The most reliable way to estimate your U.S. Social Security retirement benefit is to sign in to your my Social Security account, check that your earnings record is accurate, and compare estimates for different claiming ages using realistic assumptions about future earnings. If you cannot use an account-linked estimate, SSA’s Online Calculator can work from the earnings history on your Social Security Statement. Its Quick Calculator is faster, but only a rough estimate.

How do I estimate my Social Security benefits?

  1. Open your personal estimate. Sign in to your my Social Security account and use the Retirement Estimate. It is based on the earnings record SSA has for you and can compare your estimate at ages 62, your full retirement age, and 70. You can also adjust expected future income.
  2. Check your earnings history. Compare the earnings shown in your account or Social Security Statement with your own records. Your estimate depends on covered earnings on your SSA record, so an error or missing year can affect the result. If something looks wrong, consult SSA’s instructions for reviewing and correcting an earnings record.
  3. Set a realistic future-earnings assumption. If you expect to keep working, estimate your likely future covered earnings rather than assuming either that your current pay continues unchanged or that you stop earning immediately. Run more than one scenario if your plans are uncertain.
  4. Compare claiming ages on the same assumptions. Review the monthly estimates for age 62, your full retirement age (FRA), and age 70. Hold the future-earnings assumption steady when comparing ages so the change you see is not also caused by a different work forecast.
  5. Consider whether you will work after claiming. If you start benefits before FRA and continue working, the retirement earnings test can affect payments before FRA. That is distinct from the calculation of your underlying retirement benefit.

SSA’s Benefits Planner summarizes the core calculation this way: “We base your retirement benefit on your highest 35 years of earnings and the age you start receiving benefits.” The estimate is therefore personal: two people with the same age can receive different amounts because their covered earnings histories and claiming ages differ.

How much Social Security will I get?

Your personal SSA estimate is the best starting point for an amount. It uses your earnings record and lets you test different future-income assumptions; a generic example or calculator result based on incomplete inputs cannot establish what you personally will receive.

Starting age SSA example monthly benefit
62 $2,969
Full retirement age $4,152
70 $5,181

These are SSA examples, not a universal maximum or a forecast for an individual. SSA explicitly cautions that there is no single maximum that applies to everyone; people with lower covered earnings may receive less. Use your own account estimate for a personal comparison, and keep the 2026 year attached to these example amounts.

The examples illustrate why it is useful to compare start ages, but they are not a comparison of what one person would collect over a lifetime. The monthly figure is only one part of the choice. Your earnings record, the age you claim, and whether you continue working all affect how to interpret a personal estimate. SSA’s tools can show amounts under different assumptions; they do not identify a universally best claiming age.

What affects a Social Security retirement estimate?

Your highest 35 years of covered earnings

SSA uses up to 35 years of covered earnings in calculating a retirement benefit. “Covered” earnings are earnings subject to Social Security taxes, up to the annual taxable maximum. Pension income and investment income are not covered wages for this calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have fewer than 35 years with covered earnings, SSA includes zero-earning years in the calculation. Those zeros can bring down the earnings average used for the benefit. A year with relatively low covered earnings can also be part of the 35-year record; a later year with higher covered earnings may replace it. That is why working longer can change an estimate even when you already qualify for retirement benefits.

Think of the 35-year rule as a reason to review the full earnings history, not just your most recent salary. If your work record includes gaps or years with lower covered earnings, additional years of work may change the set of years used. If you already have 35 years, a new year can still matter if its covered earnings are higher than a year included in the calculation. The effect is not determined by the number of years you work alone; it depends on how those earnings compare with the years already on your record.

The age you start benefits

Age 62 is the earliest age to start retirement benefits. Starting before your FRA reduces the monthly amount compared with starting at FRA. Waiting beyond FRA can increase the monthly amount through delayed retirement credits, up to age 70. The comparison is about the monthly benefit at different start dates; it does not, by itself, identify the best age for every person.

