Test whether revenue turns into operating cash, whether that cash can fund development and debt obligations, and whether the business can withstand a delayed release or fading player interest. This framework applies to public companies; it is analysis, not a buy-or-sell recommendation.
Start with the business model and reporting period
First establish what the company sells and how it earns money. A publisher built around premium console and PC releases has different revenue timing from a free-to-play mobile operator, a subscription service, a platform owner, or a company licensing intellectual property. Some businesses combine several models, so keep reported segments separate where possible.

- Note the fiscal year-end and reporting currency before comparing periods.
- Check whether acquisitions or divestitures changed the company during the years being compared.
- Identify the main platforms, products, and revenue sources, including full-game sales, downloadable content, subscriptions, advertising, licensing, and in-game purchases where disclosed.
For a U.S. public company, use its latest Form 10-K for the annual picture and subsequent 10-Q filings for updates. Investor-relations earnings releases can provide timely results and outlook, but verify important claims against filed financial statements and notes. Private companies may not disclose equivalent detail, and non-U.S. reporting regimes can differ.
Determine what is driving growth—and whether bookings equal revenue
Track at least three fiscal years when available, then add quarterly or trailing-twelve-month context. Review GAAP revenue by segment, platform, geography, and content type where the company reports those details. Ask whether growth comes from a durable back catalog or recurring spending, a new release, an acquisition, licensing, price changes, or a single unusually strong quarter. Release timing and deferred revenue can make period-to-period comparisons lumpy.

Bookings are not a universal synonym for revenue. They are an issuer-defined operating measure. Read the company’s definition and reconciliation rather than assuming bookings and GAAP revenue cover the same activity or timing. Take-Two, for example, defines net bookings to include products and services sold digitally or physically during the period, including licensing fees, merchandise, in-game advertising, and publisher incentives.
Take-Two’s FY2026 Form 10-K reported net bookings of $6,721.0 million for fiscal 2026, up 19.0% from $5,648.0 million in fiscal 2025. The same filing reported GAAP net revenue of $6,656.4 million, compared with $5,633.6 million a year earlier. Its FY2026 earnings release described those results as $6.72 billion in bookings, up 19%, and $6.66 billion in GAAP net revenue, up 18%, for the year ended March 31, 2026. These are company-specific figures, not industry benchmarks. Take-Two FY2026 Form 10-K; Take-Two FY2026 earnings release.
The release said recurrent consumer spending represented 78% of both bookings and GAAP revenue in fiscal 2026. That illustrates the company’s reported mix, not a threshold that makes another publisher healthy. Recurrent spending can reduce reliance on one launch date, but it still depends on players remaining engaged and willing to spend.

Check whether growth produces profit and cash
Follow gross profit and margin, operating income or loss, net income or loss, and operating cash flow alongside revenue. Explain material gaps between those measures. Review notes for capitalized software development costs, amortization, stock-based compensation, restructuring, acquisition costs, and impairment charges. The key question is whether cash generation can support development, marketing, debt service, and other commitments over time—not whether one adjusted measure looks strong.
Take-Two reported an operating loss of $104.2 million and a net loss of $298.2 million in FY2026, compared with losses of $4,391.1 million and $4,478.9 million, respectively, in FY2025. The prior-year comparison included $3,545.2 million of goodwill impairment charges, with no corresponding expense in FY2026. The sharp improvement in reported losses therefore needs to be read alongside that accounting item, not treated as a like-for-like leap in underlying operations. Take-Two FY2026 Form 10-K.
Adjusted EBITDA and other non-GAAP measures can show how management views underlying performance, but they do not replace GAAP results or cash flow. Playtika’s FY2025 Form 10-K reported $2,755.4 million in revenue, a $206.4 million net loss, and $753.2 million in adjusted EBITDA. Read the company’s reconciliation to see what it excludes; the adjusted figure does not cancel out the net loss. Playtika FY2025 Form 10-K.

Assess liquidity, debt, and future funding needs
Read the balance sheet together with the cash-flow statement. Record cash and short-term investments, total debt, near-term maturities, interest expense, operating cash flow, and planned or committed development investment. Then ask:

- Is the cash unrestricted and readily available?
- Can operating cash flow cover ongoing investment and debt service?
- Do covenants constrain management’s options?
- Do upcoming maturities depend on refinancing or new equity?
- Have equity issuances funded operations, and what dilution did they create?
Take-Two reported $1,638.1 million in cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash at March 31, 2026, versus $1,559.2 million a year earlier. Its filing explains that the increase partly reflected an equity offering and positive product cash flow, while debt repayment and investments offset some of the increase. The total alone does not show how much cash is restricted or what obligations compete for it. Take-Two FY2026 Form 10-K.
Debt disclosures matter even when a company has cash on hand. Playtika identifies significant indebtedness, refinancing difficulty, and debt covenants as risks, illustrating why liquidity should be considered alongside obligations and access to financing. Playtika FY2025 Form 10-K.

