What an OpenSea collection is
An OpenSea collection is a group of NFTs created under one smart contract. It is more than a visual folder or profile page: deploying the contract establishes on-chain details such as the contract name, token symbol, blockchain, and token standard.

- Open Collection: You mint items directly into your own wallet.
- Scheduled Drop: Collectors mint from a public or staged sale page.
- Collection overview page: Optional presentation content such as banners, links, text, FAQs, and featured items.
OpenSea’s no-code Create Collection workflow uses an ERC-1155 contract. A supply of one creates a single-copy item; a larger supply creates multiple copies of the same item.

Open Collection or Scheduled Drop?
Decide before you begin. The choice affects who initially owns the NFTs, the token standard, upload capabilities, and sale mechanics.
| Feature | Open Collection | Scheduled Drop |
|---|---|---|
| Initial minter | Creator | Collector |
| Initial destination | Creator’s wallet | Collector’s wallet |
| Token standard in OpenSea’s Studio comparison | ERC-1155 | ERC-721 |
| Bulk upload | No | Supported |
| Public mint phases | No | Supported |
| Reveal process | No; items are visible after minting | Supported |
| Best for | Small projects, testing, personal minting, and later sales | Public launches, allowlists, presales, and established communities |
| OpenSea fee signal | No separate Studio creation fee; gas applies | OpenSea currently states a 10% fee for NFTs minted in a primary Drop |
These features and fees are subject to change; see OpenSea’s Studio comparison and current fee documentation before launching.
What you need before starting
- An OpenSea account connected to a compatible crypto wallet that can approve signatures and transactions.
- Your artwork, music, video, or other supported media.
- The native token for gas on the blockchain you select.
- A collection name and short token symbol.
- A logo image for the contract.
- A carefully checked payout-wallet address if you plan to configure creator earnings.
- A decision about whether to mint personally or let collectors mint through a Drop.
- The rights to use and sell every uploaded file.
Gas is paid from your wallet to blockchain validators. You do not manually send gas to OpenSea. OpenSea warns that it will not send social-media messages asking you to transfer funds to a private address. Never share your seed phrase or private key.
Which blockchain should you choose?
Choose based on your audience and project requirements, not on a universal “best” chain. Consider:
- Gas cost and predictability.
- Where your intended buyers already hold funds.
- Wallet compatibility.
- Secondary-market support.
- Whether you need the widest possible marketplace reach.
- Whether creator-earnings enforcement and its marketplace limitations are acceptable.
- Whether the chain supports the Studio workflow you intend to use.
OpenSea’s current compatibility page lists networks including Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Zora, Base, Blast, Sei, B3, Berachain, Flow, ApeChain, Soneium, Shape, Unichain, Ronin, Abstract, GUNZ, HyperEVM, Somnia, and Monad. This list is volatile, and not every chain visible elsewhere on OpenSea is necessarily available for deploying a Studio collection. The Studio guide specifically describes selecting an available EVM-compatible blockchain. OpenSea’s compatibility documentation says Solana is supported for token swapping but not NFTs at this time.
Check the current compatibility list immediately before deployment.
How to create a collection on OpenSea
1. Open OpenSea Studio
- Go to OpenSea and connect your wallet.
- Open Studio from the left-hand sidebar.
- Select Create new.
- Choose Create Collection, not Drop.
OpenSea may change these labels, but Studio—not older “Create” or “My Collections” instructions—is the current documented route.

Provide the following:
- Logo image: Displayed next to the collection name. It can be changed later.
- Contract name: The on-chain name. It cannot be changed after deployment.
- Token symbol: A short identifier, typically four to seven characters. It cannot be changed after deployment.
- Blockchain: Select an available EVM-compatible network.
Before selecting Publish Contract, check the connected wallet, blockchain, contract name, and symbol. Then approve the wallet transaction. Contract deployment requires gas.
3. Complete collection details
After deployment, return to the collection in Studio and open Collection Details. Depending on the current interface, you can edit:

Do not confuse the editable display name with the on-chain contract name. Add collaborators only when necessary. They can change important collection settings, although OpenSea says they cannot create new items or edit creator-earnings payout addresses and percentages.

