How to Decide Whether to Claim Social Security at 62, Full Retirement Age, or 70

Claiming at 62, full retirement age, or 70 changes when Social Security starts and the monthly benefit. Compare your SSA estimates against cash needs, work, health, household benefits, and Medicare timing.

There is no single best age to claim Social Security retirement benefits. Claiming at 62 generally means a smaller monthly benefit for more years; waiting until full retirement age (FRA) avoids the age-based early-claim reduction; and delaying beyond FRA increases the monthly benefit through age 70. The right choice depends on your own estimates, cash needs, work plans, health and longevity assumptions, and household benefits.

What changes when you choose a claiming age

Your claiming age affects two things most directly: when payments start and the size of your monthly retirement benefit. Starting earlier gives you payments sooner, but a claim before FRA reduces the monthly amount under Social Security’s age-based adjustment rules. Waiting beyond FRA earns delayed retirement credits, increasing the monthly amount through age 70. Those are different ways of balancing earlier cash flow against a larger later benefit—not a formula that identifies one universally right age.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) says benefits depend on your earnings history and the age you begin receiving them. Its FAQ describes the choice as one that affects your monthly amount for the rest of your life. Use your own estimate rather than a general example: sign in to my Social Security and review the estimates for different starting ages.

When comparing estimates, look at both the monthly amount and the date payments would begin. A higher estimate for a later claiming age does not include the payments you would have received had you started earlier. Conversely, the fact that an earlier claim produces more months of payments does not make it the better choice automatically. Your comparison is about the timing and size of income together, and about whether your finances can accommodate a wait.

Find your full retirement age first

Full retirement age is not the same for everyone. It depends on your birth year, so do not assume that 67 is your FRA unless it applies to you. Check SSA’s birth-year table before comparing estimates. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67; for this group, claiming at 62 can reduce the monthly benefit by as much as 30 percent compared with the FRA amount. SSA stated that maximum reduction in 2024.

FRA is the reference point for understanding both early-claim reductions and delayed retirement credits. It is not an age by which you must stop working, and reaching it does not require you to claim benefits.

Before making a comparison, identify your birth year and exact FRA rather than relying on a rounded age or someone else’s estimate. The 30 percent figure applies to people born in 1960 or later who claim at 62 with an FRA of 67; it is not a universal reduction for every birth year. If your FRA differs, the age-based adjustment for your situation also differs. SSA’s birth-year table and your personal estimate are the starting points.

Compare claiming at 62, FRA, and 70

Claiming point What it means Questions to consider
62 The earliest age for retirement-benefit eligibility. Claiming before FRA reduces the monthly amount; the reduction is based on your FRA and claiming age. Do you need income now? Will you keep working, and could the earnings test affect payments? How would a lower monthly amount fit your later budget?
Your FRA The age-based adjustment reference point. Claiming at FRA avoids the reduction for claiming early. What is your exact FRA? What does your personal SSA estimate show? Would a spouse’s or survivor’s benefit change the household comparison?
70 Delayed retirement credits have accumulated through age 70. Credits stop increasing at 70. Can you cover expenses while waiting? How would a higher monthly benefit fit your expected spending, longevity assumptions, and household benefits?

Compare the amount and start date together. If you wait, you forgo payments during the waiting period in exchange for a larger monthly benefit later. A higher monthly estimate at 70 does not by itself show whether waiting is feasible or preferable: the answer also depends on what you need to live on before then and how long you expect to receive benefits.

For each option, write down the estimated monthly benefit, the age payments begin, and the months you would wait compared with claiming earlier. Then ask whether you have income or savings to meet expenses during that period. Consider how the option would work in your household—not just on an individual estimate—if another person’s benefit or survivor eligibility may be affected. This makes the trade-off concrete without assuming that one age will be best for everyone.

Understand the increase for delaying past FRA

For people born in 1943 or later, delayed retirement credits accrue at 8 percent per year after FRA, up to age 70, according to SSA’s delayed-credit guidance. This is the stated annual credit rate, not a promise that every person’s full retirement income rises by exactly 8 percent in every year: the precise benefit estimate depends on the person’s record and claiming age. SSA states that the benefit increase stops at age 70. There is no advantage from delayed retirement credits to postponing a retirement claim beyond that age.

Waiting can be difficult if you do not have another way to meet expenses. Before treating a larger age-70 estimate as a plan, map out how you would pay for housing, food, health care, debt payments, and other regular costs between your chosen retirement date and the date benefits begin. The relevant question is whether the delay fits your finances, not simply whether the later monthly number is larger.

Delayed credits can make waiting attractive to someone who can manage the gap and values a higher later monthly benefit, but the 8 percent rate alone is not a complete comparison. You also need to consider payments not received while waiting, your expected longevity, and any household benefits. SSA’s statement that the increase stops at 70 is also a practical boundary: if you are considering waiting past 70, do not count on further delayed retirement credits to raise the retirement benefit.

