: Align identifies traditional wires and brackets, clear-aligner rivals, laboratories, startups, doctors, dental service organizations and direct-to-consumer businesses as competitive factors. Scanner alternatives include other intraoral scanners and traditional impression workflows. Lower-priced alternatives or faster technology changes could pressure adoption and pricing.
  • Scanner economics: The expected 2026 Systems and Services decline and shift toward lower-priced equipment or rental models may persist even if more units are placed. Investors should distinguish shipments from recognized revenue and margins.
  • Costs and operating leverage: Restructuring, impairments and accelerated depreciation have affected reported profitability; 2026 guidance also includes restructuring, depreciation and legal-settlement costs. Margin recovery is more persuasive if it comes from repeatable efficiencies rather than favorable timing or exclusions.
  • Currency, tariffs and operations: Q2 foreign exchange affected reported margin. Align’s 2025 Form 10-K describes tariff exposure, cross-border production and supply chains, and geopolitical risks, including operations in Mexico and iTero operations headquartered in Israel. These factors may affect cost, demand or execution.
  • UK VAT uncertainty: Align said the UK Upper Tribunal overturned an earlier VAT exemption decision on July 7, 2026. From September 7, invoices began including 20% VAT on applicable aligners and retainers while list prices stayed unchanged. The company said it intended to appeal; the ultimate outcome was uncertain in its release.

How should an investor evaluate ALGN’s valuation?

Use valuation figures as dated inputs, not as a target price. ALGN closed at $143.74 on October 2, 2026, the latest completed U.S. market session before October 4. Stock Analysis reported an approximately $10.21 billion market capitalization, $9.23 billion enterprise value, 24.97 trailing P/E and 12.13 forward P/E in its valuation snapshot last updated October 2, 2026. These are provider calculations, not Align-reported statistics; different providers or earnings definitions can produce different multiples. Forward P/E depends especially on forecast earnings.

The apparent gap between trailing and forward P/E makes the earnings assumption central: the forward multiple is meaningful only if the earnings used in its denominator are achieved and of reasonable quality. The available figures do not establish a defensible intrinsic value, and no single multiple proves that the stock is cheap or expensive.

Build a valuation case from operating assumptions

  1. Set a revenue path. Model Clear Aligner cases separately from revenue per case, including ASP, geography and product mix. Do not assume volume growth flows through one-for-one to revenue.
  2. Decide what happens to scanners. Test both a recovery in Systems and Services and continued weakness, while separating unit placements from revenue and margin effects of lower-priced or rental models.
  3. Normalize profitability carefully. Compare GAAP with reconciled non-GAAP margins, and decide which restructuring, depreciation, impairment and legal-related effects recur or are genuinely exceptional.
  4. Check cash conversion. The Q2 2026 Form 10-Q reported $1,102.6 million in cash and cash equivalents at June 30, 2026 and $193 million of operating cash flow for the quarter. Compare cash flow with earnings over multiple periods and account for capital spending before treating cash as available to shareholders.
  5. Compare valuation measures on matching periods. Pair P/E with an enterprise-value measure and, where suitable, cash-flow yield. State the earnings or cash-flow period, provider and assumptions; mismatched periods can make comparisons misleading.

An attractive scenario would require enough sustained aligner growth and margin quality to support future earnings and cash generation at the price paid. A demanding scenario would be one in which weaker ASP or scanner revenue, persistent costs, or competitive discounting leaves projected earnings below what the forward multiple assumes. These are conditions to test, not price targets.

What should investors monitor next?

  • Clear Aligner case growth alongside revenue per case and the effects of geography, discounting and product mix.
  • Doctor submitters and utilization, interpreted as company-reported adoption indicators rather than proof of future demand.
  • Clear Aligner growth relative to Systems and Services revenue and margins.
  • GAAP and non-GAAP margin reconciliations, including restructuring and accelerated depreciation.
  • Operating cash flow and capital spending relative to reported earnings.
  • Changes in management guidance, tariff exposure and the UK VAT appeal.

Align CEO Joe Hogan characterized Q2 2026 as “a solid second quarter,” citing record revenue of $1.06 billion and record Clear Aligner volume of 691.8 thousand cases. That is management’s assessment; the segment split, earnings quality and subsequent results are the evidence investors can use to test it.
