Nike stock fits a portfolio only when three conditions line up: you understand the company’s current operating trajectory, the market price offers an acceptable return for the risks, and a single athletic-apparel company does not leave your portfolio dangerously concentrated. NIKE, Inc. Class B common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under NKE. That makes it a company-specific equity, not a diversified holding.
The latest full-year evidence available here covers Nike’s fiscal year ended May 31, 2026. It shows a business in transition: reported revenue was broadly flat, earnings declined, wholesale improved, and direct and digital sales weakened. Those facts can support either a recovery thesis or a decision to wait, depending on your valuation assumptions, time horizon and existing exposures. They do not, by themselves, establish that NKE is cheap, expensive, suitable for you or appropriate to buy.

Start with the decision, not the brand
A familiar brand is not the same thing as a suitable stock. To decide whether NKE belongs in your portfolio, answer four separate questions:
Recommended Free Tools
- What am I buying? A minority interest in one listed company whose results depend on consumer demand, product launches, pricing, channels, regions and execution.
- What might it be worth? An estimate based on future earnings or cash generation, compared with the current share price.
- What could go wrong? A company-specific setback can hurt NKE even when a broad market fund is stable.
- Does it improve my portfolio? Your existing holdings may already give you substantial exposure to consumer discretionary businesses, footwear, apparel or large US consumer brands.
Keep those questions distinct. A strong product franchise can coexist with a disappointing stock if expectations are already reflected in the price. Conversely, a difficult year can create an opportunity if the business can recover and the price more than compensates you for the uncertainty.

What Nike reported for fiscal 2026
The following figures come from NIKE, Inc.’s fiscal 2026 results release dated June 30, 2026 and its Form 10-K for the year ended May 31, 2026, filed July 15, 2026. “Reported” figures use the company’s reported currency; “currency-neutral” removes the effect of exchange-rate changes and should not be treated as a separate accounting result.
| Measure | Fiscal 2026 result | Change or qualification | Why it matters to a portfolio decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $46.4 billion | Flat reported; down 2% currency-neutral | Shows little top-line growth in the year, while exchange rates affected the comparison. |
| Net income | $3.1 billion | Down 3% | Profit declined even though reported revenue was broadly unchanged. |
| Diluted earnings per share | $2.10 | Down 3% | A historical earnings base; it is not a current valuation multiple without a current share price. |
| Gross margin | 42.9% | Up 20 basis points | Margin improved modestly despite the weak earnings year. |
| NIKE Brand wholesale revenue | $27.5 billion | Up 6% reported | Wholesale was the stronger major NIKE Brand channel. |
| NIKE Direct revenue | $17.7 billion | Down 6% reported | Direct sales weakened, creating an execution question about the channel mix. |
| NIKE Brand Digital | Not separately stated as a dollar total | Down 12% | Digital demand was a notable weakness within Direct. |
| Converse revenue | $1.2 billion | Down 31% reported | The smaller brand experienced a sharp contraction. |
| Inventory | $7.5 billion at May 31, 2026 | Flat year over year | Stable inventory is more reassuring than an increase, but it does not prove that all products are selling at desired prices. |
| Cash and short-term investments | $9.0 billion at May 31, 2026 | Balance-sheet amount at year-end | Provides financial resources; assess it alongside obligations and future capital needs. |
| Shareholder distributions | Approximately $2.5 billion | $2.4 billion of dividends and $123 million of repurchases during fiscal 2026 | Historical capital returns, not a promise of future dividend growth or buybacks. |
| Return on invested capital | 18.7% | Versus 20.2% at May 31, 2025; NIKE identifies this as non-GAAP | The decline warrants attention when judging operating efficiency and reinvestment returns. |
Read the operating picture by channel and region
Wholesale growth does not cancel out Direct weakness
NIKE Brand wholesale revenue rose 6% to $27.5 billion, while NIKE Direct revenue fell 6% to $17.7 billion. Within Direct, digital sales decreased 12%. This divergence matters because channels have different economics, customer relationships and operating requirements. A recovery thesis should explain whether wholesale growth can continue without sacrificing pricing, and how Direct and digital can return to sustainable growth.
Do not assume that a larger wholesale number is automatically better. Wholesale can expand distribution and reach, but retailers control part of the customer relationship and may influence promotions. Direct channels can provide more control over presentation and data, yet they require investment in stores, websites, fulfilment and customer acquisition. Evaluate the mix in relation to gross margin, marketing costs, inventory and cash generation rather than treating any channel as inherently superior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBrand and geography require separate checks
Converse revenue fell 31% to $1.2 billion. Because Converse is smaller than the NIKE Brand, its decline does not determine the whole company, but it is evidence that brand performance is uneven. Ask whether management can stabilize the brand without diverting disproportionate resources from higher-return opportunities.
Regional results also differed. Greater China and EMEA were among the regions reporting declines, while North America provided offsetting strength. A portfolio thesis should identify the assumptions behind regional recovery: consumer demand, local competition, product relevance, pricing, inventory and currency. “International growth” is not one uniform outcome, and a strong North American result cannot automatically repair weakness elsewhere.
Margins and returns show quality, not just sales
Gross margin reached 42.9%, up 20 basis points, even as net income and diluted EPS each fell 3%. That combination suggests that gross-margin improvement alone was not enough to lift total profitability. Examine selling and administrative expenses, demand-generation spending, restructuring or transition costs and the effect of revenue mix in subsequent filings.

