Start with one specific learner and measurable outcome, validate demand before recording, use a hosted platform unless you have a strong reason to build your own stack, and confirm payment and tax responsibilities for your exact country, gateway, and product.
“Global” does not simply mean uploading videos and accepting international cards. You must also plan for currencies, seller-country payout support, VAT or GST, refunds, privacy, accessibility, localization, customer support, and the economics of each sale.
Decide whether a course is the right product
An online course works best when students can make meaningful progress through a repeatable sequence of explanations, demonstrations, practice, and feedback.
A different product may be better if the value depends mainly on personal judgment, accountability, or live interaction:

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Self-paced course: Best for repeatable skills, evergreen content, and students in different time zones.
- Live cohort: Better when deadlines, feedback, discussion, or accountability are central.
- Workshop: Useful for testing demand or teaching one focused result in a short session.
- Coaching or consulting: Appropriate when each customer needs a customized plan.
- Membership: Fits an evolving library, community, or continuing support.
- Corporate training: May work better when organizations need team licenses, reporting, or customized delivery.
- Blended program: Combines recorded lessons with calls, office hours, peer review, or coaching.
Self-paced products can scale more easily, but they require clearer instructions, stronger onboarding, better exercises, and more automated support. A low-priced course can also become unprofitable if customers expect unlimited personal help.
Choose a specific learner and outcome
Broad topics are difficult to sell because they do not tell a buyer what will change. “An online course about photography” is weaker than “a six-week course that helps beginner food bloggers take publishable recipe photographs with a smartphone and natural light.”
Define:
- Who the learner is and their starting skill level.
- The immediate problem they want to solve.
- The result they want and how urgent it is.
- What they will be able to do after completion.
- What the course deliberately excludes.
- Your relevant experience and qualifications.
Use an outcome that describes observable behavior:
By the end of this course, [specific learner] will be able to [observable action] under [relevant conditions], producing [visible or measurable result].
“Understand,” “learn,” and “master” are not outcomes on their own. Replace them with actions such as creating, calculating, presenting, analyzing, repairing, writing, or launching.

Validate demand before recording
Do not spend months producing a course based only on enthusiasm, social-media likes, or survey responses such as “I would buy this.” The strongest signal is a person willing to pay for a defined result.
- Interview 10 to 20 people who match your target audience.
- Ask what they have already tried, what failed, what alternatives cost, and why solving the problem matters now.
- Review recurring questions in relevant communities, search results, support forums, and reviews of existing courses.
- Publish a short lesson, checklist, webinar, or email series.
- Collect waitlist signups and note which promises attract the most interest.
- Run a paid workshop or pre-sell a small beta.
- Use early buyers’ objections and questions to revise the curriculum.
Good validation signs include existing spending on alternatives, a repeated and costly problem, urgency, and buyers willing to provide payment details. A large audience is useful, but it is not proof that the audience wants this particular course at this price.
Design the curriculum around transformation
Build a progression of decisions and actions rather than a collection of loosely related topics. A complete course will often include:
- Orientation, prerequisites, and expectations.
- A baseline assessment.
- A sequence of modules that gradually increases difficulty.
- Demonstrations and worked examples.
- Practice activities and downloadable resources.
- Checks for understanding.
- Troubleshooting and common mistakes.
- A final project or other evidence of the promised result.
- A next-step recommendation.
Each lesson should answer six questions:
- What will the learner be able to do?
- Why does it matter?
- What is the shortest clear explanation?
- What example or demonstration makes it concrete?
- What should the learner practice?
- How will the learner know whether the task was completed correctly?
A reliable lesson structure is objective, concept, demonstration, guided practice, independent task, self-check, and next action. Move optional reference material into a library instead of forcing every learner through it.

Choose the delivery format
Self-paced
Self-paced delivery is practical for international students because it avoids live scheduling. It still needs captions, transcripts, clear navigation, automated reminders, a support channel, and a defined method for handling questions.
Cohort-based
A cohort can justify a higher price because it includes deadlines, live sessions, feedback, and community. Set fixed start and end dates, publish times in multiple time zones, record sessions, and define policies for late enrollment and missed calls.
