How to Compare Liquid Mutual Funds by Returns, Risk, and Redemption Time

Compare liquid mutual funds on three separate questions: what they have returned over the same period, what their portfolios hold, and when redemption proceeds are expected to reach your account. Also check plan costs and exit-load terms. Liquid funds are market-linked mutual-fund schemes, not guaranteed deposits, and a redemption NAV cutoff is not the same as a cash-payout deadline.

Compare historical returns on the same basis

Liquid-fund returns vary with short-term interest rates and with the tenor and credit quality of the securities a scheme holds. AMFI describes liquid schemes as investing in money-market instruments with maturities not exceeding 91 days; that category limit does not make every scheme’s portfolio or return identical. See AMFI’s description of mutual-fund scheme types.

For a fair comparison, record the same trailing period, plan type and as-of date for every scheme. Label annualized figures where applicable, and treat all past performance as historical rather than a forecast or promise. Do not rank funds using returns taken from different dates or unlike plans.

Compare portfolio risk, not just the category label

Review each scheme’s current holdings, credit quality, maturity profile and risk disclosure together. A short-maturity mandate does not eliminate credit or liquidity risk, and a liquid fund is not a guaranteed-return product. AMFI states, “Mutual Fund Schemes are not guaranteed or assured return products,” and identifies risks that can include liquidity risk, default risk and loss of principal. Read its mutual-fund risk guidance.

Use the same collection date for the factsheets or official scheme information you compare. If a scheme’s portfolio or risk information is unavailable for that date, mark it as unavailable rather than inferring its risk from past returns.

Compare redemption time separately from the applicable NAV

The NAV rule determines the price used to process a redemption; it does not tell you when the money will be credited. AMFI’s liquid-fund cutoff guidance says an application received by 3:00 p.m. receives the closing NAV of the day immediately preceding the next business day. An application received after 3:00 p.m. receives the next business day’s closing NAV. Check the current AMFI applicable-NAV guidance for transaction details.

Separately, AMFI’s investor education guidance says redemption proceeds for liquid and overnight funds are paid the next business day. This is category-level guidance, not a promise of instant access; check the scheme and platform’s current operational terms, including applicable business-day and holiday calendars. See AMFI’s guidance on mutual-fund investing.

Check subscription timing if you are comparing how to invest

Purchase timing has its own applicable-NAV rules. AMFI describes a 1:30 p.m. cutoff for liquid-fund subscriptions, with the applicable NAV also depending on when the application is received and the money is available for utilization. Do not assume that submitting an order before the cutoff alone determines its NAV; consult the current AMFI cutoff guidance and your fund or platform’s instructions.

Compare plan costs and scheme terms

Match direct plans with direct plans or regular plans with regular plans, then check the scheme’s expense information and current terms. Review any exit load: AMFI explains that a redemption price takes an exit load into account where one applies. Confirm the applicable terms in the current scheme documents and AMFI’s NAV explanation.

Use a like-for-like comparison sheet

For each scheme, record the information below using the same as-of date wherever possible. The scheme factsheet and official scheme documents are the appropriate places to verify scheme-specific details.

Comparison area Record for each scheme How to use it
Historical returns Same trailing periods, plan type and as-of date; note whether figures are annualized Compare like with like; past returns are not guaranteed.
Portfolio risk Holdings, credit quality, maturity profile and risk disclosure Assess the portfolio rather than assuming all liquid funds carry identical risk.
Redemption Applicable NAV cutoff, expected payout timing, business-day calendar, facility limits or conditions Keep the NAV date separate from the date proceeds are expected.
Costs and plan Direct or regular plan, expense information, exit load and other scheme terms Check current scheme-specific terms before deciding.

A category-level description cannot establish which fund is best today. A current winner comparison requires contemporaneous scheme-level returns, portfolio information, risk disclosures, costs and redemption terms measured on a comparable basis.
