You do not have to sell every share at once—but the right pace depends on how much risk you can accept and the tax and transaction costs of selling.
This is general education, not individualized investment or tax advice. There is no universal Microsoft position-size threshold or allocation that suits every investor.
Why a large Microsoft position can increase portfolio risk
A portfolio heavily dependent on one company is exposed to company-specific risk: an adverse change affecting that business can have an outsized effect on your investments. The SEC explains that inadequate diversification increases portfolio risk exposure. Diversification means spreading money among different investments to reduce risk; it does not eliminate losses or guarantee that a portfolio will rise. SEC: Asset Allocation and Diversification; SEC: Investor Bulletin.
Measure your Microsoft exposure before changing it
Start by estimating Microsoft’s share of your investable assets, then look for indirect exposure. A fund may own Microsoft among its largest holdings, and owning several funds does not necessarily mean you are broadly diversified if they hold many of the same companies or concentrate in similar sectors.

#1 Best Overall
- List your Microsoft shares and their value relative to your investable portfolio.
- Check the largest holdings and sector exposure of each fund you own, using the fund’s current published information.
- Include other relevant exposure, such as employer stock or compensation tied to the company, when assessing your overall financial dependence on Microsoft.
There is no single percentage that establishes when a Microsoft position is too large. The answer depends on your full financial picture and ability to withstand losses.
Choose a diversified destination that fits your situation
Decide what broad mix of investments you want before selecting trades. Diversification can mean holding a wider range of companies and sectors within stocks, and may also include other asset categories such as bonds and cash. The appropriate mix depends on your time horizon and risk tolerance; the SEC’s examples are educational, not personal recommendations. SEC: Asset Allocation and Diversification.

A broad mutual fund or ETF can make it easier to own many investments, but a fund’s label alone does not establish that it diversifies your portfolio. Review its underlying holdings and sector exposure alongside what you already own. Several funds with overlapping top holdings may leave you with substantial exposure to the same companies.
Ways to reduce concentration without selling everything at once
The SEC describes rebalancing as bringing a portfolio back toward its intended allocation. You can do that by selling overweight assets, investing new money in underweight assets, or directing ongoing contributions toward underweight categories. SEC: Rebalance Your Investments.

| Approach | How it works | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Sell some Microsoft shares | Use proceeds to buy investments that bring the portfolio closer to your chosen mix. | Can change your exposure more quickly, but a sale may have tax consequences and transaction costs. |
| Invest new money | Put new contributions toward underweight investments rather than adding to Microsoft. | May reduce concentration gradually; it may not do so quickly enough for your needs. |
| Redirect ongoing contributions | Change where recurring contributions go so they favor underweight assets. | Progress depends on the size and frequency of contributions and the movement of your holdings. |
These methods can be combined. The relevant comparison is how much each changes your actual company and sector exposure, how quickly it does so, and what it costs—not whether you still own Microsoft afterward.
Check tax lots and costs before a sale
Selling appreciated shares can have tax consequences, but the result depends on your circumstances. Before placing an order, review the shares’ purchase dates and cost basis, the account holding them, transaction charges, and applicable tax rules. The SEC advises investors to consider fees and tax consequences when rebalancing. SEC: Rebalance Your Investments.

If the tax impact is unclear, discuss your specific lots and circumstances with a qualified tax professional before selling. Do not assume that all Microsoft shareholders will owe the same amount—or that a particular sale will be tax-free.

If you already intend to make a charitable gift, donating appreciated publicly traded shares may be an option to discuss with the charity and a tax professional. IRS Publication 526 (2025) explains rules for charitable contributions of property, including qualified appreciated stock; eligibility and limits depend on the property and the donor’s circumstances. A donation is not a universal way to avoid capital-gains tax or guarantee a deduction equal to market value. IRS Publication 526.

A practical sequence for making the change
- Inventory exposure: Calculate Microsoft’s share of your investable assets and check for overlapping fund holdings and related employer exposure.
- Set your intended mix: Choose a broad allocation consistent with your time horizon and risk tolerance before deciding which investments to trade.
- Compare routes: Decide whether to sell some shares, use new money, redirect contributions, or combine approaches based on the pace of change you need.
- Review consequences: Check tax lots, account type, applicable rules, and transaction costs before making a sale; consult qualified tax or financial professionals when needed.
- Recheck holdings: Review the portfolio’s actual holdings and allocation periodically so that multiple funds do not quietly recreate the same concentration.
Avoid treating complex strategies involving borrowing or derivatives as simple substitutes for diversification. Their suitability and risks depend on individual circumstances; the general SEC guidance cited here does not establish them as appropriate solutions for a concentrated Microsoft position.
