How to Choose a Mutual Fund for a 10- to 15-Year SIP

A long SIP horizon does not determine the right fund. Start with your goal and risk capacity, then compare similar schemes on portfolio, costs, plan type, and risk.

Choose a mutual fund for a 10- to 15-year SIP by starting with your goal, the date you need the money, your liquidity needs, and the loss you can tolerate—not by picking a fund with the highest recent returns or the lowest NAV. Use that profile to identify a suitable scheme category, then compare funds with similar objectives on risk, portfolio quality, current costs, and performance against relevant peers and benchmarks. A long horizon and regular instalments do not guarantee a profit or protect your principal.

Start with the goal, not the fund

A 10- to 15-year horizon is useful context, but it does not determine the right fund category or the amount of equity exposure for every investor. Two people investing for the same length of time may have different goals, financial cushions, liquidity needs, and ability to withstand losses. The time period is one part of the decision, not a shortcut to a scheme recommendation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Before comparing schemes, write down:

  • What the money is for: A specific goal helps you judge how much uncertainty you can accept.
  • When you expect to need it: Consider whether the date is fixed or can move if markets are down.
  • Whether you may need access earlier: A long-term plan does not remove the possibility of an unexpected cash need.
  • How you would respond to a fall: Consider whether you could continue investing and remain invested through losses, rather than assuming you will be comfortable with volatility.

These questions distinguish the planned investment horizon from your capacity to take risk. A goal may be years away, but a fixed deadline or limited ability to tolerate losses can still matter. Conversely, being comfortable with fluctuations does not by itself make a concentrated or high-risk scheme appropriate. The information here does not establish a personalized equity/debt allocation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think through the date as a practical constraint. If the goal date can move, you may have more flexibility to wait through a period of poor performance. If you need the money on a particular date, consider how much uncertainty around the value would be acceptable then. This is not a forecast of market conditions; it is a way to make your own constraints explicit before you select an investment.

Also separate liquidity needs from the long-term goal. If you might need some of the invested money earlier, that possibility belongs in the decision. Do not assume that choosing a long SIP term means every instalment can safely be left untouched until the end. Read the scheme documents for relevant terms and risks before investing.

Choose a category that fits your objective and risk tolerance

Mutual-fund categories invest differently and carry different risks. SEBI’s investor education page describes their broad aims and exposures; these are category descriptions, not recommendations for an individual investor.

Category Broad objective or exposure What to understand before choosing
Equity-oriented funds Seek medium- to long-term capital appreciation and carry comparatively high risks. Equity prices fluctuate. Consider whether you can tolerate losses and whether the portfolio is diversified and appropriate to the scheme’s stated objective.
Debt funds Generally invest in fixed-income securities. They are affected by interest-rate changes and carry credit risk. Review the quality of the debt instruments and the scheme’s interest-rate sensitivity.
Balanced funds Combine equity and debt. Check the actual investment approach and risks; the label alone does not tell you how the scheme will behave.
Index funds Track a named market index. Returns can differ from the index because of tracking error. Check which index is tracked and how closely the scheme follows it.
Sector funds Concentrate exposure in a chosen sector. Performance is more exposed to the fortunes of that sector than a broadly diversified approach.

Descriptions above are based on SEBI’s investor education on mutual funds. A 10- to 15-year SIP does not automatically make any one of these categories suitable. Match the objective and exposure to your goal, risk capacity, and need for liquidity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The categories are not interchangeable. Equity-oriented schemes seek appreciation but come with comparatively high risk; debt schemes invest in fixed-income securities but are not free of risk, since interest-rate changes and credit quality matter. Balanced schemes bring equity and debt together, while index schemes follow a named index and can differ from it because of tracking error. A sector scheme is more exposed to one chosen sector. Comparing these options solely by a return number would miss the differences in what they hold and the risks they take.

Use the category description as a first filter, then check what the specific scheme says it will do. For example, a broad category label does not tell you the actual holdings, portfolio concentration, debt quality, or how closely an index scheme tracks its named index. Those details belong in the scheme information and offer documents. If you cannot explain the scheme’s objective and main risks in plain language after reading them, pause rather than relying on the label.

