A proper date table has one unique, nonblank, contiguous row for every date in the reporting range.
This guide shows how to create one with DAX, connect it to a sales table, sort calendar fields correctly, support fiscal years, and troubleshoot common problems.

What is a Power BI date table?
A date table is a dedicated model table containing one row for every date in a reporting period. It stores shared calendar attributes such as year, month, quarter, weekday, fiscal period, holidays, and working-day flags.
In a typical star-schema model, the date table is on the one side of a relationship and a fact table is on the many side:

Date[Date] 1 ──── * Sales[OrderDate]Filters flow from the date table to the fact table. Therefore, slicers and chart axes should generally use fields from Date, while measures use values from tables such as Sales.
Microsoft’s date-table guidance describes a valid date table as one with unique, nonblank, contiguous dates covering complete calendar years or complete fiscal years.
Create a date table with DAX
In Power BI Desktop, use the stable action rather than relying on a particular ribbon layout:

- Open the Modeling or Table tools area.
- Select New table.
- Enter a DAX expression.
For a controlled reporting range, use CALENDAR:

)CALENDAR generates the contiguous date range and ADDCOLUMNS adds attributes. With WEEKDAY([Date], 2), Monday is 1 and Sunday is 7. See Microsoft’s documentation for CALENDAR, ADDCOLUMNS, and WEEKDAY.
Use a range derived from your data
If the table should cover the complete years containing the earliest and latest sales dates, use:

)This follows the Sales table, but it may not cover future budgets, forecasts, or dates in other fact tables. A fixed range is often better when the model needs predictable future periods.

Set the date column’s data type
Select Date[Date] and set its data type to Date when it represents date-only values. The relationship column in the fact table must have a compatible type.
If Sales[OrderDate] includes a time component while Date[Date] contains midnight-only dates, create or transform the fact-side column into a date-only value before creating the relationship. Power BI exposes Date and Date/Time as model data types and formatting choices, while the underlying engine uses DateTime behavior in some contexts. Review Microsoft’s guidance on relationships and data types.
Connect the date table to a fact table
In Model view:
- Drag
Date[Date]toSales[OrderDate], or open Manage relationships. - Set cardinality to One-to-many (1:*).
- Put
Dateon the one side. - Use Single cross-filter direction unless bidirectional filtering is specifically justified.
- Confirm that the relationship is active.
One date table can connect to several fact tables:
Date[Date] → Sales[OrderDate]
Date[Date] → Returns[ReturnDate]
Date[Date] → Budget[BudgetDate]Each fact table needs its own relationship. Creating the date table alone does not make it filter the model.
Handling multiple date roles
A sales table may contain Order Date, Ship Date, and Due Date. A model can contain multiple relationships, but only one relationship between the same tables is normally active for a given path. Use an inactive relationship with USERELATIONSHIP inside a measure, or create separate role-playing date tables when users need to analyze several date roles independently.
Sort months and periods chronologically
Month names are text, so Power BI may sort them alphabetically:

Fix this by selecting Date[Month], choosing Column tools > Sort by column, and selecting Month Number.

For charts spanning multiple years, use Year Month and sort it by Year Month Number. Otherwise, every January may be grouped together regardless of year.
Columns created with FORMAT are text. They work well as display labels, but pair them with numeric sorting and grouping columns.
Mark the table as a date table when required
In the classic time-intelligence workflow, select the Date table, open its table menu or the Table tools area, choose Mark as date table, select Date[Date], and confirm.
Power BI validates requirements such as uniqueness, nonblank values, contiguity, and consistent timestamps. However, Microsoft’s current guidance distinguishes classic time intelligence from newer calendar-based time intelligence. Marking is not universally required for the calendar-based approach, and the available screen can vary by Power BI Desktop release. See the current date-table documentation before applying a version-specific workflow.
Test that the date table works
Create a basic measure:
Total Sales = SUM ( Sales[SalesAmount] )Then create a visual with:
- Axis:
Date[Year Month] - Values:
[Total Sales] - Slicer:
Date[Year]
Selecting a year should change the measure and display the relevant monthly periods. Use date-table fields for slicers, axes, and filters—not the fact table’s date field.
CALENDAR versus CALENDARAUTO

