How to Compare Old and New Polymarket Contracts Before Placing a Bet

Before betting on similar Polymarket markets, compare their full rules, resolution source, timing, edge cases and clarifications—then check live price and liquidity.

Compare the contracts’ full written rules—not just their titles—before you place an order. Check what each contract asks, its resolution source and timing, how edge cases are treated, and whether either has a clarification. Then compare the current price and available liquidity for the trade you intend to make.

Why similar titles may describe different bets

A Polymarket market’s title is a shorthand description, not the settlement test. The platform’s Help Center puts it plainly: “The market title describes the market, but the rules define how it should be resolved.” Read the complete rules on both market pages; do not assume two contracts resolve alike because their headlines look similar. Polymarket’s market rules guidance

Compare the contracts line by line

  1. Define the proposition. Write down the event each contract asks about. Compare the population or entities covered, threshold, geography, time window, and any qualifying conditions. Use the rules, not assumptions based on the title.
  2. Identify the resolution source. Note the source named in each contract and the role it plays in establishing the result. Different named sources can make otherwise similar contracts materially different.
  3. Compare timing and triggers. Record each market’s end date, cutoff, or event trigger exactly. A different time window can change the outcome even if the central event is the same.
  4. Read the edge cases. Check how the rules address delays, partial events, ambiguous or conflicting reports, and unavailable evidence where relevant. These provisions can decide a result when the straightforward case does not occur.

Check clarification history before ordering

Look on each market page for a clarification or advance clarification announcement, and read its text and timing. Polymarket says a clarification clears the order book and cancels resting orders; an advance notice also clears it when announced. If a clarification affects a contract you planned to trade, re-read the rules and check the live market before submitting an order. Polymarket’s guidance on market clarifications

Compare current price and liquidity separately from the rules

Once you understand what each contract settles on, inspect its current quote and the liquidity available for the size of order you intend to place. Polymarket describes share prices as market-driven, reflecting supply and demand; lower liquidity can increase the price impact of a trade. Price and liquidity change over time, so a quote observed earlier is not a reliable execution comparison. Polymarket’s explanation of market prices and liquidity and price impact

Keep the two judgments distinct: rules determine what outcome a share represents, while current market conditions affect the price and execution of an order. A lower displayed price alone does not establish that one contract is a better trade.

Understand what happens at resolution

Polymarket says markets resolve under their predefined rules through UMA’s Optimistic Oracle. Winning shares pay $1 each, losing shares become worthless, and trading ends once a market resolves. The Help Center describes a two-hour challenge period for a proposed resolution; if challenged, the proposal enters the dispute process. Polymarket’s resolution and payout guidance
