Compare NGX shares using the same dates, the same return definition, and consistent company-level data. Then examine trading activity, valuation and disclosures separately: a strong past return does not by itself mean a share is easy to trade or attractively priced. This guide sets out a repeatable method; it does not rank stocks or identify a current buy.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
Before comparing Nigerian Exchange (NGX) shares, decide which companies are in scope and what question the comparison is meant to answer. Are you assessing how prices moved over a past period, whether there was enough trading activity for an order of a particular size, or how share prices relate to reported earnings? Those are related but different questions, and each needs its own measure.

For every share, use the same start and end dates. Record the data source, currency, whether prices are adjusted for corporate actions, and whether returns include dividends. If one company has a price change measured over six months and another over a year, the figures are not directly comparable. Nor is a price-only change equivalent to a shareholder’s total return.
- Returns: measure what happened to price, and disclose whether dividend income and corporate actions are included.
- Liquidity: assess trading over a stated period using more than a single day’s share volume.
- Valuation: compare a clearly defined indicator with the financial period and earnings information behind it.
- Disclosures: check the latest relevant company filings, corporate actions and exchange compliance information.
Keep a dated worksheet. A comparison is a snapshot: share prices, trading activity, financial results and corporate disclosures can change. A figure without its date and measurement period can be misleading even if its arithmetic is correct.

Compare returns over identical dates
Calculate price return consistently
A simple price return is the difference between the closing price at the end of the chosen period and the closing price at its start, divided by the starting price, expressed as a percentage:
Price return = (ending price − starting price) ÷ starting price × 100
Use the same price convention for every company. For example, compare close with close, rather than one share’s opening price with another’s close. NGX X-DataPortal describes historical equity fields including open, high, low, close and current price. When working from historical quotes, identify which field you used and the dates covered.

This calculation measures price movement only. It does not include dividends, fees, taxes or the effect of corporate actions unless the data series has been adjusted to account for them. Do not label a price-only percentage as a complete shareholder return.
Decide whether dividends are part of the question
NGX explains that shareholders may benefit from share-price growth and/or dividends, and notes that “Some companies pay dividends regularly while others seldom pay or not pay at all.” If the aim is to compare price performance, state that dividends are excluded. If the aim is to compare return to a shareholder, identify the dividends included and the method used to include them.

Dividend frequency and amount can differ by company. A price-only comparison may therefore tell an incomplete story about shareholder income; on the other hand, an announced dividend is not automatically the same thing as cash received by every investor. Be clear about the period and treatment rather than adding a dividend figure without checking its relevant dates and whether it belongs in the return window.
Account for corporate actions and price-series limits
Corporate actions can affect the meaning of a raw price comparison. NGX says corporate-action information is available through its feed and corporate-disclosures page. Check for relevant events during the chosen period and confirm whether the historical price series you are using reflects them. If it does not, a simple start-to-end price calculation may not represent a comparable economic change across shares.

A gain over a past window does not establish that the share will continue to rise, and the window selected can materially affect the result. NGX warns that shares can lose value, with prices falling below a purchase price because of macroeconomic or company-specific factors.
Measure liquidity using activity over a period
Liquidity is about trading activity and the practical ability to buy or sell, not simply the number of shares that changed hands on one day. NGX X-DataPortal describes traded volume and number of trades among its historical equity fields. Daily Official Lists and market reports are also identified in the NGX Data Library. Together, such records can help you examine trading over the same period for each company.
Look at volume, value and trade count together
- Traded volume is the number of shares traded in the selected period. It indicates activity in share units, but a large number of low-priced shares and a smaller number of high-priced shares are not equivalent in cash terms.
- Value traded expresses the cash value of trades and helps put share volume in context. Specify the dates and how you derived or obtained the figure.
- Number of trades gives another view of activity. A high share count concentrated in very few transactions can look different from similar volume spread across many trades.
For a period comparison, calculate or obtain totals over identical dates. If you also show average daily activity, use the same definition and trading-day basis for each stock. Averages can hide quiet days and brief spikes, so inspect the underlying daily pattern when order execution matters. These are descriptive measures, not guarantees about the price or size at which a future order can be filled.

Use turnover carefully
Turnover can provide context for how much trading occurred relative to a market or company measure, but label exactly what the figure represents, its period and its denominator. Do not treat a market-wide turnover total as evidence of one company’s liquidity. NGX Group reported ₦5.96 trillion in year-to-date equities turnover for 2025; that is an exchange-wide statistic, not the turnover or trading capacity of any individual share.

A high-volume day is not a promise that an order can be executed at a desired price. NGX describes its market as combining quote-driven and order-driven transactions; that structure does not remove price or execution risk. For an investor considering a particular order, recent activity is useful context, but it cannot assure that the market will offer the same conditions when the order is placed.
Match liquidity evidence to the question
For a broad initial screen, compare period volume, value traded and trade count. If the practical question is whether a particular order could be handled without accepting a materially different price, those historical totals alone cannot settle it. The available materials cited here identify market data fields and reports but do not provide a unified company-level execution test or a guarantee of market depth.
Compare valuation without turning a ratio into a verdict
Valuation indicators are comparisons, not automatic labels of “cheap” or “expensive.” A ratio can be useful only when its calculation and underlying financial period are understood. NGX lists a PE Ratio resource in its Data Library, but the existence of that resource does not validate a particular company value or establish a single official NGX valuation method.
Read the earnings period behind a PE ratio
A price-to-earnings ratio relates a share price to earnings per share, or an equivalent market-value measure to earnings. Before comparing PE figures, establish which earnings period is used, what financial statements support the earnings, and whether the data is comparable across the companies. A ratio based on a different reporting period or different earnings basis is not a clean side-by-side comparison.

