You can make many common WooCommerce page changes without code, but the right editing screen depends on what you are changing. Edit ordinary content pages under Pages → All Pages, use Appearance → Editor to change store templates when your site has a block theme, and assign functional pages under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Page setup. Cart and Checkout may use blocks or legacy shortcodes; My Account still relies on a shortcode in core WooCommerce.
First identify what kind of WooCommerce page you are editing
WooCommerce uses “page” to describe several different things. Some are ordinary WordPress pages; others display product archives or run store functions. Editing the wrong surface can leave the live page unchanged.
| Area | What it does | Usual editing method |
|---|---|---|
| Shop | Product catalog and archive; it may not display the page’s ordinary content. | Shop or Product Catalog template in the Site Editor, or theme/archive settings. |
| Cart | Shows items a customer intends to buy, totals, and related options. | Cart block or legacy [woocommerce_cart] shortcode. |
| Checkout | Collects customer, shipping, payment, and order information. | Checkout block or legacy [woocommerce_checkout] shortcode. |
| My Account | Login, orders, addresses, downloads, and account details. | [woocommerce_my_account] shortcode in core WooCommerce. |
| Product page or category archive | Displays a product or a group of products. | Product or archive template in the Site Editor, or theme/page-builder controls. |
| Terms, privacy, returns, or shipping information | Provides store policies or help content. | Ordinary WordPress page editor. |
WooCommerce normally creates Shop, Cart, Checkout, and My Account pages during setup, but a setup can be incomplete or pages can later be deleted. It also creates a draft Refund and Returns Policy page, which is recommended but not required. See WooCommerce’s page setup documentation.
Check your theme and make a safe copy first
Before changing a live store, make a backup or work on a staging copy. Keep the current page and its working setup until the replacement has passed a purchase test.

Look under Appearance → Editor. If that option is available, your site may use a block theme, which provides the full Site Editor for templates, headers, footers, and WooCommerce layouts. A classic theme can still use blocks inside ordinary pages, but does not provide the same full template-editing experience. Menu names vary somewhat by WordPress, WooCommerce, and theme version. WooCommerce explains the distinction in its Site Editor guidance and blocks documentation.
Also check whether your Cart and Checkout are built with blocks or shortcodes. Stores created with WooCommerce 8.3 or later, released in November 2023, use Cart and Checkout blocks by default; an older or customized store may still use shortcodes. WooCommerce recommends blocks, but notes that some extensions may be more compatible with the shortcode versions. Details are in the WooCommerce page shortcodes documentation.
Edit ordinary WordPress pages
For a policy, contact page, shipping information page, or custom landing page, use the standard page editor:
- Go to Pages → All Pages and select Edit beside the page.
- Add, remove, or rearrange blocks. Common choices include Heading, Paragraph, Image, Cover, Group, Columns, and Buttons. Product Collection or other WooCommerce blocks can add products where appropriate.
- Select a block to adjust the settings available for it, such as alignment, spacing, colors, and typography.
- Preview the page at desktop and mobile widths, then select Update or Publish.
WooCommerce does not need to control an ordinary page unless you assign it a store function, such as Cart, Checkout, or My Account.

Edit the Shop page and product layouts
The Shop page is the product catalog destination, not necessarily a normal page whose editor content controls the visible layout. WooCommerce also uses it for certain links, including “Continue Shopping.” If editing the page under Pages does not change the product grid, the visible content is likely controlled by an archive template or the theme. See WooCommerce’s explanation of its pages.
With a block theme
- Go to Appearance → Editor.
- Open Templates or the WooCommerce template area and look for Product Catalog, Shop, or the relevant product archive template. The exact label depends on the theme and interface.
- Use List View to inspect the template structure, then select blocks to adjust them or add and rearrange content.
- Change available product-grid, category, filter, typography, color, spacing, or button settings, then save.
With a classic theme
Look for shop or archive controls in the theme’s settings or Customizer, or use a compatible page-builder template feature. Text entered in the ordinary Shop page editor may not appear above the catalog. WooCommerce’s store editing overview and block guide describe where blocks and templates can be used.
Edit the Cart page
For a block-based store, Cart can be edited as a WooCommerce page or template. Depending on the theme and interface, open Appearance → Editor, find the Cart area, and select its edit control. Use List View to find nested Cart blocks, select a block to adjust its settings, and add compatible supporting content such as shipping information or a product recommendation. The Cart block handles cart contents, totals, shipping information, and related options. Its filled-cart and empty-cart states are separate, so inspect both. See the Cart and Checkout customization guide and Cart block documentation.
With a classic theme, open the assigned Cart page under Pages → All Pages and edit its Cart block or shortcode. Keep the functional Cart block or shortcode in place. You can add suitable content around it, but the page must also be assigned as Cart in WooCommerce settings.

Design the empty-cart state separately
When the cart has no items, a customer needs a clear next step. Depending on the Cart block’s available controls, consider a concise empty-cart message, a Continue Shopping button, links to popular categories, or useful shipping and returns information. A filled cart can look correct while the empty state remains unhelpful.
Edit Checkout carefully
Checkout is transactional: a layout change must not interfere with address validation, shipping, taxes, payment, or order submission. On a block setup, open the Checkout page or template in the Site Editor, select the Checkout block or one of its sections, and adjust the controls available in that version. On a classic theme, edit the assigned Checkout page under Pages → All Pages, preserving its Checkout block or shortcode. WooCommerce describes the block’s sections and editing options in its Cart and Checkout guide.
Common visual changes include layout, spacing, colors, typography, and supporting trust or store information. Available controls for labels, section visibility, and address fields depend on WooCommerce version and extensions. Conditional fields, custom validation, complex rules tied to cart contents or customer location, and some gateway changes may need an extension or development work. Confirm that every checkout-related extension supports your chosen block or shortcode flow; do not assume a visual edit resolves a missing payment method.
Edit My Account without removing its shortcode
Core WooCommerce still uses [woocommerce_my_account] for the full My Account area; its documentation does not describe a block-based replacement for that area. On the assigned page, leave the shortcode in place. In the block editor, it belongs in a Shortcode block. You can add ordinary content before or after it, then update the page.

