The practical way to diversify a portfolio concentrated in Chinese technology stocks is to map your real exposure first, then spread risk across issuers, sectors, regions and asset classes without assuming that several funds are automatically different. Review direct shares, depositary receipts and the underlying holdings of every fund. Decide whether your priority is reducing China exposure, technology exposure, single-company risk or equity risk. Then choose broad investments and a rebalancing process that fit your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, tax position and account rules. There is no sound universal percentage or single security that applies to every investor.
Start with the exposure you actually own
Concentration is measured by economic exposure, not just by the number of line items on a statement. A portfolio can show ten securities and still depend heavily on the same Chinese technology companies, suppliers, industry or legal structure. Conversely, one broad fund may contain hundreds of issuers and reduce single-company risk more effectively than several narrow products.

Begin with an inventory covering each account, including workplace plans, taxable accounts, retirement accounts and any securities held through a foreign intermediary. Classify each position before deciding what to sell or buy.
| Position type | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Direct shares | Issuer, listing venue, country of incorporation, principal operations and portfolio weight | A company listed outside mainland China can still create substantial China or China-technology exposure through its business. |
| Depositary receipts | Underlying issuer, conversion ratio, listing venue and economic exposure | A depositary receipt is a wrapper around an overseas company; changing the trading venue does not by itself remove country or sector risk. |
| Exchange-traded or mutual funds | Mandate, geographic scope, sector scope, top holdings, total expenses and trading method | A country or technology fund may remain highly concentrated, and funds can overlap with one another or with your individual shares. |
| Cash, bonds and other assets | Asset class, currency, maturity, credit exposure and liquidity | Diversification among asset classes can change the portfolio’s behavior during an equity sell-off. |
For each fund, read the current prospectus, holdings file and shareholder report rather than relying on its name. The SEC explains that diversification depends on spreading money among different investments and that owning several funds does not guarantee diversification when their holdings overlap. Its asset-allocation and diversification guidance is a useful starting point.

Look through pooled funds
List the largest holdings of every fund and match them against your direct positions and other funds. A simple overlap review can answer two questions:
- How much of the portfolio is ultimately exposed to the same issuer?
- How much is exposed to the same country, technology industry or business model even when the issuer names differ?
If a fund publishes weights, you can estimate an issuer’s combined exposure by adding the holding’s weight in each fund to any direct position, adjusted for the percentage of your total portfolio invested in each fund. The arithmetic is only an estimate when holdings are delayed, derivatives are used or a fund’s look-through data is incomplete. Record the date of each holdings file so that an old list is not mistaken for a current one.
Decide what kind of concentration you need to reduce
“Chinese technology stocks” combines at least three risks: dependence on a particular country, dependence on a technology sector and dependence on equity markets. A useful diversification plan names the risk it is trying to change.
| If your main concern is… | Potential diversification direction | What it does not solve automatically |
|---|---|---|
| One or a few issuers | A broad fund or a wider set of companies with limited overlap | Country, sector, currency or equity-market risk may remain. |
| Chinese companies generally | Exposure to companies headquartered and operating in other countries, after checking their revenue and supply-chain links | Foreign markets have their own political, currency, legal and liquidity risks. |
| Technology as a sector | Funds or securities covering multiple industries rather than a technology-only mandate | A broad equity portfolio can still fall sharply in a global market decline. |
| Equity risk | Bonds, cash or other asset classes appropriate to your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses | Lower expected volatility can come with lower growth potential, inflation risk or credit risk. |
| One currency | Assets denominated in other currencies, if that fits your liabilities and risk capacity | Currency movements can increase or reduce returns and add a separate source of volatility. |
Do not treat “non-China” as a synonym for “low risk.” A narrow foreign technology fund can reproduce the same sector concentration, while a broad international fund can add currency, information, market, political, cost and legal risks.
Routes for broadening a concentrated portfolio
Use broad, multi-sector equity exposure
A broad domestic, international or global equity fund can spread exposure across many issuers and industries. Check the mandate: “international” may exclude your home market, include or exclude emerging markets, or carry a substantial allocation to one region. A fund described as global can still have a large technology weight or repeat companies you already own.
Compare the fund’s stated universe, country limits, sector limits, rebalancing rules, top holdings and expenses. Prefer a breadth that addresses your identified problem rather than a product that merely adds another ticker.

