For a large purchase, first check whether the payment is to a merchant or another person, then confirm the merchant’s eligibility and the limits set by your bank, issuer and app. NPCI’s general UPI FAQ states a limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, but higher ceilings apply only to specified eligible transactions—not to every large retail payment. A headline maximum is not a guarantee that your payment will be accepted.
The practical question is not simply whether UPI supports a high number. It is whether this merchant, this payment category, your funding source and your bank’s current rules line up for this transaction. Confirm those details before you authorize the payment, especially if the purchase is time-sensitive or you are expected to release goods once payment is made.

Start with the type of payment
UPI does not have one universal limit that applies to every transfer. A payment to a shop or other merchant is treated differently from a person-to-person transfer, and certain transaction categories may have higher ceilings. The first question is therefore not which UPI app to use; it is whether the recipient and purchase qualify for the limit you need.
NPCI’s FAQ gives the ordinary baseline as up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Its August 2025 circular, OC 185B, sets enhanced limits for specified categories and verified merchants, while stating that person-to-person transfers remain under existing guidance. The circular also allows banks to set lower internal limits within NPCI’s ceilings. NPCI’s UPI FAQ and NPCI’s 28 August 2025 circular, OC 185B are the relevant starting points.
That distinction matters when a purchase is arranged through an individual’s UPI ID or phone number. The fact that the money is intended for a purchase does not by itself make a transfer to an individual an eligible merchant payment. NPCI’s circular says person-to-person transfers remain under existing guidance, so do not rely on a merchant-category ceiling for a transfer that is actually person-to-person. Ask the seller for the merchant payment route if the transaction is meant to be a merchant purchase, and confirm what the payment screen identifies before proceeding.
It is also useful to separate the network’s ceiling from the amount you personally can send. NPCI sets an overall ceiling for applicable transaction types, but a bank may apply a lower internal limit. An app may display or enforce limits relevant to your account, and an issuer may apply its own rules if you are funding the payment with a linked card. A maximum in a public announcement is therefore only one part of the check.
What the higher limits do—and do not—mean
The Government of India’s Press Information Bureau reported that, effective 15 September 2025, select verified merchant categories can receive payments up to ₹10 lakh per day. That is a category-specific daily ceiling, not the ordinary per-transaction limit and not a promise that any shop can accept ₹10 lakh through UPI. The public circular extract confirms eligibility and bank discretion, but does not provide a readable full category table. Do not assume a particular purchase qualifies unless the merchant and your bank confirm it.
Read the ₹10 lakh figure with both of its qualifications in mind: it is stated as a per-day ceiling and applies to select verified merchant categories. It should not be treated as a per-transaction allowance for every customer, nor as a general cap for ordinary retail purchases. The exact usable amount for a particular payment can depend on the current rules for the category, how the merchant is classified by its acquiring bank, and the payer bank’s internal limit. The surfaced official material does not support publishing a complete category-by-category eligibility list, so check the current circular and your bank rather than inferring eligibility from the kind of item you are buying.
NPCI’s 2025 circular context also notes a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for tax-payment category transactions. That is a specific category limit, not a general high-value retail allowance. The applicable ceiling for other eligible categories depends on the current NPCI rules and the bank’s implementation. A tax-payment example demonstrates why transaction category matters; it does not mean that a large purchase from an unrelated merchant can use the same limit.

The PIB’s report that UPI processed more than 20 billion transactions worth over ₹24.85 lakh crore in August 2025 describes the system’s overall scale. It does not establish that an individual large payment will be authorized or accepted by a particular merchant. Aggregate transaction volume can provide context about UPI’s use, but it cannot substitute for a check of your own account, the recipient and the transaction amount.
