To compare Indian bank fixed deposits fairly, match the amount, tenure, depositor category and product type; then compare the interest payout schedule and the rules for closing the deposit early. A high headline rate may not fit if you need income during the term or might need access to the money. The rules and sources here concern Indian bank deposits and should not be assumed to apply to deposits in other countries or to every deposit product.
The three questions to answer are: which rate applies to your specific deposit, when will you receive interest, and what changes if you close the deposit before maturity? RBI directions and guidance support the comparison framework below, while each bank’s live rate schedule and product terms determine the details of a particular deposit. Rates and terms can change, so use current disclosures when you compare.

Start with a like-for-like comparison
A quoted fixed-deposit rate is meaningful only when the deposits being compared share the same key assumptions. Banks may set rates and product terms differently, so compare the exact scenario you might open rather than looking for a single rate that is “best” in the abstract. SBI’s deposit-rate page is one example of a bank’s own source for current rates and terms, not a market-wide comparison.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Amount: Compare rates for the same deposit amount.
- Tenure: Match the period the money will remain on deposit.
- Depositor category: Confirm the rate applies to your category.
- Product type: Check that you are comparing the same kind of deposit and payout arrangement.
- Rate-check date: Record when you checked each bank’s schedule; rates and terms can change.
Use the bank’s current schedule and product terms when making a decision. A rate shown on a page or in an older comparison may no longer be current.

Why the assumptions matter
Two displayed rates are not a useful comparison if they apply to different amounts, tenures, depositor categories or products. First define the scenario you are actually considering. If you change one of those inputs between banks, write down the difference rather than treating the results as if they were directly equivalent. A comparison should make its assumptions visible so you can tell whether a rate difference reflects the same situation or a different set of terms.
Product type deserves particular attention because it can affect the payout arrangement and the applicable conditions. Do not assume that two deposits with similar names offer identical choices. Read the specific product’s terms alongside the bank’s rate schedule, and confirm that the rate quoted belongs to the product and category you intend to open.
No market-wide rate or average establishes a single best rate. The SBI page is useful as an example of where a bank publishes its own rate information; it does not establish that SBI, or any particular product on its page, is best across banks. Check the current schedule of each bank you are considering and note the date, because a rate comparison can become stale as schedules change.
Choose when you want to receive interest
Payout frequency is separate from the quoted rate. RBI rules allow banks to pay term-deposit interest at intervals shorter than quarterly intervals. That does not mean every bank or product offers every possible frequency: the available choices and the calculation method are specific to the deposit and must be checked with the bank. See the RBI deposit-rate notification.
When comparing products, distinguish the timing of the payout from the quoted interest rate. One question is what rate is stated for the deposit; another is whether interest is paid to you during the term or at maturity. Those are related product details, but one does not tell you the answer to the other. Check the bank’s terms for the exact frequency offered and how it calculates the amount payable under that arrangement.
Interest paid during the term
A deposit that pays interest during its term may suit you if you want periodic cash flow. Check the exact schedule the bank offers and how it calculates the payout. Do not infer the payment frequency or amount from the headline rate alone.

This option is worth examining if you expect to use the interest as it arrives rather than wait for the end of the term. Make the schedule part of your comparison record: note when the bank says payments occur and whether the terms describe the arrangement you need. RBI permits intervals shorter than quarterly, but that permission is not a promise that a given bank provides a particular monthly, quarterly or other schedule. The bank’s product disclosure is the source for its actual options.
Do not compare one bank’s stated rate with another bank’s payout amount unless the underlying assumptions and calculation method are also clear. If a product page does not explain how it calculates the payout, ask the bank rather than estimating from the headline rate. The available guidance does not establish a universal calculation method or a payout amount for all products.
Interest paid at maturity
A maturity payout may suit you if you do not need interim income and prefer to receive proceeds at the end of the term. Confirm the product’s maturity terms and calculation method with the bank rather than assuming all deposits use the same arrangement.
For a fair comparison, record explicitly that the interest is paid at maturity, where that is the product’s arrangement. This prevents a common mismatch: comparing a product that provides cash during the term with one that pays at the end as though payout timing were identical. Choose based on when you need the cash, not just on the rate displayed beside the product name.
Neither payout pattern is automatically right for every depositor. If regular cash flow matters, investigate the available during-term options; if it does not, a maturity payout may be suitable. These are decision considerations, not claims that every bank offers every arrangement or that one type always pays more. Verify both the available frequency and the calculation method for the specific deposit.
Check early-closure terms before locking in funds
Premature withdrawal can change the interest you receive and may involve a penalty. RBI’s 2025 FAQ says banks may levy a penalty under a comprehensive policy approved by their board, and that the penalty components must be clearly disclosed to depositors when the deposit is accepted. The applicable policy and product terms matter, so read them before placing the deposit. The RBI FAQ on the 2025 Interest Rate on Deposits Directions sets out this disclosure requirement.

