Choose an exchange account if you want a provider to manage custody and account access; choose a self-custody software wallet for direct control with convenient everyday access; choose a hardware wallet if you want to sign with a dedicated device. The key question is who controls the keys—and what recovery, security, and XRPL compatibility responsibilities come with that choice.
What does “XRP wallet” mean?
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL). A wallet is the way you access and authorize transactions involving an XRPL account, but the label alone does not tell you who controls its keys. An exchange app can look like a wallet while the provider holds the keys and records customer balances in its own books rather than maintaining a separate on-ledger account for each customer. A self-custody wallet gives the user control of the account’s secret keys.

Custody and device type are separate dimensions. “Software” or “hardware” describes how keys are used; “custodial” or “self-custody” describes who controls them. An exchange service can use a software interface while remaining custodial. Check a product’s actual custody and signing arrangements rather than relying on its marketing label. XRPL’s wallet guidance explains these distinctions.

| Option | Who controls the keys? | Convenience | Main tradeoff | Often suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange account | The provider | Integrated trading and managed account access; password reset may be available | You depend on the provider’s custody, account security, policies, and access | People who value an integrated service and accept trusting the provider |
| Self-custody software wallet | You | Convenient access and wallet features for regular use | You must protect the keys and the device; XRPL has no recovery option for lost keys | People who want direct control and frequent access |
| Self-custody hardware wallet | You; signing takes place on the device | A dedicated device can be disconnected when not signing | Setup and physical-device handling add work; XRPL transaction support varies | People who prioritize key isolation, including for longer-term holding or signing |

How to choose based on control and recovery
Choose an exchange account for managed access
With a custodial exchange account, the provider holds the keys and manages access to the assets on your behalf. A password reset may help restore access to the provider account, but it is not the same as recovering keys to an individual XRPL account. You rely on the service’s account security, policies, and continued availability. An exchange balance may be an entry in the provider’s internal records, not an XRPL account that you personally control.
Choose software for direct control and regular use
In a self-custody software wallet, you control the secret keys and manage your XRPL account directly. That provides more direct control over transactions the ledger permits, but it also makes you responsible for securing the keys and the device. If you lose the keys, XRPL has no mechanism to restore them or reverse that loss.

Choose hardware when signing-device isolation matters
A hardware wallet is a dedicated device intended to keep secret keys on the device while transactions are signed. Disconnecting it when it is not in use can reduce exposure to a compromised phone or computer. It does not remove the need to protect credentials, backups, and the device itself, and the particular model and wallet app must support the XRPL actions you intend to use.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAccount for XRPL reserves before funding
For mainnet, XRPL’s reserve documentation listed a 1 XRP base reserve and a 0.2 XRP owner reserve per ledger item when checked on October 4, 2026. XRP committed to reserve cannot be sent while reserved. The required amounts can change through validator fee voting, and other networks may use different values, so confirm the current requirements and the account’s ledger objects before funding or transacting.

- 2 XRP COLD STORAGE COINS FOR FLEXIBLE STORAGE - This 2-pack includes two physical XRP cold storage coins, ideal for splitting holdings, keeping one as a backup, or giving one as a gift while maintaining a dedicated XRP-only storage format.
- NO ELECTRONICS FOR OFFLINE XRP STORAGE - No battery, no Bluetooth, no USB, and no firmware updates. These stainless steel XRP coins are designed for offline cold storage and keep key information separate from internet-connected devices.
- NO SEED PHRASE AND NO PIN OR PASSWORD - Ballet simplifies XRP cold storage with no 12 or 24-word seed phrase to write down and no PIN or password to remember, making setup easier for beginners and long-term holders.
- WORKS WITH BALLET CRYPTO APP FOR XRP - Use the Ballet Crypto App for iOS and Android to scan each coin, view the XRP address, load XRP, check balances, and transfer XRP through a guided workflow.
- TAMPER-EVIDENT SECURITY LAYERS - Each coin includes peel-to-reveal protection that helps provide a clear visual signal if the private key area has been accessed. Once opened to move funds out, the coin should not be reused for secure cold storage.
If an exchange provides custody and you do not have an individual ledger account, XRPL says the individual account reserve requirement does not apply to you. That does not mean an exchange account has no costs: trading, withdrawals, and other provider charges or rules are separate and depend on the provider.
Check security and compatibility before choosing
- Keep secret keys secret. Never give a key or seed to a website, support agent, or signing service. Anyone who obtains it can control the account. XRPL’s secure-signing guidance also cautions against storing keys in plaintext or sending them over the internet.
- Verify the complete signing setup. Check the exact device, its current firmware, and the wallet app for support of the transactions you expect to make. Some signing devices do not support every transaction type.
- Assess the software and provider. A self-custody wallet still depends on software quality and update practices; supply-chain attacks can affect wallet updates or dependencies. Custodial users should assess the provider’s security and policies as well.
- Consider separating uses. XRPL’s signing guidance identifies separate addresses with different security configurations as an option for holdings with different values or purposes.
- Verify third-party practices. Provider compliance, data security, and privacy practices differ. Review the service’s own current terms and documentation; availability and requirements may also depend on your location.
A practical decision path
- If you want managed access and trading integration, compare exchange providers’ custody arrangements, account security, access policies, and fees. Confirm whether your balance is held in an individual XRPL account or recorded on the provider’s books.
- If you want to control your XRPL keys yourself, decide whether a software wallet’s everyday convenience fits your ability to secure and back up the keys. Do not proceed unless you understand that lost keys cannot be recovered through XRPL.
- If you want a dedicated signing device, confirm current XRPL compatibility for the exact hardware, firmware, wallet app, and transaction types you need before buying or moving funds.
- Before funding a self-custody account, check the current network reserve and any owner-reserve requirements for the account’s ledger items. Do not treat a reserve figure as permanent.
What the choice does—and does not—solve
No wallet type removes security responsibility. Custodial users rely on provider safeguards and account access; self-custody users rely on key protection, and hardware users must also manage a physical device and confirm transaction support. This is a wallet-selection guide, not individualized investment, tax, legal, or security advice. XRPL’s overview of the XRP Ledger advises due diligence on third-party providers.