Your earnings record and future work

The personal Retirement Estimate lets you change expected future income and see how that assumption affects the estimate. If you plan to keep working, an estimate that assumes no future earnings may differ from one that includes additional covered earnings. The effect depends on your record: later earnings can matter if they add a year to the top 35 or replace a lower-earning year.

Make future earnings assumptions explicit. If you are unsure whether you will keep working or what you will earn, compare more than one plausible scenario rather than relying on a single projection. A scenario is an input to the estimate, not a promise about future wages. The closer the assumptions are to your likely covered earnings, the more useful the comparison will be for planning.

SSA also sets an annual taxable maximum. Covered earnings above that limit do not increase the Social Security benefit calculation for that year. The 2026 taxable maximum is $184,500, according to SSA. This is a 2026 figure, not a standing limit for future years.

Which SSA calculator should I use?

SSA tool Best use What to know
my Social Security Retirement Estimate Personalized estimate when you can access your SSA record Uses the earnings record associated with your account, compares a selected start date with ages 62, FRA, and 70, and allows future-income assumptions.
Online Calculator Estimate based on earnings history entered from your Social Security Statement It does not connect to your individual SSA record, so entry accuracy matters. SSA says it can display estimates in today’s dollars or future dollars. The calculator page stated in August 2026 that it had last been updated in August 2026.
Quick Calculator A fast, rough estimate using basic details Uses birth date, current earnings, and an intended work or retirement date. It estimates past earnings instead of retrieving your record, so results are especially rough when there is not a substantial earnings history.
Detailed Calculator Detailed or specialized cases Downloadable and more involved than the basic tools. SSA listed version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026, and said it incorporated assumptions from the 2026 Trustees Report. SSA recommends trying the simpler Online Calculator first for ordinary retirement estimates.
Early or Late Retirement Calculator Isolating how the start age affects an estimate Use SSA’s Retirement Age Calculator to establish your FRA first, since it depends on birth year.

If you cannot access your account

Use the earnings history on your Social Security Statement as the input for the Online Calculator. Enter the covered earnings carefully and make a deliberate choice between today’s dollars and future dollars when the calculator offers that choice. Those presentations are not interchangeable: future-dollar estimates reflect projected dollar values, while today’s-dollar estimates express amounts in current-dollar terms.

Before entering the history, gather the Statement and decide what future earnings assumption you want to test. The calculator depends on what you enter; it does not retrieve or verify the earnings history for you. Take care to distinguish the earnings recorded for each year from pension or investment income, which is not covered wages for this benefit calculation. If an entry is wrong or omitted, the output may not reflect the record SSA would use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you only need a quick ballpark

The Quick Calculator can provide a rough orientation without a full earnings-history entry. Treat it as a starting point, not a personalized decision figure: it estimates past earnings rather than using your actual SSA record. For a better estimate, move to the account-linked tool or enter the Statement history in the Online Calculator.

The Quick Calculator is most useful when you want an initial sense of how a basic set of details translates into an estimate. Its convenience comes with a trade-off: it does not look up the person’s actual earnings record. If the result will inform a claiming decision, check it against the account-linked estimate or the Online Calculator using the Statement history.

If your work included a pension not covered by Social Security

A pension from work not covered by Social Security can make an ordinary estimate harder to interpret. SSA’s Online Calculator information points people with such pensions to a special WEP version, and SSA’s calculator directory identifies a specialized tool. Use the current SSA tool and its instructions for your situation rather than assuming a particular adjustment or amount from a general estimate.

How does full retirement age affect the comparison?

Full retirement age is the age at which a person may receive an unreduced retirement benefit under the standard claiming-age schedule. It is set by birth year, not by a single age that applies to everyone. SSA’s 2026 Retirement Benefits publication lists the following schedule:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Birth year Full retirement age
1943–1954 66
1955 66 and 2 months
1956 66 and 4 months
1957 66 and 6 months
1958 66 and 8 months
1959 66 and 10 months
1960 or later 67

For people born on January 1, SSA uses the previous year when determining FRA. If your birth date is near a schedule boundary, use SSA’s Retirement Age Calculator rather than estimating from a rounded age.

