How to Compare Student Loan Refinance Offers and Estimate Your Savings

Compare student loan refinance offers by APR, term, rate type, total repayment, fees and protections—not by monthly payment alone. Learn how to estimate costs and assess federal-loan trade-offs.

To compare student loan refinance offers, look beyond the quoted rate: weigh APR, repayment term, fixed or variable rate, scheduled payment, fees, total repayment, and contract protections. A smaller monthly payment is not automatically a saving, and refinancing federal loans into a private loan means giving up federal benefits. Use the steps below to estimate costs, then verify the terms in the lender’s written offer.

How do I compare student loan refinance offers?

Start with a side-by-side record of your current loan or loans and each written refinance offer. CFPB guidance recommends evaluating APR and the full repayment cost, not just a quoted interest rate or a new monthly payment. The CFPB’s refinancing guidance was last reviewed December 3, 2024.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

There is no single offer that is best for every borrower. Lender rates, underwriting terms, and contract features vary, and the result depends on your balances and repayment plans. This comparison is a way to assess offers you actually receive—not a current lender ranking or a borrower-specific savings calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gather the same information for each loan

  • Current loan: payoff balance, interest rate, fixed or variable status, required payment, remaining term, and any benefit or protection you rely on.
  • Refinance offer: APR, fixed or variable status, repayment term, scheduled payment, lender-disclosed fees and discounts, and terms for hardship relief, cosigner release, discharge, and prepayment.

Use the payoff balance rather than the original amount borrowed. If you have several existing loans, record each separately so you can see which balances and terms the proposed refinance would replace. Save the written offer: a preliminary rate or advertised range is not a borrower-specific contract.

For a useful comparison, keep the records consistent. Note the date of each quote and whether the offer is conditional on approval, autopay, or another stated requirement. Check whether the scheduled payment and rate shown are tied to the same repayment term and rate type you intend to accept. If the offer shows a range rather than a final approved rate, you do not yet have enough information to calculate a definitive cost.

Compare offers on the same dimensions

What to compare What to check
APR and fees Compare APRs when fee structures differ, and confirm which fees and discounts each quote includes.
Repayment term Record the number of years or payments. A longer term can lower the scheduled payment while increasing total interest and repayment cost.
Rate type Mark each offer fixed or variable. A variable rate may reset under the loan contract.
Total scheduled repayment Compare all scheduled payments over each loan’s full term, and include lender-disclosed fees that are not already reflected in the APR or payment.
Protections and flexibility Review hardship relief, discharge, prepayment, and cosigner-release terms against benefits you currently use or may need.
Tax effects If you claim the student loan interest deduction, check how a refinance could affect your tax situation.

Do not assume that two APRs are directly equivalent without checking what each lender included in its calculation. Likewise, an autopay discount belongs in your estimate only if you qualify and intend to maintain autopay.

APR is useful for comparing offers whose fee structures differ, but it does not replace reading the quote. Verify whether the disclosed APR incorporates particular fees or discounts and avoid counting those same costs twice. The scheduled payment and total outflow matter too: APR alone does not tell you whether a longer repayment term fits your budget or increases the amount you pay over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate the comparison into two questions: what will the loan cost if you make every scheduled payment as quoted, and what flexibility or protections do you give up or gain? A quote can look attractive on the first question while being less suitable on the second. Give those features weight according to your own needs rather than assuming every borrower values them equally.

How do I estimate my new payment and total cost?

For a conventional fixed-rate amortizing refinance, the scheduled payment is determined by the amount borrowed, periodic interest rate, and number of payments. A payment calculator or spreadsheet can estimate it, but the result is not a promise: fees, payment timing, actual payoff amounts, and final contract terms can change what you pay. CFPB’s educational material explains the main cost drivers and how calculators estimate monthly payments and total amount paid. See the CFPB’s student debt repayment resources, updated January 23, 2025.

