The right way to compare Titan with listed jewellery and watch companies is to separate its businesses, align each issuer’s accounting scope and reporting period, compare operating quality and per-share results, and only then apply valuation multiples using prices from the same date. Titan Company Limited is a diversified group, not a pure-play jeweller or watchmaker. Its FY2025–26 reporting covers jewellery, watches, eyewear, fragrances and women’s bags, Indian dress wear, and engineering and automation activities. A comparison that uses Titan’s group totals against a single-business jeweller can therefore produce a misleading conclusion.
This framework shows how to build a defensible peer set, normalize the numbers, interpret Titan and Kalyan Jewellers’ reported figures, and prepare a current valuation comparison without turning historical growth into a buy or sell call.

Start by defining what you are comparing
Write the comparison question before collecting numbers. “Is Titan’s jewellery business growing faster than a listed jeweller?” requires segment-level jewellery data. “How diversified and profitable is Titan as a group?” requires consolidated company figures. “Which watch company has the stronger economics?” requires Titan’s watch division and peers that disclose watch-focused results.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
These are different exercises. A group-to-group comparison can be appropriate when both companies have similar business mixes. A segment-to-company comparison is not: Titan’s consolidated revenue includes activities that a jewellery-focused issuer does not have.

Classify each issuer by business scope
| Question to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What products and services does the group sell? | Jewellery, watches, eyewear, fashion, engineering and other activities have different margins, capital needs and demand drivers. |
| Which segment is relevant to the question? | Use Titan’s jewellery or watches disclosure when the peer is a focused operator; use group figures only for a genuinely diversified comparison. |
| What geography is covered? | India, international stores and franchises are exposed to different currencies, regulations and consumer cycles. |
| What is the sales format? | Retail stores, wholesale, franchise, e-commerce and marketplaces change revenue recognition, working capital and store economics. |
| Are numbers standalone or consolidated? | Consolidated statements include subsidiaries and may include acquisitions that are absent from standalone accounts. |
| What fiscal year and report date are used? | Periods must overlap before growth, margins and cash flow are compared. |
Kalyan Jewellers is a more direct operating reference for jewellery than Titan’s entire group because Kalyan reports one jewellery segment. It still differs in brand portfolio, geography, store format, scale and accounting presentation. Treat it as a useful peer, not as a perfectly interchangeable company.
Build a peer set that matches the business
Jewellery comparison
For a jewellery question, begin with listed jewellery-focused issuers such as Kalyan Jewellers. Record whether the company sells gold, diamonds and other categories, and whether bullion, digital gold or wholesale transactions are included in reported revenue. Compare store formats, domestic and international exposure, franchise mix and customer proposition before interpreting growth.
Watch comparison
Isolate Titan’s watches division. A diversified consumer company that happens to sell watches is not automatically a direct watch peer. Include a company only if it discloses watch-focused revenue, margins or other economics that can be matched to Titan’s segment. If it does not, mark the comparison as qualitative rather than constructing a false precision from group numbers.

- List the exchange listing and legal issuer name.
- Note the latest audited fiscal year and the date of the results release.
- Map operating segments and identify the segment that answers your question.
- Record India and international revenue exposure.
- Classify retail, wholesale, franchise and online channels.
- Choose consolidated or standalone statements and use that choice for every company in the table.
- Flag acquisitions, disposals, exceptional items and accounting changes that affect comparability.
The available issuer material supports Kalyan as a jewellery peer but does not establish a complete list of listed watch or jewellery comparables. A final peer universe should therefore be documented rather than implied.
Align reporting periods and accounting definitions
Use the same fiscal period wherever possible, normally the year ended 31 March for Indian issuers. If one company reports a calendar year, explain the mismatch and avoid presenting the figures as if they were simultaneous. Use audited annual statements for the primary comparison and quarterly releases only for a clearly labelled update.
Revenue is not always the same measure
Check whether an issuer reports revenue from operations, total income, gross merchandise value or another non-statutory measure. Titan’s Q4FY26 result release states that its total-income measure excludes bullion and Digi-gold sales and that profit is before exceptional items. Those quarterly figures must not be silently combined with statutory annual revenue or with a peer’s measure that includes those activities. Profit and margin definitions
“Operating profit” may mean EBITDA, EBIT, profit before exceptional items or another issuer-defined subtotal. Copy the reported definition and, if you calculate a margin, divide by the matching revenue measure. Do not compare Titan’s profit before exceptional items with a peer’s reported profit after exceptional items without an adjustment or explanation.
Standalone versus consolidated statements
Use consolidated statements when the investment is in the listed group and subsidiaries materially contribute to sales or profit. Use standalone statements only when the question concerns the parent entity and the peer’s equivalent data are available. Mixing bases can make a subsidiary’s revenue appear to be missing or double-counted.
Keep Titan’s jewellery, watches and group results separate
Titan’s FY2025–26 annual report gives the following issuer-reported figures:
| Reported item | FY2025–26 figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Jewellery revenue | ₹61,148 crore | Excludes ₹9,960 crore of bullion sales. |
| Watches revenue | ₹5,233 crore | Annual watches division revenue. |
| Total revenue from operations | Growth of 41% | Group-level annual growth reported by Titan. |
| Net profit | ₹4,630 crore | Group-level annual net profit. |
| Watches revenue growth | 14% year on year | Annual watches division growth. |
The annual report is available at Titan Company Limited Annual Report 2025–26. The jewellery figure cannot be treated as Titan’s total company revenue, and the watches figure cannot be compared with a peer’s group sales unless the peer has a similar business mix.
Titan’s Q4FY26 release also says that Damas consolidation began in Q4FY26. That acquisition-related change can affect year-over-year international jewellery comparisons. Identify the contribution from the changed perimeter before attributing all reported growth to like-for-like trading.

