You can buy Medigap after leaving Medicare Advantage only if a policy is available to you and you meet the applicable enrollment rules. Leaving an Advantage plan does not, by itself, guarantee the right to buy any Medigap policy. First confirm your right to return to Original Medicare, then check whether federal or state protections let you buy a policy without medical underwriting, and only then compare plan letters and premiums.
Can you get Medigap after leaving Medicare Advantage?
Possibly. Medigap supplements Original Medicare, so you must be enrolled in Original Medicare to use a Medigap policy; you cannot have Medigap while enrolled in Medicare Advantage. These are two related but separate decisions: leaving Medicare Advantage determines whether and when you return to Original Medicare, while Medigap eligibility determines whether an insurer must sell you a policy and which policies you may choose.

Returning to Original Medicare does not automatically create a right to buy Medigap. Federal guaranteed-issue and trial rights apply only in specified circumstances. If no protected right applies, federal law generally does not require an insurer to sell you a policy. State law may add protections, and insurers may use medical underwriting when permitted. Do not leave an Advantage plan on the assumption that you can buy Medigap afterward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt helps to treat this as a sequence rather than one enrollment decision. First establish how and when you can leave Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare. Then determine whether a federal guaranteed-issue right, a trial right, or a state protection applies to your case. Finally, compare only policies you are allowed to buy, and make sure any needed prescription coverage is arranged separately. A positive answer to “Can I return to Original Medicare?” does not necessarily answer “Must an insurer sell me Medigap?”

Confirm the Medicare Advantage change separately
Before choosing a Medigap policy, confirm which Medicare Advantage disenrollment or election period applies to your circumstances and when your Advantage coverage will end. The rules and dates depend on your situation. Coordinate the move back to Original Medicare with any Medigap application and, if needed, a separate Part D enrollment so you know when each coverage will take effect.
Ask the plan or Medicare what action you need to take, which date will end your Advantage coverage, and what coverage will be in place after that date. Do not assume that applying for Medigap automatically disenrolls you from Medicare Advantage, or that leaving the Advantage plan automatically enrolls you in a drug plan. Confirm each transaction and effective date with the organization responsible for it.
Do you have a guaranteed-issue or trial right?
Start with the reason you are leaving and your history with Medigap. Medicare lists situations that can give someone a federal guaranteed-issue right when switching to Original Medicare, including when a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare, stops serving the person’s area, or the person moves outside its service area. These are examples, not a complete determination of your eligibility; the applicable plan letters and deadlines depend on the specific event.

The right can be limited, including by timing and the policy involved. Check the official Medicare guide for the rule that matches your history rather than assuming every return to Original Medicare qualifies.
When you call Medicare, an insurer, or a counselor, describe the sequence accurately: when you first joined Medicare Advantage, whether it was your first time, whether you had Medigap before joining, whether you dropped that policy, and why you are leaving now. These details matter because the right, the policies that must be offered, and the deadline can differ by fact pattern. If you do not know whether an event counts, ask the counselor to identify the specific federal or state rule that applies rather than relying on a general statement that you can “switch back.”
If you do not qualify for a federal protection, ask your State Insurance Department whether state rules give you additional enrollment rights. If neither federal nor state protections require an insurer to accept your application, an insurer may be able to assess your application under its underwriting rules. Confirm those terms with the insurer before you disenroll.