Test portfolio durability and concentration risk
Identify the games, franchises, platforms, licensors, and—where disclosed—groups of paying users that drive results. Compare the largest contributors with the rest of the portfolio. A company reliant on one annual sports title, one mobile hit, or a small group of high-spending players is exposed if that source weakens.
Look for evidence that older games continue contributing, new releases can replace declines, and development teams can launch games on schedule and within budget. Playtika’s filings identify reliance on a limited number of games and users, player attraction and retention, and successful product development and launches as risks. Its disclosures are useful prompts for questions to ask of any publisher, not proof that all publishers have identical exposure. Playtika FY2025 Form 10-K.
Recurring virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases, and advertising can make results less dependent on a single launch date. They are not guaranteed recurring revenue: their durability rests on the health of the underlying games and continuing player engagement.

Use player and engagement metrics cautiously
Publishers may report daily or monthly active users (DAU or MAU), paying users, payer conversion, retention, average revenue per daily active user (ARPDAU), and bookings. Before relying on a metric, check its exact definition, measurement period, treatment of multiple accounts or devices, and whether the calculation changed. These measures may be company-defined and not independently verified.
PLAYSTUDIOS warns that its DAU, MAU, ARPDAU, daily paying user, and payer-conversion measures do not follow standardized industry methodologies and may differ from other companies’ calculations. Its filing also discusses measurement challenges involving multiple accounts, platform changes, data latency, bots, and third-party data. Do not compare raw user counts or monetization metrics across publishers unless the definitions and periods are sufficiently aligned. PLAYSTUDIOS FY2025 Form 10-K.
Read risk factors and accounting notes for what the headline numbers miss
Risk factors are not forecasts, but they identify dependencies management says could affect results. Look for risks tied to title delays or cancellations, development overruns, player-acquisition costs, platform policies, intellectual-property rights, licensing, cybersecurity, regulation, foreign exchange, acquisitions, and key personnel. Consider whether the company has a credible way to absorb a setback in its most important title or channel.

Accounting policies can also change how results appear. Take-Two identifies revenue recognition, capitalization and recognition of software development costs and licenses, goodwill and intangible-asset valuation, stock-based compensation, and taxes among its critical accounting policies. For an acquisitive publisher, examine how acquired goodwill and intangibles are valued and whether impairments indicate changed expectations about a studio or franchise. Take-Two FY2026 Form 10-K.
Compare companies on a like-for-like basis
When comparing publishers, line up fiscal periods and accounting bases, and keep their business models visible. A premium-release publisher and a mobile free-to-play operator may differ in timing, segment mix, and user economics, so a raw metric comparison can mislead.
| Comparison area | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Growth and revenue mix | Revenue growth, each issuer’s bookings definition, recurring spending, back-catalog contribution, release dependence, and segment mix | Shows whether growth reflects durable demand or a temporary launch or acquisition effect. |
| Profitability and cash conversion | Gross margin, operating and net results, operating cash flow, and the gap between adjusted metrics and GAAP | Tests whether reported growth can fund the business. |
| Balance-sheet resilience | Available cash, debt and maturities, interest burden, covenants, and reliance on refinancing or new equity | Shows the capacity to withstand setbacks without disruptive financing. |
| Portfolio durability | Revenue concentration by game, franchise, or platform; evidence of retention and replacement of aging hits | Reveals dependence on a narrow set of products or players. |
| Metric transparency | Clarity and consistency of definitions for users, payers, retention, and bookings | Determines whether operating indicators can be compared meaningfully. |
| Execution and accounting risk | Development schedules, acquisition integration, capitalization judgments, impairment exposure, and disclosed risks | Highlights potential pressure on future results and reported comparisons. |
Do not treat raw DAU, MAU, or bookings as directly comparable without reconciling definitions, periods, currencies, and business models. Likewise, compare margins only after considering segment mix and accounting treatment. The figures in company filings are evidence about those issuers, not valuation thresholds or sector averages.
