Re:

Blue Dart vs other courier stocks: what investors should compare

Blue Dart is a focused express carrier, while Delhivery and TCI include broader logistics activities. This guide explains the periods, metrics, definitions and valuation checks investors need for a fair comparison.

Compare courier stocks by business scope first, then by growth, profitability, cash generation, network economics, customer exposure, and valuation. Blue Dart is a relatively focused express-delivery business, while companies such as Delhivery and TCI include broader logistics activities. A higher or lower headline revenue number therefore does not, by itself, identify the better investment.

The figures available for these companies also come from different fiscal periods and use different shipment definitions. The practical approach is to define a peer set, rebuild a same-period comparison from filings, and only then assess valuation and risk. This is an analytical framework, not a buy or sell recommendation.

Start by defining what counts as a peer

“Courier stock” can describe several very different listed businesses. A focused express carrier may earn most of its revenue from time-definite parcel delivery, whereas a logistics group may also operate less-than-truckload (PTL) freight, full truckload services, warehouses, contract supply-chain operations, and international forwarding. Their revenue, margins, capital needs, and competitive risks are not interchangeable.

Focused express peers

For a focused comparison, begin with companies whose main activity is express parcels moved by air, road, or a combination of both. Examine whether the company primarily serves businesses, consumers, e-commerce marketplaces, or a mix. A narrow peer group makes operating ratios easier to interpret, but it may leave out a potential investment whose diversification is itself important.

Broader logistics comparators

Delhivery illustrates why scope matters. Its FY2024–25 annual report describes express parcel alongside PTL, supply-chain services, truckload, and cross-border services. TCI can also be used as a logistics comparator, but it is not a pure courier peer. Including either company can be useful when the question is exposure to India’s wider logistics market; it is misleading when the table labels every rupee as directly comparable courier revenue.

Write the peer definition before collecting numbers

State whether your screen is for (1) pure or mostly express-parcel operators, (2) all listed logistics companies with a material delivery network, or (3) diversified transport groups. Keep the primary table within one category and place broader companies in a separate context table. This prevents a diversified operator from appearing to win simply because it reports more activities.

What the reported numbers actually say

The following figures are useful anchors, but they are not a same-date performance league table. Blue Dart’s latest cited announcement covers the year ended March 31, 2026. The regulator-hosted prospectus figures are for FY2024, and Delhivery’s network disclosure is for March 31, 2025.

Company and period Revenue measure Profit or network measure How to use it
Blue Dart, FY2025–26 (year ended March 31, 2026) Revenue from operations: ₹6,141 crore Profit after tax: ₹240 crore Latest cited annual headline; pair with the full FY2025–26 statements before calculating ratios.
Blue Dart, FY2024–25 Revenue from operations: ₹5,720 crore Not stated in the cited announcement extract Prior-year base for the latest reported revenue change; do not treat growth as shareholder return.
Blue Dart, FY2024 (SEBI-hosted prospectus) Revenue from operations: ₹57,201.80 million (₹5,720.18 crore) Not stated in the cited benchmark Older peer-benchmark period; do not blend with FY2025–26 results.
Delhivery, FY2024 (SEBI-hosted prospectus) Revenue from operations: ₹89,319.01 million (₹8,931.90 crore) Not stated in the cited benchmark Older figure from a different business mix and period than Blue Dart’s latest announcement.
Delhivery, as of March 31, 2025 Not stated in the cited network disclosure 18,833 PIN codes served Company-reported coverage indicator, not an independent service-quality test.

Blue Dart’s latest reported revenue was higher than its prior-year figure, an increase of approximately 7.4% when calculated from the two announced amounts. Management characterized FY2025–26 as a year of “focused execution and resilient performance” amid global uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and changing market dynamics. That is management’s description, not an independently verified forecast. The announcement linked momentum to e-commerce and B2B surface express.

Compare business mix before comparing margins

Revenue and margin differences often reflect what each company sells rather than superior execution. Build a segment map from annual reports and results presentations.

Express parcel and delivery mode

Separate air express from surface express where the company reports it. Air networks can support faster service and time-definite products but may carry different fuel, aircraft, airport, and handling costs. Surface networks can have a different cost curve and transit-time promise. Do not assume that a larger surface share is automatically better; assess the service promise, density, utilization, and customer requirements.