Blended
Blended programs combine recorded material with live calls, office hours, peer review, or coaching. They can produce stronger outcomes but require limits on facilitator capacity, response times, and included support.
Produce the minimum viable course
Your first version does not need a studio or dozens of hours of video. Prioritize clear audio, legible demonstrations, accurate captions, strong examples, useful exercises, reliable downloads, consistent lesson names, and a professional checkout and onboarding experience.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Write the learning outcomes and completion criteria.
- Map the modules and lessons.
- Script only material that requires precision; use bullet points elsewhere.
- Record one pilot lesson.
- Test it with a target learner and fix confusing sections.
- Record and edit the remaining lessons for clarity rather than decoration.
- Add captions, transcripts, exercises, answer keys, and downloads.
- Test the course on desktop and mobile.
- Complete a full purchase, enrollment, and access test.
Use the format that suits the material:
| Format | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Talking head | Builds trust and connection | More demanding to record and edit |
| Screen recording | Efficient for software and demonstrations | Can become visually monotonous |
| Slides with narration | Easy to revise | Requires good visual and audio design |
| Demonstration | Shows the actual skill | May require careful camera placement |
| Text and downloads | Searchable, printable, and accessible | Less engaging for some subjects |
| Live recording | Efficient for cohorts | May include dead time and technical problems |
Do not turn every piece of information into video. A checklist, transcript, worksheet, or searchable reference can be more useful than another recording.

Choose where to sell
There is no universal best platform. The main choice is between an owned storefront and a marketplace.
| Model | Best for | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted course platform | Creators with an audience or a business to build | More control over branding, pricing, customer relationships, and upsells | Monthly fees and responsibility for marketing |
| Marketplace | Creators who need built-in discovery | Existing learner traffic and localized purchasing | Less control over pricing, branding, promotion, and customer data |
| Self-hosted stack | Businesses needing maximum control | Flexible ownership and customization | More responsibility for security, updates, payments, refunds, backups, and tax records |
Teachable
Teachable is a focused option for creators who want course hosting and native commerce tools. Teachable says Teachable Payments is built on Stripe infrastructure, is available in 41 countries, and supports automatic tax calculation, collection, and remittance in 45 or more markets. Its “Go Global” features add local payment methods and adaptive pricing; the support documentation signals an additional 2.8% fee for that bundle. Confirm availability and the exact price for your country and billing term on the official pricing page and payments setup documentation.
The important limitation is gateway-specific responsibility. If you use a custom payment gateway, Teachable says tax obligations may remain with you. Its tax documentation explains the distinction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThinkific
Thinkific suits creators and education businesses that need structured courses, communities, memberships, coaching, webinars, bundles, payment plans, or order bumps. On the US pricing page, Basic was listed at $54 per month billed monthly or $40 per month billed annually, Start at $109 monthly or $82 annually, and Grow at $219 monthly. Thinkific announced an approximately 10% increase affecting several plans from August 13, 2026. These figures were shown in August 2026 and may vary by country, billing cycle, taxes, or promotion. Check the current pricing page and its payment-fee documentation.
Thinkific Payments was shown at approximately 2.9% on the pricing page, but the detailed rate depends on country, currency, payment method, and other variables. Thinkific is not a marketplace, so it is a weaker choice for someone whose main need is built-in discovery.
Podia
Podia is aimed at solo creators who want courses, downloads, coaching, communities, websites, landing pages, and email tools in one relatively simple system. Annual-billing prices shown in August 2026 were $42 per month for Mover, $84 for Shaker, and $150 for Earthquaker. Mover showed a 5% Podia transaction fee, while Shaker and Earthquaker showed no Podia transaction fee; Stripe or PayPal processing fees still apply. Podia advertises a 30-day trial, more than 20 currencies, and sales-tax support in 230 countries. Verify current terms at its pricing page.