NIKE reported an 18.7% return on invested capital at May 31, 2026, compared with 20.2% a year earlier. The company labels ROIC a non-GAAP measure, so compare the definition consistently across periods and companies. A falling ROIC can indicate that invested resources are producing less profit, although one year does not establish a permanent trend.
Inventory and liquidity are useful cross-checks
Inventory was $7.5 billion at May 31, 2026, flat year over year. Flat inventory is preferable to an uncontrolled build, but the aggregate number cannot reveal whether the mix is healthy or whether products required markdowns. Review inventory by category, turnover, gross margin and subsequent selling activity where disclosed.
Cash and equivalents plus short-term investments totaled $9.0 billion at fiscal year-end. Liquidity can support product development, marketing, technology and shareholder returns, but it is not excess cash available without competing claims. Consider debt, lease commitments, working-capital needs and the capital required to restore growth.
Separate management’s plan from evidence
NIKE describes its strategy this way in the fiscal 2026 Form 10-K: “Our strategy is to achieve sustainable, profitable long-term revenue growth by leading with sport, creating innovative, ‘must-have’ products, building deep personal consumer connections with our brands and delivering compelling consumer experiences through digital platforms and at retail.”
This is management’s stated strategy, not independent proof that it will succeed. Translate it into testable observations:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Sport-led innovation: Are new products gaining repeat demand, full-price sell-through and retailer support?
- Consumer connections: Are engagement and customer retention producing profitable purchases rather than merely raising marketing costs?
- Digital and retail experiences: Is Digital growth recovering while Direct economics remain attractive?
- Profitable growth: Do revenue, margins, cash flow and ROIC improve together, or is one improving at the expense of another?
Write down what would confirm your thesis and what would disconfirm it. For example, a recovery thesis might require several periods of improving Direct trends, stable or improving gross margin and better returns on invested capital. A cautious thesis might be reinforced by continued digital declines, repeated regional weakness or growth that depends on heavier discounting.

