To buy Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG), use a brokerage account that offers ETFs: choose an eligible account, add cash, search for the ticker VUG, verify the fund name, review the order and fees, then submit it. You can place the trade through Vanguard Brokerage Services or another broker; another broker may charge commissions, and its fractional-share and cash-settlement rules may differ.
This is a how-to, not a recommendation to buy VUG. Before placing an order, understand the account you are using, the fund’s current disclosures, and the difference between a market and limit order.

What buying VUG through a brokerage involves
VUG is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) traded through a brokerage account. The basic transaction is to select the account that will own the investment, make cash available in it, identify the security by ticker and name, and submit a buy order. Your broker handles the trade and shows its status in the account.
Vanguard says its ETF shares can be bought and sold through Vanguard Brokerage Services or another broker. If you use a brokerage other than Vanguard, the broker’s fees, order-entry interface, settlement procedures, and fractional ETF features are determined by that firm. A brokerage account gives you a way to place the trade; it does not make VUG’s price or investment outcome certain.

Choose the brokerage account before choosing the order
The account determines who owns the investment and what account rules apply. It is a separate decision from whether VUG suits your investment goals. Vanguard identifies individual and joint investing accounts, custodial UGMA/UTMA accounts, retirement accounts such as Roth and traditional IRAs, SEP-IRAs, and trust or organization accounts among its account options. Availability and eligibility depend on the account provider and the circumstances of the people or organization opening it.
Match the account to the purpose of the money
- Individual or joint investing account: Consider these when the money is being invested outside a retirement or custodial arrangement. A joint account is intended for more than one owner; check the broker’s terms for how ownership and account authority work.
- Roth or traditional IRA: These are retirement-account choices, not different versions of the ETF. Their eligibility and tax treatment are governed by separate rules. Vanguard says IRA investing requires the investor or spouse to have employment income. Check current IRS rules and the broker’s eligibility requirements rather than assuming that opening an IRA makes a contribution permissible.
- SEP-IRA: This is another retirement-account type listed by Vanguard. Confirm that it fits the account holder’s situation and the provider’s requirements before funding it.
- Custodial UGMA/UTMA account: This is an account for a minor held under applicable custodial arrangements. Review the broker’s state-specific account terms and who may manage the assets.
- Trust or organization account: These accounts may require documentation establishing the entity, trust, or authority of the person placing trades. Check the broker’s opening requirements before planning a purchase.
Do not choose an account solely because it is the one already displayed in a trade screen. Confirm the account name and registration before submitting an order. If you are unsure about tax treatment or eligibility, consult an appropriately qualified tax professional; the brokerage’s account menu is not individualized tax advice.
Open or use a brokerage account that supports ETFs
If you already have an account, check that it is enabled for ETF trading and that you are placing the order in the intended account. If you need a new one, choose a broker that offers ETF transactions and review its account agreement and fee disclosures. Vanguard permits Vanguard ETF trades through Vanguard Brokerage Services or another broker; it does not require you to use a Vanguard account to buy VUG.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen comparing account providers, verify the practical details rather than relying on a general claim that trading is “free.” Check whether VUG is available, what online and broker-assisted trades cost, whether account or transaction fees apply, whether fractional ETF orders are supported, and what minimums or eligibility rules apply. Also check the available order types and how the account can be funded. These terms can change, so consult the provider’s current disclosures before opening or using an account.
How to compare brokerage options
Compare providers on the features that affect your specific purchase. Confirm that each offers VUG, then compare online and assisted-trade commissions, other account or transaction charges, account minimums and eligibility rules, and support for fractional ETF orders. Review which order types the trade screen offers and how straightforward it is to fund the account or transfer it later if you choose to move. A low or zero online commission is only one item in that comparison; the fee schedule may list other charges, and ETF ownership still includes fund expenses and market risk. There is no single brokerage choice implied by the ability to trade VUG.
Fund the account and understand where the cash sits
A purchase requires available cash in the brokerage account. Vanguard describes a settlement fund as the place that holds money used to buy securities and proceeds from sales. For a newly opened Vanguard brokerage account, Vanguard says money must be in the settlement fund before buying an ETF. The exact name and operation of a cash or settlement balance may differ at another broker, so check its instructions and confirm that the cash is available to trade.

Vanguard says fractional investing allows its own ETF trades for any dollar amount, regardless of the ETF’s share price. This statement describes Vanguard’s service; it does not establish that every brokerage supports fractional VUG purchases. If you intend to invest a set dollar amount rather than buy whole shares, confirm that your broker accepts fractional ETF orders and see how it displays the estimated quantity and cash remaining. If fractional trading is unavailable, check the broker’s order screen for the share quantity and estimated cost before submitting.

