Derby County (The Rams) Limited reported an £11.29 million loss for the year ended 30 June 2025, net liabilities of £44.87 million at that date and net debt of £61.89 million in a separate accounts analysis. These figures describe different things; none is a measure of David Clowes’s personal debt. The latest full accounts identified in the Companies House filing history were filed on 7 November 2025, so they do not show the club’s financial position in 2026.
What do Derby County’s latest accounts show?
The audited accounts are for Derby County (The Rams) Limited and cover the year ended 30 June 2025. Companies House lists them as filed on 7 November 2025 and as the latest full accounts for that company in the filing history available here. Companies House filing history
| Measure | Reported figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Loss for the year | £11.29m | The company’s loss over the year ended 30 June 2025. |
| Net liabilities | £44.87m | Liabilities exceeded assets at 30 June 2025 under the balance-sheet presentation. |
| Net current liabilities | £70.07m | Current liabilities exceeded current assets at 30 June 2025. |
| Net debt | £61.89m | The separate net-debt analysis in the accounts, calculated from debt and cash items. |
These figures come from the company’s audited accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025. They should not be combined into one headline “debt” figure: each uses a different accounting measure.
Why are the debt and liability figures different?
“Debt” is often used casually to describe several distinct obligations, but the accounts separate net debt from total creditors and balance-sheet liabilities. Net liabilities are not an amount the club must immediately pay in cash, and broad creditors are not interchangeable with the narrower net-debt figure.

Net debt: £61.89m
The accounts’ net-debt analysis lists £63.51m of debt due within one year and £1.62m in cash at 30 June 2025. Subtracting the cash from that debt gives reported net debt of £61.89m. The accounts also list £3.20m of creditors due after more than one year, mainly player registration and agent fees.
Current creditors: £79.50m
The balance sheet shows £79.50m of creditors due within one year, a broader total than the £63.51m debt line used in the net-debt analysis. At the same date the company had £7.81m of debtors due within one year, as well as £1.62m cash. Current creditors include categories such as accruals and deferred income, player registration and agent fees, trade creditors, and tax and social-security balances.

Net liabilities: £44.87m
Net liabilities are a balance-sheet measure: they show liabilities exceeding assets after the relevant accounting groupings are applied. The accounts’ £44.87m net-liabilities figure is not a synonym for net debt or net current liabilities, and it does not by itself establish how much cash the club needed on a particular day.
What drove the financial picture?
Derby County’s summary of its 2025 results said the club spent around £12m in the transfer market during the reporting term. It named arrivals including Ebou Adams, Kenzo Goudmijn, Jacob Widell Zetterström, Sondre Langås, Lars-Jørgen Salvesen and Carlton Morris. The club also cited transfer receipts from sales and sell-on clauses involving Eiran Cashin, Liam Delap, Jayden Bogle, Morgan Whittaker and Jason Knight.

The club said £10.9m of players arriving and registering after 1 July would be detailed in the following year’s accounts. That timing matters: transfer activity and its accounting treatment can fall across reporting periods, so this figure should not be added to the 2025 account measures as if it were already included in the same period. The transfer details and timing are from the club’s Financial Results: Year Ending June 2025.
Does Derby County have Profit and Sustainability headroom?
Derby County said it had £25.3m of headroom over the three-year Profit and Sustainability period in its 2025 results summary. This is the club’s reported position, not an independent recalculation. It is also not cash in the bank: regulatory headroom and available cash measure different things, and the statement does not guarantee future compliance if results, funding or rules change.

Is David Clowes personally responsible for the club’s debt?
The published liabilities are those of Derby County (The Rams) Limited, not a personal balance sheet for David Clowes. The company accounts state that Clowes Developments (UK) Limited funded the purchase of Derby County in 2022 and separately acquired Pride Park Stadium. In May 2025, the club and stadium were brought together again within a new holding company; the accounts say Derby County (The Rams) Holdings Limited would be the reporting entity to the EFL for the 2026 year end. Those corporate distinctions matter when discussing who owes what. The 2025 accounts
Clowes Developments’ own group results are separate from Derby County’s. For the year ended 31 March 2025, the developer reported £147.1m turnover and £5.4m operating profit before exceptional items; it attributed the shortfall in operating profit and return on sales mainly to property valuation movements. Those figures are not Derby County revenue and do not establish that the amounts were available to fund the club or guaranteed for future support. What happened to the proposed takeover?
In a message published on 22 August 2026, Clowes said a takeover that had been expected to complete on 10 August did not go ahead and that Derby had taken itself off the market. He wrote: “We started the day expecting completion of a takeover and ended it stunned, in a daze and pondering steps we didn’t expect to have to take.” He also said he intended to focus on running the club and support the manager and players within the budget agreed earlier that year. Clowes’s official message
That is an owner’s account of the failed transaction and his intentions, not a new financial statement. It does not update the 30 June 2025 balance sheet or establish how much funding was provided after that date, what the club’s later cash position was, or whether future support is guaranteed.