Add sectors outside technology deliberately
Exposure to industries such as health care, consumer staples, financial services, industrials, utilities or energy may behave differently from technology, but the difference is not guaranteed. Examine the companies’ geographic revenues and major suppliers: a non-technology company can still be economically tied to China, and a “global” sector fund can still be dominated by a few large issuers.
Consider other asset classes
Bonds, cash and other permitted asset categories can reduce reliance on stock prices, but their role depends on your spending needs, investment horizon, inflation concerns, credit tolerance and tax circumstances. A short-term goal generally cannot absorb the same equity drawdown as a retirement goal decades away. The SEC’s investor guidance emphasizes that an appropriate asset allocation is personal rather than a fixed rule.
Use pooled funds, but inspect the mechanics
Pooled vehicles can provide many holdings in one transaction, yet their scope may be narrow. Compare:
| Feature | Questions to ask | Reason for checking |
|---|---|---|
| Breadth | Is it broad-market, regional, country-specific, sector-specific or thematic? | Labels do not reveal how much concentration remains. |
| Holdings | What are the largest positions, and do they duplicate your portfolio? | Overlap can recreate single-issuer or technology risk. |
| Costs | What are the ongoing expenses and transaction costs? | Costs reduce returns and can differ materially among otherwise similar funds. |
| Trading method | Does it trade throughout the day or transact at a calculated end-of-day value? | ETFs generally trade intraday at fluctuating market prices; mutual funds generally transact at their net asset value under their fund rules. The SEC discusses these distinctions in its international-investing guidance. |
| Liquidity and access | Can you buy or sell it in your account, and are there restrictions or foreign-market settlement issues? | Execution and access can be different across markets and intermediaries. |
Account for the risks of international diversification
International exposure can reduce dependence on one market, but it introduces risks that should be evaluated rather than hidden in a label. The SEC identifies several relevant categories:
- Currency movements: Returns can change when the foreign currency moves against the currency in which you measure your wealth. Some funds hedge currency and some do not; read the mandate instead of assuming.
- Market and political conditions: Economic policy, elections, social events, capital controls and trading rules can produce larger or faster price changes than you expect.
- Information differences: Accounting standards, disclosure schedules, language and access to company management may differ, making comparison and monitoring harder.
- Liquidity: A security may trade less frequently, with wider execution differences or limited ability to exit during stress.
- Costs: Fund expenses, foreign taxes, conversion charges, custody fees and trading costs can reduce the benefit of diversification.
- Legal remedies: Investor rights, courts, shareholder procedures and enforcement may differ from those in your home market.
- Intermediary protection: A foreign broker may not provide the same investor protections as a broker registered in the United States. U.S. investors should verify the intermediary’s registration and understand which entity holds the account.
These risks apply to international funds as well as individual securities. Read the fund prospectus and the issuer’s filings for the countries and structures involved; do not infer protections from a familiar-looking listing venue.
Understand the SEC’s warning about VIE structures
Some U.S.-listed companies with China-based businesses use a variable interest entity (VIE) arrangement. In the structure described by the SEC, the U.S.-listed issuer may own a subsidiary that enters contracts with a China-based operating entity rather than directly owning that operating company.

The SEC’s September 20, 2021 Investor Bulletin on U.S.-listed companies operating Chinese businesses through a VIE structure warns that contractual nonperformance or changes in Chinese law or practice could affect enforceability. If the arrangements do not work as intended, the listed company could lose control of the China-based business and investors could suffer significant economic losses.
This is a structural warning about securities that use VIE arrangements, not a statement that every Chinese company or every China-related security has a VIE. For each affected issuer, read the risk factors, description of the corporate structure and material filings. Treat the contractual nature of the exposure as a separate risk from ordinary share-price volatility when deciding how much concentration you can tolerate.
A step-by-step diversification process
- Gather complete statements. Include every account and record the market value, quantity, currency, account type and cost basis where available. Note whether each position is a share, depositary receipt, ETF, mutual fund, bond or cash balance.
- Classify economic exposure. For each issuer and fund, record country, major operating markets, sector and whether a VIE or other contractual structure is disclosed. Use the latest holdings and filings available on the date of your review.
- Measure overlap. Add direct holdings to look-through fund exposures. Flag repeated issuers, repeated sectors and repeated countries. Separate a true reduction in exposure from a change in listing venue.
- Write a personal policy. Define the risks you want to limit, the losses you can tolerate, the time horizon for each goal, the liquidity you need and the circumstances that would trigger a review. Do not copy a generic target percentage.
- Screen alternatives. Compare broadness, holdings, overlap, expenses, trading method, currency policy, liquidity, tax treatment and legal structure. Reject a fund if its mandate does not address the concentration you identified.
- Choose an implementation pace. You may rebalance in one transaction or in stages, subject to your tax, cost and risk constraints. A staged approach can reduce the consequence of choosing one trading day, but it does not guarantee a better return.
- Document the trades and rationale. Keep the prospectus, holdings date, account statement, execution price and reason for each change. This makes later monitoring possible and helps a tax professional review the consequences.
- Set a review schedule. Recheck allocations after material fund changes, corporate events, large deposits or withdrawals and at a regular interval appropriate to your situation. Rebalance because your policy says to, not because a headline predicts the next market move.
Why market timing is a poor substitute for diversification
Moving out of Chinese technology stocks only after a fall, or waiting for a preferred entry price, is a market-timing decision rather than a diversification framework. The SEC’s October 5, 2026 World Investor Week 2026 bulletin says periodic investing can help mitigate volatility and cautions that short-term trading or trying to time markets might reduce returns.

