After you authorize through Kite’s login flow, Claude can retrieve selected account and market information. Zerodha’s hosted support documentation describes the integration as read-only, except for GTT orders.
What Kite MCP does
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the connection layer between Claude and selected Zerodha Kite services. It lets Claude call tools that retrieve information such as holdings, positions, margins, orders, quotes and historical data. This is a live tool connection—not Claude being trained on your portfolio and not general access to your computer.

Zerodha’s overview is available at its Kite MCP product page. The hosted service is built on Kite Connect APIs, but avoids the need to write and maintain your own integration.

- An active Zerodha/Kite account.
- Claude Desktop on macOS or Windows.
- Node.js, preferably the current LTS release, installed from nodejs.org.
- Internet access and permission to complete Zerodha’s browser-based authentication flow.
- A current Claude Desktop release with MCP settings under Settings → Developer. Labels can vary slightly between releases.
Zerodha also lists Cursor, Visual Studio Code, Windsurf and Claude CLI on Linux among supported clients, but the steps below focus on Claude Desktop.

Connect Zerodha Kite to Claude Desktop
1. Install and verify Node.js
Download the current LTS installer from the official Node.js website. Then open Terminal on macOS or Command Prompt/PowerShell on Windows and run:
node --version
npx --versionBoth commands should return version numbers. The documented Claude configuration invokes npx mcp-remote, so Node.js and npx must be available in the same user environment that runs Claude Desktop.
2. Open Claude’s MCP configuration
- Open Claude Desktop.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Developer.
- Click Edit Config.
This is the current documented route from Zerodha. If your Claude version uses different wording, look for the Developer or MCP configuration controls rather than guessing a file location.
3. Add the hosted Kite server
Add this entry to the configuration:

4. Save and fully restart Claude
Save the configuration, quit Claude Desktop completely, and reopen it. Closing only the conversation window may leave the background application running, so a full quit and relaunch is preferable.
5. Authorize Kite
Open a Claude conversation and select the tools or hammer icon. Kite tools should appear after the MCP server starts. Choose the Kite tool or follow the authorization prompt, then complete the Zerodha login and requested two-factor authentication in the external browser flow.

Zerodha says authentication happens through Kite and that Kite credentials are not passed through Claude. That is a security feature, but it is not a guarantee against every possible browser, client or account-security risk.
6. Test with a read-only request
Start with a harmless prompt such as:
Show my current holdings and quantities.Other useful verification prompts include:
What are my current open positions and their unrealized P&L?Show the latest available price for NSE:INFY.
Compare important results with the Kite app or website. Claude may miscalculate or misinterpret a correct tool response.

The official Kite MCP repository lists implementation names including get_quotes, get_ltp, get_ohlc, get_historical_data, get_holdings, get_positions, get_margins, get_orders, get_trades, get_gtts and GTT actions. The repository’s list is implementation documentation, not a promise that every tool appears identically in every hosted release.

Prompts that produce clearer results
List my holdings with quantity, average price, last price and current P&L.
Which holdings represent more than 10% of my portfolio by current value?
Show my open positions and separate intraday from overnight positions if the data supports that distinction.
Fetch the latest available OHLC data for NSE:RELIANCE and explain the time period.
Review my realized and unrealized P&L, but do not recommend a trade.For market-data questions, specify the exchange and symbol, time period, and whether you mean holdings, positions, orders or transactions. Ask Claude to identify whether a value is live, delayed or last available, and whether fees and taxes are included.
Can Claude place Zerodha buy and sell orders?
Do not assume that the hosted integration can place normal orders. Zerodha’s current support documentation describes hosted Kite MCP as read-only, with GTT orders as the stated exception. It should not be described as an autonomous buy-and-sell trading terminal.
The repository can list broader order-management operations, including ordinary order placement, modification and cancellation. That refers to a possible self-hosted implementation path, not proof that those permissions are enabled at https://mcp.kite.trade/mcp.
For automated strategies or direct order execution, evaluate Kite Connect and its API documentation. That route requires application credentials, authentication, hosting and independent security controls. Claude’s output is also not regulated personalized investment advice or a broker confirmation.

