Open an account under that broker’s onboarding requirements, give it a clear instruction for the security and quantity, and check the order and transaction records through the broker’s process. Eligible equities cleared and settled by CSCS use T+1 settlement: one business day after the trade date, with settlement at 5:00 p.m. T+1 under the SEC’s August 2026 clarification. Settlement does not, by itself, guarantee that a particular bank account will show the proceeds at that exact time.
What buying shares through a stockbroker means
A share represents an ownership interest in a company. Buying NGX-listed shares means instructing a stockbroker to submit an order on your behalf in the exchange’s market. The broker is the intermediary; it does not make a gain or dividend on your behalf inevitable. A share price can rise or fall, and some companies do not pay dividends. Rights also vary by share class. The NGX explains these features on its equities page.

This guide covers ordinary secondary-market purchases and sales: trading shares that are already listed, rather than applying for a new issue. It explains how to select and verify an intermediary, open an account, place and monitor instructions, understand the displayed charges, and follow a sale through settlement. It is procedural information, not a recommendation to buy a particular share or use a particular broker.
The practical starting point is not an app or a particular order type. It is confirming that the intermediary is authorized for the market you intend to use. Then obtain its own current onboarding instructions, order process, and fee breakdown. The NGX says that a broker facilitates account opening and trading, but the broker supplies the specific KYC process and documents required for its customers.

How to choose and verify a stockbroker
For ordinary trading on the NGX, choose a firm that is an NGX Trading License Holder. Check that firm’s current status in both the SEC’s registered capital-market operator information and the NGX Trading License Holder directory. Use the SEC investor FAQs and the NGX Find a Broker directory as starting points.
Do not rely only on an old directory listing, an advertisement, or a name that resembles a regulated firm. The NGX notes that status lists can change, so check immediately before opening an account. Confirm the firm’s identity in the relevant official listings and make sure the contact details and entity you are dealing with match the firm you verified.
Compare the service, not just the name
Once you have identified eligible firms, compare the details that affect how you will actually trade and maintain records. A broker’s onboarding requirements are broker-specific; ask for the current checklist and how to complete it rather than assuming a universal set of documents. Ask whether it supports your circumstances, including whether it handles domestic or international investors. The NGX says both domestic and foreign investors may use the market, but the dealer sets the requirements for its account process.

- Order access: Ask how you can submit instructions and what details the broker needs for a buy or a sale.
- Status and records: Find out how to check whether an instruction is pending, partly executed, completed, or cancelled, and how to see your holdings in broker and CSCS records.
- Full charges: Request an itemized, current estimate of charges for both sides of a trade, including the broker’s commission and market-related fees.
- Funding and proceeds: Ask how the broker accepts funds, how sale proceeds are handled, and what process applies to withdrawals or bank-account credits.
- Support: Check how to contact the broker to resolve an unclear instruction, execution status, or account record.
These comparisons concern the service each broker actually offers. The exchange’s general process does not establish which firm has the best interface, customer support, execution information, or charges.

Opening and funding an account
After choosing a verified broker, follow its onboarding steps. The NGX investor guidance does not give one universal KYC document checklist: documentation is provided as required by the dealer. Requirements can therefore differ by broker and by the investor’s circumstances. Ask the broker for its current instructions and make sure you understand how to submit the requested information before sending funds or trading instructions.
- Contact the broker through its verified channels. Confirm that the firm you are communicating with is the same entity you checked in the SEC and NGX listings.
- Complete the broker’s account and KYC process. Use the broker’s current forms and document requirements rather than relying on an unofficial checklist.
- Ask how securities and cash are handled. Investors may hold securities through the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS). Ask how your broker links or records your holdings and where you will be able to review them.
- Follow the broker’s funding instructions. Confirm the approved method and account details directly with the broker. Do not assume funds are available for an order until the broker’s process confirms that they are.
- Keep account and transaction records. Retain the broker’s confirmations and learn where it displays account activity, order status, holdings, and statements.
Account approval, funds availability, and the ability to submit an order are separate practical steps. The NGX’s general investor information does not promise a universal onboarding time or specify one funding method for all brokers. Ask the chosen broker what it has completed and what remains before treating the account as ready to trade. The NGX’s Becoming an Investor guidance describes the general role of the dealer and investor process.
How to place a buy order
Before instructing the broker, identify the listed company or security and the number of shares you intend to buy. Check the quoted price and ask what order conditions the broker offers. The exact retail interface, labels, and order types depend on the broker; the NGX describes an automated central order book rather than a single universal customer interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Identify the security precisely. Confirm the company or security name with the broker and ensure the instruction refers to the intended NGX-listed instrument.
- Set the quantity. State how many shares you want to buy. Avoid sending an incomplete instruction that leaves the broker to infer the quantity.
- Clarify the price and conditions. Ask what price information is being used and what order conditions are available through that broker. Do not assume an instruction will execute at a particular price.
- Confirm funds and charges. Check the amount the broker requires to be available and whether its estimate includes relevant fees. The amount needed may not be limited to the share price alone.
- Submit through the broker’s stated channel. Follow its process, then check the instruction details it records before relying on the order.
- Monitor the status. Ask how to see if the order is still pending, partly filled, fully executed, or cancelled. If only part of the quantity executes, confirm what happens to the remainder with the broker.
The NGX order book uses price, cross, and time priority. This market structure helps explain why an instruction is not the same thing as a completed trade: the order must be handled through the market and execution is not guaranteed at the price or time a customer expects. The exchange’s trading market structure page describes the order-book market and its operating details.