Use Kalyan’s figures as orientation, not a direct scorecard
Kalyan Jewellers’ FY26 audited consolidated results and annual-results release report consolidated revenue of ₹35,743 crore and profit after tax of ₹1,350 crore, with reported growth of 43% and 86%, respectively. The figures come from a jewellery-focused group and therefore provide operating context for Titan’s jewellery business, but they do not have the same scope as Titan’s group totals or Titan’s jewellery figure excluding bullion.
Sources: Kalyan audited consolidated financial results for the year ended 31 March 2026 and the FY26 annual results press release dated 8 May 2026.
| Issuer figure | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Titan: ₹61,148 crore jewellery revenue, excluding bullion | Scale of the disclosed jewellery business. | That Titan is more profitable or cheaper than a peer. |
| Titan: ₹5,233 crore watches revenue | Scale and basis for a watch-division comparison. | Watch-segment margin or return unless those are disclosed on the same basis. |
| Kalyan: ₹35,743 crore consolidated revenue | Scale of a jewellery-focused group. | A like-for-like comparison with Titan’s group revenue. |
| Kalyan: ₹1,350 crore consolidated PAT | Bottom-line outcome for its reported scope. | Relative profitability without aligned exceptional items, share counts and revenue definitions. |
Kalyan’s FY25 annual report identifies a one-time inventory impact of about ₹1,240 million associated with a mid-year import-duty reduction on gold. Check the audited notes before deciding whether an adjustment is appropriate; do not simply add the amount back to earnings without understanding the accounting treatment. The annual report is at Kalyan Jewellers Annual Report 2024–25.

Gold-price inflation can raise reported jewellery revenue even when physical volumes are flat or declining. Store additions, acquisitions and mix changes can also lift sales without improving mature-store economics. Ask management for the decomposition of price, volume, same-store sales, new stores, acquisitions and currency effects; if no comparable breakdown is supplied, label the gap.
Growth and sales quality
- Revenue growth for the same fiscal period and reporting scope.
- Same-store sales growth, with each issuer’s maturity definition.
- Volume growth versus gold-price or other commodity-price effects.
- Organic growth versus acquisition and consolidation effects.
- Store additions, closures and geographic mix.
- Online and omnichannel contribution where disclosed.
Margins and profitability
- Gross margin, with inventory and bullion treatment stated.
- EBITDA or operating margin using each issuer’s published definition.
- EBIT and net profit margins after depreciation, finance costs and taxes.
- Return on invested capital or capital employed, calculated with consistent numerator and denominator choices.
- Margin movement explained by product mix, gold prices, promotions, rent and employee costs.
Cash, capital and balance sheet
- Cash flow from operations and conversion of operating profit into cash.
- Inventory days and the working-capital funding required for gold and finished goods.
- Receivables, payables, customer advances and any bullion-related balances.
- Capital expenditure, store payback and maintenance requirements.
- Net debt, interest cost, lease liabilities and available liquidity.
A retailer can report rapid sales growth while consuming cash through inventory or store expansion. Conversely, a temporary working-capital release can make one year’s cash flow look unusually strong. Read the cash-flow statement and notes alongside the income statement.
Make per-share analysis a separate step
Total-company profit growth does not automatically create the same growth for each shareholder. Compare diluted earnings per share, diluted share counts and any equity issuance, conversion or employee-plan dilution. Use the weighted-average diluted share count for earnings-per-share analysis and the period-end diluted count when calculating a market capitalization at a specific date.

Do not describe a faster-growing company as delivering a better investment return until you compare the share price paid, dilution, dividends and the valuation multiple at entry and exit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle gold prices, inventory and exceptional items explicitly
Gold-price volatility affects the rupee value of sales, customer demand, inventory carrying values and gross margins. A high-price year can produce strong revenue growth while volumes are weaker. Compare physical or weight-based indicators when disclosed and identify whether management attributes growth to price, volume or mix.
Review hedging policies, inventory valuation, metal loans, customer advances and bullion transactions in the notes. The same gold-price move can have different reported effects because companies use different procurement, hedging and inventory practices.
Mark exceptional and non-recurring items in a separate column. Titan’s quarterly release specifies profit before exceptional items for its stated measure. Kalyan’s reported inventory impact linked to the import-duty change is a reminder that a single period may contain unusual effects. Present statutory profit first, then any clearly explained adjusted measure, with the adjustment and source visible.
Compare store economics, not just store counts
Net store additions are an expansion input, not proof of profitable growth. For each retailer, seek mature-store sales, sales per square foot or per store, rent and lease costs, gross margin by format, staffing costs and the disclosed payback period. A fast-growing network can have lower returns if new locations take longer to mature or require heavier leases.

