The change comes as Apple’s promised Siri improvements remain a prominent test of its AI ambitions, but Apple did not say Siri’s delays caused Giannandrea’s departure.
What Apple announced
Apple said Giannandrea would step down as senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, serve as an adviser, and retire in 2026. The company named Subramanya vice president of AI. Apple’s announcement described a transition and reorganization, not a firing. This was not a one-for-one handoff of every responsibility. Subramanya takes charge of Apple Foundation Models, machine-learning research, and AI safety and evaluation. Who is Amar Subramanya?
Subramanya joined Apple from Microsoft, where he was corporate vice president of AI. Before Microsoft, he spent 16 years at Google in senior AI and engineering roles, including work associated with the Gemini assistant. Calling him only a former Google executive leaves out his most recent job; a more complete description is a former Microsoft AI executive with a long Google background. Reuters via Investing.com

His assigned remit combines the underlying models with research and evaluation of AI safety. That experience is relevant to Apple’s efforts to make Siri more capable, but his résumé is not evidence that Apple’s products will improve on a particular schedule or match competitors.
Why Siri is at the center of the story
Apple presented Apple Intelligence as a way to make Siri more context-aware and able to carry out actions across apps. The company later delayed major Siri improvements until 2026. That delay made the leadership change especially consequential: Siri is the visible interface through which many customers will judge whether Apple’s AI work has become useful, reliable software.

The challenge is broader than a voice assistant. Siri joins model quality to operating-system integration, privacy, device capabilities, and services. A stronger foundation model would not, by itself, guarantee dependable multi-step actions or a polished user experience. Was Giannandrea replaced because Siri was delayed?
That has not been established. Apple’s announcement did not say the Siri delay caused Giannandrea to step down; it framed the transition around an advisory role and planned retirement. Reuters reported claims that CEO Tim Cook had lost confidence in Giannandrea’s product-development execution, but that is attributed reporting, not a reason Apple publicly confirmed.

The timing makes an accountability interpretation understandable, especially after the Siri delay, but it does not prove that Giannandrea was fired or that Subramanya was hired specifically to fix Siri. The confirmed facts are the leadership change, the new reporting line, and the redistribution of responsibilities.
What the reporting-line change signals
Subramanya reports to Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, rather than leading the same broad AI organization under Giannandrea. Read alongside the transfer of other functions to Khan and Cue, the structure suggests Apple is bringing core model and research work closer to software and product delivery while distributing adjacent responsibilities across other executives. Apple has not described this as ending an AI “silo”; that is an interpretation of the reporting lines.

For Apple, the potential benefit is tighter coordination between AI research and the software features customers use. The trade-off is that distributing a former executive’s organization across leaders can make ownership and collaboration more complex. Whether the structure helps depends on execution, not the org chart alone.

The appointment is a strategic bet, not proof of an AI turnaround. Useful signs of progress would be shipped features and measurable improvements in real use, rather than announcements alone. In particular, watch for:

- Apple Intelligence features arriving with predictable timing and clear capabilities.
- Foundation models that perform well in quality, speed, and cost for Apple’s intended uses.
- Clear coordination between model research, software engineering, operations, and services.
- Independent testing that demonstrates practical gains for users.
There are meaningful ways the plan could fall short. The new leader may inherit the same technical and organizational constraints; moving teams across executives may complicate coordination; and improvements in models may not close the gap between Siri’s promises and what it can reliably do. Apple’s privacy and on-device goals may also constrain the balance among capability, latency, and processing choices. Rushing releases to meet expectations could create reliability problems, while a reorganization may unsettle staff.
As of August 18, 2026, the cited announcement and reporting establish the December 2025 appointment and planned retirement transition, but do not independently establish whether Giannandrea has formally retired, whether Subramanya remains in the role, or whether the delayed Siri features shipped successfully. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the appointment itself.
