To convert a percent to a decimal, divide the number before the percent sign by 100. For example, 35% becomes 0.35 because 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35. The quick alternative is to move the decimal point two places to the left and remove the percent sign.
Convert a percent by dividing by 100
“Percent” means “per 100.” A percentage therefore represents a number of hundredths: 75% means 75 out of 100, or 75/100, which is 0.75. Dividing by 100 expresses that same value as a decimal.
Rule: percent value ÷ 100 = decimal equivalent.
For example, 60% = 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6, and 25% = 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25. Percentages, fractions and decimals are different ways to represent the same quantity. [The Open University; The Open University]
Use the decimal-point shortcut
Dividing by 100 is equivalent to moving the decimal point two places to the left. Remove the percent sign afterward. If the number is written without a decimal point, treat it as though it ends in .0; use zeros as placeholders when needed.

- 75% → 0.75
- 6% → 0.06
- 5.2% → 0.052
- 0.1% → 0.001
For instance, 6% can be written as 6.0%; moving the point left twice gives 0.06. With 0.1%, the point moves left twice through a placeholder zero, giving 0.001. [The Open University; Portland Community College]
Handle decimal percentages and percentages over 100
The same divide-by-100 rule works whether the percent contains decimal digits or is greater than 100. The resulting decimal does not always have to be between 0 and 1.

- 5.2% = 5.2 ÷ 100 = 0.052
- 0.1% = 0.1 ÷ 100 = 0.001
- 200% = 200 ÷ 100 = 2
So a result above 1 is correct when the original percentage is above 100%. [Portland Community College]