Hosted versus self-hosted Kite MCP
Hosted setup
The hosted endpoint is the best fit for most existing Zerodha customers who want conversational portfolio and market-data access.
- No custom server deployment.
- No user-created API key or secret required for the documented setup.
- Fastest installation.
- Officially documented by Zerodha.
- Less control over server behavior and available permissions.
Zerodha says Kite MCP is available without an additional MCP charge. Claude usage may still depend on your Claude plan and limits.
Self-hosted setup
Self-hosting is for developers who need source visibility, local deployment or custom behavior. The repository lists Go 1.21 or later and valid Kite Connect credentials as prerequisites. Its basic flow is:

Kite Connect warns users not to expose API secrets or access tokens. Self-hosting also introduces callback, patching, network-exposure and potentially broader trading-permission risks.

If you use another client
Zerodha lists Cursor, Visual Studio Code, Windsurf and Claude CLI on Linux as alternatives. Configuration differs by client. For example, Zerodha’s VS Code configuration uses:

}Zerodha distinguishes official Claude CLI support on Linux from unofficial Claude Desktop Linux builds. Do not treat an unofficial package as supported by Zerodha or Anthropic merely because it can run Claude Desktop.
Troubleshooting
Kite does not appear in Claude
- Check the JSON for missing quotes, braces or commas.
- Confirm the entry is inside
mcpServers. - Run
node --versionandnpx --version. - Quit Claude completely and reopen it.
- Return to Settings → Developer → Edit Config instead of guessing the configuration path.
- Temporarily remove unrelated MCP entries to isolate a conflict, then restore them.
npx or mcp-remote cannot be found
If Node works but npx does not, reinstall Node.js using the official installer or correct the system PATH. Do not substitute an unverified third-party package for the documented command.
The authentication window does not open
Click the tools icon again, restart Claude, check for a blocked browser tab or pop-up, and complete authorization in the same browser session. Temporarily disable extensions that interfere with authentication if necessary. Never type Kite credentials into a Claude message.
“Session not found” or authorization errors
The authorization may have expired, the login window may have been closed, the Kite session may have been invalidated, or Claude may be using a stale MCP process. Restart Claude, reopen the Kite tool and authorize again. If necessary, remove and re-add the server entry. Check Zerodha’s official support or status channels before installing an unofficial server.
For direct Kite Connect integrations, access tokens are session-based and under the documented API flow expire at 6 a.m. the following day unless invalidated earlier. The hosted MCP flow may manage sessions differently.
The returned data looks stale or unexpected
Ask Claude to identify the exact tool, timestamp or last-available time, exchange and instrument symbol, and whether the result came from holdings, positions, orders or market data. Distinguish broker-reported values from Claude’s calculations. Zerodha describes the service as providing real-time access, but critical prices and balances should still be checked in Kite before acting.

Security checklist
- Never paste a Kite password, OTP, API secret or access token into Claude.
- Confirm the browser address and login destination before authorizing.
- Use Zerodha’s official hosted endpoint or carefully review any self-hosted code.
- Review the tools shown in Claude before approving an unfamiliar action.
- Do not upload screenshots showing client IDs, account numbers, balances or personal details.
- Remove the Kite entry from Claude’s configuration when you no longer need it.
- If you suspect misuse, revoke or unlink access through the relevant Zerodha/Kite account-security controls.
Final verification checklist
- Kite appears under Claude’s available tools.
- The external Kite authorization completed successfully.
- A holdings or positions query returns expected data.
- You did not share credentials or secrets in chat or configuration.
- You understand that hosted Kite MCP is read-only except for GTT orders according to Zerodha’s support documentation.
- You will verify important data in Kite before making financial decisions.
For occasional portfolio checks, the hosted integration is the simplest route. Developers who need custom analytics or automated execution should treat Kite Connect and self-hosted MCP as a separate engineering project—not as an automatic upgrade to the hosted Claude connection.