A transfer or cash balance may not yet be treated as settled or available under that provider’s procedures. Follow the broker’s funding instructions and rely on the trade preview and account status rather than assuming that every displayed dollar can be used immediately. Vanguard specifically describes the settlement fund requirement for its newly opened brokerage accounts; other providers set out their own cash and settlement procedures.
Find VUG and verify the security
- Open the brokerage’s trade or investment screen and choose the account that will own the purchase.
- Select the option to buy or trade an ETF or stock, as appropriate for that broker.
- Search for VUG.
- Before proceeding, verify that the result identifies Vanguard Growth ETF. Do not rely on a similar-looking name, ticker, or search result alone.
Vanguard’s ETF listing classifies VUG as stock—large-cap growth and labels it “Morningstar Growth ETF.” The ticker and full fund name are the key identifiers to confirm in the trade screen. Vanguard’s listing returned with fund data dated October 2, 2026, showed a 0.03% expense ratio. This is a dated fund figure, not a guaranteed permanent rate; check the current fund profile and prospectus for the expense ratio and other fund details before investing.
The expense ratio is a fund expense, not a brokerage commission shown as a separate per-order charge in the trade preview. Use the fund’s current profile or prospectus to check expenses and fund information, and use the broker’s fee schedule to check brokerage charges. Keeping those two cost sources separate makes it easier to understand what a quoted commission does—and does not—tell you about the total costs of owning an ETF.
Review the order before submitting it
Order types affect how a trade is submitted; none removes the risk that the investment’s value can decline. The broker’s screen may show additional fields such as quantity, dollar amount, time in force, and estimated order value. Read the values shown for your specific account and order. The exact labels and available options vary by broker.

Limit order
A limit order sets the maximum price you are willing to pay for a buy order. If the market price remains above your limit, the order may not execute. A limit is a price boundary, not a promise that a purchase will occur: the market must reach a level at which the order can be filled, and execution is not guaranteed.
Stop and stop-limit orders
Vanguard also describes stop and stop-limit orders, which use trigger prices and have distinct execution trade-offs. These are not interchangeable with a simple market or limit order. If you are considering one, read your broker’s explanation of the trigger and what happens after activation; do not assume the trigger guarantees a particular execution price.
Check the preview and order status
Before submitting, review the account, security name and ticker, buy direction, share quantity or dollar amount, order type, limit or trigger price if applicable, and any estimated cost or fee displayed. Submit only if those details match what you intend. After submitting, check the order-status screen to see whether the broker shows it as open, partially filled, filled, rejected, or canceled. If it has not filled, consult the order details before placing another order; a second submission could create an additional purchase if the first order later executes.
The distinction between execution and price control is central when choosing between a market and limit order. A market order asks for execution at the current market price but does not cap the exact price. A limit order gives you a maximum purchase price but can remain unfilled. Neither order type guarantees that VUG will perform as you hope, and the order screen should be reviewed against your own instructions rather than treated as a recommendation about which order to use.
Check commissions and other costs
Brokerage commission is only one possible cost. Review the current fee schedule for the account and type of transaction you plan to make, and check for other applicable charges. For Vanguard Brokerage Services, the fee schedule effective July 10, 2026, lists online ETF and stock transactions at $0 commission. Under that same schedule, broker-assisted transactions for accounts with less than $1 million in qualifying assets are listed at $25 per trade. Vanguard cautions that other fees or commissions may apply, and that ETF sales are subject to a securities transaction fee. These figures describe that schedule and should not be treated as the full cost of every account or transaction.
Another broker sets its own rates and terms. Look up the current schedule for online and assisted trades, account services, and any transaction charges before placing an order. A $0 online commission does not mean that the investment has no costs: the fund has operating expenses, and an ETF’s market price can differ from its net asset value. Review the current prospectus for the fund’s stated expenses and disclosures.

Also distinguish the stated Vanguard commission from charges that may apply under a particular account or transaction. The $0 figure is for online ETF and stock transactions in the cited schedule; it is not a blanket statement that every method of trading or every service is free. The listed $25 assisted-trade charge applies to accounts under $1 million in qualifying assets under that schedule. If you use broker assistance, sell ETF shares, or hold the investment at a different broker, check the relevant current terms instead of assuming those figures apply unchanged.