Do not treat a preliminary quote or an informal assurance as confirmation that you are eligible to buy a policy. Ask what documentation is required, whether your specific event qualifies for guaranteed issue, which plan letters the company must offer in that situation, and whether medical underwriting can apply. If state protections may apply, confirm them with the State Insurance Department as well as the insurer.
What to establish before looking at policies
- Your state of residence and whether the Advantage plan is leaving Medicare, ending service in your area, or no longer covering your area after a move.
- When you first became eligible for Medicare, your Part B status, and whether you previously had Medigap.
- When you first joined Medicare Advantage and whether you dropped Medigap to do so.
- The reason your current Advantage coverage will end and its exact end date.
- Which federal or state protection applies, what plan letters it permits, and whether the insurer may use underwriting.
Write down the answers and dates before requesting quotes. If you moved, note when the move happened and the plan’s service-area details. If the plan is ending or withdrawing, keep the notice that explains that change. If you had a prior Medigap policy, keep the policy information and any cancellation or termination records. Having those documents together can make it easier to explain your situation consistently to Medicare, an insurer, and a SHIP counselor.
How long do you have to apply?
In the qualifying Medicare Advantage situations covered by Medicare’s guidance, you may apply for Medigap as early as 60 days before the Advantage coverage ends or no later than 63 days afterward. That timing is not a blanket deadline for every person leaving Medicare Advantage: other situations can have different rules. Verify the exact window for your triggering event and use the actual coverage end date when calculating it.
Because the application window can straddle the end of your current coverage, do not wait for the last day to investigate your options. Contact Medicare or a SHIP counselor as soon as you receive a termination notice or learn that you are moving outside your plan’s service area. You can use the time before coverage ends to determine which plans may be available and request quotes, while confirming when the application can be submitted and what evidence must accompany it.
Keep documentation that establishes both the reason you qualify and the relevant date. Medicare says you may need proof, such as a termination notice or other evidence of the event. Save letters, notices, emails, and relevant claim denials. If the dates or reason in a notice are unclear, ask the plan for clarification and check with Medicare or your State Insurance Department before the application window closes.

Which Medigap plan can you buy?
The plan letters available to you depend on your qualifying right, state, and eligibility history. Do not assume a plan is available simply because it is sold in your area: a guaranteed-issue right can limit which letters an insurer must offer in your situation, and not every plan is sold in every state.
Medicare’s guide says people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 generally cannot buy Plans C or F. Where a relevant guaranteed-issue right applies, Plan D or Plan G may be available instead. This does not mean D or G is automatically available to everyone leaving Medicare Advantage; confirm your eligibility date and the specific right before relying on a plan list.
That eligibility-date rule is one reason not to choose from a generic chart alone. A chart may describe plan benefits, but it cannot establish whether a particular letter is available to you under your guaranteed-issue right or state rules. Tell the insurer the date you first became eligible for Medicare and the event that triggered your move to Original Medicare, then ask it to identify the letters you can apply for in that situation.

Once you know which plans you can apply for, compare the same plan letter across insurers. Benefits for a given letter are standardized, so the coverage for that letter is the relevant like-for-like comparison. Medicare puts it this way: “For example, compare Plan A from one company with Plan A from another company.” Availability and premiums still vary by company and state.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Plan letter and benefits | Compare the same letter from each company, and confirm that the letter is among the plans you may buy under your specific right. |
| Premium | Get current quotes for your state and circumstances. Premiums differ across companies and states; no single price applies nationwide. |
| Availability | Confirm that the insurer sells the plan in your state and will accept your application under the applicable guaranteed-issue, state, or underwriting rules. |
| Prescription coverage | Check whether you need a separate Medicare Part D plan. Medigap policies sold after 2005 do not cover prescription drugs. |
| Effective dates | Coordinate the end of Medicare Advantage with the start of Original Medicare, Medigap, and any Part D plan you choose. |
Compare only plans you are allowed to buy
It is easy to start with a familiar plan letter or a premium quote, but neither tells you whether you have the right to buy that policy. First establish the plan letters available under your federal or state protection. Then request quotes for those letters and compare coverage on an equal basis. A lower premium for a different letter is not a like-for-like comparison.
Ask each insurer to quote the same letter and confirm whether the quoted price is for your state and situation. If an agent recommends a particular plan, ask how it fits within the plan letters you are eligible to buy and whether the quote depends on underwriting. The comparison should answer two separate questions: what benefits does this letter provide, and can you actually purchase it under the rules that apply to you?

