AWS remained the world’s largest cloud infrastructure provider in calendar Q2 2026, with an estimated 28% market share. Microsoft Azure followed at 20%, down from approximately 21% in Q1, while Google Cloud rose to 15% from 14%.
The shift was more about momentum than collapse. Synergy Research Group estimated that worldwide spending on cloud infrastructure services reached $143.4 billion in the quarter, up 43% year over year. In a market expanding that quickly, Microsoft could grow Azure revenue and still lose percentage share, while Google could gain share by growing faster than the overall market.

AWS, Microsoft and Google together represented approximately 63% of the global market. Synergy’s Q2 report is available at Synergy Research Group; its Q1 comparison is available here.
What the market-share figures measure
This is not a ranking of every type of cloud-related revenue. Synergy’s category covers enterprise spending on:
- Infrastructure as a service: compute, storage, networking and related infrastructure.
- Platform as a service: managed databases, developer platforms, analytics, integration and similar services.
- Hosted private cloud: private-cloud infrastructure hosted and operated as a service.
The estimate is worldwide and reflects provider revenue estimates, not customer usage, installed capacity, profit, bookings or total corporate cloud revenue. It does not directly represent SaaS subscriptions such as Microsoft 365 or Salesforce, hardware sales, consulting, systems integration, on-premises software or customer-operated private infrastructure.
Microsoft’s share fell—but that does not mean Azure sales fell
“Microsoft drops” is accurate only if it refers to estimated market share: Azure moved from roughly 21% to 20% between Q1 and Q2 2026. It should not be interpreted as a 1% decline in Azure revenue.

Market share is a percentage of a changing total. If the total market grows faster than a provider’s revenue, that provider’s share can decline even while its sales increase substantially. With the market up 43% year over year, this denominator effect is especially important.
Microsoft does not disclose a standalone Azure revenue figure. Its reported results combine Azure with other cloud services. Microsoft’s fiscal Q2 FY2026 results, covering the three months ended December 31, 2025—not calendar Q2 2026—showed Azure and other cloud services revenue growth of 39%. Microsoft also reported $51.5 billion in Microsoft Cloud revenue, up 26%, and $32.9 billion in Intelligent Cloud revenue, up 29%. Those results provide company context, but they are not the direct source of Synergy’s Q2 market-share estimate. See Microsoft’s fiscal Q2 earnings release and Intelligent Cloud results.
Why Google gained ground
Google Cloud’s estimated share rose approximately one percentage point to 15%. It did not overtake Microsoft or AWS, but it grew faster than the market in this quarter’s estimate.

The Synergy result by itself does not prove that one product caused Google’s gain. The safer conclusion is comparative: Synergy said Microsoft and Google achieved substantially higher growth rates than AWS while AWS retained the lead. AI was identified as the primary driver of the recent acceleration, although cloud growth also includes migration, database modernization, security, disaster recovery, developer platforms and hybrid-cloud workloads.
AWS is still the leader—and is still growing
AWS held an estimated 28% share, giving it an approximately eight-point lead over Azure and a 13-point lead over Google Cloud. Its share was broadly unchanged from Q1.
That does not mean AWS stopped growing. Holding the same share of a $143.4 billion quarterly market implies that AWS captured roughly its existing portion of a dramatically larger market. The implied $40.2 billion figure is a mathematical estimate, not AWS-reported revenue, but it illustrates why stable share can coexist with substantial dollar growth.
AWS remains the scale benchmark because of its broad service catalog, large partner ecosystem and mature developer and infrastructure adoption. The competitive risk is longer term: faster-growing rivals are using AI, enterprise relationships and specialized infrastructure to expand their positions. Q2 2026 does not show AWS in immediate danger of losing the lead.

AI is expanding the market—and increasing the cost of competition
Generative AI is creating demand for GPUs, custom accelerators, high-speed networking, storage and data-center capacity. Synergy estimated that the market grew by more than $43 billion from Q2 2025 and that the trailing-twelve-month market had reached approximately $500 billion.
That growth is economically complicated. Providers must fund power, land, networking, data-center construction, accelerator purchases and depreciation. They may also face capacity shortages, long equipment lead times and large customer commitments. Strong AI infrastructure demand therefore does not automatically prove that every workload is profitable or that growth will continue at the same rate.
The remaining 37% of the market is also significant. Synergy identified fast-growing providers including CoreWeave, OpenAI, Oracle, Crusoe, Nebius, Anthropic and Nscale, and said nine neocloud companies were among the top 40 providers. These specialists may be important for particular AI workloads, but they are not interchangeable with the hyperscalers in service breadth, regions or operating model.
What the shift means for cloud buyers
Market share is useful context, not a purchasing recommendation. A provider gaining share is not automatically the best choice for a particular workload.

Evaluate the workload before the logo
- Existing dependencies: identity, databases, operating systems, application interfaces and licensing.
- Data location and movement: regions, residency rules, storage architecture and egress charges.
- AI capacity: accelerator type, quotas, availability, performance and required regions.
- Portability: Kubernetes, open-source compatibility and the cost of moving data or applications.
- Security and compliance: controls, certifications, identity integration and audit requirements.
- Commercial terms: committed-spend discounts, enterprise agreements, support, reservations and price changes.
- Operating capability: internal skills, partner support, observability, governance and incident response.
- Exit costs: data-transfer fees, proprietary services, retraining and the staffing required to operate another platform.
AWS may suit broad infrastructure requirements and AWS-native applications. Azure may be particularly practical for organizations standardized on Microsoft identity, Windows Server, SQL Server, Microsoft 365 and enterprise licensing. Google Cloud may be attractive for analytics, Kubernetes, machine learning and AI infrastructure. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure can be relevant to Oracle database and enterprise application estates, while CoreWeave may fit GPU-heavy workloads after capacity, networking, storage and managed-service coverage are checked.
Official pricing calculators are the right starting point because effective cost depends on workload design. Use the AWS calculator, Azure calculator and Google Cloud calculator. Production cost can differ substantially from advertised free tiers once storage, support, egress, GPUs, committed use and enterprise-contract terms are included.
Important limitations in the comparison
- These are estimates: Synergy’s market shares are modeled estimates, not a single regulatory filing.
- Company categories differ: Azure is reported with “Azure and other cloud services”; Google Cloud includes more than raw infrastructure; AWS’s segment also does not map perfectly to Synergy’s definition.
- Quarters do not align automatically: Synergy’s Q2 is calendar Q2. Microsoft’s fiscal Q2 FY2026 ended December 31, 2025.
- The scope is worldwide: Regional rankings can differ because of local providers, data residency, sovereignty rules, network performance and government procurement.
- Market share does not measure quality: It does not establish reliability, customer satisfaction, profitability, technical superiority or the best fit for a buyer.
For that reason, the figures should be read as directional evidence about scale and momentum rather than as perfectly precise revenue accounting.
Bottom line
Q2 2026 changed the momentum narrative more than the ranking. AWS remained the clear scale leader at an estimated 28% share. Microsoft remained number two but slipped approximately one point to 20%, while Google Cloud gained approximately one point to 15%. The market’s 43% expansion means all three can grow in dollars even as their shares move differently. For cloud strategy, the central question is not simply who is largest, but which provider can deliver the required capacity, economics, services and portability for each workload.