The simplest automatic option is:
Date = CALENDARAUTO ()CALENDARAUTO derives its range from qualifying dates across the model, not necessarily only from Sales. An unrelated historical or future date can therefore expand the table. It can also error if the model contains no qualifying date or Date/Time values. For production models, CALENDAR is usually more explicit. Read the CALENDARAUTO documentation for its range and fiscal-year behavior.

Create a fiscal date table
For a fiscal year ending in June, you can use:
Date = CALENDARAUTO ( 6 )The argument is the fiscal-year-ending month, from 1 through 12. Alternatively, create explicit fiscal fields:

Use Power Query when calendar logic should be generated before loading data, reused across reports or dataflows, or maintained alongside other transformations. Power Query is also a practical place for holiday, working-day, and regional-calendar logic.
If your warehouse already contains a certified date dimension, use it where possible. This is generally preferable for shared fiscal definitions, ISO weeks, retail 4-4-5 calendars, holidays, and consistency across multiple reporting tools. Microsoft lists DAX, Power Query, and an existing source date table as supported approaches in its date-table guidance.
When Auto date/time is enough
Power BI Desktop’s Auto date/time feature creates hidden date tables for qualifying Date or Date/Time columns in Import models. It is convenient for quick, calendar-only reports and ad hoc analysis.
It is not equivalent to one shared date dimension. Auto date/time creates separate hidden tables for separate date columns, does not provide organization-specific fiscal or retail calendars, and cannot be directly managed like a normal model table. Microsoft’s guidance on Auto date/time recommends it mainly for simple models.

When replacing Auto date/time with an explicit table, visuals that use hidden date hierarchies may need to be rebuilt using fields from the new Date table.
Common problems and fixes
Months appear alphabetically
Sort Month by Month Number. For multiple years, use Year Month sorted by Year Month Number.
Months or dates are missing
Check whether the visual uses the fact-table date, whether the date table covers the required period, whether it contains gaps, and whether the relationship is active. Put Date[Year Month] on the axis and enable Show items with no data where appropriate.

Common causes include a text date, duplicate values on the date-table side, blanks, invalid dates, or a Date/Time fact column that includes times. Normalize the fact-side value to a compatible date-only column and ensure the date table contains exactly one row per date.
A time-intelligence measure returns blank or incorrect values
Confirm that the measure uses the date table’s column, the relationship is active, the date table is contiguous, the table covers complete required years, and the visual is not using an unrelated date field. Mark the table when required by the classic time-intelligence approach.
CALENDARAUTO creates too many dates
Replace it with CALENDAR(StartDate, EndDate) and explicitly define the reporting range. CALENDARAUTO considers qualifying dates across the model.
One date table does not filter every fact table
Add a relationship from Date[Date] to the appropriate date column in each fact table. For different date roles, choose between inactive relationships with USERELATIONSHIP and separate role-playing date tables.

Final checklist
- The date column has the Date or compatible Date/Time type.
- There is exactly one row per date.
- There are no blanks or gaps.
- The table covers complete calendar or fiscal years.
- The date table is on the one side of active relationships.
- Month labels are sorted by numeric month values.
- Multi-year labels use a year-month key.
- Visuals use date-table fields for axes and slicers.
- The table is marked where the selected time-intelligence approach requires it.
- Fiscal-year naming and calendar rules are documented.
The Bottom Line
For a reusable Power BI model, create one explicit date table, give it a contiguous and controlled range, add numeric sorting fields, relate it to every relevant fact table, and use its fields in visuals. Auto date/time remains useful for simple reports, but it is not a substitute for a shared calendar in a serious model.