It does not remove valuation, currency, political, liquidity or company risks. If you are selling an appreciated position, the timing and tax impact still require an individualized decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tax and account considerations require personal facts
The consequences of reducing a concentrated position depend on facts that a general article cannot determine: purchase lots and basis, holding period, account type, residence, local tax rules, loss carryforwards, dividend treatment, foreign withholding, currency conversion and the replacement investment. Selling inside one account may have different consequences from selling in another, and a fund distribution can create tax even when you did not sell its shares.
Do not choose a diversification order solely to minimize a headline tax rate or solely to avoid realizing a gain. List the tax questions separately from the investment questions and obtain advice from a qualified tax professional when the amount or complexity warrants it. U.S. investors considering individualized allocation or portfolio advice can use the SEC’s Investor.gov guidance to understand why checking an adviser’s registration and services matters.

Common mistakes and the correction for each
“I own five funds, so I am diversified.”
Problem: The funds may hold the same large companies or all target technology and China. Correction: Build a look-through overlap list and judge the combined exposure.

“The fund name says global, so China risk is gone.”
Problem: A global mandate can still have meaningful China, emerging-market or technology weights. Correction: Read the current country, sector and top-holding data.
“A different listing eliminates the underlying risk.”
Problem: A depositary receipt or an overseas listing can represent the same operating business. Correction: Classify the issuer’s economic operations and legal structure.
“A non-technology fund is automatically independent of China.”
Problem: Companies in another sector may depend on Chinese demand, production or suppliers. Correction: Review geographic revenue and material risk disclosures.
“International means safer.”
Problem: International assets add currency, information, political, liquidity, cost and legal risks. Correction: Decide whether the additional risks fit your objective and capacity for loss.

“I can solve concentration with a quick trade.”
Problem: A rushed sale can create tax costs, execution risk and a new concentration elsewhere. Correction: Follow a written process and consider staged investing without trying to predict the next price move.

Decision paths for different objectives
If you want to reduce China exposure specifically
Prioritize a fund or set of holdings with a clearly stated geographic scope, then verify the actual country weights and the operating exposure of its largest companies. Avoid replacing a China technology fund with a similarly narrow technology fund dominated by another single region.
If you want to reduce technology exposure specifically
Use a multi-sector approach and compare sector weights across every holding. A broad fund may still carry a large technology allocation, so inspect the current data rather than relying on “broad market” as a guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want to reduce the chance of a large equity loss
Evaluate the role of bonds, cash and other asset classes in light of when the money is needed. The decision is about the whole asset allocation, not only which stock fund replaces the concentrated position.
If taxes or liquidity make immediate selling difficult
Map the highest-risk exposures first, identify available contributions or withdrawals that can change weights without a sale, and ask a tax or investment professional to model the alternatives. Do not assume that a tax-efficient action is automatically suitable for your risk level.
How to monitor the result
After implementation, maintain a short dashboard with total portfolio weights by issuer, country, sector and asset class; fund expense information; currency exposure; and any disclosed VIE or other contractual risks. Update it when a fund changes its mandate, a major holding changes materially, your accounts change or your life circumstances change.
Set review triggers in advance, such as a material change in a fund’s mandate, a merger, a change in your time horizon, a large cash need or a concentration created by market movements. A review is not a command to trade. It is a check that the portfolio still matches the policy you wrote.
Bottom line
Diversifying a portfolio concentrated in Chinese technology stocks starts with look-through analysis, not with buying another fund. Identify whether the unwanted risk is issuer, China, technology, currency or equities generally; compare broadness, overlap, costs and fund mechanics; understand international and VIE-specific risks; and account for your own horizon, taxes and ability to tolerate losses. Use a documented, periodic rebalancing process instead of a prediction about the next market move. Because the correct allocation is personal, an appropriately registered professional can help when the tax, legal or structural issues exceed what you can evaluate yourself.
