The best repayment plan for a teacher depends on the loans you actually have, your household and income details, and whether you plan to pursue Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) or Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF). Start by checking each federal loan’s type and first disbursement date in your StudentAid.gov dashboard. Then compare the plans you are eligible for in Federal Student Aid’s Repayment Calculator—not just by monthly payment, but also by total paid, interest, payoff date, and any modeled forgiveness.

There is no reliable “teacher salary” figure that identifies one best plan for everyone. A manageable payment today may cost more over time, and a teaching job by itself does not qualify a borrower for forgiveness. The decision should follow your loan record and service plans.

Start with your loan record, not your job title

“Teacher salary” is not enough information to choose a repayment plan. Federal plan availability can depend on the type of each loan and when it was first disbursed. Income-driven repayment (IDR) calculations also take income and family or dependent information into account. Two teachers earning the same amount may therefore have different eligible plans and estimated payments.

Sign in to StudentAid.gov and make a list of every federal loan. Record its loan type, balance, interest rate, current repayment plan, and first disbursement date. Check whether the loans are Direct, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL), PLUS, or another type; do not assume that loans with similar balances qualify for the same programs. If you have private student loans, list them separately. Federal Student Aid’s federal-plan guidance does not establish which options a private lender offers.

These are screening details, not an individual eligibility ruling. Use the dashboard and calculator to see what is available for your loans, and confirm final terms with your servicer.

Which federal repayment plans may be available in 2026?

Federal Student Aid’s October 2026 guidance says the SAVE Plan ended in March 2026. The same guidance describes broad availability rules for current plans, but a plan’s appearance in a general list does not mean every borrower or loan qualifies.

Plan or plan group Broad eligibility or timing described by Federal Student Aid General calculation or repayment period described by Federal Student Aid
Standard, Graduated, or Extended fixed plans May be available for loans first disbursed before July 1, 2026; loan type also matters. Specific payment amounts and terms depend on the borrower’s eligible loans and are not established by the general guidance.
Tiered Standard Fixed-plan option for loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2026, subject to loan-type rules. Federal Student Aid warns that Tiered Standard payments do not count toward PSLF. Other individual payment terms are not established by the general guidance.
Income-Based Repayment (IBR) Identified for eligible Direct and FFEL loans first disbursed before July 1, 2026; eligibility rules still apply. General formula: 15% of discretionary income, or 10% for new borrowers, with a payment cap tied to the 10-year Standard plan. General repayment period: 25 years, or 20 years for new borrowers.
Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Identified for eligible Direct loans first disbursed before July 1, 2026; eligibility rules still apply. Federal Student Aid says the plan ends no later than July 1, 2028. General formula: 10% of discretionary income, subject to eligibility. General repayment period: 20 years.
Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) Identified for eligible Direct loans first disbursed before July 1, 2026; eligibility rules still apply. Federal Student Aid says the plan ends no later than July 1, 2028. Payment is the lesser of 20% of discretionary income or an income-adjusted 12-year fixed payment. General repayment period: 25 years.
Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) Identified for eligible Direct Loans regardless of disbursement date, subject to loan-type and borrower rules. General formula: 1–10% of adjusted gross income divided by 12, less $50 for each claimed dependent, with a $10 minimum monthly payment. General repayment period: 30 years.

These formulas and periods are Federal Student Aid’s general descriptions in 2026, not a way to calculate your final bill from salary alone. Eligibility, discretionary-income definitions, and the details applied to your loan record matter. Use the Repayment Calculator rather than estimating a payment from the percentages in the table. PAYE and ICR’s stated end date also makes it important to weigh whether a plan scheduled to end fits your longer-term strategy.

Compare the full cost, not only the monthly bill

Enter your income and family or dependent information in Federal Student Aid’s Repayment Calculator, then compare the eligible plans side by side. Review five outputs together: estimated monthly payment, total amount paid, interest, expected payoff date, and any modeled discharge or forgiveness. If PSLF may apply, use the calculator’s PSLF view.

A lower payment can make a tight monthly budget more workable, but stretching repayment can leave more time for interest to accrue and may increase the total paid. Conversely, the plan with the highest monthly payment is not automatically the least costly choice for every borrower if forgiveness is a realistic goal. Compare what you are projected to pay under the plan with the applicable forgiveness rules and your intended service timeline.