PTL, truckload, and freight activities

PTL and truckload revenue is generated by moving freight rather than individual courier parcels. Loads, tonnage, lane utilization, fleet arrangements, and fuel pass-through terms can drive economics that do not appear in a parcel company’s shipment or yield metrics. Keep these segments separate when calculating parcel revenue per shipment or parcel operating margin.

Supply-chain and contract services

Warehousing, fulfillment, and managed supply-chain contracts may produce longer customer relationships but require facilities, technology, labor, and implementation spending. Contract duration, renewal terms, customer concentration, and occupancy or throughput are more informative than a simple parcel count.

Cross-border services

International forwarding and cross-border delivery introduce customs, currency, trade-policy, and destination-market exposure. A company with a cross-border offering may have a larger addressable market, but its results cannot be compared with a domestic express operator without isolating that segment.

For each company, create a table showing revenue by segment, segment growth, segment profit if disclosed, and the share of consolidated revenue. Mark “not stated” where filings do not provide a comparable figure. Never allocate group revenue to courier operations by guesswork.

Use same-period growth measures

Growth comparisons require identical fiscal periods and a stable business perimeter. Pull at least three years of consolidated revenue, shipment or tonnage volumes, and any disclosed yield measure for each selected company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revenue growth

Calculate year-over-year growth from audited or officially announced numbers. Record whether the figure is revenue from operations, total income, or a segment subtotal. A change in accounting presentation can make a percentage appear to accelerate even when underlying activity did not.

Volume and yield

Parcel volume shows demand and network density; revenue per shipment indicates pricing, product mix, weight, and service-level changes. For freight companies, use the relevant unit such as tonnes, consignments, loads, or vehicle-kilometres. Do not put a parcel count beside a freight tonnage figure and call them equivalent growth measures.

Organic versus acquired growth

Check the year in which an acquisition, disposal, joint venture, or major contract entered the accounts. Present reported growth and, where management provides enough information, an organic view excluding the acquired perimeter. If no bridge is disclosed, state that the two cannot be cleanly separated rather than inventing an estimate.

Seasonality and exceptional periods

Quarterly peaks around festivals, shopping events, or harvest cycles can distort a single quarter. Compare the same quarter across years and examine full-year results. Note strikes, weather disruptions, regulatory changes, fuel-price shocks, or network reorganizations that affect one period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test profitability on a consistent accounting basis

Profitability is meaningful only when the numerator and denominator match. Use consolidated figures for all companies or standalone figures for all companies; do not mix them.

Operating margin and EBITDA

Calculate operating margin as operating profit divided by the selected revenue measure. If using EBITDA, reconcile the company’s definition to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization. Some companies exclude stock-based compensation, restructuring, or other items. Keep reported EBITDA and your normalized EBITDA in separate columns.

Net margin and tax effects

Net margin includes interest, taxes, depreciation, lease accounting, foreign-exchange effects, and non-operating items. It is useful for the shareholder outcome but can move for reasons unrelated to parcel economics. Review the tax rate and finance costs before concluding that one operating model is structurally more profitable.

One-off items

Read the notes for impairment charges, gains on asset sales, provisions, litigation, restructuring, and exceptional tax credits. Show reported profit and an adjusted figure only when the adjustment is clearly disclosed and consistently applied. Do not remove recurring expenses merely because management describes them as unusual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Return measures

Return on capital employed and return on equity can help compare efficiency, but leases, goodwill, minority interests, and acquisitions affect the denominator. Explain the formula and use average rather than ending balances when the data supports it.

Follow the cash and capital requirements

Revenue growth can consume cash when a company expands hubs, vehicles, sorting equipment, technology, or warehouses. Review the cash-flow statement and balance sheet alongside the income statement.

Operating cash flow

Compare cash generated from operations with EBITDA and net profit over several years. Investigate persistent gaps caused by receivables, customer advances, payables, or provisions. A one-year working-capital release can make cash conversion look stronger than the underlying cycle.

