How to Delete Your Personal Information From the Internet—and Why You Should

You can’t erase every trace of yourself online, but a focused cleanup can remove accounts, reduce broker listings, and make sensitive information harder to find.

You usually can’t erase all of your personal information from the internet, but you can make much of it harder to find. Start by deleting accounts and posts you control, then ask websites and data brokers to remove or suppress records, and request removal of eligible search results. The goal is to reduce exposure—not to promise a permanent, complete deletion.

Keep three outcomes distinct: source removal changes or deletes the page hosting the information; search-result removal hides a result from a particular search engine but leaves the page online; and broker suppression may stop a profile from appearing or being sold while allowing the broker to retain data or add the profile again later.

What personal information should you look for?

A useful audit goes beyond your current name and address. Look for information that can identify you, connect you to other people, reveal where you live or work, or make it easier to impersonate you.

  • Full name, aliases, age, date of birth, current and previous addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.
  • Relatives, household members, associates, employer, job history, property ownership, and vehicle details.
  • Social profiles, usernames, photos, posts, comments, location data, old forum accounts, and public wish lists.
  • Court, marriage, divorce, bankruptcy, professional-license, and other public-record entries.
  • Advertising IDs, device identifiers, breach-exposed credentials, and information in people-search reports or marketing databases.
  • Information about children or other household members that could expose them or help identify you.

Publicly displayed details are different from highly sensitive information such as passwords, Social Security numbers, bank details, medical records, and identity documents. Treat any exposure of the latter as a higher-priority security issue, not merely a privacy cleanup task.

Veltec ID Protector Ink Roller - Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp Set (Blue, Stamp+3 Refills)
  • SHIELD YOUR PRIVACY WITH THE ID DEFENDER ROLLER STAMP: Tired of worrying about your personal information falling into the wrong hands? The ID Defender Roller Stamp offers a simple yet effective solution. With a unique wide camouflage pattern, it quickly and easily conceals sensitive data on a variety of surfaces.
  • PRIVACY PROTECTION: useful not only as an ADDRESS BLOCKER or ID POLICE, but also keeps away preying eyes from invoices, authority documents, checks, bank statements and many more.
  • SIMPLE TO USE: Just remove the cover and swipe. The wide swipe makes it easy to cover sensitive information.
  • VERSATILE APPLICATION: Ideal for a variety of documents, including contracts, court documents, shipping labels, tax returns and more.
  • LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.

Why remove or limit it?

Personal details can be combined to make targeted scams and impersonation more convincing. An address, employer, relative’s name, or previous location may help someone tailor a phishing message or attempt social engineering against a financial or workplace account. Public profiles and broker listings can also increase unwanted calls, texts, mail, profiling, and advertising, or create risks involving harassment, stalking, doxxing, reputation, or family privacy.

Exposure does not mean identity theft will happen, and removing a listing cannot prevent it. The practical aim is to reduce what strangers can easily assemble about you. The FTC describes people-search sites as data brokers that compile information—including public records and social-media or broker data—and warns that information can return when source data changes. FTC: What to know about people-search sites that sell your information.

How to audit your exposure before requesting removal

Search methodically and keep a private record of what you find. Try your full name in quotation marks, then combine it with a city, phone number, email address, previous address, or employer. Search old usernames and handles, and try phone numbers in more than one format. Search for email addresses in quotation marks and check image results for names and usernames.

Look beyond the first page of a general search. Check people-search sites, social networks, old forums and blogs, professional profiles, property pages, government and court portals, and any breach-notification service you choose to use. A listing may also be copied or syndicated elsewhere.

Use a private tracking sheet such as this:

URL Information exposed Source type Action Date requested Result Recheck date
Exact page address For example, phone or address Broker, social site, public record Delete, correct, suppress, or request review Date sent Pending or outcome Planned follow-up

Do not publish the inventory, email it unencrypted, or upload identity documents unless they are genuinely necessary. A separate email address for requests can help keep cleanup correspondence organized.

Delete accounts and content you control first

Direct account actions are often the clearest place to start because you can authenticate with the service. Work through old shopping, delivery, dating, forum, gaming, and social accounts; remove public details and content before closing an account when the service offers separate controls.

  1. Export information you may need for records, receipts, or personal archives.
  2. Delete old posts, comments, photos, videos, reviews, public wish lists, and profile details that you no longer want visible.
  3. Remove saved addresses, payment methods, contacts, location history, and connected apps where the account provides those controls.
  4. Revoke third-party app access you no longer use.
  5. Use the service’s privacy or account settings to close the account, or contact support if there is no self-service option.
  6. Save the confirmation email or ticket number and recheck after the service’s stated processing or retention period.