Valuation is a separate decision
The fiscal 2026 results do not establish a current NKE share price, price-to-earnings ratio, forward estimate or peer valuation. Those inputs change continuously and must be refreshed before making a price-sensitive decision. Do not divide a live price by the historical $2.10 fiscal 2026 diluted EPS and call the result a forward multiple; that would be a trailing calculation using a clearly identified historical denominator.
Build a valuation in a consistent way
- Choose the earnings basis. Decide whether you are using trailing fiscal 2026 EPS, a normalized earnings estimate or a forward consensus estimate. Label the period and the source.
- Estimate future cash generation. Consider revenue growth, gross margin, operating expenses, taxes, working capital and capital spending. Use a range rather than a single precise forecast when uncertainty is high.
- Apply a required return. A company-specific equity should clear the return you require for its volatility, business risk and holding period.
- Compare with the current price. Calculate the implied return or multiple using the same date for the price and the estimate. Include dividends, but do not assume that historical distributions will continue at the same rate.
- Stress the assumptions. Test slower sales, continued Direct weakness, currency pressure, lower margins or a delayed recovery. If modestly worse assumptions eliminate the expected return, the margin of safety may be thin.
A valuation range is more informative than a single target. The table below is a framework, not a forecast.
| Scenario | Operating assumptions to test | What you would need to believe |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery | Direct and digital stabilize, regional declines narrow, innovation improves demand and margins remain resilient. | Recent weakness is largely temporary and management executes its transition. |
| Base case | Wholesale remains useful, Direct improves slowly, Converse remains mixed and profitability recovers gradually. | Execution is adequate but not exceptional; valuation must leave room for a long recovery. |
| Downside | Digital and regional demand remain weak, discounting increases, margins or ROIC fall and growth investments take longer to pay off. | Some current expectations prove too optimistic; downside protection becomes the priority. |
Check whether NKE improves your portfolio
Match the risk to your time horizon
A single-company position can experience a large drawdown because of one product cycle, management decision, regulatory issue, supply disruption or demand shock. Decide how long you can hold without being forced to sell. Money needed in the near term generally has less capacity to absorb equity volatility than long-term capital.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Risk tolerance has two parts: your willingness to tolerate a decline and your ability to tolerate it financially. A person who dislikes volatility may sell at the worst moment even if the long-term thesis remains intact. A person with a fixed spending need may be unable to wait for a recovery. Size any position so that a plausible company-specific loss would not derail your plan.
Look for concentration before adding
List your direct and indirect exposure to consumer discretionary businesses, athletic apparel, footwear, retailers and large US consumer brands. A broad fund may already own NKE, while employer stock or other individual holdings may create additional concentration. Consider sector, factor and geographic overlap, not only ticker symbols.
NKE may add differentiated exposure if your portfolio is dominated by unrelated industries, but it may compound risk if several holdings depend on the same consumer spending cycle, promotional environment or US dollar movement. Correlations can rise during market stress, so diversification should be assessed under difficult conditions as well as normal ones.

Decide what role the stock would play
Define the purpose before buying: long-term growth, a quality-company allocation, income, a recovery situation or another clearly stated role. The role determines which evidence matters most. An income-oriented investor should examine dividend coverage and cash needs; a growth investor should focus on sustainable reinvestment returns; a recovery investor must monitor milestones and set a time limit for the thesis.
Fiscal 2026 distributions were approximately $2.5 billion, consisting of $2.4 billion in dividends and $123 million in repurchases. These are historical amounts. Dividends can change, and repurchases are discretionary; neither should be treated as a guaranteed component of future total return.
Compare NKE with the alternative you would otherwise own
The relevant comparison is not “Nike versus nothing.” It is NKE versus the next best use of your capital, often a diversified fund or another individual company. Apply the same questions to every option.
| Comparison axis | Questions for NKE | Questions for a diversified fund or another stock |
|---|---|---|
| Expected return versus price | What future earnings or cash flow are you assuming, and what return does today’s NKE price imply? | What growth, income, fees or valuation assumptions drive the alternative’s expected return? |
| Business durability | Can product innovation, brand demand and channel execution withstand competition and changing consumer preferences? | How diversified are revenue sources, and which businesses dominate results? |
| Downside | What company-specific event could impair the thesis? | How much issuer-specific risk is reduced, and what market-wide risks remain? |
| Concentration | Would NKE increase exposure to consumer discretionary, footwear or US brands? | Does the alternative duplicate existing holdings or provide broader exposure? |
| Income and capital allocation | Are dividends and any buybacks supported by cash generation and sensible capital needs? | How are distributions, fees and reinvestment handled? |
| Effort and monitoring | Can you follow product, channel, regional, margin and balance-sheet developments? | What level of monitoring is required to maintain the thesis? |
If you cannot explain why NKE should outperform the alternative after adjusting for risk, concentration and effort, the diversified option may be the more coherent choice for your plan. That is a portfolio-construction conclusion, not a claim about NKE’s absolute quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a repeatable decision process
Complete this sequence before placing an order:
- Define the allocation role. Write one sentence describing why the position would exist and the conditions that would make the thesis wrong.
- Record the evidence date. Start with the fiscal 2026 figures above, then obtain the most recent filing and results available at the time of your decision.
- Map the business. Break revenue and profit drivers into brand, channel and region. Note where trends are improving and where they are deteriorating.
- Build three operating cases. Use recovery, base and downside assumptions. Document growth, margins, investment needs and the time required for each case.
- Refresh the market data. Capture the current share price, share count, valuation measures and analyst estimates on the same date. Do not mix stale and current inputs without labeling them.
- Compare alternatives. Run the same framework on a broad fund or another stock you would buy instead.
- Test portfolio impact. Add the proposed exposure to your existing sector, factor, currency and company concentrations.
- Set monitoring triggers. Choose a small number of observable indicators, such as Direct growth, digital sales, regional trends, gross margin, inventory and ROIC.
- Choose a position size and review schedule. Base the size on your risk budget, not on confidence alone. Review when new information changes the thesis, rather than reacting to every daily price move.
Signals to monitor after the decision
Evidence that would support a recovery thesis
- Direct and digital sales show sustained improvement rather than one favorable comparison.
- Wholesale growth remains healthy without excessive promotions or deteriorating retailer economics.
- Product launches produce repeat demand, better full-price sell-through and stronger regional results.
- Gross margin holds or improves while operating expenses grow more slowly than revenue.
- ROIC stabilizes and begins to recover from the 18.7% fiscal 2026 level.
- Inventory remains controlled while sales improve, reducing the need for markdowns.
Evidence that would weaken the thesis
- Digital declines persist or Direct growth depends on heavier discounting.
- Greater China, EMEA or other regions continue to contract without a credible path to stabilization.
- Converse remains in steep decline and requires resources without improving returns.
- Revenue is flat while expenses rise, causing further earnings and ROIC pressure.
- Inventory grows faster than sales or the company reports broad-based margin pressure.
- Capital returns rise while investment needs, leverage or operating results deteriorate.
These indicators are decision tools, not guarantees. A single quarter can be noisy; look for direction, consistency and management’s explanation against the numbers.
Understand the main risk categories
NIKE’s Form 10-K contains the precise Risk Factors section and should be read for the company’s full disclosures. The categories below are a way to organize your review, not a claim that one risk is dominant.