Capital expenditure and asset intensity

Separate maintenance capital expenditure from expansion capital expenditure where disclosed. Hubs, automated sorters, aircraft-related equipment, vehicles, and warehouse fit-outs have different lives and utilization risks. Calculate capital expenditure as a share of revenue only after checking whether leases or outsourced capacity are treated consistently.

Leases and debt

Courier networks frequently use leased facilities, vehicles, and equipment. Include lease liabilities in a broader leverage review and compare the company’s treatment of lease expense in EBITDA. Examine maturity schedules, interest coverage, covenant headroom, and floating-rate exposure rather than relying on a single debt-to-equity ratio.

Working capital

Track days sales outstanding, payable days, inventory where relevant, and customer deposits. Business-to-business contracts may have different payment terms from consumer or marketplace volumes. A rapid revenue increase accompanied by slower collections deserves a separate credit-risk review.

Evaluate network capability without confusing claims with testing

Network descriptions help explain capacity and reach, but they are company-reported claims, not independent measurements of delivery reliability or customer experience.

Coverage and density

Delhivery reported service to 18,833 PIN codes as of March 31, 2025. Treat that as a dated coverage disclosure. Ask whether a PIN code represents a staffed facility, a delivery route, a pickup point, or service through a partner, and whether definitions are consistent across companies.

Facilities and throughput

Compare the number and type of sorting centres, gateways, fulfillment centres, and regional hubs when disclosed. Capacity should be related to actual throughput and utilization; a larger footprint can be an advantage or an underused cost base.

Service metrics

Look for on-time delivery, first-attempt success, damage, loss, claims, complaint resolution, and scan compliance metrics. Verify the measurement period and denominator. If a company does not disclose a metric, mark it as unavailable rather than substituting anecdotal reviews.

Operating model

Identify owned versus outsourced line haul, franchise or partner delivery, captive fleets, and technology dependence. Outsourcing can reduce fixed assets while increasing supplier and service-control risk. An owned network can improve control but raise utilization and capital requirements.

Examine customer and sector exposure

Customer mix changes both growth opportunity and volatility. Separate e-commerce, traditional business-to-business, consumer-to-consumer, government, healthcare, international, and industrial demand where disclosures permit.

E-commerce concentration

E-commerce can support parcel growth but may carry intense price competition, returns, promotional peaks, and customer concentration. Review the percentage of revenue from major marketplaces or top accounts if disclosed, together with contract renewal and pricing provisions.

B2B and industrial demand

B2B shipments may be heavier, scheduled, and more service-sensitive than consumer parcels. Industrial customers can provide stable lanes but expose the carrier to sector cycles. Blue Dart’s FY2025–26 announcement specifically associated momentum with e-commerce and B2B surface express; test whether that mix change affected yield and margin.

Geographic and regulatory exposure

Map domestic versus cross-border revenue and the states or corridors that matter operationally. Fuel taxes, labor rules, road restrictions, customs procedures, and data requirements can affect different networks in different ways.

Build valuation only after normalizing the operating comparison

Valuation is a date-specific exercise. Use closing share prices from the same date, the same share-count convention, and the same fiscal-year estimates or trailing results for every company. The available evidence does not establish current market prices or a verified same-date valuation table, so stale multiples should not be inserted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the multiple to fit the business

  • Price-to-earnings: useful when profits are positive and reasonably normalized, but sensitive to one-off items, tax rates, and leverage.
  • Enterprise value to EBITDA: helps compare different debt levels, yet requires consistent lease treatment and EBITDA definitions.
  • Enterprise value to sales: can be a fallback for low-profit businesses, but it ignores major differences in margin and capital intensity.
  • Price-to-book: may be informative for asset-heavy operators, though goodwill and lease accounting can weaken comparability.

Pair every multiple with growth, normalized margins, cash conversion, leverage, and the business-mix table. A lower multiple may reflect weaker economics, greater execution risk, or a less comparable revenue base rather than a bargain.

Use sensitivity ranges

Model at least bear, base, and bull cases for volume growth, yield, operating margin, capital expenditure, and discount rate. Show which assumption drives most of the valuation. Avoid presenting a single target price as if it were a fact.