The page can show login or registration forms, dashboard content, orders, downloads, addresses, account details, and logout controls according to the customer’s state and store settings. Test the page both while logged in and logged out. Custom tabs, endpoints, or dashboard panels go beyond basic styling and generally require a compatible extension or other custom work. WooCommerce documents the shortcode at Page shortcodes; its My Account Page Editor documentation describes one extension for deeper account customization.
Assign or restore missing WooCommerce pages
A page titled “Cart” is not automatically the page WooCommerce uses. Assign the correct pages under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Page setup, then save. Choose the intended Cart, Checkout, My Account, and Terms and Conditions pages; set the Shop page where that option is available. Cart, Checkout, and My Account should be separate pages. WooCommerce 3.7 and later prevents assigning one page to multiple functions because it can cause incorrect redirects and gateway behavior. See WooCommerce page setup.
Use WooCommerce’s page creation tool
- Go to WooCommerce → Status → Tools.
- Find the page creation tool and select Create pages to generate missing defaults.
- Review the new pages and assign them under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Page setup.
Create a page manually if needed
- Go to Pages → Add New and give the page a clear title.
- Add the appropriate Cart or Checkout block, if available, or add a Shortcode block with the relevant shortcode. The My Account page uses its shortcode.
- Publish the page, then assign it in WooCommerce’s Page setup settings.
WooCommerce’s documented page shortcodes include [woocommerce_cart], [woocommerce_checkout], [woocommerce_my_account], and the optional [woocommerce_order_tracking]. Use the relevant shortcode on the corresponding page; do not put multiple store functions on one page. See WooCommerce page shortcodes.
Choose blocks or shortcodes based on compatibility
| Choose | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Blocks | A new store, visual Cart or Checkout edits, and a compatible block theme or page setup. | Confirm the payment, shipping, subscription, booking, membership, and checkout-field extensions you use support the block flow. |
| Shortcodes | My Account, a store dependent on classic checkout compatibility, or a tested rollback from blocks. | Preserve the shortcode on the assigned page and test the complete customer flow after switching. |
WooCommerce recommends Cart and Checkout blocks but recognizes that some extensions may work better with shortcodes. Choose based on the features and extensions your store actually needs, not on the assumption that one format works best in every setup. See WooCommerce’s shortcode guidance.

Revert Cart and Checkout to the classic shortcode flow
On a block theme, open Appearance → Editor, open the Cart or Checkout page/template, and use List View to select the relevant block. In the block toolbar, select Transform → Classic Shortcode, then save. If reverting the store to classic checkout, revert Cart and Checkout as a pair, and test both. On a classic theme, edit the assigned page under Pages → All Pages. Interface labels can differ slightly by version.
Troubleshoot changes that do not work
“I edited the page, but nothing changed”
- Confirm you edited the page WooCommerce actually assigns.
- For Shop, check whether a product archive template, theme setting, or page-builder template controls the display.
- Clear relevant page, browser, or CDN caches if the saved change is not appearing, then check in a private browser window.
“Cart or Checkout is blank”
- Check that the assigned page contains the correct Cart or Checkout block or shortcode.
- Confirm Cart and Checkout are assigned to separate pages.
- Check whether a plugin or theme is interfering with the page content or block rendering.
- If needed, recreate the page and assign it again. WooCommerce’s page troubleshooting guide covers pages that do not display.
“No payment methods are available”
Check gateway setup, supported country and currency, shipping-zone requirements, test-mode or account-connection status, and any Checkout Block compatibility requirements. This is a payment and configuration issue, not necessarily a page-design problem. WooCommerce lists payment availability among Cart and Checkout troubleshooting concerns in its customization guide.
“My Account tabs or endpoints are missing”
Confirm the assigned page still contains [woocommerce_my_account], test the relevant logged-in state, and check whether an extension has altered account endpoints. If endpoint URLs behave incorrectly, refresh permalink settings under Settings → Permalinks and test again. WooCommerce’s troubleshooting documentation explains that account endpoints extend the main account URL rather than requiring a separate page for each section.
“I cannot find Appearance → Editor”
Your site may use a classic theme. You can still edit ordinary pages with blocks, but full Site Editor template controls require a block theme. See WooCommerce’s blocks and theme guidance.
Test the store after editing
Previewing is not enough for a functional store page. Test the customer actions affected by your change, preferably on staging or with gateway test mode where available.
Shop and Cart
- Open the catalog and verify products, images, prices, categories, filters, and pagination or load-more behavior.
- Add a simple product and a variable product; change quantities and remove items.
- Apply and remove a coupon, check shipping calculation, and test the empty-cart state and Continue Shopping link.
Checkout
- Test guest and logged-in checkout, valid and invalid customer details, each shipping method, and each payment gateway.
- Where relevant, check taxes, order confirmation, and confirmation email.
- Repeat the key steps at a mobile width.
My Account and page setup
- Test login, registration if enabled, password reset, orders, address editing, account details, and logout.
- Confirm Cart, Checkout, and My Account are assigned to separate published pages and that no required page is private or still a draft.
If a visual block fails to render, check the browser console for an error; if a conflict is suspected, test on staging with nonessential plugins disabled rather than experimenting on a live checkout.