To compare your options, look at the estimated monthly amounts for the same earnings assumption at age 62, your exact FRA, and age 70. Claiming earlier means a lower monthly amount than claiming at FRA; delaying after FRA can increase the amount through age 70. Your account estimate can show the difference for your own earnings record, but it cannot decide which trade-off suits your finances, health, household, or plans.

Keep the exact FRA in the comparison rather than treating “age 66” or “age 67” as a rule for everyone. For birth years from 1955 through 1959, FRA increases in two-month steps. The January 1 exception can also place a person in the previous birth year for this purpose. SSA’s age calculator is the straightforward way to confirm the applicable age before comparing an early or late start.

What 2026 Social Security figures matter when estimating?

2026 figure What it means
$184,500 taxable maximum SSA’s annual limit on covered earnings counted for the benefit calculation. Earnings above it do not increase the calculation for 2026.
$1,890 per credit, up to four credits in a year SSA’s stated 2026 earnings amount for one Social Security credit. The credit threshold is relevant to eligibility, not a direct measure of the monthly retirement benefit. Requirements vary by benefit type; your SSA account or estimate shows credits earned and any remaining need.
$24,480 annual earnings-test limit For someone below FRA throughout 2026, SSA says $1 in benefits is deducted for each $2 earned above this limit.
$65,160 earnings-test limit In 2026, for earnings before the month a person reaches FRA, SSA says $1 in benefits is deducted for each $3 earned above this limit.

These are 2026 values. They are not safe assumptions for a later year, so check SSA’s current figures when making a future-year estimate or deciding when to claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The credit figure is easy to misread. Credits relate to eligibility for benefits; they do not tell you the size of your monthly retirement check. SSA says the 2026 earnings amount for one credit is $1,890, with up to four credits earned in a year. Eligibility requirements depend on the type of benefit, so use your account or estimate to see your own credit status rather than using a monthly benefit estimate as a substitute.

What if I work while receiving retirement benefits?

If you claim before FRA and keep working, the retirement earnings test may reduce or withhold payments before you reach FRA. For someone below FRA all year in 2026, the limit is $24,480; SSA says $1 is deducted for every $2 earned above it. For someone reaching FRA during 2026, the limit is $65,160 for earnings before the month FRA is reached, with $1 deducted for every $3 above the limit. Beginning with the month you reach FRA, earnings no longer reduce benefits under this test.

The earnings test affects payments while you are below FRA; it is not the same as a permanent reduction in the underlying benefit calculation. SSA recalculates benefits at FRA to credit months in which payments were withheld because of excess earnings. Before using a retirement estimate to plan work and claiming, distinguish the monthly benefit shown for a start age from the payments you may receive in a particular year while still working.

These thresholds apply to earnings in the specified 2026 circumstances, not to every kind of income or every future calendar year. The $24,480 limit applies when you are below FRA throughout the year. The higher $65,160 limit applies in the year you reach FRA and only to earnings before the month you reach it. From that month onward, earnings do not reduce benefits under the retirement earnings test. Check SSA’s current rules for the year you expect to work and claim.

How to make the estimate useful for a real decision

Use consistent assumptions

Compare start ages using the same expected future covered earnings, and note whether the tool is showing today’s dollars or future dollars. If your work plans are uncertain, make separate scenarios, such as one with no additional covered earnings and another with plausible continued earnings. Do not treat an assumption as a promise that you will earn that amount.

When comparing scenarios, change one input at a time where possible. First look at the age comparison under one earnings assumption; then compare how the estimate changes if you add likely future covered earnings. This makes it easier to see whether a difference comes from a different start age or a different work forecast. Keep a note of the assumptions beside each result, especially if you use more than one calculator.