Ask for current, location-specific premiums
There is no universal “best” Medigap letter or insurer in the information available for this decision: your eligible choices, location, and coverage needs matter. Ask insurers for current premiums in your state and confirm the policy’s effective date and application requirements. If an insurer says underwriting applies, ask what that means for your application before you make an irreversible coverage change.
Gather quotes from more than one company when possible, making sure each quote is for the same plan letter and the same proposed start date. Record the company, premium, and any application conditions so that you can compare them side by side. Prices and availability vary; a quote from another state or for another plan letter is not a reliable substitute for a current quote for your own circumstances.
Will Medigap cover your prescriptions?
No. Medigap policies sold after 2005 do not cover prescription drugs. If you need Medicare prescription-drug coverage, evaluate a separate Part D plan and coordinate its start date with your return to Original Medicare. Do not treat a Medigap policy as a replacement for Part D or assume a prescription plan enrollment happens automatically when you leave Medicare Advantage.
Check whether you will need Part D as part of the transition and determine how to enroll in a plan that fits your situation. The effective date matters: arrange prescription coverage alongside the return to Original Medicare and Medigap application, rather than treating it as a later detail. Ask Medicare or a SHIP counselor to help you identify the enrollment steps and timing that apply to you.

- Confirm the return to Original Medicare. Find out which Advantage disenrollment or election period applies, when your current coverage ends, and when Original Medicare coverage will apply.
- Determine whether you have a protected Medigap right. Match the reason for leaving and your prior Medigap and Advantage history to the federal rules. Ask the State Insurance Department about any additional state protections.
- Verify plan letters and the deadline. Confirm which policies the applicable right covers and the precise application window. In the qualifying Medicare Advantage situations described by Medicare, the window can begin 60 days before coverage ends and extend no later than 63 days afterward.
- Keep proof of the event. Save the termination notice, correspondence, and other evidence of the reason and date coverage ends.
- Compare eligible policies. Request current quotes and compare the same standardized plan letter across companies in your state.
- Arrange prescription coverage if needed. Evaluate a separate Part D plan and coordinate its effective date with the other coverage changes.
- Check the start dates before disenrolling or submitting applications. Confirm when each policy or plan will begin, and resolve any gaps or timing questions with Medicare, the insurer, or a counselor.
Keep a simple record of the calls and decisions: who you spoke with, what they said about your right and deadline, which plan letters were identified, and what effective dates were discussed. If the information differs between sources, ask for clarification before relying on it. The aim is to make sure you have a clear path back to Original Medicare, know whether a Medigap insurer must offer you a policy, and do not overlook separate drug coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get Medigap after leaving Medicare Advantage?
Possibly, but leaving Medicare Advantage does not automatically give you the right to buy any Medigap policy. You must return to Original Medicare, and your ability to buy a policy depends on a federal guaranteed-issue or trial right, state protections, and the insurer’s rules where underwriting is allowed.
Do I have a guaranteed-issue right if I leave Medicare Advantage?
Not necessarily. Medicare lists qualifying situations such as a plan leaving Medicare, ending service in your area, or your move outside its service area. Trial rights may also apply in some cases if you dropped Medigap to join Medicare Advantage for the first time and switch back within the trial period. Check your exact history and state rules.
How long do I have to apply for Medigap?
For qualifying Medicare Advantage situations described by Medicare, you may apply as early as 60 days before coverage ends or no later than 63 days afterward. Other situations may have different rules, so verify the deadline for your specific event and use the actual coverage end date.
Which Medigap plans can I buy after leaving Medicare Advantage?
The plan letters depend on your right, state, and Medicare eligibility history. Not every letter is available in every state or under every guaranteed-issue situation. Medicare says people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 generally cannot buy Plans C or F; Plan D or G may be available where a relevant right applies. Confirm your own options before choosing.
Will a Medigap plan cover my prescriptions?
No. Medigap policies sold after 2005 do not cover prescription drugs. If you need drug coverage, evaluate a separate Medicare Part D plan and coordinate its effective date with your return to Original Medicare.
What should I do if I do not have a federal guaranteed-issue right?
Ask your State Insurance Department whether state rules add protections. If no federal or state protection applies, federal law generally does not require an insurer to sell you a policy, and underwriting may be allowed. Confirm the insurer’s terms before leaving Medicare Advantage.

The Bottom Line
Before leaving Medicare Advantage, confirm how you will return to Original Medicare and whether a federal or state rule gives you a right to buy Medigap. Verify the plan letters and application deadline for your specific situation, keep proof of the event, and compare current quotes for the same plan letter. If you need prescription coverage, arrange a separate Part D plan and coordinate its effective date.