Compare the payment options
| Option | When it may fit | Limit and important checks |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary bank-account UPI | A merchant accepts UPI and the amount is within your available customer limit. | NPCI’s general FAQ baseline is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Your bank or app may impose a lower limit; transaction type can also matter. |
| Eligible high-value merchant UPI | The recipient is a verified merchant in a category covered by enhanced limits. | The PIB reported up to ₹10 lakh per day for select verified merchant categories from 15 September 2025. Confirm the category, the merchant’s acceptance and your bank’s actual cap; the figure is not a universal retail limit. |
| RuPay credit card linked to UPI | You want to fund an eligible merchant payment with a supported linked card. | Standard UPI limits and merchant-category restrictions apply, along with issuer rules and the available credit limit. Linking a card is not a way to bypass UPI limits. |
| UPI Lite | Small-value payments where this feature is supported. | The PIB’s December 2024 summary states ₹1,000 per payment and a ₹5,000 total limit—far below a large one-shot purchase. |
| UPI 123Pay | Small-value payments using the service’s supported access methods. | The PIB’s December 2024 summary states a ₹10,000 per-transaction limit, so it is not a route for a purchase above that amount. |
For UPI Lite, UPI 123Pay and the RuPay card option, check whether your particular bank and app support the feature and whether the merchant accepts that payment method. A published ceiling alone does not confirm availability for your account or transaction.

It is a comparison of the payment type, merchant eligibility, your payer-side cap, the funding source and the certainty of acceptance and confirmation. No current official customer-specific limits for particular apps were published, so there is no sound basis here to say that one app will reliably approve a larger payment than another. If you already use a UPI app, check its current information and your bank’s rules for the account you plan to use.
Ordinary bank-account UPI
This is the straightforward option when the merchant accepts UPI and the requested amount is within the limit that applies to your account and transaction. Use the ₹1 lakh-per-transaction NPCI FAQ baseline as a starting point, not as proof that your bank will permit the full amount. A lower internal bank limit can make the usable amount less than the general ceiling. Check the relevant bank or app information before you reach the payment stage if an unsuccessful attempt would disrupt the purchase.
Enhanced merchant UPI
This is worth considering only when the merchant and transaction qualify under the enhanced rules. Ask the merchant whether it is accepting the payment as a verified merchant transaction and whether the category is eligible for the amount you need. The merchant’s acquiring-bank classification may matter, while your payer bank can still set a lower limit. Even if the merchant confirms eligibility, verify your own usable limit with your bank. The government’s ₹10 lakh-per-day figure should not be read as a guarantee that an individual payment will go through.

RuPay credit card linked to UPI
A supported linked RuPay credit card can be a funding source for eligible merchant payments, but it is not a universal workaround for a bank-account UPI cap. Standard UPI limits and merchant-category restrictions still apply, and the issuer’s rules and available credit also matter. Check that your app and issuer support the arrangement, that the merchant and purchase are eligible, and that sufficient credit is available. Do not assume that linking a card changes the transaction’s category or raises the applicable UPI ceiling.

UPI Lite and UPI 123Pay
These options are not designed as routes for a large one-shot purchase under the limits cited in the government summary. UPI Lite is listed at ₹1,000 per payment and ₹5,000 total, while UPI 123Pay is listed at ₹10,000 per transaction. Those figures make them useful to distinguish from a high-value merchant route, but they do not solve a payment that exceeds ordinary UPI limits. Check current feature availability with the relevant app or bank if considering them for other payments.
How to check whether your payment is likely to work
- Confirm who you are paying. Establish whether the recipient is a merchant or an individual. A person-to-person transfer does not become an eligible high-value merchant payment simply because it is for a purchase. Make sure the route you intend to use reflects the actual recipient and transaction.
- Ask whether the merchant accepts UPI for this amount. For an enhanced limit, ask the merchant to confirm that it is a verified merchant and that the relevant category and payment route are supported. The merchant’s acquiring-bank classification can matter. A general statement that “UPI is accepted” may not answer whether this particular amount and route are accepted.
- Check the applicable category rule. Do not infer eligibility from the price or type of product alone. Enhanced limits are tied to specified categories and verified merchants, and the readable public extract does not provide a complete category table. Ask the merchant and payer bank to confirm the current category treatment for the transaction rather than assuming the reported ₹10 lakh daily figure applies.