For a deposit withdrawn early, the interest is based on the rate applicable to the amount and period the money was actually held, rather than simply the contracted rate. The RBI’s 2025 Handbook of Regulations also states that interest is not required when a deposit is withdrawn before the minimum tenor. These rules make two product details especially important: whether early closure is permitted and what minimum holding period applies before interest is payable.
- Find out whether the deposit can be closed before maturity.
- Read how the bank recalculates interest for the amount and period held.
- Check the penalty policy and the components disclosed at acceptance.
- Identify the minimum tenor before interest is payable.
What happens if you withdraw early?
Do not assume that an early withdrawal simply pays the contracted rate for the time elapsed. Under the RBI’s 2025 handbook description, interest on premature withdrawal is tied to the rate applicable to the amount and period the deposit remained with the institution. The contracted rate alone therefore does not tell you what interest will apply after early closure. Check the product’s terms to understand the bank’s treatment for the amount and actual holding period relevant to your deposit.
A penalty is a separate issue from the interest recalculation. RBI says banks may set a premature-withdrawal penalty under a comprehensive policy approved by their board. The penalty components should be clearly brought to depositors’ attention when the deposit is accepted. Ask what the product’s disclosed penalty means for your payout, and retain or review the terms provided at acceptance rather than relying on a general description of another bank’s policy.
Minimum tenor is another distinct condition. The RBI handbook states that interest is not required where the deposit is withdrawn before the minimum tenor. That makes it important to identify the minimum period before opening the deposit, especially if you are unsure how long you can leave the funds untouched. RBI’s 2025 handbook does not specify one universal minimum tenor: check the chosen product’s rule rather than assuming it is the same across banks or products.
These details are not merely fine print to consult after a change in plans. Before depositing, check whether premature closure is allowed, how interest is determined for the actual period held, what penalty components apply, and whether a minimum holding period is required for interest. If a disclosure is unclear, seek clarification from the bank before accepting the deposit.
Use a consistent comparison record
Record the same fields for every deposit you are considering. If a bank’s product page or terms do not state a value, check with the bank rather than filling the gap with an assumption. A side-by-side record helps you identify whether you are comparing equivalent products and shows which details still need verification.

| Comparison field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Bank and product | The institution and the specific deposit product |
| Amount and tenure | The same amount and period for each option |
| Depositor category | The category whose rate and terms apply to you |
| Quoted rate and check date | The rate shown by the bank and the date you verified it |
| Payout frequency | The available schedule and whether interest is paid during the term or at maturity |
| Early-closure availability | Whether the product permits premature closure |
| Early-closure penalty | The bank’s disclosed penalty policy and how it affects the payout |
| Minimum tenor for interest | The minimum period the deposit must remain to earn interest |
How to fill in the comparison
Use the same amount and tenure for every option wherever possible, and note any exception instead of silently comparing unlike scenarios. Write down the depositor category that the bank’s schedule or product terms cover. This makes it easier to spot when a quoted rate does not apply to your circumstances. Include the product name, because a bank may publish information for more than one deposit arrangement.
For the rate field, copy the current figure from the bank’s own schedule and record the date you checked it. The date is useful because the schedule can change; it does not guarantee the rate will remain available later. Before acting, revisit the bank’s disclosure and the terms for the product you plan to open.
For payout frequency, record both the timing and whether interest is paid during the term or at maturity. A generic entry such as “interest included” is not enough to distinguish a periodic cash-flow product from a maturity payout. Where the bank explains a calculation method, capture that as well; where it does not, treat it as an open question for the bank.
For early access, keep availability, recalculation, penalty and minimum tenor as separate entries. A product could have an early-closure rule, an interest rule and a penalty policy; a single “withdrawal allowed” note would not tell you what happens financially. If the product disclosure does not answer one of these questions, mark it unverified and seek clarification before accepting the deposit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare in an order that reflects your needs
- Decide on cash-flow timing. Work out whether you need interest paid during the term or can wait until maturity.
- Set the scenario. Choose the amount and tenure you are actually considering, and identify the depositor category and product type that apply.
- Check current rates. Compare each bank’s schedule for that same scenario and note the date checked. Use bank disclosures, such as SBI’s deposit-rate page, as bank-specific sources rather than as a ranking of the market.
- Read the access terms. Verify whether early closure is allowed, how interest is recalculated, what penalty applies and what minimum tenor is required for interest.
- Choose across all three dimensions. Weigh rate, payout timing and access needs together instead of selecting on the headline rate alone.
A practical decision check
After filling in the comparison, ask whether each option matches your intended amount, holding period, depositor category and product type. Then ask whether the payout schedule fits your cash-flow needs. Finally, check what the product says about early closure and the minimum tenor before interest is payable. This sequence helps avoid choosing a rate first and discovering later that the payout or access terms do not fit.

Before making a decision, revisit the bank’s current rate schedule and product terms. SBI’s official page is one bank-specific example, and RBI’s guidance supplies the relevant framework for early withdrawal and payout intervals; neither source makes every product identical. No rate table or ranking in this guide should substitute for the terms of the specific deposit you are accepting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Indian fixed deposit has the best interest rate?
There is no single best rate established by this comparison. Match amount, tenure, depositor category and product type, then compare current rates in the banks’ own schedules. Record the date checked, because rates and terms can change. SBI’s rate page is an example of a bank source, not a market-wide ranking.
How often can a fixed deposit pay interest?
RBI rules allow banks to pay term-deposit interest at intervals shorter than quarterly intervals. The exact frequencies available and the calculation method depend on the bank and product, so check the chosen deposit’s current terms rather than assuming every option is offered.

Early withdrawal can change the interest rate used and may trigger a penalty. RBI’s 2025 handbook says interest is based on the rate applicable to the amount and period actually held, rather than simply the contracted rate. Check whether closure is permitted and read the product’s specific recalculation and penalty terms.
Can a bank charge a penalty for premature withdrawal?
RBI’s 2025 FAQ says banks may levy a penalty under a comprehensive policy approved by their board. The penalty components should be clearly disclosed when the deposit is accepted. Review the chosen bank’s disclosure and product terms before placing the deposit.
Will I earn interest if I close a deposit before the minimum tenor?
The RBI’s 2025 handbook says interest is not required when a deposit is withdrawn before the minimum tenor. The minimum tenor is a product detail to verify with the bank; do not assume one universal period applies to every deposit.
What should I check before accepting a fixed deposit?
Compare the same amount, tenure, depositor category and product type; verify the live rate and date checked; confirm the payout schedule and calculation method; and read early-closure availability, interest recalculation, penalty disclosure and minimum-tenor terms.
