When an AI company reports a large revenue-like figure, first identify exactly what the number measures. Recognized revenue, annual recurring revenue (ARR), bookings, deferred revenue, cash collected, and a forecast are different things. Then test whether customers are paying independently for ongoing value, whether the business can deliver that value profitably, and how much the valuation depends on uncertain assumptions.
There is no single reliable “AI company” multiple or universal definition of ARR. A model developer, a cloud-compute provider, and an application company can have very different costs, capital needs, and sources of competitive advantage. This guide gives you a way to assess the evidence without turning uncertain forecasts into false precision. It is a general framework, not a current estimate or investment recommendation for a particular company.

Start by identifying what the revenue number actually is
Before comparing growth rates or applying a valuation multiple, write down the metric’s exact name, definition, period, and measurement date. Also record its currency, geography, whether it is historical or projected, and whether it is audited or unaudited. A headline that says “revenue” may refer to a different measure from the revenue recognized in financial statements.

|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | Revenue recorded for a reporting period under the company’s applicable accounting rules. | That the same amount will recur, that cash has already been collected, or that the business is profitable. |
| ARR | A company-defined annualized measure, often based on contracted subscription business. | A standardized accounting measure, recognized revenue, cash collected, or a forecast. The definition must be checked issuer by issuer. |
| Bookings or contract value | Orders or contractual commitments, as defined and reported by the company. | That the full amount has been delivered, recognized as revenue, collected, or renewed. |
| Deferred revenue | Amounts received or invoiced in advance that have not yet been recognized as revenue under the applicable policy. | Additional current-period revenue or proof that the contract will renew. |
| Cash collected | Payments received by the company during a stated period. | Revenue recognition in that period, future renewals, or attractive unit economics. |
| Forecast or target | A management estimate, target, or projection for a future period. | Historical performance or a contractual commitment from customers. |
These distinctions are not merely accounting technicalities. They change what you can infer about demand, timing, and risk. A signed multiyear contract can support a more concrete expectation of future activity than an informal target, but it does not mean the full contract value is already recognized or collected.

ARR is a definition, not a universal accounting category
Companies can calculate ARR differently. Look for the company’s own explanation: which contracts count, whether only signed terms are included, whether usage-based sales qualify, and how the company treats cancellations, renewals, discounts, pilots, or services. Do not compare two ARR figures until you know whether their definitions and measurement dates are sufficiently alike.
A useful example is Cyabra, Inc.’s Form 10-Q filed May 15, 2026. For that issuer, ARR is the annualized contract value of signed term-based contracts lasting at least 12 months. The filing says its ARR measure is not GAAP, is separate from revenue and deferred revenue, is not a forecast, and does not guarantee renewal. That is Cyabra’s stated definition—not a definition that should be assumed for every AI company.
The same filing describes different revenue timing for different offerings: subscription and license payments received in advance are recorded as deferred revenue and amortized over the contract term, while managed-services revenue is recognized when the deliverable transfers. This illustrates why a company’s accounting policy and business mix matter when interpreting a headline figure.

A recurring label tells you how a company classifies a metric; it does not, on its own, show that customers will keep paying. Assess the underlying contracts and customer behavior. Separate binding commitments from pilots, short trials, nonbinding intentions, and arrangements that depend on milestones or continued financing.

- Contract terms: Is there a signed agreement? What is its duration? Can the customer cancel, reduce usage, or avoid renewal without a meaningful penalty?
- Renewal evidence: Have customers actually renewed, expanded, or increased paid use? A long initial term and a demonstrated renewal pattern are different evidence.
- Paid usage: Are users consuming the product at a level that creates revenue, or is reported adoption based on trials, free access, or internal experimentation?
- Customer independence: Is the paying party an independent end customer, or is the arrangement connected to an investor, cloud provider, infrastructure supplier, or strategic partner?
- Revenue concentration: How much depends on the largest customers or a small number of contracts? Losing one major buyer can affect a concentrated business more than a diversified one.
- Value to the buyer: Is the product tied to a useful outcome—such as a workflow improvement or service customers are willing to pay for—or is spending primarily experimental?
Strategic relationships require careful classification. An announcement involving a major partner might describe cash revenue, a purchase commitment, an investment, a cloud credit, or a combination. Those have different effects on cash, reported revenue, customer demand, and financing risk. Read the terms before treating a headline commitment as sales.
Grant Thornton’s analysis of AI-sector valuation cautions that ARR labels can conceal differences in contract and customer quality. Its discussion also distinguishes speculative spending on model training from inference spending to serve end-user demand. The distinction is useful because paid inference consumption may be more directly connected to current commercial use than capacity purchased in anticipation of future demand. Neither type of spending, by itself, proves that a particular company has attractive margins or durable demand.
Adoption is not the same as paid, mature deployment
Grant Thornton reports that McKinsey’s 2025 survey found 88% of firms used AI in at least one business function, while 1% considered their AI strategy mature. Those figures describe survey responses about adoption and maturity; they are not estimates of any company’s paid customers, revenue, or renewal prospects. For an individual business, look for its own evidence of paid deployment and expansion rather than using broad adoption statistics as a substitute.