There is no category that follows automatically from the words “10- to 15-year SIP.” The information provided here does not support naming a winning fund, prescribing an allocation, or claiming that one category will produce a certain outcome over that period. Your first decision is what kind of exposure you are considering and whether its risks fit your circumstances.

Compare schemes with similar objectives

Once you have a category or objective in mind, compare like with like. Comparing a sector fund with a broad index fund, for example, can obscure the fact that they have different exposures and aims. Read the scheme information and offer documents, and use the same decision criteria for each candidate.

  1. Read the scheme objective and risk disclosures. Confirm what the scheme intends to invest in and the risks it describes. Do not rely on a category name or a short summary alone.
  2. Inspect the portfolio. For equity schemes, consider the quality and diversification of holdings. For debt schemes, examine the quality of debt instruments and the risks associated with interest-rate changes.
  3. Check current costs and loads. Look up the scheme’s current Total Expense Ratio (TER) and applicable load information rather than relying on an old article or a generic cost range.
  4. Review performance in context. Compare suitable periods with schemes that have similar objectives and with a relevant benchmark. Past returns are context, not a forecast: SEBI cautions that past performance may not continue and is not an indicator of future performance.
  5. Consider how the plan is delivered. Decide whether you are prepared to research, select, and manage the investment independently or want distributor support through a Regular Plan.

SEBI’s guidance on scheme comparison, offer documents, performance, and NAV emphasizes comparing schemes with similar objectives and considering portfolio quality. A strong past result alone does not establish that a scheme is right for your goal.

For a useful comparison, make a short list of schemes with a similar stated objective, then apply the same questions to each. What is the scheme meant to invest in? What risks does its documentation identify? What does the portfolio contain? What are the current expenses and applicable loads? How has performance looked relative to comparable schemes and an appropriate benchmark? This process helps prevent a comparison from becoming a contest between unrelated funds with different objectives.

Portfolio quality should be assessed in the context of the scheme’s objective. For an equity scheme, look at the quality and diversification of its holdings rather than assuming that a past return proves the portfolio is suitable. For a debt scheme, examine the quality of the debt instruments and interest-rate sensitivity; the fact that a security is fixed-income does not remove credit or interest-rate risk. For an index fund, the named index and tracking error are central to understanding what the scheme is designed to follow. A sector fund’s narrower exposure makes its sector concentration especially relevant.

Performance is informative only when the comparison is fair and the limitations are clear. Compare suitable periods, like-for-like schemes, and a relevant benchmark; do not select only the period or peer group that makes one candidate look best. Historical figures describe past experience, not what will happen over the next decade. SEBI explicitly cautions that past performance is not an indicator of future performance and may not be sustained. The information provided here does not identify a universal lookback period or a return threshold that makes a fund suitable, so avoid treating any such number as a rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, distinguish a scheme decision from a return prediction. No official statistic cited here provides a specific SIP return, corpus estimate, or success rate for this horizon. If you use a calculator, any assumed return is an illustration rather than a forecast. Do not let a projected number override the scheme’s stated risks or your ability to tolerate losses.

Decide between Direct and Regular plans

Direct and Regular are plans within the same mutual-fund scheme: they share the portfolio and fund manager, but have different expense ratios. A Direct plan excludes distributor commissions and has a separate NAV. A Regular plan includes distribution costs and can provide access to distributor assistance.

Plan What is different May fit an investor who…
Direct Has lower expenses because distributor commissions are excluded; the investor selects and executes the investment independently. Can research, choose, and maintain the investment decision independently, or has separate professional advice.
Regular Includes distribution costs and can involve distributor assistance. Values guidance or assistance and has checked what service is offered and how the intermediary is paid.

AMFI explains the plan structure and the role of distributor assistance on its Direct Plan information page. Direct is not universally best: the cost difference should be weighed against the support you need. AMFI also notes registered investment advice for a fee as a separate option; verify an adviser’s registration, services, and fee arrangement before engaging one.

