Choose RAM and storage around the work your PC will actually do, then check what your processor, motherboard and budget support. RAM is temporary working space for active apps; storage keeps your files when the PC is off. More capacity in either one helps only with the limits it addresses, and the highest advertised speed is not automatically worth paying for.
What do RAM and storage do?
RAM, or memory, holds data that the processor and active applications need to access quickly. It is volatile: its contents are lost when the PC powers off. Storage—an SSD or hard drive—keeps the operating system, applications and files between sessions. Microsoft explains that apps and files are loaded from slower storage into memory for faster access, and notes, “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.” Microsoft’s memory guidance describes the distinction.
That means RAM and storage are not interchangeable. If your active workload runs short of RAM, adding disk space will not provide more working memory. If you are running out of room for games, photos or project files, adding RAM will not make those files fit.
How much RAM do I need?
There is no capacity that is right for every PC. The following are starting points, not guarantees: actual needs vary with the applications, files and number of tasks you keep open.

| Use case | Starting point | What the guidance means |
|---|---|---|
| General use and longer-term use | 8GB, in Microsoft’s broad consumer guidance | Microsoft says 8GB is recommended for keeping a device running long term. It is not a promise that 8GB will suit every modern workload. |
| Mainstream use and gaming | 16GB, for many buyers | Tom’s Hardware’s gaming RAM guide, last updated October 2, 2026, describes 16GB as sufficient for many gaming and mainstream productivity users. Specific games and simultaneous tasks can change the requirement. |
| Photo or video editing, high-performance work, or heavy multitasking | 16GB or more; consider 32GB for heavier workloads | Microsoft suggests 16GB or more for editing and higher-performance projects. Tom’s Hardware says heavy multitasking and prosumer work may benefit from 32GB. These are workload-based recommendations, not universal minimums. |

Windows 11’s published minimum hardware requirements list 4GB of RAM, but that is an operating-system minimum, not a sensible target for most current multitasking or storage-heavy builds. Microsoft’s minimum-requirements document should not be treated as a buying recommendation.

How to choose compatible RAM without paying for unusable speed
Start with the platform, not a speed label on a product page. A kit must match the motherboard and processor’s memory support. Faster data rates can help in some configurations, but the gains vary; do not assume that every CPU or workload benefits equally from a higher tier.
- Check the motherboard and CPU specifications. Confirm the supported DDR generation, DIMM type, capacity, module count and memory-speed support. DDR generations are not interchangeable.
- Choose the capacity you need as one kit. Tom’s Hardware’s current buying guide advises buying one kit at the desired capacity rather than combining separately sold kits. Mixing modules may introduce instability, even when the labels appear similar.
- Check the upgrade path before buying less. Verify how many memory slots the board has, how many will remain free, and whether the capacity you plan to add later is supported. Do not assume a later upgrade will be simple or compatible.
- Compare total kit prices after compatibility checks. A higher speed tier is not a saving if your platform cannot use it as intended or the workload does not benefit enough to justify the extra cost.
For price context—not a current quote—Tom’s Hardware reported approximate US-market PCPartPicker average prices of $116 in August 2025 and $528 in August 2026 for a 2×16GB DDR5-5600 kit. Those are historical monthly averages reported in 2026, not guaranteed checkout prices, a forecast, or an October 2026 retail price. Check current listings for your region and compare compatible kits at the time you buy. Tom’s Hardware’s price report provides the cited figures.

How much storage do I need?
Estimate the space your own files and applications occupy rather than buying a capacity by habit. Microsoft’s storage guidance distinguishes light browsing and everyday work from larger video and other files, and notes that using cloud storage can reduce how much you need to keep locally. Microsoft’s guide to SSDs, HDDs and storage does not prescribe one capacity for every user.
- List the applications and games you expect to install.
- Estimate the space for photos, videos, downloads, work projects and other files you want available offline.
- Allow room for future additions and free-space headroom rather than planning to fill the drive completely.
- Decide which files can live in cloud storage or on a separate drive, and account for the cost and inconvenience of managing them there.
Then compare the cost of buying the capacity now with the cost and effort of adding another compatible drive later. Check that the board has an available connector and slot, and that adding a drive will not disable or share another connection you need.

SSD or HDD, SATA or NVMe?
Capacity and interface are separate decisions. Microsoft characterizes SSDs as smaller and faster than HDDs; the right choice depends on what you store and do with it. An SSD is a practical choice for an operating-system or application drive where responsiveness matters. A larger HDD may suit files where capacity and cost matter more than fast access. Compare usable capacity, interface, form factor and price for the particular workload instead of assuming that one type wins every use.
For games, a faster SSD is not automatically a worthwhile upgrade. In an August 8, 2026 Tom’s Hardware editorial test across 11 games, SATA SSD utilization sometimes exceeded 80% at 4K without degrading performance relative to PCIe drives in the reported results. The test deliberately used 16GB of system memory to increase storage pressure. It is bounded evidence from those games and conditions, not a general finding for large file transfers, workstation projects, DirectStorage cases or every drive. Read the test and its methodology before applying its results to a different workload.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before buying an M.2 drive, verify the motherboard’s exact support. The M.2 connector’s presence alone does not establish that it accepts the drive you want: check whether the slot supports SATA, NVMe or both, the supported PCIe generation, drive length, and any board-specific lane sharing or port-disablement behavior. A drive advertised with a faster interface is not useful if the slot or platform cannot support it as expected.
Quick Recap
A budget-first buying sequence
- Write down the workload. Include typical applications, games, editing tasks, number of simultaneous tasks, and the files you keep locally.
- Set a capacity target from that workload. Use the RAM guidance as a starting point, and estimate storage from installed software, local files and headroom.
- Confirm compatibility. Check CPU and motherboard memory support, RAM slots, storage interfaces, M.2 length and board-specific sharing behavior.
- Price compatible options at the same capacity. Compare total kit or drive price and cost per usable gigabyte where capacity is comparable; do not let a headline speed tier substitute for workload fit.
- Choose a realistic upgrade plan. Buy enough now for the work you expect, but only rely on a later expansion if the board has the required slots and supports the intended parts.