4. Set creator earnings
Open Creator Earnings in Studio. Enter the desired percentage and payout address or addresses supported by the interface. Verify every address character before saving.
OpenSea distinguishes between:
- Optional creator earnings: You specify a preferred percentage, but a seller may choose whether to include it.
- Enforced creator earnings: The percentage is enforced for supported sales.
OpenSea says collections launched through Studio after 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time on April 2, 2024 can enforce creator earnings through the relevant Studio contract mechanism. Compatible ERC-721-C and ERC-1155-C custom contracts may also support enforcement.
Enforcement is not universally compatible. OpenSea says enforced sales are supported on OpenSea and marketplaces powered by LimitBreak’s Payment Processor, which currently includes Magic Eden. Choosing enforcement can therefore narrow marketplace compatibility. Entering a percentage does not guarantee payment on every marketplace.
See OpenSea’s creator-earnings documentation for current controls and limitations.

5. Upload and mint the first NFT
- Open the collection’s Media & Metadata or Upload area.
- Upload the media file.
- Enter the NFT name.
- Set the supply.
- Optionally add a description, external link, and traits.
- Select Mint.
- Approve the wallet transaction and its gas cost.
The item is minted into the connected creator wallet. Minting does not sell the NFT, transfer it to a buyer, or create a listing.
6. Add more items
Return to the collection’s upload area for each additional item. OpenSea’s current FAQ says the Create Collection workflow does not support bulk-uploading multiple NFTs; items must be created individually. You can still set a supply greater than one for an individual item.
7. Improve the public collection page
The optional overview-page tool supports desktop and mobile banners, X, Discord, external-website and Telegram links, media-and-text sections, carousels, FAQs, featured NFTs and collections, section reordering, and deletion.
If you leave the overview blank, the overview tab does not appear. Collection-page media has a maximum file size of 50 MB and up to 50 sections, according to OpenSea’s overview-page documentation.

8. List an NFT for sale, if desired
After minting, open the NFT’s item page and use OpenSea’s current listing control to choose a sale method, price, currency, and duration. Review the final transaction and marketplace fee before signing. Minting alone does not put an NFT up for sale.
File formats and collection restrictions
OpenSea’s current FAQ identifies JPG, PNG, GIF, and SVG for Drops, and MP4 for “Collection or Item” uploads. It states a maximum direct-upload size of 50 MB for a single item and 5 GB for Drops.

Not every format OpenSea can display is necessarily uploadable through Studio. For example, OpenSea says GLB files hosted off-platform may be displayed but cannot be uploaded directly through Studio. Once a file type has been used in a collection, the same collection cannot mix different file types for later uploads. Decide whether the collection is image-, video-, or another supported-format-focused before minting the first item.
The Open Collection workflow also does not provide bulk upload or automatic generative creation from specified traits and rarity. Large generative projects may need an external generation and metadata process, a custom contract, or Drop tooling.
What happens on-chain?
After deployment and minting, the collection and item exist on the selected blockchain. The item page exposes the blockchain, token ID, originating smart contract, and transaction history. It should also be discoverable on marketplaces that support that blockchain, although indexing, visibility, and feature compatibility are not guaranteed.
Some edits may require another wallet signature and gas. Failed transactions can still consume gas because the transaction was attempted. The wallet that deployed the contract controls the collection and relevant creator-earnings settings, so secure that wallet carefully.
OpenSea collection fees and gas costs
Fee information below was checked against OpenSea documentation in August 2026 and can change:
- Open Collection creation: No separate OpenSea Studio creation fee, according to OpenSea.
- Contract deployment: Blockchain gas is required.
- Minting: Blockchain gas is required for each applicable transaction.
- OpenSea NFT sales: OpenSea currently says it typically charges a 1% selling fee.
- Primary Drop minting: OpenSea currently says it charges 10% of the sale price for each NFT minted in the Drop.
- Creator earnings: Separate from OpenSea’s marketplace fee and dependent on the selected earnings model and marketplace support.
Gas varies with the blockchain, congestion, transaction type, and wallet. It is paid to validators through your wallet, not sent manually to OpenSea. Do not rely on a fixed dollar estimate.
See OpenSea’s current fee page before signing a sale or launch transaction.

