Start with the sneaker’s exact materials and the maker’s care instructions. There is no safe universal cleaner: one brand may allow a damp cloth on some leather or canvas, while another advises avoiding water, creams, and soaps. For mixed-material shoes, follow the most delicate panel’s limits. When a stain or finish is uncertain, pause and contact the maker or an authorized repair professional rather than risk a permanent mark.
Before cleaning, identify the materials and check the maker’s instructions
- Identify every upper panel. Check the product page or label for smooth or grained leather, patent leather, metallic or exotic leather, suede or nubuck, canvas, satin, mesh, or synthetic material. Treat mixed-material shoes panel by panel, using the most delicate panel as the limit for the whole shoe.
- Read the specific brand’s care guidance. Instructions differ: Louis Vuitton’s shoe-care guidance permits a soft damp cloth on some leather and canvas, while Gucci’s general shoe guidance recommends a soft dry cloth and says to avoid water, alcohol, acetone, corrosive substances, creams, and soaps. CHANEL’s shoe-care instructions allow a gentle detergent solution for patent leather but caution against heat, sunlight, and humidity.
- Remove loose dust gently. Use a clean, soft brush or cloth that will not scratch the finish or shed dye. Avoid abrasive household tools and forceful scrubbing.
- Spot-test only an allowed cleaner. If the maker permits a product, test it first in an inconspicuous area. Saphir’s cleaner instructions also call for a spot test; that product guidance is not proof of compatibility with every designer sneaker.
How to clean suede and nubuck
Start dry. Brush gently in the direction of the nap to lift surface dirt without flattening or roughing up the fibers. Louis Vuitton recommends a soft shoe brush and says a rubber brush may help with light surface stains. CHANEL recommends dry brushing in the direction of the fibers with a shoe sponge or suede cloth.
Do not treat suede or nubuck like smooth leather. CHANEL notes that lambskin and calfskin suede are sensitive to liquids, stains, and color migration; ETQ’s care guide advises keeping water away from suede and nubuck uppers. If gentle dry brushing does not help, ask the maker or a specialist before trying a liquid cleaner. Do not assume a water-repellent spray is suitable for every finish.
How to clean smooth, grained, and patent leather
Follow the exact instructions for the shoe and finish; brand advice is not interchangeable.

- Smooth or grained leather: Louis Vuitton says some surface stains can be wiped with a soft damp cloth, then left to dry fully before applying a high-quality colorless cream. CHANEL advises a small amount of colorless polish for certain soft leathers and warns against products that may alter the finish. Gucci’s general advice is more restrictive: use a soft dry cloth and avoid water, creams, soaps, alcohol, and acetone.
- Patent leather: Louis Vuitton recommends a lightly dampened soft cloth followed by a clean, dry cloth. CHANEL says to use a sponge with water and gentle detergent, then dry softly. Avoid contact between light- and dark-pigmented materials to reduce transfer risk.
Avoid colored polish, solvents, alcohol, acetone, abrasive paste, or unapproved conditioner on an expensive upper. The brands’ cautions do not mean every such product damages every shoe; they do mean you should not assume it is safe for yours.
How to clean canvas, satin, and other textile panels
Do not soak or machine-wash luxury sneakers. Louis Vuitton warns that washing fabric shoes can cause damage, color migration, or sole detachment. Its guidance allows a brush or lightly damp cloth for cotton canvas and a very lightly damp cloth with gentle circular motions for satin; hard rubbing may remove satin’s anti-stain treatment.

Some brands set stricter limits. Gucci directs owners to contact the company or visit a boutique for care advice on canvas, velvet, and suede. Follow the instructions for the specific shoe rather than generalizing from one textile to another.
Can you use water or sneaker cleaner on suede?
Do not apply water or a liquid cleaner to suede or nubuck unless the shoe’s maker explicitly permits it. Begin with dry brushing; if that fails, consult the maker or a specialist. A cleaner advertised for delicate materials is not automatically compatible with your sneaker’s particular finish, color, or construction.

Saphir describes its Sneaker Cleaner for several listed delicate materials, recommends a brush or technical cloth, and instructs users to spot-test and let treated shoes air-dry naturally. These are the product’s directions, not independent evidence that it works safely on every luxury sneaker. Check the shoe maker’s guidance first.
How to dry luxury sneakers after they get wet
Blot moisture gently with a soft, absorbent cloth; do not scrub. Let the shoes dry naturally away from heaters, direct sunlight, and other direct heat. CHANEL recommends an absorbent, non-pilling cloth and cautions against heat and sunlight. ETQ advises drying at room temperature without a heater or direct sun.

Saphir’s instruction to air-dry for at least 12 hours applies to shoes treated with its cleaner. It is not a universal drying time for every shoe or cleaning method; the other brand guidance cited here does not establish one.

Stop and seek advice if the finish is unknown, the shoe is valuable or made of delicate leather, a stain persists, color has transferred, the sole is separating, or the maker prohibits the treatment you were considering. Gucci says its care and repair service begins with an evaluation for products bought from Gucci.com, Gucci stores, and authorized Gucci retailers; a Client Advisor can discuss possible solutions. How to store and maintain luxury sneakers
- Store shoes clean and dry in a cool, dry place. Follow the maker’s storage advice: Louis Vuitton recommends felt pouches; CHANEL recommends the original box; Gucci recommends tissue paper, its flannel dust bag, and the original box, with nothing stacked on top.
- Use a shoe tree for structured shoes if the maker recommends one. Louis Vuitton and CHANEL both advise using shoe trees.
- Let shoes air out between wears. Louis Vuitton recommends rotating shoes every two days, while CHANEL advises against wearing the same pair several days in a row; these are brand recommendations, not a proven universal schedule.