Build a like-for-like comparison

  1. Enter the proposed amount borrowed. Use the payoff amount the refinance would cover, plus any fees financed into the new loan if the offer says they are included.
  2. Enter the offer’s rate and term. Use the written offer’s APR or interest-rate details as appropriate for the calculator, and match the exact repayment duration and payment frequency.
  3. Record the scheduled payment and total. Multiply the scheduled payment by the number of scheduled payments to estimate total scheduled outflow. Add any relevant lender-disclosed fees not already captured in that total.
  4. Calculate the existing loan schedule. Estimate the payments remaining under the current schedule over a comparable payoff horizon, using current balances, rates, payments, and remaining terms.
  5. Compare both monthly cash flow and total scheduled repayment. Keep the balance and payoff horizon visible. If the new term is longer, show the payment reduction alongside any increase in total repayment; do not call the monthly reduction itself savings.

Be explicit about what the total represents. The product of the scheduled payment and number of payments is an estimate of scheduled outflow, not necessarily the exact amount that will be paid. It can differ if the payoff amount is not what you expected, payment dates change, rates reset, or fees and other contract terms apply. Use the written offer to determine which items are already included before adding them separately.

For the existing-loan side, use the remaining schedule rather than comparing the new loan with the original amount you borrowed years ago. If you have multiple current loans, total the payments still due on those loans and compare them with the proposed refinance schedule. The comparison should reflect the debt being replaced and the time left to repay it, not just the face value of a new offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A spreadsheet can make the assumptions visible: list the balance, rate type, rate, remaining term, payment, fees or discounts, and estimated total for each option. Keep the monthly payment and total repayment in separate columns. If an assumption changes—for example, you compare a different term—update it clearly rather than treating one estimate as a guaranteed outcome.

For a variable-rate offer, calculate the initial quoted terms separately from a stress case. Use the contract’s rate-adjustment provisions to consider how payment and total cost could change if the rate resets. The initial quote is not a fixed payment promise for the life of a variable-rate loan. CFPB warns that private variable rates can rise, including above a federal loan’s fixed rate. Read the CFPB’s guidance on private student loan rate changes.

Do not invent a future variable rate or present a stress case as a forecast. Read the offer for its adjustment provisions and use those terms to frame a possible scenario. If you cannot tell how or when the rate may change from the documents, ask the lender for clarification before relying on a payment estimate.

Keep estimates distinct from final terms

Federal Student Aid’s Repayment Calculator estimates monthly payments and total amount paid for eligible federal repayment plans. It cautions that the result is an estimate; the servicer sets final terms, including the payment amount, after processing an application. Use your federal aid account and the official calculator for a federal-plan comparison rather than treating a private refinance estimate as equivalent to every federal option. Open Federal Student Aid’s Loan Simulator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when comparing private refinancing with federal repayment: the federal calculator covers eligible federal plans, while a private offer has its own lender terms. Neither estimate substitutes for the final terms set after an application is processed. Check current federal information and the actual lender documents before making a decision.

Will refinancing actually save me money?

It can, but a lower quoted rate alone cannot establish that. Savings depend on the payoff balance, time remaining, rate type, offered term, fees and discounts, and the payments you would otherwise make. There is no universal savings amount: the result requires your own loan details and actual written offers.

Compare total scheduled repayment, not only the monthly bill. If you refinance into a longer term, you may pay less each month but make payments for longer and pay more overall. A shorter term generally has higher payments and less time for interest to accrue; a longer term generally reduces the payment but can cost more interest over the loan’s life, as CFPB explains in its student loan refinancing guidance.

Fees and conditional discounts also matter. Include disclosed fees once, and count a discount only when the written offer specifies it and you expect to meet its conditions. For variable-rate offers, a cost comparison based only on the initial rate leaves out the possibility of future rate changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To decide whether the numbers indicate savings, compare the estimated total under the new offer with the estimated payments remaining under your current schedule, using the same starting balance and a clearly stated payoff horizon. If the new loan stretches repayment beyond that horizon, show the additional time and payments rather than hiding them behind a lower monthly figure. A different term changes both cash flow and the length of time interest accrues.

There is no borrower-independent savings figure to apply. Without your current balances, rates, remaining terms, and actual refinance offer, it would be misleading to estimate a dollar amount or claim a typical borrower outcome. Treat calculator results as estimates and use final lender terms for the decision.

