Then add the cost of the extras you expect to use, such as gratuities, drinks, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and excursions. Neither cruise line is universally cheaper: the result depends on the sailing, cabin, market, promotion, and which included perks matter to you.
Start with two genuinely comparable sailings
Choose a Carnival sailing and a Royal Caribbean sailing that line up on the details that shape the price. A lower headline fare may reflect a different itinerary, date, cabin, or promotion rather than a cheaper equivalent cruise.
- Destination and itinerary
- Departure date and cruise length
- Embarkation port
- Cabin category and occupancy
- Currency and booking market
- Promotion terms, including cabin, occupancy, and booking-window restrictions
Ship matters too: dining venues, activities, and some services can vary by ship. If you cannot find a close match, note the differences rather than treating the fares as like-for-like.
Compare the final price, not the headline fare
Use the current booking quote or checkout total for each matched sailing, and inspect its itemization. Carnival’s ticket terms distinguish Cruise Fare, Required Cruise Fees and Expenses, and Government Taxes and Fees; they define the Total Cruise Price as those three components combined. Read Carnival’s ticket contract and check the live version, since terms can change.

Royal Caribbean says taxes, fees, and port expenses vary by sailing and advises customers to check current pricing. The cited Royal Caribbean tax guidance is UK-specific, so its examples should not be applied to bookings in other markets. See Royal Caribbean’s tax, fee, and port expense guidance.
Fare definitions also depend on market. For example, the cited Royal Caribbean guest terms are for Canada and describe cruise fare as including carriage, full board, and ordinary food and entertainment, while excluding taxes and fees and identifying other paid items. Those Canada terms are not universal booking rules; consult the terms shown for your own market.
Account for the extras you expect to buy
After recording each checkout total, estimate only the additional purchases relevant to your trip. Use the price shown for that sailing and market rather than assuming a bundle or package will save money.
| Cost to check | How to compare it |
|---|---|
| Gratuities | Check the line’s current guidance, whether gratuities are prepaid or posted to the onboard account, and how the amount applies to your cabin. |
| Drinks | Separate included basic drinks from alcoholic, specialty, or other drinks you expect to order; compare a package only against your likely purchases. |
| Internet | Check the sailing’s available plan and price if you expect to connect. |
| Specialty dining | Add the cost only if you plan to eat at venues beyond complimentary dining. |
| Excursions | Compare the shore activities you would actually book; destination access does not make every excursion free. |
| Other purchases | Include relevant items such as spa services, photos, casino play, arcade play, or bingo, but do not add them if you would not use them. |
Gratuities are a distinct line item
Carnival’s official help page accessed October 4, 2026, recommends onboard gratuities of $17 USD per person per day for standard staterooms and $19 USD per person per day for suites. Carnival says guests may prepay or have the recommended amount posted to the onboard account. These are Carnival’s recommended guidelines, not a Carnival-versus-Royal comparison; verify current amounts and the treatment for your booking.

Build an apples-to-apples comparison
- Save the matched quotes. Record the date you checked, market, currency, itinerary, cabin, guest count, and promotion terms.
- Write down each checkout total. Use the item’s current displayed total and inspect the breakdown for taxes, fees, and port expenses.
- Add likely onboard spending. Estimate gratuities and only the drinks, Wi-Fi, meals, excursions, or other purchases you expect to make.
- Assess the inclusions. Give value to included perks you would otherwise pay for; do not count unused benefits as savings.
- Recheck before booking. Fares, taxes, fees, offers, and onboard policies can change. Confirm the final invoice and current terms before purchase.
The useful comparison is the cost of each trip as you would actually take it: final sailing price plus relevant extras, weighed against the included services you personally value. There is no established universal winner or average savings figure for Carnival versus Royal Caribbean.