Use SSA examples only as illustrations

SSA’s 2026 examples show how widely the monthly amounts can differ for a worker with an unusually high earnings record. The agency illustrates a worker who earned the taxable maximum in every year beginning at age 22:

Illustrated claiming age SSA example monthly benefit How to read it
62 $2,969 2026 SSA illustration for the specified maximum-earnings worker; not an average benefit or a personal forecast.
Full retirement age $4,152 2026 SSA illustration for the same earnings assumption; your FRA depends on birth year.
70 $5,181 2026 SSA illustration for the same earnings assumption, with delayed credits through age 70.

These figures are not amounts to use in your own budget unless your earnings record and other relevant details match the illustration. They do not establish an average benefit, a guaranteed future payment, or which age will produce the better outcome for you. Your personal SSA estimate is the useful starting point.

The example is useful for seeing that claiming age can change the illustrated monthly amount, but it cannot tell you how much you personally would receive. It assumes a worker with earnings at the taxable maximum every year from age 22, a specific earnings history that may be unlike yours. Do not scale the figures up or down to create a forecast. Review the estimates tied to your own earnings record and compare the available claiming ages there.

Work through the decision factors that can change your answer

Cash needs and other income

Start with the amount you need each month and when you need it. List reliable income available if you delay, such as wages or other retirement income, alongside expenses and savings you could draw on. If claiming earlier is necessary to meet basic expenses, a theoretical advantage from waiting may not be practical. If you can cover the gap, compare the value of those earlier payments with the larger monthly estimate available after delaying.

Ask whether your current income will continue, how long savings could cover a shortfall, and whether the delay would require reducing spending or drawing down assets. These are cash-flow questions, not reasons to assume that claiming early or late is always superior. A later claim has to be sustainable through the period before payments start; an earlier claim should be considered against the lower monthly estimate that applies after claiming before FRA.

Work and the earnings test

You can work while receiving retirement benefits, but before FRA, earnings above an annual limit can cause SSA to withhold benefits under its earnings test. The limits are year-specific. SSA’s 2026 limits are $24,480 for someone below FRA throughout the year, and $65,160 in the year the person reaches FRA. In that latter year, the limit applies only to earnings before the FRA month. Starting with the FRA month, earnings do not reduce benefits under this test.

These thresholds concern earnings and withheld benefit payments; they are not a ban on working and do not mean that your benefit is permanently lost dollar for dollar. SSA says it recalculates benefits at FRA to credit months in which payments were withheld because of excess earnings. After FRA, earnings do not affect the benefit amount. If you expect to work while claiming before FRA, check the applicable year’s limit and consider how withholding could affect your near-term budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, identify whether you will be below FRA all year or will reach FRA during the calendar year, since the applicable 2026 limit differs. For the year you reach FRA, count only earnings before the month you reach FRA when checking the $65,160 threshold. Do not treat either 2026 amount as permanent: verify the limit for the calendar year in which you plan to work and claim. If benefits are withheld, SSA says it adjusts the benefit at FRA to credit the months affected.

Health and longevity assumptions

Health and expected longevity matter because they affect how long you might receive benefits, but neither can be known with certainty. A break-even comparison asks how long it would take for the larger payments associated with a later claim to make up for payments forgone while waiting. There is no single authoritative break-even age established for everyone. Any calculation requires your benefit estimates and assumptions about longevity, taxes, investment returns, and household benefits. Treat the result as a scenario, not a prediction or a rule for choosing an age.

If you compare scenarios, state the assumptions rather than relying on a break-even number without context. Different assumptions about how long benefits are received, taxes, investment returns, or household benefits can change the comparison. A calculation based on one set of assumptions is not a guarantee of lifetime totals and cannot substitute for considering whether you need the income sooner.

Spouse, former spouse, and survivor benefits

A decision based only on your own retirement estimate can miss effects on a household. SSA’s deemed-filing rules apply to some people eligible for both their own retirement benefit and a spousal benefit; depending on birth date and eligibility, applying for one can mean being treated as having applied for the other. Voluntary suspension can generally suspend other benefits on the worker’s record, with exceptions that include some divorced-spouse benefits. These rules are record- and eligibility-specific. If a spouse, former spouse, or survivor benefit may be involved, ask SSA how the rules apply to your circumstances rather than relying on a simplified “file and suspend” strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When reviewing household options, note whose work record a possible benefit is based on and whether you may be eligible for more than one type of benefit. Do not assume that an application for one benefit can be made independently of another, or that suspending a worker’s retirement benefit leaves every related benefit unchanged. Deemed filing and voluntary suspension have qualifications and exceptions; SSA can explain how they apply to your dates and record.

Medicare at 65

Delaying Social Security retirement benefits does not mean you should delay thinking about Medicare. SSA says to sign up for Medicare at 65 even if you are delaying retirement benefits. Delayed Medicare enrollment can, in some circumstances, delay coverage and increase costs. Your health coverage situation matters, so confirm the enrollment timing and consequences that apply to you; Social Security claiming and Medicare enrollment are separate decisions.