Store-expansion checklist
- Opening and closing stores during the period.
- Owned, franchised and partner-operated locations.
- Average age of the store base.
- Sales productivity and mature-store growth.
- Lease liabilities and occupancy costs.
- Capital cost per opening and management’s stated payback.
- International stores and currency exposure.
Use the same store definition across issuers. “Store count” can include kiosks, shop-in-shop counters, franchises or temporary locations, so a raw count is not a comparable productivity metric.
Construct a same-date valuation comparison
Valuation is the final step, not the starting point. Market prices and multiples change daily, and the supplied issuer materials do not provide a same-date comparative quote or valuation dataset. Refresh market data immediately before publication and label the exact date and time zone.
Collect the market inputs
- Record the closing share price from the same trading date for every issuer.
- Use the period-end or latest appropriate diluted share count and state the choice.
- Calculate market capitalization as share price multiplied by the selected diluted share count.
- Collect cash, borrowings and lease liabilities from the latest balance sheet.
- Calculate enterprise value using a consistent treatment of lease liabilities and other debt-like items.
- Match each market value to trailing financial results or clearly labelled forward estimates.
Use consistent multiples
| Measure | Formula | Best use and warning |
|---|---|---|
| Price/earnings | Share price ÷ diluted EPS, or market capitalization ÷ net profit | Use trailing results or label forward estimates; normalize exceptional items consistently. |
| EV/EBITDA | Enterprise value ÷ EBITDA | Align lease, depreciation and other accounting adjustments. |
| EV/EBIT | Enterprise value ÷ EBIT | Useful when depreciation differs because of store age or acquisition accounting. |
| Price/sales | Market capitalization ÷ revenue | Secondary measure for low-margin retail; revenue definitions must match. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow ÷ market capitalization | State how capital expenditure and working-capital movements are treated. |
Do not call one stock “cheaper” because its historical P/E is lower. A lower multiple may reflect slower growth, weaker margins, higher leverage, greater capital needs, governance or execution risk, or a different accounting scope. A higher multiple may embed expectations that are difficult to achieve. The comparison should explain what the market price appears to discount, not declare a winner without a complete, contemporaneous dataset.
Separate reported facts from management outlook
Historical results are issuer-reported outcomes; forecasts and strategic explanations are management’s views. Titan Watches CEO Kuruvilla Markose wrote in the FY2025–26 annual report: “The next phase for the Watches Division is about building on this momentum through innovation, stronger storytelling, specialised retail, and deeper horological expertise, so that India can emerge as a more meaningful voice in the world of watchmaking.” Attribute this statement to the CEO rather than presenting it as an independently established forecast.
When management cites premiumization, brand investment, store expansion or international growth, test the claim against disclosed sales, margins, cash flow, store productivity and returns. Keep assumptions, guidance and realized results in separate rows in your model.
A practical worksheet for your comparison
| Block | Fields to fill for every issuer |
|---|---|
| Identity | Exchange, ticker, fiscal year-end, report date, consolidated or standalone basis. |
| Scope | Segments, geography, retail/wholesale mix, bullion or digital-gold inclusion, acquisitions. |
| Growth | Revenue, same-store sales, volume, price, store additions, organic and acquired growth. |
| Profitability | Gross margin, EBITDA, EBIT, net profit, exceptional items and diluted EPS. |
| Cash and capital | Operating cash flow, inventory days, working capital, capex, lease liabilities and net debt. |
| Per-share data | Basic and diluted shares, diluted EPS and dividends per share. |
| Valuation date | Share price date, market capitalization, cash, borrowings, enterprise value and selected multiples. |
| Risks | Gold prices, currency, regulation, inventory, execution, governance and accounting changes. |
Attach the source and page or note reference to every non-obvious figure. If a field is not disclosed on a comparable basis, write “not stated” and explain why it limits the comparison rather than estimating it.
Interpretation checklist before drawing a conclusion
- Are you comparing Titan’s relevant segment rather than automatically using its group total?
- Do all revenue and profit figures cover the same period and accounting scope?
- Are bullion, Digi-gold, exceptional items and acquisitions treated consistently?
- Have you separated gold-price effects from volume and store-driven growth?
- Do margins convert into operating cash after inventory and capital expenditure?
- Have you checked diluted EPS and share-count changes?
- Are store additions supported by productivity and payback evidence?
- Were all prices and balance-sheet inputs captured on one clearly labelled date?
- Are management forecasts identified as expectations rather than facts?
If any answer is no, present the result as an incomplete comparison and identify the missing evidence. That is more useful than forcing a ranking from mismatched numbers.
