You generally cannot edit a generated Indian e-way bill to fix a mistake. The official e-Way Bill System FAQ says to cancel the incorrect bill and generate a new one with the correct details. Cancellation must happen within 24 hours of generation, and a bill cannot be cancelled after it has been verified in transit. Part-B is the limited exception: it can be updated, but that does not let you correct other details on the bill.
First, identify which detail is wrong
Compare the generated e-way bill with the underlying invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan, and check it against the consignment that will actually move. Establish whether the problem is in Part-B or in another generated detail, and whether the goods have started moving or the bill has already been verified in transit. Those facts determine whether the ordinary cancellation route may still be available.

The official National Informatics Centre (NIC) e-Way Bill System FAQ draws a firm distinction: generated details cannot be edited or corrected; the stated remedy for an incorrect entry is cancellation and a fresh e-way bill. The FAQ identifies Part-B as updateable, but that is not a general correction facility for the rest of the bill. It states: “If there is a mistake, incorrect or wrong entry in the e-way bill, then it cannot be edited or corrected. Only option is cancellation of eway bill and generate a new one with correct details.”
Start by describing the discrepancy precisely. Is the generated bill inconsistent with the source document, or does the source document itself differ from the consignment that is about to move? Is the issue confined to Part-B, or does it affect another detail already generated on the bill? Note the bill number and generation time, and establish whether anyone has verified it in transit. These checks do not amend the bill; they help determine which official route, if any, remains available.

Part-B issue or other error?
- Part-B: The system FAQ says Part-B can be updated. Use that limited function only for a Part-B update; do not treat it as permission to amend other details.
- Other generated detail: If an invoice, value, party or other generated detail is wrong, the FAQ does not say it can be edited. The ordinary route is cancellation followed by generation of a new bill with the correct information, if cancellation is still permitted.
This distinction matters because an available update to Part-B does not reopen the rest of the bill for editing. If the error affects a detail other than Part-B, do not try to solve it by changing Part-B, adding a note, or asking the recipient to reject the bill. The official FAQ identifies cancellation and fresh generation as the remedy for wrong entries; it does not describe those alternatives as corrections.
Can you cancel the incorrect bill?
Under Rule 138 of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) e-way bill rules, an e-way bill may be cancelled electronically within 24 hours of generation where the goods are not being transported or are not being transported according to the details furnished in the bill. The rule bars cancellation once the e-way bill has been verified in transit. The system FAQ likewise gives cancellation and fresh generation as the route for wrong information.
Rule 138 says that an eligible bill may be cancelled electronically on the common portal, either directly or through a Facilitation Centre notified by the Commissioner. Its wording makes both the time limit and the circumstances important: cancellation is within 24 hours, and the rule addresses goods that are not being transported or are not being transported as described in the bill. Do not treat the 24-hour period as an unconditional right to cancel in every situation.
Check the recorded generation time and act promptly. The 24-hour period runs from generation, not from when someone notices the error. The key checks are whether that period remains open, whether the bill has been verified in transit, and whether the actual movement matches the bill. Do not assume that an incorrect bill remains cancellable just because the goods have not arrived at their destination.
| Situation | What the official material establishes | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Within 24 hours, not verified in transit | Rule 138 permits cancellation when goods are not being transported or are not being transported as described in the bill. The FAQ identifies cancellation and fresh generation for incorrect entries. | If the facts meet the rule, have the generator cancel the bill and create a new one with correct details if movement requires it. |
| More than 24 hours since generation | The cited FAQ and Rule 138 establish the 24-hour cancellation window; they do not establish a general post-deadline correction or cancellation exception. | Seek case-specific guidance from the relevant GST authority or official help desk, or a qualified GST professional. Do not assume a workaround is valid. |
| Verified in transit | Rule 138 says the e-way bill cannot be cancelled after it has been verified in transit. | Escalate promptly for case-specific direction. Do not represent cancellation or a replacement bill as available through the ordinary process. |
| Only a Part-B update is needed | The FAQ identifies Part-B as updateable; it does not extend this to other generated details. | Use the permitted Part-B update for that issue. For a different error, assess the cancellation rules instead. |
Use the facts to choose the next step
Think of the decision as two separate questions. First, what kind of detail is wrong? If it is only a Part-B issue, the FAQ identifies a limited update function. If it is another generated detail, the FAQ says the bill cannot be edited and points to cancellation and a new bill. Second, is cancellation still potentially available under Rule 138? Check the generation time, whether transit verification has occurred, and whether the goods are being transported as described.
If the facts do not fit the ordinary cancellation conditions, do not force them into that route. For example, a bill that is already verified in transit is barred from cancellation under Rule 138, even if an error has since been discovered. Likewise, if more than 24 hours have passed, the official materials cited here do not establish a general exception. In either case, seek guidance specific to the facts rather than relying on an assumed correction method.

