How to Choose the Right Hashtags for a Post

Choose hashtags that describe your post, fit its audience, and work on the platform you’re using. Check live results, use CamelCase for multiword tags, and follow platform-specific guidance on quantity.

Choose hashtags that accurately describe your post and make sense to the audience you want to reach on that specific platform. A useful short list starts with the post’s topic, then gets checked for relevance, search availability, unintended meanings, and readability. There is no one hashtag count that applies everywhere.

What makes a hashtag the right fit?

A hashtag is a label for a keyword or topic. On X, hashtags help index content and may make posts easier to find through search, according to the X Help Center. The best choice is not necessarily the most popular tag: it is one that accurately describes the post and fits the conversation people will find under it.

Assess each candidate against these criteria:

  • Content fit: Does the tag describe what the post actually says or shows?
  • Audience fit: Would someone following or searching this tag reasonably expect to find this post?
  • Availability: Does the tag work as a searchable or browsable tag on the platform you plan to use?
  • Readability and safety: Is it easy to understand, and does it avoid unrelated or unintended meanings?

How to choose hashtags, step by step

  1. Define the post’s topic, audience, and goal. Write down what the post is about, who it is for, and what you want it to do. For example, a local event announcement might have a specific event topic and location, while a tutorial might focus on the skill it teaches.
  2. Make a small candidate list from the content itself. Start with a precise topic phrase. Add a community, location, event, or branded phrase only when it genuinely applies. A broader tag can help describe the context, but do not use it if it makes the post seem to be about something it is not.
  3. Search each candidate on the platform where you will post. Review representative posts and ask whether your post belongs in that conversation. Reject tags whose results are dominated by unrelated topics or whose meaning could mislead your audience. The CDC’s Environmental Health Social Media Toolkit advises checking for unintended meanings or different uses before choosing a hashtag.
  4. Confirm that the tag is available there. Do not assume that a tag searchable on one service works the same way elsewhere. Instagram’s Help Center says public posts with hashtags can appear on corresponding hashtag pages, but some hashtags may not be searchable. Check the live results rather than relying on the tag’s apparent popularity.
  5. Make multiword tags easy to read. Hashtags do not use spaces to separate words. Capitalize the first letter of each word in a multiword tag, as in #ChooseTheRightHashtag. The CDC says this “camel case” makes hashtags more accessible by helping assistive devices such as screen readers distinguish the words.
  6. Use only the candidates that add useful context. Follow the guidance for the platform you are using rather than copying a count from another network. If a tag is vague, redundant, or only loosely related, leave it out.
  7. Review performance only against a defined goal. If measurement matters, compare posts with similar topics and objectives over time using available platform analytics or a social listening tool. A relationship between a hashtag and a post’s results does not prove the hashtag caused those results.

How many hashtags should you use?

There is no universal number. The X Help Center recommends no more than two hashtags per post as a best practice, while noting that users may include more. That is X-specific guidance, not a cross-platform rule. Instagram and other platforms have their own behavior and guidance, so check the current recommendations for the service you are using.

Third-party advice can differ by network. For example, Sprout Social’s May 2026 guide suggests varying counts across platforms. Treat such ranges as vendor guidance rather than official limits from the platforms. The practical test is whether each tag adds a relevant description or discovery path; do not add tags just to reach a target count.

What to avoid when selecting a hashtag

  • Popularity without relevance: A busy tag is a poor fit if its posts do not match your content.
  • Unintended meanings: A tag can be used in a different conversation than you expect. Check its current results before posting.
  • Unreadable multiword phrases: Use CamelCase so word boundaries are visible and easier for screen readers to interpret.
  • Assuming platform behavior is identical: A tag may be searchable on one platform and unavailable on another.
  • Treating correlation as proof: Changes in reach or engagement do not establish that a hashtag caused the change.

How to tell whether your choices are working

Decide what success means before comparing posts: for example, whether the goal is discovery, engagement, or participation in a relevant conversation. Compare posts with similar subjects and goals over time, and use analytics or social listening only if they help answer that question. Sprout Social reports that 52% of social media users rely on social media to find user-generated content and personal experiences, citing its Q3 2025 Sprout Pulse Survey in an article published May 7, 2026. That figure describes a reported survey finding; it does not show that adding hashtags will produce more reach for a particular post.