- Product and innovation execution: Research, design, launches and marketing must convert into profitable demand, not merely attention.
- International operations: Regional demand, local competition, regulation, currency and political or economic conditions can produce results that differ from North America.
- Manufacturing and supply chain: Supplier capacity, lead times, logistics, input costs and disruptions can affect availability and margins.
- Channel transition: A shift between wholesale, stores and digital can change customer acquisition costs, pricing control and inventory risk.
- Capital allocation: Dividends and repurchases compete with product, technology, marketing and supply-chain investment.
Use scenario analysis to avoid treating any one risk as either impossible or certain. Ask how quickly management could respond, how much financial flexibility remains and whether the share price already reflects the problem.
Account, tax and practical considerations
The right account depends on your jurisdiction, tax status and financial plan. Dividend taxation, capital-gains rules, withholding, currency conversion and loss-offset rules vary, so obtain current guidance for your location before trading. In a taxable account, record purchase dates, cost basis and distributions accurately. In a tax-advantaged account, check contribution, withdrawal and investment restrictions.
Also account for trading costs, bid-ask spreads, foreign-exchange effects if your base currency is not the US dollar and the possibility that an exchange-listed stock can move materially between your decision and execution. These practical details do not change the business analysis, but they affect realized returns.

A concise NKE portfolio checklist
- ☐ I know that NKE is a single-company NYSE Class B equity, not a diversified fund.
- ☐ I have separated fiscal 2026 operating facts from management’s expectations.
- ☐ I understand the contrast between $27.5 billion of NIKE Brand wholesale revenue and $17.7 billion of NIKE Direct revenue.
- ☐ I have considered the 12% decline in NIKE Brand Digital sales and the 31% reported decline in Converse revenue.
- ☐ I have reviewed regional performance, including weakness in Greater China and EMEA and offsetting North American strength.
- ☐ I have refreshed the current share price and valuation instead of relying on historical EPS alone.
- ☐ I have modeled at least a base case and a downside case, not only a recovery case.
- ☐ I know how NKE would change my sector, brand, currency and company concentration.
- ☐ I have decided what evidence would cause me to reduce, hold or reject the position.
- ☐ I have sized the position so a company-specific loss would be survivable for my plan.
Bottom line: fit depends on price and portfolio context
Fiscal 2026 presents a mixed operating picture: $46.4 billion of revenue was flat on a reported basis and down 2% currency-neutral; net income of $3.1 billion and diluted EPS of $2.10 each fell 3%; gross margin improved to 42.9%; wholesale grew while Direct, digital and Converse declined. Those facts make NKE a business to evaluate, not an automatic buy or avoid.
Nike stock is a plausible portfolio candidate when the available evidence supports a credible improvement path, the current price offers an adequate expected return under conservative assumptions, and the position adds useful exposure without creating unacceptable concentration. If you cannot establish those three conditions with current valuation data and a defined monitoring plan, waiting or choosing a diversified alternative is a defensible portfolio decision.