Kajabi
Kajabi is designed for higher-value expert businesses that need websites, funnels, email automation, digital products, courses, communities, coaching, and multiple offers. Annual-billing prices shown were $71 per month for Starter and $143 for Basic, compared with regular monthly prices of $89 and $179. For US entities, listed Kajabi Payments card rates ranged from 2.9% + $0.30 to 2.7% + $0.30 by plan, while third-party payment-provider fees were listed at 2%, 1%, or 0.5%. Country-specific rates may differ. See Kajabi’s current pricing and payment information.
Its fixed cost can be difficult to justify for a beginner selling one inexpensive course without an audience.
Udemy
Udemy is a marketplace rather than an owned course storefront. It may suit a creator without an audience whose topic matches existing marketplace demand and can benefit from platform discovery and reviews. Udemy states that it handles applicable VAT and GST for purchases made through its website and uses localized pricing mechanisms, including a global pricing engine that adjusts prices by market and currency. See its VAT/GST guidance, teaching FAQ, and pricing-engine filing.
The trade-off is less control over pricing, promotions, branding, customer data, email marketing, and the customer journey. A premium business may use a marketplace for discovery or a lower-priced introductory product while keeping its premium experience on a branded platform.
Compare platforms using the risks that affect your finances
Before committing, ask each provider these questions:
- Audience ownership: Can you export names, email addresses, purchase history, enrollment status, consent records, and legally available progress data?
- Seller eligibility: Can your country receive payouts? What identity checks and tax forms are required?
- Payment coverage: Which currencies, cards, wallets, PayPal, local methods, payment plans, and recurring payments are supported?
- Tax: Does the platform calculate, collect, and remit tax, and for which countries, gateways, and products?
- Learning: Are quizzes, assignments, certificates, prerequisites, drip schedules, cohorts, communities, and analytics included?
- Marketing: Are landing pages, coupons, bundles, affiliates, order bumps, abandoned-cart recovery, automations, and integrations available?
- Portability: Can you export source content and migrate students if pricing, policies, or access change?
- Resilience: Can you maintain backups, revoke access, update lessons without breaking links, and communicate during an outage?
Set up global payments
International payment acceptance has several separate parts: buyers must be able to pay, the processor must approve the transaction, you must be eligible to receive the payout, and the transaction must be recorded correctly.
Check:
- Supported seller countries and payout currencies.
- Local payment methods in your target markets.
- Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and recurring-payment support.
- Currency-conversion and cross-border charges.
- Payout timing and reserve policies.
- Identity verification and tax-form requirements.
- Fraud screening, disputes, refunds, and chargebacks.
- Payment-plan failures and access after a missed installment.
Complete a controlled test purchase before launch. Check the currency, tax line, receipt, welcome email, enrollment, mobile access, refund flow, and payout record.

Understand taxes and legal responsibilities
“International tax” may include sales tax, VAT, GST, digital-services taxes, income tax, withholding tax, platform reporting, and invoicing obligations. The answer depends on your location, the buyer’s location, whether the buyer is a consumer or business, the product format, the gateway, and whether the platform acts as the seller or merely provides software.
Do not accept a vague statement that a platform “handles taxes.” Ask whether it calculates tax, collects it from the buyer, remits it to authorities, or simply provides reports. Confirm the exact country, payment gateway, and product type.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, Teachable says its native gateway can calculate, collect, and remit taxes in multiple markets, while its custom-gateway path can leave responsibility with the creator. It may also require forms such as W-9, W-8BEN, or W-8BEN-E. Its documentation is useful for platform configuration, but it is not a substitute for professional advice.
Pre-launch compliance checklist
- Determine your local business, registration, income-tax, and reporting obligations.
- Confirm transaction-tax responsibility for the exact gateway and product.
- Check whether prices should be tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive in each market.
- Submit required identity and tax forms.
- Keep records of buyer location, tax collected, refunds, and fees.
- Provide compliant receipts or invoices where required.
- Publish refund, cancellation, subscription, and payment-plan terms.
- Ask a qualified tax professional about unusual jurisdictions or significant sales volume.
Privacy and data protection
Your business may process names, email addresses, payment-related records, progress, quiz results, support messages, community posts, marketing consent, device data, and analytics. Publish a privacy notice, record marketing consent where required, use vendor data-processing agreements, limit collection of sensitive data, set retention and deletion rules, restrict staff access, and prepare a process for data requests.