Put the Medicare question on a separate timeline from your retirement-benefit choice. If you will reach 65 before you plan to claim Social Security, verify when to enroll based on your health coverage situation and what a delay could mean for coverage or costs. Do not treat waiting for a retirement benefit to begin as a reason by itself to postpone Medicare enrollment.

A practical way to make the comparison

  1. Confirm your FRA. Use SSA’s birth-year table. This tells you which age is the relevant FRA reference point for your record.
  2. Review your own estimates. Sign in to my Social Security and compare the retirement-benefit estimates for starting at different ages, including 62, your FRA, and 70 where applicable. Use the estimates tied to your earnings record, not the maximum-earner examples above.
  3. Build a cash-flow plan for each option. For each possible start age, note when payments would begin, the estimated monthly amount, and how you would cover expenses during any waiting period.
  4. Account for work. If you plan to claim before FRA and continue earning, check the current annual earnings limit and whether the special limit for the year you reach FRA applies. Do not assume a 2026 threshold applies in another year.
  5. Check household interactions. Identify whether spousal, former-spouse, or survivor benefits could be relevant. Ask SSA about deemed filing and suspension rules for your eligibility and record.
  6. Plan Medicare separately. If you are approaching 65 and delaying retirement benefits, verify your Medicare enrollment timing and how your current health coverage affects it.
  7. Compare scenarios, not slogans. Consider near-term cash needs, the later monthly amount, your health and longevity assumptions, work, and household benefits together. If you calculate a break-even point, make the assumptions explicit and do not treat the result as universal.

Keep the comparison grounded in information you can verify: your SSA estimate, your FRA, the calendar-year earnings limit if you will work, and the Medicare timing that fits your coverage. You can then see which option meets your income needs and how much uncertainty remains around longevity or household outcomes. If a spouse, former spouse, or survivor benefit is part of the picture, resolve those eligibility questions before treating an individual estimate as the household answer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming everyone’s FRA is 67. FRA depends on birth year; check the SSA table before interpreting an estimate.
  • Treating the age-70 amount as free extra income. Delaying means going without retirement payments during the waiting period, so the larger later amount must be weighed against both the forgone payments and your ability to cover expenses.
  • Using maximum-earner examples as forecasts. SSA’s 2026 figures above assume earnings at the taxable maximum every year beginning at age 22.
  • Ignoring earnings limits when claiming early. If you work before FRA, the earnings test may affect when benefits are paid; verify the limit for the relevant calendar year.
  • Delaying Medicare because you delayed Social Security. The decisions are separate, and SSA advises planning for Medicare at 65.
  • Applying a universal break-even age or household rule. Results depend on the individual estimate and assumptions, while spousal and survivor rules depend on eligibility and the record involved.
  • Assuming delayed credits continue past 70. SSA says the increase stops at age 70, so do not build a plan around additional delayed retirement credits after that age.
  • Confusing withheld benefits with a permanent dollar-for-dollar loss. SSA recalculates benefits at FRA to credit months withheld because of excess earnings, though the withholding can still affect cash flow before then.

What to verify before you choose

Benefit estimates and claiming rules should be checked against SSA information for your own record. Annual earnings limits and maximum-benefit illustrations can change, so verify current figures for the year you plan to claim. If your decision involves a spouse, former spouse, survivor benefits, work before FRA, or Medicare coverage, confirm those details with SSA before acting. A useful decision is one that fits the actual estimates and household circumstances—not one based on a generic age recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the earliest age I can claim Social Security retirement benefits?

Retirement benefits may begin at 62. Claiming before your full retirement age reduces your monthly amount under SSA’s age-based adjustment rules.

Is full retirement age 67 for everyone?

No. Full retirement age depends on your birth year. Check SSA’s birth-year table; 67 applies to people born in 1960 or later.

Does waiting until 70 keep increasing my benefit after that?

No. For people born in 1943 or later, delayed retirement credits accrue at 8 percent per year after full retirement age through age 70. SSA says the increase stops at 70.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I work while receiving Social Security before full retirement age?

Yes, but earnings above the annual limit can lead SSA to withhold benefits before full retirement age. For 2026, the limits are $24,480 if you are under FRA all year and $65,160 in the year you reach FRA, counting earnings before your FRA month. Verify the limit for the relevant year.

If I delay Social Security, should I delay Medicare too?

Not automatically. SSA says to sign up for Medicare at 65 even if you delay retirement benefits. Medicare enrollment and Social Security claiming are separate decisions, and your health coverage situation can affect timing and costs.

Is there a universal break-even age for claiming at 62, FRA, or 70?

No single break-even age applies to everyone. A comparison requires your own benefit estimates and assumptions about longevity, taxes, investment returns, and household benefits. Treat any result as a scenario, not a guaranteed answer.

The Bottom Line

Compare your own SSA estimates for 62, your exact full retirement age, and 70 against the income you need, the payments you would forgo while waiting, work and earnings limits, household benefits, and Medicare timing. No age is right for everyone; start with your record in my Social Security and verify the rules that apply to your circumstances.