Studio or the collection option is missing
- Confirm you are using the current OpenSea website and looking in Studio.
- Reconnect the intended wallet.
- Check whether the wallet is on a network supported for this Studio workflow.
- Review OpenSea’s current compatibility and help pages; availability can change.
The wallet is on the wrong network or lacks gas
Switch the wallet to the network selected in Studio and ensure it holds that network’s native gas token. Do not substitute a token from another chain merely because it has the same name.
Deployment or minting failed
- Check the wallet’s transaction status.
- Look up the transaction on the selected chain’s block explorer.
- Confirm whether deployment or minting actually succeeded before clicking again.
- If it failed, remember that gas may still have been charged.
- Retry only after confirming the network, wallet balance, and transaction status.
Repeatedly clicking Mint before the previous transaction is resolved can create confusion or duplicate attempts.
The item does not appear
First confirm the mint transaction succeeded on-chain. Check the correct wallet, collection, token ID, and network. OpenSea indexing can take time, and an item’s visibility on another marketplace is not guaranteed simply because the chain is supported.

You chose the wrong collection
NFTs cannot be moved between collections later. Confirm the contract and collection on the item page rather than assuming a display-page change will transfer the token.
Someone asks for money or wallet details
Stop communicating with anyone claiming to be OpenSea support through social media or direct messages. Do not send funds to a private address, reveal your seed phrase, or approve an unexplained wallet transaction. Use OpenSea’s official website and help center instead. OpenSea’s gas guidance covers these phishing warnings.
Before you sign: a practical checklist
- Correct wallet connected and secured.
- Correct blockchain selected.
- Contract name and token symbol proofread.
- Logo and first media file meet current format and size limits.
- First-upload file type matches your planned collection.
- Supply checked.
- Payout addresses independently verified.
- Creator-earnings enforcement trade-off understood.
- Enough native gas token available.
- Open Collection chosen intentionally instead of Drop.
- Copyright and commercial rights confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create an OpenSea collection without coding?
Yes. OpenSea Studio is designed as a no-code workflow. Advanced generative projects, custom contracts, and complex minting logic may require external technical tools.
Can I create a collection without cryptocurrency?
You can access the workflow without already owning NFTs, but you need the native gas token for contract deployment and minting. The process is not completely free.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan buyers mint directly from an Open Collection?
No. An Open Collection mints items to the creator’s wallet. Use a Drop when collectors must mint from a public or staged sale page.
Can I bulk-upload NFTs?
Not in OpenSea Studio’s Create Collection workflow. Items must be created individually.
Can I create a generative collection inside OpenSea?
OpenSea says Studio does not currently generate a collection automatically from specified traits and rarity. You may need another generation and metadata workflow, a custom contract, or Drop tooling.
Which blockchain is cheapest?
There is no permanent answer. Gas prices and congestion change, and the cheapest network may not be where your audience or preferred marketplaces are active. Compare current costs and compatibility immediately before deployment.
Do creator earnings work on every marketplace?
No. Optional earnings may be ignored by a seller, while enforced earnings work only where the relevant contract mechanism and marketplace support them. Enforcement can reduce compatibility.
Will the collection automatically appear everywhere?
It should be viewable on marketplaces supporting the selected blockchain, but indexing, visibility, and features vary. Verify the contract address and token ID on the chain.
Can I change the contract name later?
No. The on-chain contract name and token symbol cannot be changed after deployment. The OpenSea display name is a separate, editable field.