  • Monthly affordability: Can you make the estimated payment through a full school year, including months when expenses are less predictable? Leave room for essential costs and emergencies rather than choosing a payment that only works on paper.
  • Total cost: Compare the calculator’s estimated total paid and interest. Do not read a low initial payment as proof of a low lifetime cost.
  • Time to repayment: Note when the estimate shows the loan being paid off or potentially discharged. A longer schedule may reduce current payments but extend the period of debt.
  • Forgiveness assumptions: Check which forgiveness outcome, if any, the calculator models and whether you meet the program’s separate employment, loan, and payment requirements.
  • Flexibility: An income-driven payment is tied to income and household information under its rules. A fixed-plan payment does not adjust automatically when your circumstances change.

The calculator’s results are estimates, not final loan terms. Federal Student Aid says the servicer sets the final terms after processing an application. If your income or family details change, update the information used for planning and ask your servicer how to keep your account current; do not assume a past estimate remains your bill.

Choose the outcome you are optimizing for

Before submitting an application, decide which result matters most. A teacher’s preferred plan can change depending on whether the priority is cash flow now, repaying the debt at the lowest estimated total cost, clearing the balance quickly, or reaching a forgiveness program.

If you need the lowest manageable payment now

Compare the eligible IDR options using your current income and household details. The lowest estimated monthly amount may help with current cash flow, but check its total paid, projected interest, and timeline. A plan that is affordable this year may produce a different estimate after income or family circumstances change, so use current information and understand the plan’s recertification or application requirements through official guidance.

If your priority is lowest estimated lifetime cost

Compare total paid and interest across plans that you can maintain, not just the first monthly amount. If your budget permits larger payments, a fixed option may be worth comparing for a faster payoff, but the calculator and your actual loan terms determine whether it is less costly in your case. Do not select a plan based on an assumed teacher salary, a generic payment formula, or another borrower’s result.

If you want to pay off the balance as quickly as possible

Use the payoff date and estimated total cost to compare eligible plans. Consider whether the projected payment is sustainable alongside your ordinary expenses. A fixed plan’s payment will not automatically fall if your circumstances change, so be cautious about committing to a payment that depends on an optimistic budget.

If forgiveness is your main goal

First determine whether you are aiming for PSLF or TLF. They have different loan, employment, service, and payment rules; the relevant comparison is not simply “which one forgives more.” PSLF may be a longer path tied to qualifying employment and payments, while TLF has a specific five-year consecutive teaching requirement and award limits. The service-time overlap rule can make the order of your decision consequential.

PSLF: check the loan, employer, plan, and payment history

Public Service Loan Forgiveness is not automatic for teachers. Federal Student Aid’s current guidance requires eligible Direct Loans, qualifying full-time employment, and 120 qualifying monthly payments under an eligible repayment plan. Payments do not have to be consecutive, but the other requirements still apply. A school-based job title alone does not establish that your employer or employment arrangement qualifies.

Federal Student Aid’s October 2026 transition guidance lists IBR, ICR, PAYE, and RAP as qualifying IDR plans for PSLF and specifically says Tiered Standard payments do not count. Because plan eligibility can depend on loan type and disbursement date—and some named plans are scheduled to end—verify your own plan before counting on future payments.

  1. Check loan eligibility. Review the loan types in StudentAid.gov and confirm that the loans you want forgiven are eligible Direct Loans. Do not assume FFEL or other loans qualify simply because they are federal.
  2. Check the employer and employment. Use Federal Student Aid’s PSLF Help Tool to assess whether your employer and circumstances meet the program’s requirements.
  3. Compare only qualifying repayment paths. Use the calculator’s PSLF view and confirm that the specific plan you are considering counts. A plan with a lower standard payment is not useful for PSLF if its payments do not qualify.
  4. Submit and update employment documentation. Use the official PSLF process to document qualifying employment, and check your progress periodically rather than waiting until the end of the payment period.

For a teacher expecting to remain in qualifying public service, compare the estimated amount paid before PSLF with the amount and time involved in a non-forgiveness payoff path. Do not treat a modeled discharge as guaranteed: it depends on meeting the program’s conditions over time.