Separate monthly amount from timing

A larger estimated monthly benefit at a later start age is one piece of the choice, not a complete financial recommendation. The SSA calculators support comparisons of benefit amounts and claiming ages; they do not establish a universal best age. Consider your own need for income, plans to work, and household circumstances alongside the estimate.

Revisit the estimate when inputs change

Future earnings assumptions, the decision to continue working, and a corrected earnings record can all change the estimate. Recheck the account-linked result when your plans or record change, and consult SSA for current limits and eligibility details. Do not carry 2026 dollar thresholds into another calendar year without checking for updated figures.

Common estimating mistakes

  • Relying on the Quick Calculator as a personal forecast: it estimates past earnings and does not retrieve your record.
  • Ignoring missing earnings years: fewer than 35 years means zero years enter the calculation, while additional higher-earning years may replace lower ones.
  • Comparing different work assumptions: changing future earnings while changing claiming age makes it harder to see how much of the difference comes from age.
  • Confusing eligibility credits with benefit size: credits help establish eligibility; they do not directly tell you the amount of your monthly retirement benefit.
  • Treating a 2026 limit as permanent: the taxable maximum, credit amount, and earnings-test thresholds are year-specific.
  • Assuming withheld payments under the earnings test are simply lost: SSA recalculates at FRA to credit months when payments were withheld because of excess earnings.
  • Mixing today’s and future dollars: note which presentation a calculator uses before comparing amounts; they express estimates in different dollar terms.
  • Assuming a pension or investment income adds to covered earnings: those are not covered wages for the retirement benefit calculation.
  • Using the wrong full retirement age: confirm the birth-year schedule, including the January 1 rule, before comparing start dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most accurate way to estimate my Social Security retirement benefit?

Start with the Retirement Estimate in your my Social Security account. It uses your SSA earnings record and lets you compare ages 62, your full retirement age, and 70 while adjusting expected future income. Check that the earnings history is accurate before relying on the estimate.

Can I estimate my benefit without a my Social Security account?

Yes. Use SSA’s Online Calculator and enter the covered earnings history from your Social Security Statement. It does not connect to your SSA record, so careful data entry matters. The Quick Calculator is an easier but rougher option because it estimates past earnings rather than retrieving your record.

How many years of earnings does Social Security use?

SSA bases the retirement benefit on the highest 35 years of covered earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years, zero-earning years are included. Later higher-earning years may replace lower years in the calculation.

Does working after I claim reduce Social Security benefits?

If you claim before full retirement age and keep working, the retirement earnings test may reduce or withhold payments before FRA. For 2026, SSA lists a $24,480 limit for people below FRA all year and a $65,160 limit for earnings before the FRA month for people reaching FRA during the year. At FRA, earnings no longer reduce benefits under this test; SSA recalculates benefits to credit months when payments were withheld.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is my full retirement age?

It depends on your birth year. Under SSA’s 2026 schedule, it is 66 for people born from 1943 through 1954, rises in two-month steps for birth years 1955 through 1959, and is 67 for those born in 1960 or later. For someone born on January 1, SSA uses the previous year. Use SSA’s Retirement Age Calculator to confirm your exact FRA.

Are the 2026 maximum benefit examples what I will receive?

No. SSA’s examples of $2,969 at age 62, $4,152 at full retirement age, and $5,181 at age 70 apply to a person who earned the taxable maximum every year beginning at age 22 and started benefits in 2026. They are not universal maximums or individual forecasts.

The Bottom Line

For the most useful estimate, check your earnings record in my Social Security, use realistic future covered-earnings assumptions, and compare ages 62, your exact full retirement age, and 70 on the same assumptions. If you use a manual calculator, enter the Statement history carefully and distinguish today’s dollars from future dollars. Treat SSA’s 2026 limits and examples as year-specific, and consider the earnings test separately if you plan to work after claiming.