For EU-facing operations, review the official General Data Protection Regulation. Selecting a platform does not automatically make your business compliant.
Consumer rights and refunds
At checkout, clearly state what is being purchased, the price and currency, taxes and fees, access duration, delivery method, support included, renewal terms, payment-plan rules, and refund or cancellation policy. Digital-content cancellation rights can depend on the buyer’s jurisdiction and whether the buyer expressly agreed to immediate access and acknowledged the consequences. Do not use one universal template without jurisdiction-specific review.
Copyright and licensing
Audit music, stock footage, images, fonts, templates, screenshots, software demonstrations, guest contributions, student submissions, and AI-assisted assets. Keep a license register. Also define whether downloads may be shared, whether account sharing is prohibited, what team licenses permit, and whether student work or testimonials may be used in marketing.
For US copyright guidance, consult the US Copyright Office. AI output should be treated as a draft: check accuracy, rights, originality, cultural suitability, and any disclosure requirements.
Accessibility
Build accessibility into production. Provide accurate captions and transcripts, descriptive links and file names, sufficient color contrast, clear headings, accessible PDFs, meaningful alt text, keyboard-friendly controls where you control the interface, and verbal explanations of important visual information when appropriate. The W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 are a useful reference, but captions alone do not guarantee legal compliance.
Localize for international students
Translation is only one part of localization. Decide whether to offer one language with captions, translated subtitles and transcripts, dubbing, separate language versions, or local teaching assistants.
Localize the title, sales promise, checkout, emails, captions, transcripts, worksheets, quizzes, certificates, refund information, and support instructions. Use native reviewers for technical, regulated, or culturally specific subjects.
Review examples, names, currencies, units, date formats, legal references, professional qualifications, humor, imagery, and assumptions about technology access. For live components, publish times in UTC and local examples, rotate sessions when possible, record every session, and provide an asynchronous alternative.
Test mobile playback, low-bandwidth access, transcript downloads, different browsers, local payment methods, email deliverability, and access from each target region. A translated course can still fail if the price, payment method, schedule, or support experience feels foreign.

Price the course globally
Do not simply convert a US-dollar price into every currency. Consider local purchasing power, competing offers, taxes, processing and conversion fees, refund rates, corporate versus consumer buyers, local substitutes, and whether support is included.
Choose a pricing model
- One-time purchase: Simple for a defined, evergreen transformation.
- Payment plan: Improves affordability but creates failed-payment and access-management work.
- Subscription: Fits an evolving library or community but requires ongoing value and churn management.
- Cohort price: Can be higher because it includes deadlines, feedback, and live support.
- Tiered offers: For example, course only; course plus group support; course plus private coaching; or a team license.
You can use one base price with automatic conversion, localized regional prices, purchasing-power adjustments, or separate consumer and business pricing. State whether tax is included, what currency is charged, whether access is lifetime or time-limited, what happens after a payment failure, and whether downloads remain available after access ends.
Calculate break-even economics
Use actual country-specific fees rather than assuming that every sale costs the same:
Net revenue per sale
= price paid
− taxes remitted
− payment processing
− platform transaction fee
− affiliate commission
− refund and chargeback allowance
Break-even sales
= monthly fixed costs ÷ net contribution per sale
A platform with a higher subscription may become cheaper at scale if it has no platform transaction fee. A marketplace’s revenue share may be acceptable when you have no audience and it supplies discovery. Compare the total cost, not just the advertised monthly plan.
Build a sales and distribution system
Do not depend entirely on a marketplace or social-media algorithm. Build at least one owned channel, especially an email list and customer records that you can lawfully retain and export.

Launch with a controlled beta
Phase 1: Define
- Choose one audience and one transformation.
- List prerequisites and exclusions.
- Define completion criteria.
- Select self-paced, cohort, or blended delivery.
Phase 2: Validate
- Interview prospective students.
- Publish a sample.
- Run a paid workshop or beta.
- Pre-sell before full production.
- Record objections and revise the offer.