The key distinction is not that the two plans own different portfolios. They are plans in the same scheme, managed by the same fund manager, but the expenses differ and the Direct plan has a separate NAV. Direct removes distributor commission and expects you to do the research, make the selection, and execute it. That can suit an investor who is able to handle those tasks or who has separate professional advice. It is not a label that makes the underlying scheme safer or more appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Regular plan may be considered when distributor support is valuable. Before choosing it, find out what help is actually offered and how the intermediary is paid. Compare that support with its cost rather than assuming either that assistance is unnecessary or that every service is worth its price. The comparison is personal: a lower expense ratio matters, but so does whether you can make and maintain the investment decision responsibly.

AMFI also mentions registered investment advice for a fee as a separate route. If considering an adviser, check registration, services, and the fee arrangement. The information available here does not establish a specific adviser, partner, affiliate, or product recommendation, so this article does not endorse one.

Check the current expense ratio and other costs

TER is a scheme’s operating costs expressed as a percentage of average net asset value (NAV). Expenses are deducted before the daily NAV is disclosed, so costs affect the value investors see rather than appearing only as a separate bill.

TER can change. Check the current scheme-level disclosure on the fund house or AMFI website when comparing funds and before investing. AMFI says current scheme TERs are disclosed daily and explains the calculation and its effect on NAV in its Expense Ratio guidance. Also check applicable loads and read the scheme documents; do not assume that an expense ratio quoted in an older source is still current.

When comparing costs, use the current figure for each scheme, not a generic claim about what funds in a category usually charge. The expense ratio is stated as a percentage of average NAV, and costs are deducted before the NAV is disclosed. That is why the amount investors see in the NAV already reflects scheme expenses. TER is one selection parameter, not a complete measure of suitability: a low cost cannot compensate for an objective, risk profile, or portfolio that does not fit your needs.

Look at the scheme’s own disclosures because current TERs can change. AMFI says they are disclosed daily on fund and AMFI websites. The date matters: an older comparison may no longer show the scheme’s current expense ratio. Check any applicable load information as well, and read the scheme documents rather than assuming every cost is captured by a single number.

Ignore low NAVs and new-fund issue prices as bargain signals

A lower unit NAV does not make a fund cheaper or better. For the same amount invested, a lower NAV buys more units, but that unit count alone says nothing about the value or quality of the investment. If two similar schemes’ NAVs rise by the same percentage, the investment value changes by the same percentage regardless of their starting NAVs.

For the same reason, a new scheme’s ₹10 issue price is not evidence that it has more potential or is better value than an established scheme. Compare the objective, portfolio, risks, costs, and relevant performance context instead. SEBI explains this low- and high-NAV point in its mutual-fund investor education.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The unit count is not a measure of how much value an investment has created. Buying more units at a lower NAV does not mean you have bought a better portfolio, and a higher NAV does not by itself mean a scheme is expensive. The comparison that matters is how the investment value changes in percentage terms, alongside the scheme’s objective, risks, portfolio, and costs.

Do not use a new scheme’s ₹10 issue price as a shortcut around the same analysis. An issue price does not establish that a new scheme is cheaper, more promising, or better suited to a long SIP. A low or high NAV is not a selection signal; scheme information and like-for-like comparison are more relevant.

Understand what a SIP does—and does not—do

A SIP is a way to invest at regular intervals; it is not a return guarantee or a substitute for choosing an appropriate scheme. Market movements can affect each instalment differently, and the overall investment can lose value. AMFI states: “Mutual Fund Schemes are not guaranteed or assured return products.” Its risk guidance also notes that investors can lose principal, equity prices fluctuate, and debt securities carry credit and interest-rate risk.

Neither the 10- to 15-year period nor the SIP cadence guarantees a positive outcome. Do not treat a projected corpus, return calculator, or past return as a promised result; any calculator output depends on assumptions, not certainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regular instalments describe how you invest, not how the fund performs. The market can move between instalments, and the value of the investment can still fall. A long horizon does not cancel the risks of the underlying holdings: equity prices fluctuate, while debt securities have credit and interest-rate risks. Mutual-fund schemes are not guaranteed-return products, and principal can be lost.

  • Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.

This is why a SIP should not be treated as a way to avoid choosing carefully. First understand the scheme’s objective and risks, then decide whether its exposure fits your circumstances. Do not infer that regular investing guarantees a positive result simply because the contributions are spread over time. Likewise, a return calculator cannot resolve the uncertainty: it can only show an illustration based on assumptions you enter.

A practical selection checklist

  • Define the goal, target date, liquidity needs, and capacity to tolerate losses.
  • Choose a scheme objective to investigate; do not infer the right category solely from the time horizon.
  • Compare funds with similar objectives, using their scheme documents and risk disclosures.
  • Review portfolio quality, diversification, and—where relevant—debt credit quality and interest-rate sensitivity.
  • Check current TER, loads, and whether Direct or Regular better matches your need for support.
  • Assess performance against suitable peers and a relevant benchmark, without treating past returns as a forecast.
  • Ignore low NAV and ₹10 new-scheme issue prices as measures of value.
  • Recheck current scheme information, holdings, risk indicators, and TER before investing.

A practical sequence is to define your constraints, identify the kind of exposure you are considering, and then compare candidates that share a similar objective. Read the documents and risk disclosures before looking for a performance leader. Next, examine holdings and relevant portfolio risks, check current costs and loads, and decide whether you want the independent approach of a Direct plan or the support associated with a Regular plan. Finish by reviewing performance against suitable peers and a relevant benchmark, keeping the past-performance caveat in mind.

Before acting, revisit the details that can change: scheme-level TER, holdings, risk indicators, and performance disclosures. Use current fund-house or AMFI information rather than relying on old comparisons. If an important point in the scheme documents is unclear, do not treat the SIP horizon as a reason to ignore it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 10- to 15-year SIP mean I should choose an equity fund?

No category follows automatically from the time horizon. SEBI describes equity-oriented funds as seeking medium- to long-term capital appreciation and carrying comparatively high risks, but your goal, liquidity needs, and capacity to tolerate losses also matter. The information provided here does not support a personalized equity/debt allocation or a specific fund recommendation.

Are mutual funds or SIPs guaranteed to make money over 10 to 15 years?

No. AMFI states that mutual-fund schemes are not guaranteed or assured return products. Investors can lose principal; equity prices fluctuate, and debt securities carry credit and interest-rate risk. Neither a long horizon nor regular SIP instalments guarantees a positive outcome.

Is a Direct plan always better than a Regular plan?

No. Direct and Regular plans use the same scheme portfolio and fund manager, but Direct excludes distributor commissions and has lower expenses, while Regular can provide distributor assistance. Weigh the cost against the support you need and check what service an intermediary provides and how it is paid.

Should I choose the fund with the lowest NAV or a new scheme priced at ₹10?

No. A lower NAV buys more units for the same investment but does not establish better value or performance. A ₹10 issue price is not evidence that a new scheme is a bargain. Compare objective, portfolio, risks, costs, and relevant performance context instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I compare the past performance of two funds?

Compare schemes with similar objectives over suitable periods and against a relevant benchmark. Consider portfolio quality and risks as well. SEBI cautions that past performance is not an indicator of future performance and may not be sustained, so do not treat historical returns as a forecast.

Where can I check a scheme’s current expense ratio?

AMFI says current scheme TERs are disclosed daily on fund-house and AMFI websites. Check the scheme-level disclosure when comparing funds and before investing, because TER can change. Also review applicable loads and the scheme documents.

The Bottom Line

For a 10- to 15-year SIP, start with the goal, date, liquidity needs, and loss tolerance; then compare schemes with similar objectives on risks, portfolio quality, current costs, plan type, and relevant performance context. Do not let a long horizon, past returns, a low NAV, or a ₹10 issue price stand in for that work. A SIP is not a guarantee, so verify current scheme disclosures before investing.
