First American Financial Corporation disclosed a cyberattack in December 2023 that disrupted company systems and real-estate transaction services. HousingWire’s January 4 restoration snapshot named First American Trust and the PRISM, AgentNet, ACI, Charles Jones, FraudGuard, DataTree, and DataTrace platforms, along with the First American Home Warranty site. Those dated reports do not prove that all subsidiary services returned at the same time.
Was data stolen in the First American breach?
First American disclosed that data had been exfiltrated from certain company systems. The filings reviewed do not identify the categories or volume of data, the number of people affected, or any individual-notification totals. Did the cyberattack delay real-estate closings?
Yes. In its January 12, 2024 SEC amendment, First American said some fourth-quarter transactions were delayed into the first quarter of 2024, some moved to other providers and resulted in lost revenue, and some notices of title-policy issuance were delayed. What financial impact did First American report?
First American said in January 2024 that it expected a material effect on fourth-quarter 2023 results, but did not expect a material effect on its overall financial condition or ongoing results. In the same February release, management said title orders and related product demand appeared to have returned to normal levels and that it expected no significant ongoing impact.