Pay attention to whether the price shown to you is live. The NGX trading-market-structure page labels its displayed market data as 30 minutes delayed. A delayed display is not a live price feed, so do not treat it as a real-time execution quote. Confirm the price information and order terms available from your broker before sending an instruction.
How to check a buy order and your holdings
After placing an order, use the status information and records offered by your broker rather than assuming that submission means execution. Ask how the broker distinguishes an unfilled or pending order from one that is partly filled, complete, or cancelled. If the status is unclear, contact the broker before placing a duplicate instruction; otherwise you could create an additional order when you meant only to check the first one.
When a trade is completed, check the broker’s confirmation and the account or CSCS records through the process it provides. Confirm the security and quantity recorded, and ask how any unfilled balance is treated. The NGX notes that securities can be held with CSCS, but does not prescribe a single app, notification method, or customer record screen for all brokers.

How to sell shares on the Nigerian Exchange
To sell, instruct your broker to sell the relevant security and quantity. Confirm that the instruction identifies the shares you intend to sell, then check its status and execution through the broker’s process. As with a buy order, sending an instruction does not itself establish that the full amount has traded or that it traded at a particular price.

SEC describes Direct Cash Settlement as the direct credit of net sale proceeds to an investor’s bank account through CSCS. That description explains the settlement route; it does not establish the time at which every individual bank account will display funds. Confirm the arrangement and any account-specific steps with your broker. See the SEC’s Direct Cash Settlement explanation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How T+1 settlement affects a trade
For eligible equities cleared and settled by CSCS, the current SEC framework is T+1: settlement takes place one business day after the trade date. The SEC’s transition notice states that T+1 became effective on June 1, 2026. In its August 12, 2026 clarification, the SEC specified settlement at 5:00 p.m. T+1, or trade date plus one. Read the SEC transition notice alongside the later T+1 implementation clarification.
“T” is the trade date; “T+1” is the next business day, not simply the next calendar date. The settlement framework applies to eligible transactions cleared and settled by CSCS, so do not extend it to a transaction without confirming that it is covered. Older NGX material referring to T+3 and transition material referring to T+2 are historical references, not the current cycle for eligible CSCS-settled equities.

Settlement and a bank balance update are related but distinct events. The SEC’s 5:00 p.m. timing describes settlement under the framework; it does not guarantee that a particular bank account will reflect proceeds at 5:00 p.m. Ask the broker how it handles the proceeds for your account and what to check if the expected credit has not appeared.

What charges to expect
A trade can include brokerage commission and market-related charges. The NGX trading-market-structure page displays the following example equity fee schedule. The percentages below are the exchange’s displayed figures, not a guaranteed all-in invoice for every broker or transaction. The schedule was accessed October 13, 2026; rates and applicability can change, and readers should request the broker’s current itemized breakdown.
| Displayed charge | NGX schedule entry | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| NGX fee | 0.3% on the sell side | Displayed as a sell-side market charge. |
| CSCS fee | 0.3% on the sell side | Displayed as a sell-side clearing and settlement charge. |
| Trade alert fee | ₦4 on each side | The displayed amount applies on both the buy and sell sides. |
| SEC fee | 0.3% on the buy side | Displayed as a buy-side charge. |
| Stamp duty | 0.08% on each side | The NGX schedule displays it for both sides; confirm its current applicability to your transaction. |
| Brokerage commission | 0.75–1.35% on each side | The range is the NGX’s displayed schedule, not a promise of a particular broker’s rate or your complete transaction cost. |
| VAT | Shown against relevant fees | Ask the broker which fees it applies to and how VAT appears in the current quote. |
The category and side of a displayed fee matter: a charge listed on the buy side should not be casually described as applying to a sale, or vice versa. At the same time, the table is not enough to calculate every investor’s actual total because the NGX cautions that its schedule is illustrative and rates or application may change. Request an all-in estimate for the specific trade, including the broker’s commission, relevant market charges, taxes, and any handling of the proceeds or funding that the broker says applies.
Use the NGX’s displayed schedule as a list of charge categories to ask about, not as a substitute for a current broker quote. Ask for the breakdown on a purchase and a sale separately; the displayed categories are not identical on each side.

The NGX trading-market-structure page lists market hours from 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., with continuous trading beginning at 9:30 a.m. Those are the displayed market hours, not a guarantee that an order submitted at any point will be executed. The broker’s own order handling and the order book determine what happens to the specific instruction. Check the broker’s process if you submit outside the continuous trading period or need to know how an instruction will be handled.
Also distinguish market timing from settlement timing. Trading hours describe when the exchange’s market operates; T+1 describes the settlement cycle for eligible cleared and settled transactions. Neither determines by itself when a broker’s interface changes a particular status or when a bank displays funds.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using an unverified intermediary: Check the current SEC registration information and NGX Trading License Holder directory before opening an account.
- Assuming every broker has the same onboarding list: Ask the selected dealer for its own current KYC requirements.
- Sending an ambiguous instruction: Specify the security, quantity, and intended action, and confirm the broker recorded the instruction correctly.
- Treating an order as an execution: Check status for pending, partial, completed, or cancelled orders.
- Assuming displayed prices are live: NGX market data on the cited market-structure page is labeled 30 minutes delayed.
- Budgeting only for the share price: Request a current all-in fee quote for the relevant side of the transaction.
- Expecting a guaranteed price, profit, or dividend: Execution price and investment returns are not guaranteed; prices can fall and some companies pay no dividends.
- Equating settlement time with bank-credit time: Ask the broker about the route and timing for your account’s proceeds rather than assuming the bank balance updates exactly at settlement.
