Yes, you can deposit a check at an ATM—but only at a machine that accepts deposits for your bank and account. The ATM accepting the check does not mean the funds are immediately available: posting, holds, and withdrawal timing depend on your bank’s rules, the machine, the deposit time, and the check.

Can I deposit a check at any ATM?

No. Some ATMs accept withdrawals but not deposits, and deposit eligibility may depend on the bank, account, and machine. Before making a trip, check your bank’s ATM locator or official ATM information for a deposit-enabled machine that supports your account. Do not assume an out-of-network ATM will accept a check because it accepts your card for cash withdrawals. Bank of America’s ATM deposit guidance describes its own service; Chase’s deposit agreement sets out that bank’s terms. Verify your institution’s rules rather than treating either example as universal.

How do I deposit a check at an ATM?

  1. Find an eligible ATM. Use the bank’s locator or official instructions to confirm that the machine accepts check deposits for your account.
  2. Review and endorse the check. Check the payee and amount, then sign in the endorsement area as your bank directs. Wait until you are ready to deposit before signing. Do not use mobile-deposit wording for an ATM deposit unless your bank specifically instructs you to.
  3. Start the transaction. Insert or swipe your card, or authenticate using the method the ATM requires. Choose the deposit option and the account that should receive the funds.
  4. Follow the machine’s instructions. Insert the check as prompted and enter or confirm the amount. Review the account and amount shown before submitting. The exact sequence, and whether an envelope or deposit slip is needed, varies by bank and ATM. For example, Bank of America says its ATMs do not require either.
  5. Keep the confirmation. Take the receipt or save the electronic confirmation. Check any account or amount details printed on it, and keep it until the deposit is reflected correctly.
  6. Check when the funds will be usable. Review the receipt, app, hold notice, and account agreement. Acceptance at the ATM is not a promise of immediate access.

Do I have to endorse a check for ATM deposit?

Follow the depositing bank’s endorsement instructions and sign in the designated area. Chase’s general check-deposit guidance says the endorser should be the payee and advises waiting to endorse until ready to cash or deposit; the exact requirements can vary by institution. Chase’s check guidance is an example, not a rule for every bank. An instruction such as “For Mobile Deposit Only” is meant for mobile deposit and should not be added to an ATM check unless your bank expressly tells you to do so.

When will my ATM check deposit be available?

Deposit acceptance, account posting, and funds availability are different events. A check may appear in your account before it has finally cleared, and a bank may restrict access while it processes the deposit. The hold notice and your account agreement are the best sources for the release date that applies to your deposit.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says there is no requirement for immediate availability. Its ATM-specific guidance, last modified September 6, 2024, says a check deposited at your own bank’s ATM could take up to two business days to become available; for a different bank’s ATM, funds generally must be available by the fifth business day after the banking day of deposit, though a bank may release them earlier. These are general descriptions, not a guarantee for every check or account. CFPB guidance on ATM check deposits.

Cutoffs matter. The CFPB’s general hold guidance, reviewed August 28, 2026, says a bank’s cutoff cannot be earlier than noon for an ATM or other non-branch deposit location. A deposit made after the bank’s cutoff may count as received on the next business day. A bank’s written terms may set a later cutoff or a more favorable availability schedule. For instance, Chase’s agreement effective June 14, 2026, lists 11 p.m. Eastern (8 p.m. Pacific) as the cutoff for most ATM deposits, subject to an earlier cutoff disclosed for a particular ATM. That is a Chase-specific example, not a general ATM cutoff. CFPB guidance on check holds and Chase’s deposit agreement.

Under the CFPB’s general guidance reviewed August 28, 2026, a check over $5,525 may receive different treatment: $225 must generally be available the next business day; amounts up to $5,525 are generally available within two business days for local checks; and amounts above $5,525 are generally available within seven business days. The page also identifies circumstances that can permit longer holds, including a new account less than 30 days old, repeated overdrafts, a deposit at another institution’s ATM, suspected fraud or uncollectibility, and emergencies. The applicable rule and account terms determine the actual schedule.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) explains that an exception hold can include up to six additional business days for a deposit made at an ATM not owned by the bank. Its June 2025 consumer guidance says the bank must provide notice stating the reason for an exception hold and when funds will be available; a check subject to an exception hold would generally be available no later than the seventh business day, with longer timing requiring the bank to establish reasonableness. Why is my ATM check deposit on hold?

A hold gives the bank time to process a check and assess whether it can collect the funds. Possible reasons include the deposit being made at another bank’s ATM, a new account, repeated overdrafts, a large check, suspected fraud or uncollectibility, or an emergency. The bank may also apply its regular processing schedule or cutoff.

Read the bank’s hold notice for the reason and expected release date. If the notice is missing or unclear, contact the bank. An account credit, including a provisional credit, does not necessarily mean the check has cleared or cannot be reversed if it is returned. Your bank’s notice and deposit agreement control the details; Chase’s agreement, for example, describes Chase’s own longer-delay cases and notice procedure.

What should I do if the ATM did not credit my check?

Contact your bank promptly through its official ATM-deposit claim or dispute channel. Keep the receipt and provide as much transaction detail as possible:

  • ATM location or identifier
  • Date and approximate time of the deposit
  • Check amount and receiving account
  • A short description of what happened, such as an error message, a check retained by the machine, or an amount that differs from the receipt
  • Any photo of an error screen and relevant account records

Should I use an ATM, branch, or mobile deposit?

There is no channel that is always faster or safer. Choose based on whether the method accepts your deposit, the bank’s cutoff and availability terms, whether you need in-person help, and what confirmation you can retain.

Method What to verify Practical consideration
ATM That the machine accepts check deposits for your bank and account; applicable cutoff and hold schedule. Keep the ATM receipt or confirmation. The machine may have bank-specific insertion or packaging instructions.
Branch or teller The branch’s hours, deposit acceptance, cutoff, and applicable availability terms. Staffed assistance may be useful if you have a question or need help documenting a problem.
Mobile app Eligibility, image and endorsement requirements, submission cutoff, and mobile-deposit availability schedule. Mobile deposit has separate instructions and may follow a different timetable. Bank of America, for example, requires app submission with photos of both sides of the check. Bank of America mobile deposit instructions.

Check your bank’s own instructions before switching methods. Do not apply one channel’s endorsement, submission, or timing rules to another.