Check whether the earnings figure is positive and meaningful for the comparison. If a company has losses or unusually changed earnings, a PE ratio may be unavailable or may not provide a useful standalone comparison. Do not infer that a low multiple proves undervaluation or that a high multiple proves overvaluation. The NGX resources described here do not supply current company-by-company PE values or a basis for such conclusions.
Use company history as context, not a substitute for current filings
NGX’s X-Factbook is described as an annual digital reference containing company profiles, five-year financial performance, corporate-action history and market or index information. The Data Library also identifies market capitalization and shares outstanding resources. Such material can help place a company’s figures in context, but a historical series does not replace checking the relevant current financial statements and disclosures.
When a valuation figure is supplied by a data resource, preserve its date and earnings period in your worksheet. If you calculate it yourself, record the inputs and the exact convention. Do not blend a current share price with earnings from an unspecified period and present the resulting multiple as if it were timeless or directly comparable to a differently calculated figure.

A numerical comparison can become stale when a company releases new results, delays a filing or announces a corporate action. NGX’s X-Compliance material covers released financials, delayed or delinquent filings, free-float deficiencies, listing-rule breaches, enforcement actions and delisting-related information. Review the latest applicable items for each company before relying on an old worksheet.

A filing status is not itself a valuation ratio, and a compliance item does not tell you how a share’s future price will move. It is information to consider alongside the quantitative measures, with its date and relevance recorded.

- Identify the latest available company financial statements and the period they cover.
- Check NGX X-Compliance information for relevant filing delays, deficiencies, listing-rule or enforcement matters.
- Review corporate disclosures and corporate-action information for events during the return period.
- Refresh your price, volume, trade-count and valuation inputs if a material new disclosure changes the comparison basis.
Use NGX data resources with their scope in mind

The NGX Group’s 2025 report is useful only as market backdrop. It reported the NGX All-Share Index rose 51.19% during 2025, ending at 155,613 points compared with 102,926 at the start of the year; equity market capitalization was ₦99.38 trillion at year-end. These are reported market-wide statistics from Nigerian Exchange Group in 2026. None is the return, valuation or liquidity of an individual listed company.
Build a comparison worksheet step by step
A compact worksheet makes the choices behind each figure visible. The purpose is traceability, not a composite score that hides trade-offs. Use one row per company and keep the raw source data or source reference alongside each calculated result.
- Define the universe. List the NGX symbols and security names being compared; note the market type if relevant. Avoid silently changing the company set halfway through.
- Set the measurement window. Record identical start and end dates for returns and liquidity, and identify the source or price field used.
- Calculate price return. Apply the same close-to-close convention to each share. Label it price return if dividends are excluded; document any corporate-action adjustment.
- Record dividend treatment. State whether dividends are excluded or included, and specify the relevant dividends and method if included. Do not leave the label “return” ambiguous.
- Summarize trading activity. Compare volume, value traded and number of trades over the same dates. Note whether values are reported directly or calculated from underlying data.
- Capture valuation inputs. Record the PE figure or calculate it using a stated convention. Include its date, earnings period and source, and flag cases where earnings make the ratio unsuitable.
- Review disclosures. Record relevant filings, compliance matters and corporate actions, along with their dates.
- Separate observations from judgments. Describe what the figures show, then state what they do not establish. Do not collapse returns, liquidity, valuation and compliance into one unexplained ranking.
A useful result might say that one share had a higher price return over a defined period while another had more consistent trading activity, with PE figures based on different reporting periods requiring caution. It should not leap from those observations to a universal “best stock” conclusion. The appropriate interpretation depends on the investor’s question and on comparable, current company-level inputs.

Common comparison mistakes to avoid
- Comparing different windows: align start and end dates before comparing percentage returns or trading activity.
- Calling price change total return: disclose the treatment of dividends and corporate actions.
- Using volume alone: add value traded and trade count, and do not treat one busy session as evidence of dependable execution.
- Mixing market and company data: index performance, aggregate market capitalization and exchange-wide turnover do not describe an individual share.
- Reading a PE ratio without its basis: attach the relevant earnings period and financial information; the ratio alone is not a valuation conclusion.
- Relying on stale disclosures: check for new filings and corporate actions that may affect the period or financial inputs.
- Assuming the exchange supplies a complete ranking: the described NGX resources provide data and reports, not a unified official scoring model or a company recommendation.
What this comparison can and cannot tell you
A consistent comparison can show how selected shares performed over a defined past window, how much activity was recorded during that window, and what valuation indicators look like when calculated from identified financial periods. It can also flag differences in reporting history and disclosure status that deserve attention.
It cannot, on the evidence available here, identify a current best-performing NGX stock, calculate current company-specific returns or PE ratios, guarantee that a particular order can be executed at a chosen price, or determine whether an investment suits an individual. Those conclusions require a defined stock universe, dated company-level prices and trading data, applicable financial periods, an explicit return method and the investor’s own circumstances.