How to cancel and replace a wrong bill
1. Reconcile the bill with the source documents
Confirm exactly what is wrong using the invoice, bill of sale or delivery challan and the actual consignment details. Identify whether a correction is needed in Part-B alone or in some other generated detail. This prevents treating an update to one limited section as a correction to the entire bill.
Keep the comparison concrete: note which generated detail differs, what the source document says, and what the consignment details show. If the source document and the intended movement do not agree with each other, do not guess which version to enter on a new bill. Resolve the underlying discrepancy first so the replacement bill, if one is required and permitted, reflects the correct information.
2. Check the deadline and transit-verification status
Record the bill’s generation time and check whether 24 hours have elapsed. Also establish whether the bill has been verified in transit. Rule 138 does not permit cancellation after that verification. If the deadline has passed or verification has occurred, do not rely on the ordinary cancellation route; go directly to case-specific escalation.
Do not calculate the window from the time the error was reported internally, discovered by the recipient, or noticed by the person arranging transport. The relevant time stated in the rule and FAQ is generation. When the window is close to expiring, promptly confirm the facts and involve the generator rather than delaying while trying informal fixes.
3. Ask the generator to cancel, if eligible
The official cancellation API documentation describes cancellation as an action by the generator within 24 hours. It shows a cancellation request using the e-way bill number and a reason code, with an optional remark. The API documentation does not establish a current click-by-click portal path, so do not rely on an assumed screen name or menu sequence. Use the current official e-Way Bill System process available to the generator.

The generator is the relevant actor described in that API material; the recipient’s acceptance or rejection is not presented as a substitute. Before proceeding, confirm that the bill number is correct and that the reason selected accurately describes the situation. The optional remark in the API example is not evidence of a general annotation-based correction process. Follow the current system instructions rather than relying on an old screen sequence or a guessed procedure.

4. Generate a fresh bill with the corrected details
If the wrong bill is cancelled and the goods’ movement requires an e-way bill, generate a new bill using the correct information. Recheck it against the source document and actual consignment before movement proceeds. The system FAQ names cancellation and fresh generation as the remedy; it does not say that changing the cancelled bill itself is possible.
Compare the replacement bill with the source documents and the consignment once more before relying on it for movement. Confirm that the bill is the new one and that its details correspond to the intended movement. This final check is especially useful after a rushed cancellation, when there is a risk of carrying forward the same incorrect entry into the replacement.
5. Make sure movement has the required valid bill
The e-Way Bill System FAQ says goods in movement should be accompanied by a valid e-way bill where one is required. The person in charge should have the valid bill for the movement. If goods are already moving under incorrect details, seek direction promptly rather than assuming a newly generated bill automatically cures the earlier record or the movement already underway.

A bill may have been cancelled or a new one may have been generated, but that does not establish that any earlier movement under incorrect details has been resolved. The official materials cited here do not say that replacement automatically cures an earlier record. For goods already moving, explain their current status when seeking help and ask what to do for that specific situation.
What if 24 hours have passed or the goods are already moving?
The official materials cited here do not set out a general post-24-hour correction exception or a special process that automatically resolves an incorrect bill already verified in transit. They also do not establish that rejection, an informal note, or simply creating another bill cures the problem. Avoid treating any of those as a substitute for an authorized resolution.
Contact the relevant GST authority or the official e-Way Bill System help desk, whose support contacts are published on the system site, and explain the facts accurately. A qualified GST professional can help assess the specific circumstances. Have the e-way bill number, generation time, exact error, source document, transit and verification status, and current goods location available. Ask what action is appropriate for that particular case; do not describe an unverified workaround as an official correction procedure.

