Include standing charges, contract terms and any exit fee, then decide whether switching suppliers actually beats a suitable deal from your current provider. The right choice depends on whether you prioritise lower estimated cost, price certainty or flexibility.
What to gather before comparing tariffs
Use a recent bill or your supplier account to find your current tariff, annual consumption, meter type and payment method. Ofgem says a comparison may ask for your postcode, current supplier and tariff, unit costs and annual energy use. Enter gas and electricity consumption separately where possible; a monthly Direct Debit is a payment amount, not a reliable measure of your annual use.
- Annual gas and electricity use in kWh.
- Your postcode, because rates can vary by region.
- Unit rate and daily standing charge for each fuel.
- Payment method and meter setup, including prepayment, smart-meter or multi-rate arrangements.
- Whether you want a fixed or variable tariff, and the current contract end date and exit fee.
Ofgem’s advice is to compare tariffs first: “You should compare energy tariffs to find the one that’s right for you. The best option may be with your current supplier.” See Ofgem’s switching guidance.
How to compare the full annual cost
Compare the unit rate and standing charge for each fuel using your own expected consumption. A lower unit rate can be offset by a higher daily charge, particularly in a low-use home. Compare dual-fuel tariffs with separate gas and electricity suppliers too: bundling can simplify administration, but it is not necessarily cheaper.

A basic estimate for each fuel is:
Annual cost = (annual kWh × unit rate) + (365 × daily standing charge)
Add the gas and electricity estimates, then account for tariff-specific terms or discounts. This is a comparison estimate, not a guaranteed bill; actual costs depend on how much energy you use and the tariff conditions. For a multi-rate tariff, apply each rate to the kWh you expect to use in that period rather than treating it as one price.

When comparing options, check whether the tariff works with your household’s practical needs:
- Meter and payment eligibility: Check requirements for Direct Debit, standard credit or prepayment, and whether the tariff accepts your meter setup. Ask whether a smart meter will remain in smart mode after a supplier change.
- Time-of-use rates: Check the exact peak and off-peak windows. An overnight rate may suit an electric vehicle or storage heating only if the rates and your actual usage schedule make sense.
- Specialist needs: Check eligibility and terms for electric-vehicle, heat-pump or renewable-energy tariffs. If you generate electricity, compare export arrangements separately.
- Customer service: If service is a reason for leaving, compare complaints and contact performance alongside price. Ofgem points consumers to Citizens Advice’s supplier comparisons.
- Comparison coverage: Different comparison sites may show different suppliers and tariffs. Check more than one site or the supplier’s own offer, and distinguish paid placements from the full set of options.
For a snapshot of the Great Britain price cap, Ofgem’s figures for 1 October to 31 December 2026 set the typical annual benchmark at £1,723 for a Direct Debit, dual-fuel household with average use in England, Scotland and Wales. It is not a cap on an individual household’s total bill: the cap regulates unit rates and standing charges for default standard variable tariffs. Ofgem lists typical rates for that period as electricity 26.32p/kWh and 54.83p/day standing charge, and gas 7.97p/kWh and 29.68p/day. Rates vary by region and payment method; the displayed prices include 5% VAT on gas and no VAT on electricity from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, so they are not directly comparable with earlier periods. Check Ofgem’s price-cap rates and standing charges for the applicable period. Northern Ireland is outside this Great Britain cap.

Should you choose a fixed or variable tariff?
A fixed tariff holds the agreed unit rates and standing charges for the contract term; it does not fix the total bill, which still changes with usage. A variable tariff’s rates can change. Fixing may make budgeting more predictable, but if market rates fall, a fixed deal can leave you paying more than a later variable tariff. Compare the fixed offer with the variable option available to you, and weigh the value of rate certainty against the contract term and any exit fee. Citizens Advice explains the tariff trade-offs in its guide to choosing an energy tariff.
Check exit fees and contract timing
In Great Britain, Citizens Advice says you can switch from a fixed tariff without an exit fee when 49 days or less remain on the contract. If 50 days or more remain, an exit fee may apply. Check the contract or confirm the fee with your supplier before applying; terms can vary. Compare any fee with the estimated savings over the time you expect to stay on the new tariff, and check whether a fee applies separately to gas and electricity.

Ofgem’s 2025 report on 2024 tariff-choice research found that, in a stated-choice exercise involving 3,235 respondents, the probability of choosing a deal with £300 annual savings and a five-star supplier was 90% without an exit fee and 61% with a £300 exit fee, with other features held at an optimum level. This is an experimental response, not a forecast of real-world switching. The result illustrates why an exit fee can change how attractive a deal appears; it does not tell you whether a particular tariff is worthwhile. Read the Ofgem tariff-choice report.

- Check your current deal. Find your tariff name, contract end date, unit rates, standing charges, annual use and any exit fee on your bill or online account.
- Compare your current supplier’s options too. You may find a better-fitting tariff without changing supplier.
- Confirm compatibility. Check the new tariff’s meter and payment conditions, including prepayment eligibility, smart-meter operation and any multi-rate meter requirements.
- Check the terms and timing. Calculate the expected saving after any exit fee. If you are near the end of a fixed contract, confirm the contract-specific fee and how to align the start date.
- Apply to the new supplier or through a comparison service. In Great Britain, the new supplier normally contacts your old supplier to arrange the move; you do not need to initiate the switch with the old supplier.
- Use the cooling-off period if needed. A 14-day cooling-off period applies after you agree to the new contract. Citizens Advice says a switch requested as soon as possible should complete within five working days, subject to its start-time rule. If you want the change to coincide with your fixed tariff’s end date, ask the new supplier about a specific date.
- Record a meter reading on switch day. Keep it for your records and provide it as requested. Pay the old supplier’s final bill and check that any account credit is returned. Citizens Advice says the final bill should arrive within six weeks and account credit should be refunded within ten working days after that bill is sent.
See Citizens Advice’s switching guidance for further details on eligibility, timing and final bills. The Energy Saving Trust guide to switching was last updated on 26 June 2026.

Northern Ireland has a separate comparison and switching route
Do not apply Great Britain’s Ofgem price cap or switching timeline to Northern Ireland. Use the Utility Regulator’s comparison guidance and the Consumer Council comparison tool and price comparison tables. Electricity customers can compare available suppliers; gas supplier choice depends on where they live, with the Utility Regulator identifying the Greater Belfast area for gas supplier choice.
The Utility Regulator says Northern Ireland customers have up to 10 working days to cancel after signing, and a switch should complete within 15 working days after the cooling-off period. Contract terms may specify cancellation charges. Check the regulator’s Northern Ireland switching guidance and local supplier terms before applying.
Quick Recap
A final check before you apply
- Have I compared estimated annual cost using my own annual use, not just the unit rate or monthly payment?
- Have I checked unit rates and standing charges for both fuels, on the correct regional, meter and payment basis?
- Do the contract term, exit fee and tariff type suit how long I expect to stay and how much rate certainty I want?
- Will the tariff work with my meter, payment method and any time-of-use or export needs?
- Have I checked whether my current supplier already offers a suitable deal, and whether other comparison services show additional options?
- Am I following the correct switching route for Great Britain or Northern Ireland?