| Business layer | Questions to investigate | Why the economics can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Physical infrastructure | What assets are required, how much capital is tied up, and how dependent is demand on continued investment in AI capacity? | Returns can be shaped by asset intensity, utilization, and the cycle of capacity investment. |
| Cloud and compute | Who buys capacity, how is usage priced, and how much depends on a small set of model developers or large customers? | Infrastructure costs and customer concentration can be material, and demand may be connected to customers’ own investment plans. |
| Foundation models | What are training and ongoing compute requirements? Can the model sustain differentiation, paid use, and pricing? | Large upfront training needs and continuing compute demands may make growth costly even when usage expands. |
| Tools and platforms | Does the product help customers build, deploy, manage, or govern AI? How sticky is it within customer workflows? | Economics depend on product scope, infrastructure dependencies, and whether customers continue paying for the platform. |
| Enterprise applications | Does the product solve a specific workflow or domain problem? Does it rely on third-party models, and can customers switch to alternatives? | An application may depend on outside models and compete through workflow integration, customer access, or domain-specific performance. |
The categories are starting points, not guarantees of shared economics. Two application vendors can have different compute bills, customer acquisition costs, pricing power, and renewal patterns. Investigate the actual company’s contracts, operating costs, and dependencies rather than assigning economics from its label.
Assess whether growth can turn into cash generation
Revenue growth matters only in context. A business can grow quickly while spending heavily to acquire customers, serve model queries, train systems, or secure scarce compute. When the company discloses them, examine gross margin and its direction, compute cost per unit of paid usage, customer acquisition cost and payback, capital expenditure, cash burn, financing needs, and customer concentration.
- Gross margin: Is the company retaining a larger share of each revenue dollar over time, or are serving and infrastructure costs rising alongside usage?
- Compute economics: What does it cost to serve paid usage? Is the cost stable as customers scale, and does pricing cover it?
- Customer acquisition: Where disclosed, how much does it cost to win a customer and how long does it take for gross profit to recover that cost?
- Capital and cash: How much investment is needed to support growth? Can the company fund that need from operations, or is additional financing likely to matter?
- Infrastructure dependency: Is compute available on durable commercial terms, or does the plan rely on preferential access, credits, or one provider?
Missing disclosures are not proof of poor performance, but they limit what an outside investor can verify. Mark an undisclosed metric as unknown rather than filling it with an industry assumption. If the valuation depends on a favorable margin or cost trajectory, make that assumption visible and test what happens if it fails.
Build a valuation range instead of trusting one precise figure
A discounted cash flow (DCF) model does not eliminate uncertainty. Its value is that it makes the assumptions behind a valuation inspectable. Lay out a forecast for revenue growth, margins, reinvestment and compute needs, terminal value, and discount rate. For an AI business, a revenue forecast without a view of the cost of serving that revenue can create a misleading picture of future cash flow.

Use scenarios tied to identifiable outcomes
When forecasts are weak, build a small number of materially different scenarios rather than extending one optimistic path as if it were certain. Each scenario should have a clear business hypothesis. Relevant possibilities include slower enterprise adoption, model commoditization, lower prices, loss of compute access, or successful expansion from experimentation into paid usage.
For each case, show the assumptions that drive revenue, margin, reinvestment, and cash generation. If you assign probabilities, explain why the cases merit those weights. A probability-weighted value can be useful, but the result is only as informative as the scenarios and probabilities behind it. Do not present extra decimal places as if they made a weak forecast more reliable.
Put each risk in one place
Choose deliberately whether a risk is reflected in forecast cash flows or in the discount rate. Grant Thornton describes macroeconomic and sector-wide risks as matters that may be reflected in the discount rate, while company-specific risks—such as customer concentration or losing access to compute—can be modeled through expected cash flows or scenarios. Its central discipline is to capture each risk once.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, if a downside scenario already reduces projected cash flow to reflect a possible loss of compute access, adding a second discount-rate premium for that same failure can count the risk twice. The appropriate treatment depends on the valuation and its assumptions; disclose the choice so a reader can see how the risk affects the range.