Uninstalling an app does not necessarily delete its account, and deactivation may only hide a profile. Services may retain transaction, fraud-prevention, tax, legal, or backup records. Group posts, replies, and material copied by others can also survive account closure. Ask what was deleted, what was retained, and whether a suppression record remains to keep the profile from being recreated.

Ask the original website to remove the information

For each page you want changed, identify the site hosting it and use the channel that fits the content. Look for Privacy, Do Not Sell or Share, Opt out, Delete my information, or Contact us. Submit the exact URL and only enough information to match the record. Ask for deletion, correction, suppression, or de-indexing as appropriate; if the content is syndicated, ask whether the request reaches affiliates, mirrors, or syndication partners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For posts, photos, impersonation, harassment, or copyright issues, a reporting or moderation route may work better than a general privacy form. Keep evidence of the submission and recheck the specific URL and a name search later. A site may call a profile “removed” when it has only hidden it from public search or stopped selling it, so ask what action was actually taken.

If an address is posted alongside a credible threat, preserve evidence before requesting removal. Prioritize immediate safety and consider contacting law enforcement, a workplace or school safety team, or a domestic-violence or stalking support organization. A routine marketing opt-out is not a substitute for urgent help with threats, nonconsensual intimate imagery, identity documents, or information about a minor.

Request removal of eligible Google Search results

Google offers Results about you and a broader private-information removal request. Its eligibility examples include home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, government ID numbers, bank-account or credit-card numbers, images of signatures or IDs, private medical records, and confidential usernames or passwords. Google also accepts certain doxxing reports involving personal information paired with threats or a large aggregation of personal information without a legitimate purpose. See Google’s personal information removal guidance.

  1. Sign in to the Google account you want to use and open Results about you, or use Google’s private-information removal form.
  2. Submit the exact URL of an affected result, identify the information exposed, and complete any requested contact or identity verification.
  3. Track the request in Google’s interface and submit each relevant result URL. Google says it evaluates the URLs submitted for review; one request should not be assumed to cover every page on a site. See Google’s Results about you guidance.
  4. If the source page has already been corrected or deleted but Google still shows old text, request a refresh of the outdated result.

Google removal affects Google Search results, not the source page, other search engines, social networks, archives, or public records. It is not guaranteed when content is considered newsworthy or in the public interest, and the information may appear at a new URL. Contact the host as well whenever source removal is possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check other search engines separately

Use the privacy or legal-removal process for other search engines you use; eligibility and controls differ, so Google’s process is not universal. Submit each exact result URL, contact the host for source removal, and request a stale-result refresh if the source has changed. Recheck while logged out or in a private-browsing session to see what an ordinary visitor can find.

Opt out of people-search and data-broker sites

The FTC describes two broad approaches: submit opt-outs manually, one site at a time, for free, or pay a removal service to make and monitor requests. The manual process is straightforward but repetitive:

  1. Search a people-search site for your name, phone number, or address.
  2. Find the site’s official opt-out or privacy instructions—not a suspicious advertisement.
  3. Submit the request with only the information needed to match the listing.
  4. Record the date, URL, confirmation, and whether the profile was deleted, hidden, or merely excluded from sale.
  5. Repeat for other prominent sites and check again after several weeks.

Some sites require identity verification. Ask what happens to the information you provide and be cautious if a site requests a driver’s license or other highly sensitive ID. Redact fields that are not needed for verification, and do not provide a full Social Security number unless a verified legal process genuinely requires it. The FTC notes that opting out does not remove underlying government records and that profiles can reappear when source data changes; see its people-search guidance.

California residents: use DROP for registered data brokers

As of August 18, 2026, California residents can use the state’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) to send a single request to registered data brokers. It directs those brokers to delete non-exempt personal information associated with the consumer and stop selling it. Brokers are required to process DROP requests at least once every 45 days beginning August 1, 2026; that is a processing cycle, not a promise of immediate removal. See the DROP portal, California’s DROP service page, and the California Delete Act statute and effective provisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that you are a California resident and review the platform’s terms and privacy disclosures.
  2. Provide the identifying details needed to match your records and submit the deletion and opt-out request.
  3. Save the confirmation or request identifier, monitor status, and check major people-search sites after processing.

There is a privacy trade-off: DROP needs identifying information to match you with broker records, and its terms say submitted information may be disclosed to brokers to process the request. The system is not a nationwide deletion tool. It does not cover non-California residents, every company, data collected directly by ordinary businesses under a separate relationship, exempt information, government records themselves, private-site or news content, or brokers outside the system’s reach. California’s DROP system requirements provide additional program details.

