To connect a bank account to an RBI-regulated Account Aggregator (AA), sign up or sign in to an AA app, select your bank, provide the identifier it uses to find your account, and complete the bank’s ownership check—described by Sahamati as an OTP verification. Linking makes the account available for a later, separate consent decision; it does not automatically authorize a lender or other service to access your data.
What an Account Aggregator does
An Account Aggregator is a regulated consent manager in India’s financial data-sharing framework. A bank holding your account information can act as a Financial Information Provider (FIP); a regulated lender or other financial service requesting information can act as a Financial Information User (FIU). The AA manages the consent and transfer between them. The framework was introduced through the Reserve Bank of India’s NBFC-Account Aggregator Directions, 2016, dated 2 September 2016, and participation is voluntary for consumers. See the Department of Financial Services’ explanation.
You can open an AA app directly or reach an AA consent flow while using a financial service. You do not have to link an account when you first register. Each AA has its own app and login, so an account with one AA does not automatically sign you in to another.
Connect your bank account
- Choose an AA app. Use an AA available to you and check whether it is connected to your bank. Bank connectivity can differ by AA.
- Register or sign in. Complete the app’s sign-up or login. Registration alone does not require you to link a bank account.
- Select your bank. In the app’s account-linking flow, choose the financial institution where the account is held.
- Enter the requested identifier. The bank or FIP uses an identifier to find your account. Examples listed by Sahamati include a verified mobile number, PAN, FIP Customer ID or Customer Registration Number. The required identifier is institution-specific, so follow the field shown for your bank rather than assuming one detail works everywhere. See Sahamati’s Account Aggregator FAQ.
- Complete the ownership check. Sahamati describes the FIP sending an OTP to verify that you own the account. Enter it in the bank/FIP verification step presented by the app. Screens and OTP delivery details may vary.
The app should not need your bank password, PIN or card details for this linking flow. Sahamati explains that AA sharing avoids giving login credentials to third parties; the described process uses an institution-specific identifier and OTP verification.

Review consent before any data is shared
Account linking and data sharing are separate decisions. When an FIU requests information, review the consent request before approving it. Check:
- which FIU will receive the information;
- the stated purpose of the request;
- the type of financial information requested; and
- the consent’s validity period or expiry.
The Department of Financial Services states: “No financial information of the customer is retrieved, shared or transferred by AA framework without the explicit consent of the customer.” Consent is governed by the request’s consent artefact under the RBI Directions.

Manage or revoke consent
Sahamati says the AA app shows active and revoked consents and FIU data-request history, and lets customers revoke AA consent. Use the consent controls in the app to review requests or withdraw consent when appropriate. Revocation controls your AA consent; it should not be read as a promise that information already received by another participant is erased.
Sahamati also says data transmitted through the AA is encrypted and that the AA is not allowed to view, store, process or sell the customer’s transmitted data. This describes the AA’s role and restrictions; it is not a blanket claim about every other participant’s handling or retention of information.

If your bank does not appear
Do not assume every bank is connected to every AA. Sahamati says FIP integration with AAs is still scaling and that many FIPs initially went live with one or two AAs. Check the current FIP-AA mapping referenced in Sahamati’s FAQ, or try an AA connected to your bank. If the bank is absent from the AA you are using, you may need to wait for connectivity or use a connected AA rather than repeat the same linking attempt.

The Department of Financial Services reported, attributing the figures to Sahamati, that as of 31 March 2026 there were 179 financial institutions live as FIPs and 989 live as FIUs; more than 2.88 billion financial accounts were enabled to share data and 284.6 million accounts had been linked by users. These ecosystem totals do not guarantee that a particular bank is available in every AA.