Show what moves the result
Test sensitivities for the assumptions that materially change value, such as revenue growth, margins, reinvestment needs, terminal assumptions, and discount rate. A sensitivity table or range can show whether the conclusion depends on one difficult-to-defend input. If a small change in a key assumption produces a very different value, that is important information, not a defect to hide.
Use more than one valuation lens when suitable evidence exists. Compare the DCF with carefully screened public-company or transaction evidence, but do not assume that a market multiple is meaningful merely because it is available. Grant Thornton notes that pure-play public AI comparables are limited, large reference companies are diversified, and AI business models differ. Document why each peer is economically comparable, whether a transaction includes strategic premiums or special liquidity rights, and whether its market conditions match the valuation date.
Keep the valuation date and information set explicit. AI markets can change quickly; information that emerged later should not be silently treated as known at an earlier date. A range tied to a stated date and visible assumptions is more useful than a single point estimate whose inputs are unclear.
Use a consistent comparison checklist
When comparing two or more AI businesses, put the same questions to each one. If an item is not disclosed, mark it as unknown and consider whether the gap is important enough to limit the comparison.
| Comparison area | Record for each company | Decision it helps answer |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue basis | Recognized historical revenue, ARR, bookings, contract value, deferred revenue, or projection; definition, period, measurement date, source, and audit status. | Are you comparing like with like, and how much of the figure is historical evidence? |
| Customer quality | Independent or strategically connected customer; binding term; renewal evidence; concentration; paid usage and customer outcomes. | How dependable and repeatable is demand? |
| Business economics | Gross margin, compute costs, capital intensity, cash burn, financing needs, and sensitivity to market-rate infrastructure. | Can the company support growth without economics deteriorating or requiring substantial new capital? |
| Competitive durability | Model differentiation, switching costs, lower-cost or open-source alternatives, pricing power, and risk of product obsolescence. | What could protect customer demand and margins as alternatives change? |
| Valuation evidence | DCF assumptions, peer-set fit, transaction terms, scenario probabilities, sensitivity range, and valuation date. | Does the valuation follow from evidence and explicit assumptions? |
| Risk and governance | Regulatory and data or intellectual-property exposure, compute-provider dependence, control rights, strategic-party conflicts, and minority-holder rights where relevant. | Could a legal, contractual, or governance issue affect value or an investor’s position? |
Questions to ask before relying on a headline figure
- Can I trace the number to a dated company disclosure? Find the filing or other primary statement, rather than relying only on a summary or an announcement.
- Does the company define the metric? Identify its contents and exclusions, and distinguish it from accounting revenue and cash.
- Are customers paying for deployed use? Separate actual paid usage and renewals from pilots, adoption claims, and prospective commitments.
- Is the demand independent? Determine whether a strategic partner, investor, or infrastructure supplier is also the customer or has another financial role.
- Can the company serve demand economically? Examine compute costs, margins, capital needs, and access to infrastructure.
- What would make the forecast fail? State plausible downside drivers, model them once, and show how sensitive the value is to assumptions.
- Are the comparisons fair? Check peer business models, transaction terms, and the date of the evidence before using a multiple.
Grant Thornton valuation expert Kate Lilleyman puts the aim in perspective: “The fact that AI valuations involve substantial uncertainty does not mean that expert evidence is unreliable or that valuation is arbitrary.” The practical implication is to make the evidence, judgments, and unresolved unknowns visible—not to treat uncertainty as a reason to abandon analysis or to manufacture a precise answer.
Grant Thornton’s practitioner analysis is guidance, not a regulator’s rule or a substitute for accounting advice, a company’s own filings, or transaction-specific valuation instructions. Cyabra’s filing is an issuer-specific illustration. For a named company, use its own current disclosures and definitions; without identifying a company, jurisdiction, instrument, and valuation date, no current company-specific revenue figure or valuation can be responsibly supplied.
