To clean Nike sneakers safely, first identify the upper material. Brush away loose dirt, then use a mild soapy solution only on materials suited to damp cleaning; keep suede mostly dry. Wipe away residue and let the shoes air-dry at room temperature. Nike does not recommend washing shoes in a washing machine.
What you need before you start
- A soft-bristle shoe brush or clean toothbrush for loose dirt and gentle cleaning.
- A clean cloth, preferably microfiber, to wipe away soap and residue.
- Mild soap and water for suitable leather, knit, or mesh—not as a general cleaner for suede.
- For suede, a suede brush and suede rubber or pencil eraser for surface marks.
Check which materials make up the upper before choosing a method. If a shoe combines materials, treat each panel with the gentlest method appropriate to that material. Nike’s care articles provide material-level guidance rather than instructions for every model, so follow any care information supplied with your specific pair.

How to clean Nike sneakers step by step
- Remove loose dirt. Brush gently before adding moisture so grit is not worked farther into the upper. Let wet mud dry before brushing suede.
- Choose the method for the material. Use a mild soapy solution on suitable leather, knit, or mesh. For suede, start with dry brushing and a suede eraser instead.
- Clean gently. Use light pressure and avoid aggressive scrubbing. On knit or mesh, brush in the direction of the material.
- Wipe away residue. For damp cleaning, use a clean cloth to remove soap from the shoe.
- Air-dry. Leave the shoes at room temperature. Do not use a clothes dryer or another heat source.
Adjust the method to the upper material

Can you wash Nike sneakers in a washing machine?
No. Nike says, “Nike does not recommend washing shoes in the washing machine.” Its guidance cites possible damage to delicate materials; bulky sneakers may also damage a washing machine. How to dry them without causing damage
After cleaning, wipe off remaining soap and let the sneakers air-dry at room temperature. Avoid the dryer and excess heat, which can damage or deform shoes. Nike’s cited care instructions do not specify a fixed drying time, so allow them to dry fully before wearing them.

- Using one cleaning method on every material, especially applying a wet soapy treatment to suede.
- Scrubbing hard enough to abrade leather or disturb knit fibers.
