Choose a robot vacuum by measuring your home’s surfaces and obstacles first, then matching the exact model’s capabilities to them. Hard floors are usually straightforward; rug edges, fringe, thresholds and room layout need closer checks. For most homes, a robot is best treated as a way to manage routine dust and crumbs—not as a replacement for deep cleaning or scrubbing dried messes.
Start with your floors, rugs and thresholds
Walk through the rooms the robot would clean and note the surface in each one: tile, marble or other hard flooring, plus any rugs or mats. Pay particular attention to transitions. A rug edge that curls, loose fringe or a raised room sill can matter more than the broad floor area.

- List the rooms and their floor surfaces.
- Measure the highest threshold and the thickest rug or mat edge the robot must cross.
- Photograph tricky transitions and note loose fringe or edges that could snag.
- Check the exact model’s stated clearance or climbing limit against those measurements.
Haier India identifies mixed flooring and raised thresholds as considerations in Indian homes and recommends checking climbing ability. That is practical guidance, not a universal threshold measurement or guarantee that a robot will cross every transition. See Haier India’s buyer guide.

For example, Eureka Forbes’ listing for its Smartclean with Home Mapping Pro advertises carpet and floor-mat climbing up to 15 mm. That is a manufacturer-stated limit for that model, not independent evidence that it will handle every rug edge or floor transition.

Decide whether you need vacuuming, mopping or both
Routine vacuuming
A robot vacuum can help with recurring dust and crumbs on hard floors. Whether it suits your household depends on the floor plan, rugs, obstacles and the maintenance you are willing to do—not a headline suction figure alone.
Light damp wiping
Many combo robots use a damp cloth or mop pad for light, fresh dirt. NDTV Shopping cautions that this kind of mopping is not suited to dried curry droplets or muddy footprints. Treat it as maintenance rather than deep cleaning, and keep manual cleaning for stubborn messes. Its robot vacuum and mop guide describes the limitations.
Using a combo around rugs
Before running a mop on a mixed floor, confirm how the particular model handles rugs: whether it can avoid them, whether you can set no-mop zones, or whether you must remove rugs or change the cleaning mode. Do not assume that every vacuum-mop separates vacuuming and mopping in the same way.

Match navigation to your floor plan
Compare the navigation controls with the home’s layout. Systematic mapping, room selection and no-go zones can help when you want to target rooms or keep the robot away from particular areas. A simpler approach may be adequate in a small, open space with few obstacles.

- Check whether the model supports room mapping and room-specific cleaning.
- Look for no-go zones or other controls that fit your rugs and mop-use plan.
- If you have more than one floor, verify whether the exact model supports storing maps for each floor.
- Clear movable objects before cleaning. NDTV Shopping notes that moving objects after mapping can disrupt the map.
Features and controls vary by exact model, so confirm them in the model’s instructions rather than assuming they carry across a product family.
Compare models on the same household criteria
Once you have a shortlist, use your measurements and routine to compare each exact model. Published specifications are useful for screening, but they do not establish how a machine will perform in every home.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Surface fit | Hard floors, rug pile, loose edges and fringe; how vacuuming and mopping can be configured separately. |
| Obstacle fit | Your measured threshold and rug transitions versus the model’s stated clearance or climbing limit. |
| Coverage | Mapping, room controls and no-go zones for your layout; support for multiple floor maps if needed. |
| Routine care | Dustbin emptying, filter cleaning or replacement, hair removal from brushes, mop type and pad care. |
| Ownership | Availability and cost of compatible filters, brushes, mop pads, bags and batteries, plus local service and warranty terms. |
| Total value | Current local price and dock features against the tasks you want to avoid doing manually. |
Do not treat suction numbers as a reliable cross-brand ranking: the available India-wide sources do not establish a comparable performance or dust-load dataset. A manufacturer’s figure describes its own product claim, not a household guarantee.

Check maintenance and local parts before buying
Ownership involves more than the initial setup. Haier’s guidance says to empty the dustbin, clean or replace filters, remove hair from brushes and wipe sensors. Check whether those tasks suit your routine, then verify that compatible parts can actually be obtained for the exact model.
- Confirm the filter and brush cleaning schedule in the model’s instructions.
- Check access to compatible filters, brushes, mop pads, bags and batteries, and their replacement costs.
- Find out how the mop pad is washed and dried, and what dock functions are included.
- Verify local warranty and service terms at checkout; stock and offers can change.
TOQ’s buying guide also highlights replacement-part cost and availability as ownership considerations. Exact compatibility matters: do not assume a generic-looking part fits your model.
A practical buying sequence
- Map the home’s surfaces and measure the tallest threshold and thickest rug edge.
- Choose the main job: routine vacuuming, light damp wiping or both. If dried stains and deep scrubbing are your priority, a basic mop pad is not a substitute.
- Read the exact model’s instructions for rugs, wet mopping, obstacle clearance, map storage and whether it resumes after charging.
- Inspect the dustbin and filter routine, brush access, mop washing and local availability of compatible parts.
- Compare the current India price with the features you will use, then check the warranty and service terms for that model.
When a robot vacuum is a sensible fit
A robot is a better fit when its stated limits match your measured transitions, its navigation suits the layout, and routine upkeep is acceptable. If a home has rugs or thresholds the model cannot reliably handle, or the main need is deep scrubbing, those limitations should shape the decision before price or headline specifications do.
