How to Dispute an Error on Someone’s Credit Report

To dispute an error on someone else’s credit report, get their written authorization, identify the bureau reporting it, and submit a specific dispute to that bureau and the information provider.

If you mean “How do I file on someone’s credit report?”, you generally need to dispute inaccurate or identity-theft-related information in that person’s U.S. credit file—not report someone’s behavior to a bureau. The affected consumer should file with every credit reporting company showing the entry and with the business that supplied it. If you are helping someone else, get their explicit written authorization and follow the requirements of each organization you contact.

Can I dispute something on someone else’s credit report?

Yes, but do not assume that being a relative, having verbal permission, or holding a power of attorney automatically meets every company’s rules. Ask the affected person to authorize you in writing and check the specific bureau or company’s process before submitting anything. For a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), companies generally require signed written authorization provided directly by their customer; the portal handles complaints submitted by a consumer or authorized representative (CFPB complaint portal). The sources do not establish one authorization form accepted by all three nationwide bureaus.

A dispute is a request to investigate inaccurate or incomplete information in the affected person’s file. It is not a general way to report another person. The CFPB says consumers have the right to dispute credit-report errors (CFPB dispute guidance).

How do I correct an ordinary error?

  1. Check the affected person’s report. Obtain it through a legitimate route and identify the exact entry, the company that supplied it, the account identifier, and the bureau or bureaus reporting it. An item may appear at one bureau but not the others.
  2. Dispute with each bureau showing the error and with the furnisher. The furnisher is the business that provided the information, such as a bank, landlord, or credit card issuer. The CFPB recommends disputing first with the credit reporting company or companies and then with the furnisher; the FTC also explains that both the bureau and the business supplying the information must correct information found to be wrong or incomplete (FTC dispute guidance).
  3. Make a specific request and provide evidence. Explain exactly what is wrong and why, and say whether you want the entry corrected or removed. Include the affected person’s contact details, the report confirmation or file number if available, and the account number or other identifier shown on the report. Mark a copy of the report section containing the error and attach copies—not originals—of relevant documents.
  4. Submit through the channel you choose and keep records. The CFPB lists online, mail, and phone options for Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Use the current contact details on the report or the bureau’s official dispute page because processes and addresses can change. Keep a copy of the full submission and proof of delivery. For mailed disputes, certified mail with a return receipt is one way to document delivery.
  5. Review the investigation result. The bureau forwards the dispute and relevant information to the furnisher, investigates, and reports the result. The FTC describes a 30-day bureau investigation period. Furnishers generally must investigate and respond within 30 days of receiving a dispute, according to the CFPB. These are general process timelines, not a guarantee that every case will be resolved on exactly day 30; additional circumstances can affect timing. If the information is corrected, check the updated report.

What if the bureau says the dispute is frivolous or irrelevant?

A bureau can decline to investigate a dispute it reasonably considers frivolous or irrelevant—for example, if the submission does not identify the information being challenged clearly enough. The CFPB says the bureau must notify the consumer of its decision and reason within five business days after deciding. A precise explanation supported by relevant records is more useful than a general request to “fix my credit.”

Is an identity-theft account handled differently?

Yes. If the account or debt resulted from identity theft, report it at IdentityTheft.gov to obtain an Identity Theft Report and recovery plan, and contact the affected financial institutions. The CFPB describes a separate identity-theft block request: send the bureau an Identity Theft Report, proof of identity, and a letter identifying the fraudulent debts or information (CFPB identity-theft guidance).

The CFPB says a bureau must block qualifying identity-theft information within four business days after receiving the required request. This is not a shortcut for removing an accurate debt or an error unrelated to identity theft. A bureau can refuse or remove a block if the submission is incorrect or the debt did not result from identity theft.

A fraud alert or security freeze can help protect against further misuse, but neither replaces a dispute or identity-theft block request. A fraud alert placed with one nationwide bureau must be relayed to the others; a security freeze must be placed separately with each bureau.

What if the file belongs to someone with a similar identity or to a deceased person?

Mixed file

If the report includes another person’s information because of a similar name or identity, dispute the specific entries as inaccuracies with every bureau showing them. TransUnion’s dispute FAQ also addresses suspected mixed files (TransUnion dispute support).

Deceased person’s report

TransUnion says a dispute concerning a deceased person’s report should include a copy of the death certificate, the person’s legal name, the companies reporting the item, a partial account number from the report, the reason for the dispute, and supporting documents. Treat that as TransUnion’s stated process; check each other bureau’s current instructions rather than assuming the requirements are identical.

What if the dispute does not fix the problem?

Review the result and contact the bureau or furnisher if the explanation does not resolve the error. A further dispute can include relevant information that was missing from the first submission. If the direct dispute with a credit or consumer reporting agency does not resolve the issue, the affected consumer may submit a complaint to the CFPB. The CFPB requires consumers to dispute the information directly with the reporting agency first. If you submit on someone else’s behalf, check the portal’s authorization requirements before filing.