- Check your payer-side limit. Review the bank or app’s current rules, and contact the bank if the amount is close to or above the stated cap. The NPCI ceiling is not necessarily your personal transaction limit. If your bank confirms a lower limit, use that as the operative limit for your decision.
- Check whether the limit is per transaction or per day. The ordinary NPCI FAQ baseline is described per transaction, whereas the government’s ₹10 lakh figure for select verified categories is described per day. Do not compare those figures as if they measure the same thing. Ask which limit applies to the payment you are about to make and whether a stated daily cap is relevant to your situation.
- Check the funding source and available balance or credit. For a bank-account payment, ensure the account can cover the amount. For an eligible linked RuPay credit card, verify issuer support, available credit and merchant-category eligibility. An available balance or credit line does not itself establish that the payment category or amount is permitted.
- Confirm the amount and payee in the payment screen. Before entering your UPI PIN, verify the displayed payee name, amount and recipient type. Confirm that the payment screen corresponds to the merchant you intend to pay. Do not approve an unexpected collect request or share your PIN.
- Plan what happens if UPI is not accepted. Ask the bank and merchant which other supported payment route can handle the amount. Confirm any fees, protections and settlement terms before paying. Do not split a transaction or misclassify a recipient to get around a limit.
- Agree how receipt will be confirmed. For a large purchase, know what confirmation the merchant expects before releasing goods or treating the sale as complete. Keep the transaction reference and merchant receipt. If the payment screen, bank status and merchant’s records do not agree, pause and resolve the discrepancy rather than treating an uncertain status as settled.
What to do if the payment fails or the status is unclear
Do not immediately submit the same large payment again if the first attempt shows a debit, pending status or unclear result. Check the transaction status in the app and with your bank, and ask the merchant to check its records before retrying. Save the transaction reference and any merchant receipt. If your account was debited but the merchant cannot confirm payment, contact your bank or app through its official support route and provide the reference.
Distinguish a payment that was declined from one whose status is still uncertain. If it is unclear whether the first attempt completed, another attempt could create confusion about whether the merchant received payment once or more than once. First check the status and give the merchant the transaction reference so both sides can compare records. Use the bank or app’s official support channel for a debit or unresolved status; do not rely on a message or phone number supplied unexpectedly by someone claiming to help.
NPCI’s FAQ says a UPI payment cannot be stopped after it has been initiated. That makes the pre-payment checks important: confirm the recipient and amount before authorizing, and use the transaction reference to resolve a disputed or delayed confirmation rather than assuming the payment can be cancelled. Keep the reference and receipt until the merchant’s records and your account status agree.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a headline maximum as your own limit. NPCI ceilings are not necessarily what your bank permits for your account. A bank may set a lower internal limit within the overall ceiling.
- Confusing a daily ceiling with a per-transaction limit. The ₹10 lakh amount reported for select categories is per day. The ordinary FAQ baseline is stated per transaction. Confirm which measure applies instead of assuming one replaces the other.
- Assuming every merchant can use enhanced limits. The higher ceilings depend on verified status and specified categories. Ordinary retail acceptance of UPI does not prove eligibility for the enhanced route.
- Sending money to an individual and calling it a merchant purchase. The purpose of the payment does not change a person-to-person transfer into a qualifying merchant payment.
- Using a linked credit card as a limit bypass. RuPay credit-card-on-UPI payments remain subject to standard UPI limits, merchant restrictions, issuer rules and available credit.
- Repeating an uncertain payment too soon. If the first attempt shows a debit or pending status, check with the bank and merchant before retrying.
- Trying to split or relabel a payment to evade a limit. Do not split a payment or misclassify the recipient as a workaround. Ask the bank and merchant about a supported alternative and confirm its terms.
- Authorizing without checking the payee and amount. A UPI payment cannot be stopped after initiation according to NPCI’s FAQ. Verify the displayed details before entering the PIN, and never share the PIN or approve an unexpected collect request.
