Compare Microsoft with large-cap tech peers by starting with what each business earns, then examining growth, profitability, cash generation, investment needs and risk. Only after that should you compare valuation—and any multiple needs a common share-price date and a clearly stated earnings or cash-flow basis. A lower P/E or share price alone does not show that a stock is cheaper.
Start with the businesses, not the tickers
Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms and NVIDIA are all large technology companies, but they do not earn money in the same way. A useful peer group is a set of comparison lenses, not a claim that the businesses are interchangeable.
- Microsoft: assess its reported segments and the contribution of software, cloud and other activities using its latest annual filing.
- Alphabet (GOOGL/GOOG) and Meta (META): advertising-led platforms, with cloud or other business lines that affect their overall economics.
- Amazon (AMZN): commerce and cloud businesses with different drivers and margin profiles.
- Apple (AAPL): devices and services.
- NVIDIA (NVDA): semiconductors and accelerated-computing supply.
For each company, identify revenue and operating income by segment where reported. Revenue shows scale; segment operating income helps reveal which activities contribute profit. A fast-growing segment is not necessarily the main source of earnings, and the same label—such as cloud—does not guarantee comparable economics.
Use filings and align the reporting periods
Company filings are the foundation for reported results, segment definitions, capital needs, risks and management discussion. Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K is dated June 30, 2026, and its filing record says it was filed July 29, 2026. Microsoft’s fiscal year ends June 30; Alphabet’s ends December 31. Do not treat the companies’ fiscal-year labels as identical periods. Check each peer’s latest filing and state the reporting period beside every figure.

Alphabet’s FY2025 filing illustrates why segment detail matters: Alphabet Inc. reported $402.836 billion in total revenue for 2025, including $342.721 billion from Google Services and $58.705 billion from Google Cloud. Google Cloud generated $13.910 billion in operating income that year. Its revenue and operating income are distinct measures; comparing cloud sales growth without profitability or investment needs omits important context.
Compare growth over equivalent periods and, where disclosed, distinguish organic growth from growth driven by acquisitions, currency movements or other factors. Look at revenue, operating income and cash flow—not just one quarter or one business line. A full-year comparison can help reduce noise, but differing fiscal calendars still need to be made explicit.

Compare profitability, cash flow and investment together
Operating margins show how much revenue remains after operating expenses; segment margins can help identify differences hidden by company-wide averages. Gross margin may also be useful, but business mix matters: a hardware maker, advertising platform and cloud provider can have structurally different margin profiles.
Then examine operating cash flow, capital expenditures and free cash flow. Use the same free-cash-flow definition for every company—commonly operating cash flow minus capital expenditures—and disclose it. Heavy infrastructure spending can cause accounting earnings and cash available to shareholders to diverge.

Capital expenditure is especially relevant when companies are expanding cloud or AI infrastructure. Alphabet Inc. reported capital expenditures of $91.4 billion for calendar year 2025, compared with $52.5 billion in 2024, and operating cash flow of $164.7 billion in 2025. Alphabet said it expected technical-infrastructure investment to rise significantly in 2026; that is management outlook, not a realized result. To assess whether higher spending is productive, compare the investment burden with growth, depreciation, capacity additions and evidence of demand or utilization.
Check balance-sheet exposure, risks and per-share returns
Similar market capitalizations do not imply similar financial exposure. Compare cash, debt and lease obligations, then consider company-specific risks such as litigation and regulation, customer concentration, supply constraints and dependence on particular products or markets. Their relevance varies by business, so avoid treating a single risk checklist as a prediction of equal impact.

Shareholder returns also need a per-share view. Compare dividends and repurchases alongside stock-based compensation and changes in diluted shares outstanding. Gross buyback spending alone does not show whether each remaining share represents a larger ownership stake. Microsoft’s FY2026 filing search record reports repurchases of 36 million shares for $16.7 billion in FY2026, versus 31 million shares for $13.0 billion in FY2025. Those are company-reported fiscal-year figures, not a signal about Microsoft’s current valuation.

- Price-to-earnings (P/E): share price divided by earnings per share. Label it trailing when based on reported earnings or forward when based on estimates; state whether earnings are adjusted.
- Enterprise value to operating income or EBITDA: useful for comparing businesses with different financing structures, provided enterprise value and the earnings measure are defined consistently.
- Price-to-sales: a revenue-based measure that does not account for differences in profitability.
- Free-cash-flow yield: free cash flow relative to market value, meaningful only when the cash-flow definition and measurement period match.
For a defensible comparison, use one market-price date for every company, identify share classes where relevant, and pair that date with a stated reporting period or forecast horizon. Do not mix one company’s trailing reported earnings with another’s forward estimates without making the difference explicit. Share price by itself is not a valuation measure because share counts differ.
The available company figures here do not establish a synchronized current set of peer prices or valuation multiples. Without a common price date and aligned trailing or forward inputs, a current ranking of Microsoft as cheaper or more expensive than its peers is not supported. Even with aligned multiples, valuation is a separate question from business quality: a strong company can be expensive at a particular price, and a lower multiple alone does not establish value.
Quick Recap
A repeatable comparison checklist
- Choose a peer set and briefly state how each company’s business differs from Microsoft’s.
- Pull each company’s latest annual filing and record the fiscal period and segment definitions.
- Compare segment revenue and operating income, then full-company growth and margins over aligned periods.
- Compare operating cash flow, capital expenditure and consistently defined free cash flow; assess investment needs against growth and capacity utilization.
- Review cash, debt, leases and company-specific risks.
- Compare dividends, repurchases, stock-based compensation and share-count changes to assess shareholder returns per share.
- Only then calculate valuation measures using one price date, consistent periods and clearly labeled trailing or forward inputs.