A practical Blue Dart–Delhivery–TCI comparison workflow

  1. Set the scope. Label Blue Dart as the focused express reference, Delhivery as an express-plus-logistics operator, and TCI as a broader logistics comparator unless the filings justify a narrower segment comparison.
  2. Lock the period. Use the same fiscal year for revenue, profit, cash flow, and balance-sheet data. Keep the FY2024 prospectus benchmark in a historical section, separate from FY2025–26 results.
  3. Collect primary filings. Download annual reports, audited results, segment notes, and investor presentations for each company. Record whether each figure is consolidated, standalone, reported, or adjusted.
  4. Reconcile definitions. Document shipment, consignment, parcel, tonne, load, PIN-code, revenue, EBITDA, and operating-profit definitions. The SEBI-hosted prospectus notes that Blue Dart and Delhivery use different shipment-count conventions.
  5. Split the businesses. Build segment columns for express parcel, air, surface, PTL, truckload, supply chain, cross-border, and other activities. Do not compare a group total with a single courier segment.
  6. Calculate operating indicators. Compute revenue growth, volume growth, yield, operating margin, EBITDA margin, net margin, cash conversion, capital expenditure intensity, and leverage using documented formulas.
  7. Check quality of earnings. Reconcile reported profit to cash, identify exceptional items, and review receivables, lease liabilities, customer concentration, and acquisition effects.
  8. Assess network economics. Relate coverage and facility disclosures to throughput, utilization, service metrics, and the owned-versus-outsourced model.
  9. Apply same-date valuation. Use synchronized prices and a consistent share count. Present a range and the assumptions behind it rather than a stale headline multiple.
  10. Write the conclusion by risk. Explain which company offers focused express exposure, which depends on broader logistics execution, and which assumptions would invalidate the comparison. Do not convert the result into a buy or sell instruction.

Common comparison errors and how to correct them

Mixing fiscal years

Putting Blue Dart’s FY2025–26 revenue beside Delhivery’s FY2024 prospectus revenue creates a false current ranking. Correct it by using a same-year table and placing older figures in a clearly dated historical table.

Treating total revenue as courier revenue

A logistics group’s total includes activities that a focused express carrier may not offer. Correct it with segment-level reporting and a separate diversified-peer category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming shipment counts are standardized

The prospectus warning about different Blue Dart and Delhivery shipment conventions means volume growth can be distorted. Correct it by defining each unit and comparing only like-for-like series.

Equating revenue growth with shareholder return

Revenue can rise while margins, cash flow, dilution, debt, or valuation deteriorate. Correct it by adding profit quality, capital needs, balance-sheet risk, and the price paid for earnings.

Using management language as independent evidence

Statements about resilience, momentum, or market opportunity are useful context but remain management’s characterization. Correct it by checking the underlying financial, operational, and cash-flow disclosures.

Ranking network size as service quality

PIN-code coverage and facility counts do not prove on-time delivery, low damage, or customer satisfaction. Correct it by seeking defined service metrics and labeling network figures as company-reported.

Investor checklist

  • Have I written a peer definition that separates focused express from diversified logistics?
  • Are all headline figures from the same fiscal period and accounting perimeter?
  • Do I know what each company counts as a shipment or consignment?
  • Have I separated air, surface, PTL, truckload, supply chain, and cross-border activities?
  • Did I compare revenue growth with volume, yield, margins, and cash generation?
  • Did I identify one-off items, acquisitions, leases, working-capital swings, and debt maturities?
  • Are network and coverage claims dated and clearly labeled as company-reported?
  • Did I examine e-commerce, B2B, top-customer, geographic, and cross-border exposure?
  • Are share prices, share counts, and valuation inputs synchronized to one date?
  • Does the conclusion describe trade-offs and risks rather than issue a buy or sell recommendation?

How to read the comparison responsibly

Blue Dart’s latest reported results provide a useful focused-express reference, while Delhivery and TCI can broaden the analysis into integrated logistics. The comparison becomes informative only after you separate their activities, align periods, normalize definitions, and test earnings against cash and capital requirements. Use the resulting table to frame questions for further filing review, not as a substitute for understanding each company’s strategy, risks, and valuation.