Use privacy rights that apply where you live

Outside DROP, check your state attorney general or privacy regulator and the company’s privacy-rights page. Depending on your location, the company, and the type of information, you may have rights to delete or correct data, access it, opt out of sale or sharing, or limit use of sensitive information. Children, teens, employees, tenants, patients, students, and customers may also have specific privacy channels or protections.

There is no single U.S. right that lets every resident force every company to erase all data. Laws can have exceptions for legal obligations, fraud prevention, security, recordkeeping, and other purposes, and some information may be outside a law’s scope. Don’t assume that a European-style “right to be forgotten” applies universally in the United States.

Handle public records and copied high-risk material realistically

Public records are among the hardest information to remove. Opting out of a people-search profile does not erase the government or court record from which it was drawn. Depending on the record and location, you can ask the relevant office about address confidentiality or redaction, use an address-substitution program if eligible, request removal of unnecessary personal details from an online copy, or seek a court order where legally available. You can separately ask search engines or aggregators to remove or limit their copies.

Professional licenses, corporate records, court filings, real-estate records, government contracts, and some academic or professional publications may be intentionally public or subject to public-interest and legal exceptions. A removal request may not succeed even when the information is personally sensitive.

If credentials or financial information were exposed in a breach, removing a broker listing will not undo that exposure. Change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, monitor affected accounts, and consider a credit freeze. Do not assume a removal service can erase breach dumps or copies circulating beyond its reach.

Reduce future exposure and secure your accounts

  • Use unique passwords and a password manager; enable multifactor authentication, preferably with an authenticator app or security key.
  • Change any password exposed in a breach, especially if it was reused elsewhere.
  • Freeze credit with the three major U.S. credit bureaus when appropriate.
  • Remove unused app permissions and browser extensions; turn off unnecessary location history and ad personalization.
  • Avoid publishing your home address, personal phone number, birth date, or travel plans. Use separate email addresses for shopping, accounts, and public contact.
  • Where lawful and practical, use a business or professional mailing address instead of your home address.
  • Review family members’ public profiles. Shared addresses, phone numbers, and relatives’ listings can expose connections that a request about your own record will not remove; submit separate requests for other people only with their authorization.
  • Do not submit sensitive information to an unverified cleanup service.

Should you pay for a removal service?

A paid service can be useful when recurring broker requests, multiple addresses, or a household’s volume of listings makes manual work impractical. It is a labor-saving option, not a universal eraser: services vary in the sites they cover, the records they can reach, and whether they repeat requests when data returns. Start with direct account deletion, official search-engine tools, applicable legal rights, DROP if eligible, and manual opt-outs for the most visible listings before deciding whether monitoring is worth paying for.

Before signing up, check the service’s site coverage, recurring scans, re-removal policy, request and outcome reporting, number of people and contact details covered, data collection and retention, sharing practices, cancellation and refund terms, support for failed requests, and geographic availability. Ask whether it covers broker listings only or also copied content, social profiles, public records, private databases, or doxxing; do not infer broader coverage from a large site count.

For example, Incogni’s pricing page listed Standard at $7.99 per user per month billed annually at $95.88 and Unlimited at $14.99 per user per month billed annually at $179.88 when checked in August 2026; prices and features can change. The company lists recurring removals and says its Unlimited plan includes custom removals from additional sites. See Incogni’s pricing and plan details. DeleteMe describes ongoing monitoring, re-removals, and periodic privacy reports for its standard service, but the available official pricing page does not state a clear current standard price; see its pricing and plan information. Optery advertises a free signup option and presents paid plans on its pricing page; check that page for current terms rather than assuming a plan price or coverage.

Keep a repeatable cleanup schedule

After the initial cleanup, check again in 30–60 days, then quarterly or semiannually. Search sooner after moving, changing phone numbers, starting a business, filing a lawsuit, or experiencing a breach. For each newly found item, record the page, request route, outcome, and next check date; this evidence makes it easier to spot a failed request or a returning profile.

  • Audit completed and high-risk items prioritized.
  • Accounts and content you control removed or closed, with confirmations saved.
  • Source websites contacted and exact URLs logged.
  • Eligible search-engine requests submitted for each affected result.
  • People-search opt-outs or applicable privacy-rights requests recorded.
  • Doxxing, threats, identity documents, and breach exposures escalated through appropriate safety or security channels.
  • A follow-up date set for results that may return.