How to make the decision
- Amount at or below your confirmed ordinary limit: Use ordinary bank-account UPI if the merchant accepts it and the bank or app shows that the payment is within your limit.
- Amount above the ordinary limit: Use an enhanced merchant route only after the merchant confirms its qualifying status and your bank confirms your usable cap. Check whether the stated limit is per transaction or per day.
- Considering a linked RuPay card: Treat it as another eligible funding source for merchant payments, not as a limit workaround. Verify the issuer and merchant restrictions first.
- Considering Lite or 123Pay: Their stated limits make them small-payment options, not solutions for a large purchase.
- No confirmed UPI route: Ask the bank and merchant about another supported method and its terms before committing to the purchase.
For a large payment, a confirmed route matters more than choosing an app by reputation. Verify merchant eligibility, your own bank or issuer limit and the merchant’s ability to confirm receipt before releasing goods or treating the purchase as paid. If the bank or merchant cannot confirm that the required amount is supported, do not rely on an advertised maximum; agree on another supported payment route and clarify its fees, protections and settlement terms before you pay.
In short, match the payment type to the recipient, establish whether enhanced merchant rules apply, then check the payer-side limit and funding source. The available official information supports a general ₹1 lakh-per-transaction baseline and selected higher ceilings, but it does not make every large shop purchase eligible. Your bank and the merchant need to confirm the actual route for the transaction in front of you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the normal UPI limit for a large purchase?
NPCI’s general UPI FAQ gives an ordinary limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Your bank or app may set a lower internal limit, and specified transaction categories can have different ceilings. Check your own bank’s current limit before paying.
Can I pay any merchant up to ₹10 lakh through UPI?
No. The Government of India reported a ceiling of up to ₹10 lakh per day, effective 15 September 2025, for select verified merchant categories. It is not a general retail or per-transaction guarantee. Confirm that the merchant and category qualify and that your payer bank permits the amount.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does an enhanced UPI limit apply to person-to-person transfers?
The NPCI circular says person-to-person transfers remain under existing guidance. A transfer to an individual does not qualify as a high-value merchant payment simply because it is intended to pay for a purchase.
Best Value
Can I use a RuPay credit card linked to UPI to get around a limit?
No. Eligible RuPay credit-card-on-UPI payments remain subject to standard UPI limits and merchant-category restrictions, as well as issuer rules and available credit. Check that your issuer, app and merchant support the payment.
Are UPI Lite or UPI 123Pay suitable for a large one-time purchase?
Not under the limits cited in the PIB’s December 2024 summary: UPI Lite is listed at ₹1,000 per payment and ₹5,000 total, and UPI 123Pay at ₹10,000 per transaction. They are small-value options, not a way to handle a larger one-shot payment.
Should I split a large purchase into several UPI payments if one payment is declined?
Do not split a payment as a way to get around a limit. Ask the bank and merchant which supported payment route can handle the amount, and confirm any fees, protections and settlement terms. If an earlier attempt has an unclear status or shows a debit, check with the bank and merchant before trying again.
Can I cancel a UPI payment after entering my PIN?
NPCI’s FAQ says a UPI payment cannot be stopped after initiation. Verify the payee and amount before authorizing. If a debit and merchant confirmation disagree, save the transaction reference and contact the bank or app through its official support route.
Why might a payment fail even though it is below a published UPI maximum?
A published NPCI ceiling does not guarantee that your bank permits the same amount. The transaction may also depend on merchant status and category, the payment route, app or issuer support, and available account balance or card credit. Confirm those conditions with the bank and merchant.
The Bottom Line
Choose the payment route only after confirming the recipient type, merchant-category eligibility, your bank or issuer’s actual limit and the merchant’s ability to confirm receipt. The ordinary UPI reference point is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction; higher figures apply only in specified circumstances and are not a promise for every large retail purchase. If the route is uncertain, ask the bank and merchant about a supported alternative before paying.