Is a lower monthly payment a better deal?

Not necessarily. The payment may be lower because the refinance extends repayment, not because the loan is cheaper. Compare the new payment with the total scheduled amount over the full term and with the remaining payments on your current schedule. A payment that fits your monthly budget can still carry a higher total cost.

CFPB captures the trade-off in its consumer guidance: “The monthly payment on your new loan might be lower, but the interest rate could be higher.” — Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, “Should I consolidate or refinance my student loans?”

A smaller payment can still be important if monthly cash flow is your main constraint, but it answers a different question from whether the refinance reduces total cost. Put both measures next to each other: monthly payment for budgeting, and total scheduled repayment for overall cost. Then review the term and protections so you understand what the lower payment entails.

Should I refinance federal student loans?

Treat this as a separate decision from refinancing private loans. When a private refinance pays off federal debt, the debt becomes private, and the borrower loses federal program rights and protections, including federal repayment options and protections such as deferment, forbearance, and cancellation. Private lenders may offer relief, but their contract terms are not necessarily equivalent to federal protections. CFPB explains the consequences of refinancing federal student loans.

Before accepting a private offer, verify whether you qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), an income-driven repayment plan, or another federal benefit, and consider its projected value for your circumstances. CFPB describes a 120-qualifying-payment (10-year) horizon for PSLF in its discussion of Direct Consolidation Loans; eligibility requirements still apply. Federal Student Aid also describes temporary payment relief for qualifying circumstances. Check current program terms and your own eligibility rather than assuming a benefit will apply to every borrower. Review Federal Student Aid’s PSLF information and its repayment-plan information.

Compare the estimated private-loan cost with the federal options and protections you would surrender. Whether those protections are valuable depends on factors including eligibility, income, employment, repayment history, and risk tolerance. A lower private rate by itself does not settle the decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, make the federal comparison before you sign or allow a refinance to pay off those loans. Identify which federal loans and benefits would be affected, check your eligibility and repayment history, and use official federal information to understand the options available to you. If you are pursuing PSLF or an income-driven plan, do not assume that a private lender’s lower quoted rate compensates for losing access to that federal path.

Federal protections are not a guaranteed financial advantage for every borrower, and their value depends on whether you qualify and expect to use them. The key is to make the trade-off deliberately: estimate private cost, verify the value and eligibility of federal options, and account for the fact that private relief provisions are governed by the lender’s contract.

What contract details can change the comparison?

Rate adjustments

For a variable-rate offer, read how often the rate can change and what contract provisions govern adjustments. The rate may reset, raising payment and total cost; do not present the initial payment as though it will stay the same throughout repayment. Compare a quoted-rate estimate with a stress case built around the adjustment terms in the offer.

Compare variable and fixed offers as different risk profiles, not merely as two starting numbers. A fixed offer provides a rate that does not vary in the way a variable offer can; the latter may change under the contract and can rise above a federal loan’s fixed rate. Whether that risk is acceptable is borrower-specific, so make the possibility of a higher future payment visible in your comparison.

Hardship relief and discharge

Review what the lender says it will do if you cannot make payments, and what happens in circumstances covered by discharge provisions. Do not treat private relief as interchangeable with federal deferment, forbearance, or cancellation. Compare the written terms with the benefits tied to your current loans.

Look for the actual conditions and limits in the offer rather than relying on a general description of “flexibility.” The comparison should capture the circumstances in which relief may be available and whether those terms meet the needs you are trying to address. Private lender relief terms are not necessarily equivalent to federal programs, so do not assume they are equivalent.

Cosigner release and prepayment

If a cosigner is involved, check the release conditions and the steps required to meet them; do not assume release happens automatically after a set number of payments. Check whether the contract addresses prepayment and any related charges or restrictions. These details can matter even when the rate and payment look attractive.