When you contact support, distinguish what you know from what you are asking. State whether the bill is within or beyond the 24-hour window; whether transit verification has occurred; whether goods have started moving; and whether the mistake is in Part-B or another generated detail. Provide the source document and the actual consignment details so the authority or professional can assess the specific facts. The published help desk contacts are a route to ask for direction, not a guarantee of a particular outcome or an extension.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does recipient rejection correct the bill?
No correction effect is established for recipient rejection in the official material cited here. The FAQ discusses the recipient’s ability to communicate acceptance or rejection and gives a 72-hour response period, but it does not say that rejection edits the bill or replaces the generator’s cancellation process. Treat recipient response and correction of a generated error as separate matters.
The 72-hour period concerns the recipient’s response, not the cancellation window. It does not extend the 24-hour period for cancellation under Rule 138, and rejection is not described as a way to amend a generated entry. If the bill contains a mistake, apply the correction decision separately: determine whether the issue is Part-B, assess cancellation eligibility, and escalate if the ordinary route is unavailable.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to edit a general bill detail: The FAQ says generated details cannot be edited or corrected. Part-B is a limited update function, not a way to revise the rest of the bill.
- Waiting to assess the 24-hour window: The cancellation period is measured from generation. Check the recorded time as soon as an error is found.
- Assuming a bill can be cancelled after transit verification: Rule 138 bars cancellation after verification in transit.
- Confusing recipient rejection with cancellation: The stated recipient response period is not identified as a correction mechanism.
- Assuming a replacement bill fixes an earlier movement: The cited official material does not establish that a new bill automatically cures an old or already verified record. Escalate unusual or in-progress cases.
- Treating the 24-hour window as the only condition: Rule 138 also describes the circumstances in which cancellation may occur and bars it after transit verification.
- Assuming the API example is a portal walkthrough: The cancellation API material gives request information, not a current screen-by-screen user guide.
- Using an optional remark as a workaround: The API’s optional remark does not establish a general method for correcting generated details by annotation.

Can an e-way bill be edited after generation?
Not to correct general generated details. The NIC e-Way Bill System FAQ says the bill cannot be edited or corrected; its stated route is cancellation and a new bill with correct details, if cancellation is permitted. Part-B is the limited exception identified as updateable.

How do I cancel a wrong e-way bill?
First confirm the exact error, generation time and transit-verification status. If cancellation is still available under Rule 138, the generator cancels the bill through the official system within 24 hours, then generates a fresh bill with correct details if movement requires one. The official API material describes a request with the bill number and reason code, and an optional remark; it is not a click-by-click portal guide.
What if 24 hours have passed?
The official materials cited here do not establish a general post-24-hour correction or cancellation exception. Contact the relevant GST authority or e-Way Bill System help desk, or a qualified GST professional, for case-specific direction. Do not assume a replacement bill or informal annotation cures the earlier record.
Can I cancel an e-way bill after it has been verified in transit?
No. CBIC Rule 138 bars cancellation after the e-way bill has been verified in transit. Escalate promptly for case-specific guidance rather than treating ordinary cancellation as available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes recipient rejection correct a wrong e-way bill?
No correction effect is established for rejection. The FAQ discusses acceptance or rejection and a 72-hour recipient response period, but does not say rejection edits the bill or replaces the generator’s cancellation process.
What if the only problem is in Part-B?
The NIC FAQ identifies Part-B as updateable. That limited update does not allow changes to other generated details, such as invoice, value or party information.
The Bottom Line
A generated e-way bill generally cannot be edited to correct an error. Part-B can be updated, but for other wrong details the official route is cancellation and a fresh bill, if the facts qualify and cancellation is within 24 hours of generation. A bill verified in transit cannot be cancelled. If the time window has passed or goods are already moving under incorrect details, seek case-specific guidance from the relevant GST authority, the official help desk or a qualified GST professional.