Understand what can happen after you buy
An ETF share trades in the secondary market at a market price. Vanguard warns that ETF transactions may occur at prices above or below net asset value (NAV), the per-share value of the fund’s underlying assets. As a result, the price at which you buy or sell is not necessarily identical to the fund’s NAV.
Vanguard also warns that ETFs are subject to market volatility and that all investing involves risk, including the possible loss of the money invested. VUG’s category and ticker do not guarantee returns or protect the purchase from a decline. Review the current prospectus and fund profile for the objectives, holdings, expenses, and risks that apply at the time you invest.
Vanguard says ETF shares generally trade in the secondary market and ordinary investors do not directly redeem them with the fund. Its description of direct redemption applies only to very large aggregations worth millions of dollars. For a typical brokerage investor, the relevant transaction is buying or selling ETF shares through a broker.
That distinction is one reason the broker’s displayed market price matters: ordinary brokerage investors buy and sell ETF shares in the secondary market, while the fund’s NAV reflects the value of its underlying assets per share. The two values may differ. Neither the ticker nor the category label removes market volatility or the possibility that your investment may lose value, including the amount invested.
Common problems and what to check
- The order cannot be submitted: Confirm that you selected the intended account, the account is enabled for the transaction, the security is available to trade, and the account has cash available under the broker’s rules. Contact the broker if its status message does not explain the issue.
- The cash balance appears sufficient but the purchase is blocked: Check whether the displayed cash is available for trading or is still subject to the broker’s settlement or transfer process. Vanguard requires money in the settlement fund for ETF purchases in a newly opened Vanguard brokerage account; other providers explain their own cash procedures.
- You cannot enter a dollar amount: The broker may not support fractional ETF orders for VUG. Check its fractional-trading policy and the quantity field; do not assume Vanguard’s fractional-investing feature applies at another firm.
- A limit order remains open: The market may not have reached a price at which the order can execute. Review the order’s limit, status, and time-in-force terms in the broker interface. Do not submit a duplicate without checking whether the original order remains active.
- The previewed amount or fee differs from what you expected: Recheck the account, order type, quantity or dollar amount, and the broker’s current fee schedule. Cancel or revise the order before submission if the details are wrong.
- The security result looks unfamiliar: Stop and verify both the VUG ticker and Vanguard Growth ETF name. Do not submit an order based only on a partial name or an unverified search result.
Final pre-trade checklist
- The account type and account owner are correct for the money being invested.
- The account is eligible and has cash available to trade.
- The selected security is identified as VUG, Vanguard Growth ETF.
- You reviewed the current prospectus or fund profile, including expenses, holdings, and risks.
- You understand whether the order is market, limit, stop, or stop-limit and what that means for execution.
- You checked the brokerage’s current commissions and other applicable fees.
- The order preview matches your intended account, amount or quantity, and order terms.
Frequently Asked Questions

How do I buy VUG?
Use an ETF-enabled brokerage account, choose the account that will own the investment, make cash available to trade, search for VUG, and verify that the result is Vanguard Growth ETF. Then review the order type, amount or share quantity, estimated costs, and fees before submitting.
Can I buy VUG for any dollar amount?
Vanguard says its fractional investing feature allows Vanguard ETF trades for any dollar amount, regardless of share price. That does not mean every brokerage supports fractional purchases of VUG. Check the broker’s policy and order screen; if fractional orders are not supported, confirm the whole-share quantity and estimated cost.
Does Vanguard charge a commission to buy VUG online?
Vanguard’s fee schedule effective July 10, 2026, lists online ETF and stock transactions at $0 commission. The same schedule lists a $25 broker-assisted trade for accounts under $1 million in qualifying assets, notes that other fees or commissions may apply, and says ETF sales are subject to a securities transaction fee. Check the current schedule and your account’s terms.

That depends on the order terms you want; neither is right for every investor. A market order prioritizes execution but does not control the exact purchase price. A limit order sets the maximum price you are willing to pay, but may not execute if the market remains above that limit. Read the broker’s order details before choosing.
Can I lose money by investing in VUG?
Yes. Vanguard says ETFs are subject to market volatility and that all investing is subject to risk, including possible loss of the money invested. ETF market prices can also be above or below NAV. Review VUG’s current prospectus for its objectives, holdings, expenses, and risks.
The Bottom Line
To buy VUG, use an ETF-enabled brokerage account, fund available cash, search for and verify Vanguard Growth ETF by ticker and name, then review the order type, costs, and current fund disclosures before submitting. Broker fees, fractional-order support, and cash procedures vary, and investing involves risk, including possible loss of principal.