Phase 3: Build
- Create the curriculum map.
- Test a pilot module.
- Record, edit, caption, and transcribe.
- Create exercises and downloads.
- Prepare onboarding and support documentation.
Phase 4: Configure commerce
- Select the platform and gateway.
- Connect the payout account.
- Complete identity and tax forms.
- Configure currencies and payment methods.
- Set tax display, refunds, subscriptions, and payment plans.
- Add privacy, terms, and refund pages.
Phase 5: Run quality assurance
Test checkout on desktop and mobile, currency display, tax calculation, coupons, payment plans, failed-payment behavior, refunds, welcome emails, password resets, course access, video playback, captions, downloads, certificates, support contact, cancellation, and unenrollment.
Phase 6: Launch
Open a founding cohort or beta, monitor checkout and support, fix confusing lessons quickly, track completion and refunds, collect structured feedback, and only then convert the validated version into an evergreen offer or expand into paid advertising and additional languages.
Measure the results that matter
Track the full funnel:
| Area | Useful measures |
|---|---|
| Acquisition | Landing-page visits, lead conversion, email opt-ins, source, geography, and cost per qualified lead |
| Sales | Sales-page conversion, checkout completion, average order value, payment-plan uptake, refunds, chargebacks, and revenue by country and currency |
| Learning | Lesson starts, completion, quiz performance, assignment submissions, time to first result, course completion, and support requests by lesson |
| Business quality | Satisfaction, referrals, repeat purchases, upgrades, subscription churn, and contribution margin |
Contribution margin should include platform fees, payment processing, advertising, support, refunds, chargebacks, and taxes that remain your responsibility. Enrollment alone is a poor success measure. Many purchases with low completion and high refunds may indicate weak onboarding, excessive length, poor positioning, or a mismatch between the sales promise and the course.
Common mistakes and recovery steps
- Recording before validating: Sell a workshop or beta before producing the full course.
- Broad topic and weak promise: Narrow the audience and define a visible result.
- Too much content: Remove material that does not support the promised outcome.
- Information without learning: Add demonstrations, practice, feedback, answer keys, and a final project.
- Choosing a marketplace for a premium business: Keep premium delivery on a branded platform and use the marketplace only where its discovery benefits you.
- Assuming international payments mean worldwide availability: Verify seller-country eligibility, payout rules, payment methods, and regional restrictions.
- Tax ambiguity: Confirm responsibility in writing for the exact gateway, country, and product.
- Poor mobile experience: Test common devices and provide transcripts and low-bandwidth options.
- Untranslated support: Localize checkout, onboarding, refund instructions, captions, and response expectations.
- Currency confusion: State the billing currency, tax treatment, conversion behavior, and total clearly.
- No continuity plan: Back up source files, lesson text, transcripts, and lawful customer records.
- Copyright infringement: Audit every asset and maintain a license register.
- Unchecked AI material: Fact-check, rights-check, and professionally review high-stakes content.
- Unbounded live support: Set office-hour limits, response times, and paid upgrade paths.
Final platform-selection checklist
Before paying for a platform or committing your catalog, confirm:
- My seller country is supported.
- I know who receives the customer payment and who remits transaction taxes.
- I understand every platform, processor, conversion, affiliate, refund, and chargeback fee.
- The checkout supports the currencies and payment methods my target buyers use.
- I can export the customer and business records I need.
- The learning features match the promised student experience.
- The platform supports my refund, subscription, and payment-plan rules.
- I can provide captions, transcripts, accessible files, and mobile access.
- I have a privacy notice, terms, refund policy, and copyright permissions.
- I have tested purchase, enrollment, playback, support, refund, and payout flows.
- The unit economics work at my expected price and sales volume.
The right way to scale
Validate the outcome before building. Start with the smallest course capable of producing it. Choose a platform based on audience ownership, payment coverage, tax responsibility, learning features, and total cost—not the longest feature list. Treat international sales as commerce, localization, privacy, accessibility, and support rather than a currency-conversion problem. Launch with a beta, measure real student behavior, and improve before scaling advertising, subscriptions, or translation.