TLF: evaluate the award and five-year service commitment separately

Teacher Loan Forgiveness has a distinct service test. Federal Student Aid’s current teacher-program guidance describes eligibility after five complete and consecutive academic years of full-time teaching at a qualifying low-income school or educational service agency, along with other requirements. The guidance describes awards of up to $5,000 for eligible teachers and up to $17,500 for qualifying highly qualified special education, secondary mathematics, or science teachers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only specified Direct and Federal Stafford loans qualify for TLF. PLUS and Perkins loans do not qualify for this program. Check your loan types and the current official program requirements before planning around an award; the maximum amount is not a promise that every teacher or loan will receive that amount.

The key planning issue is that the same five-year teaching-service period cannot be used for both TLF and PSLF. If you have a substantial balance and expect to remain in qualifying public service, compare the potential TLF award with the value of continuing toward PSLF using that service period. The better path depends on your eligible balance, program qualifications, payment history, and future employment plans; it is not always advantageous to use TLF first.

Decision point Teacher Loan Forgiveness Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Service or payment milestone Five complete and consecutive academic years of qualifying full-time teaching, plus other requirements. 120 qualifying monthly payments; they need not be consecutive, while qualifying employment and other requirements still apply.
Potential forgiveness amount Up to $5,000 or $17,500, depending on qualifications, under current Federal Student Aid teacher guidance. Amount depends on the eligible balance and qualifying progress; no fixed award amount is established by the cited guidance.
Loan scope described Specified Direct and Federal Stafford loans; PLUS and Perkins loans are excluded. Eligible Direct Loans.
Overlap consideration The same five-year service period cannot also count toward PSLF. Compare whether preserving the same teaching years for PSLF is more valuable than applying for TLF.

Before pursuing either option, verify requirements with Federal Student Aid and use the appropriate official application or tool. Keep the distinction between a program maximum and an amount you personally qualify for clear in your decision.

If you are moving from SAVE, follow your own servicer notice

Federal Student Aid says SAVE ended in March 2026. Borrowers affected by the transition are receiving individualized servicer notices in groups, so there is no single universal deadline to use. According to the October 2026 guidance, a borrower has 90 days after the servicer notice to choose another eligible plan, followed by a final 30-day notice if the borrower does not act. The potential automatic placement depends on loan timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the notice from your servicer and record the deadline stated for your account.
  2. Check your StudentAid.gov loan record and use the Repayment Calculator to compare plans available to your loans.
  3. Apply for an eligible plan through the official process before your individual deadline if you choose to switch.
  4. If you do not understand the notice or your eligibility, contact your servicer and ask how the transition applies to your account. Keep the notice and application records.

Do not rely on another borrower’s deadline or assume that inaction will preserve your current payment. Federal Student Aid warns that inaction after the final notice can lead to automatic placement into a fixed plan; the applicable outcome depends on loan timing.

A practical decision sequence for teachers

  1. Inventory federal loans. Record each type, balance, rate, current plan, and first disbursement date in StudentAid.gov. Separate private loans from the federal comparison.
  2. Enter current household information. Use income and family or dependent details in the Repayment Calculator. These inputs can affect IDR estimates; salary alone is not enough.
  3. Compare the available plans. For each eligible option, record monthly payment, total paid, interest, payoff date, possible discharge, and whether the plan fits your intended timeline.
  4. Name your priority. Choose whether current affordability, lowest estimated total cost, fastest payoff, or forgiveness is the main objective. If you have competing priorities, decide which trade-off you can live with.
  5. Test PSLF eligibility before relying on it. Check Direct Loan status, employer eligibility, qualifying employment, and whether the chosen plan counts. Use the PSLF Help Tool and maintain employment documentation.
  6. Evaluate TLF without double-counting service. Verify school and loan eligibility, full-time consecutive service, and the applicable award tier. Compare the TLF route with preserving those years toward PSLF.
  7. Apply and confirm final terms. Submit through Federal Student Aid’s official process, then review the servicer’s processed terms. The calculator estimate is not the final payment.

Applying for a federal repayment plan does not require a paid intermediary. Federal Student Aid states: “Help from your federal loan servicer is free. You never have to pay a company to apply for a repayment plan or manage your federal student loans.” Use official federal tools and your servicer for plan applications and account-specific answers.