Include these terms in the side-by-side record even if they do not change the first scheduled payment. A cosigner-release condition can affect the borrower and cosigner later, while the prepayment provisions matter if you expect to pay ahead of schedule. Compare what each written offer says rather than inferring a policy from the lender’s general marketing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tax considerations

If you claim the student loan interest deduction, review the tax implications of changing loans. CFPB recommends considering tax effects when evaluating refinancing. The effect depends on your tax circumstances, so check applicable tax guidance or consult a qualified tax professional rather than assuming the deduction will remain unchanged. Read CFPB guidance on student loan refinancing and taxes.

What repayment terms might an offer include?

CFPB said in 2024 that private consolidation loans may have repayment terms ranging from 10 to 25 years, depending on the lender and total loan amount. This is a general range, not a guarantee that any particular lender offers every term. Compare the actual term in each written offer, because repayment duration affects both payment size and total interest. See CFPB’s guidance.

Use that range as context, not as a shortcut for selecting a term. A term available from one lender may not be available from another, and the appropriate choice depends on the actual payment and total cost shown in your offer. Ask the lender to clarify any term or fee you cannot identify in the written documents before comparing options.

Common comparison mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing on the advertised rate alone: An advertised figure is not necessarily your approved offer. Compare written terms, APR, fees, rate type, and repayment duration.
  • Calling a payment reduction savings: A smaller scheduled payment can come from extending the term. Check the full repayment total as well.
  • Comparing different horizons: Put the current remaining schedule beside the new offer’s complete schedule and make any additional repayment time clear.
  • Ignoring variable-rate risk: The quoted initial terms do not promise the same payment for the entire loan. Review the adjustment terms and consider a stress case.
  • Double-counting or overlooking costs: Check which fees and discounts are already included in APR or payment, add other disclosed fees once, and count a conditional discount only if you expect to qualify.
  • Overlooking federal options: Before refinancing federal debt, check eligibility for repayment, forgiveness, and temporary relief programs you could lose.
  • Treating estimates as final: Calculators are for planning; lender and servicer documents set the actual terms.

These checks help distinguish a quote that changes your monthly cash flow from one that may change your overall cost. If two offers are close on payment, compare total repayment, rate behavior, and the protections that matter to you before deciding.

Will refinancing actually save me money?

It may, but a lower quoted rate alone does not establish savings. Compare estimated total payments under the new offer with the payments remaining on your current schedule, accounting for balance, term, fees, discounts, and possible variable-rate changes. A borrower-specific result requires your loan details and actual written offers.

Is a lower monthly payment a better deal?

Not necessarily. The payment may be lower because the new loan has a longer repayment term, which can increase total interest and overall repayment. Compare the monthly payment and the full scheduled cost separately.

How do I estimate my new payment?

For a conventional fixed-rate amortizing loan, the amount borrowed, periodic interest rate, and number of payments determine the scheduled payment. Use a calculator with the written offer’s amount, rate, and term, then multiply the payment by the number of scheduled payments to estimate total outflow. Treat the result as an estimate, not a promise.

Should I refinance federal student loans into a private loan?

Check federal repayment and forgiveness eligibility and the value of protections such as deferment, forbearance, and cancellation before deciding. A private refinance pays off federal debt and removes access to federal program rights; private relief terms are not necessarily equivalent. A lower private rate alone does not settle the decision.

Can a variable refinance rate change after I accept the offer?

It may reset according to the loan contract. Read the rate-adjustment provisions and estimate the initial quoted terms separately from a stress case based on those provisions. Do not assume the initial payment will remain unchanged for the loan’s full term.

What refinance repayment terms are available?

CFPB said in 2024 that private consolidation terms may range from 10 to 25 years, depending on the lender and total loan amount. This is a general range, not a promise that every lender offers every term. Check the actual written offer.

Should I include an autopay discount in my estimate?

Include it only if the written offer specifies the discount, you qualify, and you intend to maintain autopay. Confirm whether the quoted APR or payment already reflects it so you do not count the discount twice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Compare written refinance offers by APR, term, rate type, scheduled payment, fees and discounts, total scheduled repayment, and contract protections. A lower monthly bill is not proof of savings, and a variable rate can change. Before refinancing federal loans into private debt, check the federal benefits and protections you may lose. Use calculators for estimates, then verify final terms with the lender and servicer.
