A trustworthy list of seven electric cars and eight hybrids to buy instead of a Tesla Model 3 needs named models, model years, prices and specifications. The available HotCars-related listing confirms that a story with the original title exists, but it does not show the recommended vehicles or the reasons for choosing them. The Flipboard listing therefore cannot support a verified 15-car recommendation list. What a buyer can do is compare the right vehicle categories and costs before treating any alternative as a better fit.
First, separate electric cars from the two kinds of hybrids
“Electric car” and “hybrid” do not describe the same fueling or charging experience. NIST’s 2024 literature review distinguishes battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and non-plug-in hybrids. It identifies the Tesla Model 3 as an example of a BEV. NIST’s review, surfaced through ResearchGate, provides these category definitions:

| Category | Powertrain and charging | What to check as a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| BEV | Battery-powered, with no gasoline engine; the battery is charged by plugging in. | Whether you can charge where you park, and whether the vehicle’s range and charging access fit your regular trips. |
| PHEV | Combines a plug-in rechargeable battery with a gasoline engine. | Whether you can plug in often enough to make the rechargeable battery relevant to your routine, and whether the gasoline engine suits trips beyond that routine. |
| Non-plug-in hybrid | Combines an electric motor and gasoline engine, but its battery cannot be charged by plugging in. | Whether you prefer a gasoline-fueled vehicle that does not require a charging routine. |
These are category distinctions, not a ranking. A PHEV and a conventional hybrid may both have gasoline engines, but only the PHEV can recharge its battery from an external plug. A non-plug-in hybrid is not a substitute for home or public charging in the way a BEV or PHEV is.
Compare ownership costs, not just the sticker price
There is no supported, model-by-model price or running-cost comparison for the 15 vehicles implied by the original title. For any particular candidate, use the same assumptions and calculate the costs that matter to your household:
#1 Best Overall
- Purchase cost: Compare the exact model year, trim and quoted price. A model name alone is not enough to establish what a buyer will pay.
- Energy or fuel: Estimate electricity and gasoline spending using your own expected driving and the rates that apply where you live. For a PHEV, make assumptions about how often you will plug in; for a BEV, include the charging arrangement you expect to use.
- Charging access: Check whether you can charge at home, at work or near regular destinations. If you cannot plug in conveniently, that can change whether a plug-in vehicle fits your routine.
- Practicality: Compare passenger and cargo needs, regular trip distances, and the availability of a suitable vehicle in your market.
- Ownership terms: Verify warranty coverage and availability for the exact model year and location rather than assuming they are the same across vehicles.
Those inputs are necessary for a meaningful comparison; the evidence available here does not establish values for any named alternative. Without the models, location and model years, a numerical total-cost ranking would be guesswork.
What the available market statistic does—and does not—say
NIST’s 2024 review reports almost 3.3 million combined U.S. BEV and PHEV sales in 2022, including 2.3 million BEVs, or 70% of that combined total. This is a historical U.S. figure for 2022, not a current sales count or evidence that one vehicle is a better purchase than another. The review does not provide the 15 models, current prices or specifications needed to substantiate the original list’s recommendations.

What a verified alternative list should include
Before relying on a “best alternatives” roundup, look for the details that make its picks comparable:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- All 15 model names, with model years and the market or country covered.
- The exact trim and price basis for each vehicle.
- Range or fuel-economy figures tied to a stated source and measurement basis.
- Charging or fueling requirements that distinguish BEVs, PHEVs and non-plug-in hybrids.
- Warranty, availability and practical-use details relevant to the stated market.
- A clear explanation of which buyer each vehicle is meant to suit, rather than an unsupported universal ranking.
Until those particulars are available, the title alone cannot establish which seven electric cars or eight hybrids the publisher selected—or whether any would be a better financial fit than a Tesla Model 3 for a particular buyer.
